Thanks for the clarification about it being a Lexus.

I was thinking those were pretty cheap for Mercedes Benz.

(or pretty pricey for a Hyundai)

Granite is almost expected today - even in starter homes.

Around here some basic granites are going for about $35 a sq. ft installed. Also some installers are doing the veneers over a wood base that saves $$ as well.

When we redid our kitchen 3 years ago, solid surface composites were just as pricey as the granites. We went with granite and stainless (and yes we mixed brands of appliances...)

We had a good rule made about a year ago I believe. If you are calling a car by it's model name, then please also add the Type of car it is....it's too difficult these days to know what is what.

Glad that you had a nice trip. I haven't had my top down this summer. It has been so hot. These 100 degree days are a killer, especially with the humidity. Believe it or not, I'm considering giving up the convertible. My wife never likes to have the top down, plus our summers are so hot. I'm thinking about a Ford F150 Crew Cab XLT. I've never had a truck but always wanted one. Surprisingly, I mentioned it to my wife who made no negative remarks. We'll see. I saw a few 2010 models with 4k-7k on them for like $24K-$28K. Two of them were dealer demos. I might be able to strike a good deal on one.

This is your big chanceto get an GM (Grand Marquis) or a TC (Lincoln Town Car). It would be perfect for driving around and for picking up antiques.

Wives don't like the top down too much......my wife and comments from others lead me to this conclusion. I think it is the wind messing up hair and every one is influenced by the news about the damage sun does. I find it is too hot when the sun is bright and if the temperature is about 72 or more. But, in the evening, or on a cloudy day, at speeds below about 50 mph, there are few things better than driving with the top down.

No, but feel free to explain the Equus.

I'm interested in whether it's a SUV or a car, truck, etc.

Then the HP of the engine followed by FWD, AWD, RWD.

Next, the interior. Two tone Leather, Pwr seats, Cruise, Tilt, Tele.

Then the stereo. Big Power, Big speakers and lots of them.

Not sure how you guys rate a vehicle, but that's how I do it.

As I posted a few weeks back, we bought a 2011 FX4 Crew Cab for my wife. We both prefer the fact that the FX models are completely devoid of any chrome on the exterior, and after much research we decided on the 5.0 rather than the Econoboost.
One option you might look for considering your occasional leg issues is the fold-out step and grab handle.
It makes it so much easier to get into the bed and is an absolute lifesaver (or legsaver) if you have to get up and down many times to load or unload something.

I think you'll be impressed when you take a test drive.
If you were driven in it blindfolded you'd never guess it was a truck.

OK it's a car, 385 HP and 333 lbs of torque, RWD, as for the interior it has all those things plus much more including reclining seats in the back.

one thing to keep in mind with the size of Pus these days, you quite possibly can kiss goodbye parking in the garage.

that to me is enough to nix the idea!

Someone really needs to make a good, flexible, economical modest size PU again. maybe a flex vehicle, like the Honda ridgeline but smaller and less ugly!

Hey, what can I say, I always loved El Caminos, and thought the Sube Baja was a good (if poorly executed) idea.

I'm impressed. Hyundai, you say? Never seen one. None on ebay.

I'll assume with all that, it probably has a stereo I can hear.

It looks larger than my Avalon. And that barely fit in the garage.

I guess you need the crew cab to haul all your friends around, right?

Just don't forget all your Edmunds friends. To haul all them around you'll need something like this:

It is bigger than an Avalon, its ment to go up against the bigger luxury models out there.

From what I hear next year its supposed to get the Genesis 5.0 engine bringing it up to around 425 HP.

Only a select group of Hyundai dealers sell them and if you want a test drive they will bring it out to you. Supposively if you need service they will come to you with the loaner and drive the Equus back then bring it back to you when its done.

I have seen one or two out on the road and sat in one at the auto show. I was really impressed.

Its a really nice machine. A Lexus LS460 at 2/3 the price. My salesman that sold me the Genesis wanted me to test drive one. Too much coin for me. The interior is a really nice place to be and the ride is softer than the Genesis.

Mako, the Equus comes with a Lexicon audio system. My Genesis has the Lexicon and it pretty much rocks. The system in the Equus (and Tech package Gennys) is even better.

But, in the evening, or on a cloudy day, at speeds below about 50 mph, there are few things better than driving with the top down.

Kinda interesting that this subject came up.

Just last week we were coming back from visiting some friends around 11 PM and the convertibles were out in full force. It seemed like every other car was a convertible. Last week the temperature here in the Burgh was well into the 90’s but at night when the sun went down it was pretty pleasant. This explained why we saw so many convertibles.

This also prompted a discussion that went like this:

Mrs. j: I was thinking something but I better not say it. You’re not the right person to say this to.

Me: What, are you going to keep me in suspense all night?

Mrs. j: Ok, I’ll say it but you’re not getting one.

    Me: Getting what?

Mrs. j: A convertible. Convertibles are made for nights like this. Driving around with the sun down at slow speeds, that must be nice but you’re not getting one.

Me: Who says? You always say I’m spoiled and I get everything I want. I wasn’t even thinking about getting a convertible but since you brought it up…………

Mrs. j: Yeah, you're spoiled alright but I haven't spoiled you that much. :(

We come to the next intersection and there is a guy my age that is bald and his passenger is a not so attractive female (probably his wife) and the conversation continues.

Me: There, see that. That guy doesn’t even have hair and he looks pretty good in that car. I’d look smashing in that thing. It just so happened to be a BMW but you get my point.

Mrs. j: Well, I’ll give you that but I think I look a lot better than her. You’re still not getting one.

We come to another intersection a few lights down the road and there is a couple in their 20s and the guy has one of those shaven head doos and the woman is, is, is, well, pretty good looking.

Me: When I was his age I looked a lot better than that (for those who don’t know it, I still have ALL my hair but it isn’t all the same color as in my younger days).

Mrs. j: When I was her age I’d like to think I looked something like that. I wish I looked like that now.

Me: You do dear. Now can I get a convertible? :)

I’d like to say “TO BE CONTINUED” but I wouldn’t like how a convertible would mess up my hair.

I have no idea, that's why I'm asking. I do like the automatic part. No clutch pedals for me, please.

When buying an unknown brand I start with used to see if I like it. The dealer is in Raleigh, NC (about 150 miles away). Maybe I should get Richard to whip out his negotiating skills and get me a deal.

The dealer just emailed me with a price of $18,200. Is that too much for this car?

He also has this car for sale. 2004 Vette in Yellow

I'm open to suggestions. Just trying to spend a little money before the banks collapse.

well, the bimmer says its an automated manual, and you can see in the pics it has a stick ... so, yeah, pretty sure that's the SMG.

I was trying to find a writeup on why its disliked ... but now that I'm searching, I'm only finding positives. Huh. Maybe I had it wrong. Or maybe someone more knowledgable will chime in.

on that vette ... not sure how it could be producing 650hp without forced induction. Sounds like BS to me. And if it IS doing that, I'd be worried about reliability.

I checked it out with my limited skills but I think it said it was pulled off the market. But some of the other bimmers they asked you to look at seemed pretty nice.

Now can I get a convertible?

You are funny. I once read 90% of the people who get a convertible only get one once. I can see why, it is a great experience but for many people it is a "done it, and once was enough" kind of thing.

But, under ideal circumstances, on a perfect day, it is truly a wonderful feeling. I doubt if I will get a 2nd convertible, but I am going to hold onto this one for awhile, until I get tired of it.

My wife likes riding in this car, but there are few days she likes to actually have the top down...mainly because of the wind and sun. The dog isn't a big fan either, she hides on the floor out of the direct sunlight.

I am lucky if I get to use it 20 days in the year. My guy friends love going in the convertible. Go figure!

I only wanted this one because it's an M3 with A/T (more or less).

He said he's going to relist it if I don't come to his $18,200, which I won't.

I'll wait until 1 minute to end and try again, but 15k is my limit on this one

We sell a few of them, think we have 3 of them out so far this month.

It is basically an LS460 for 2/3 the price. The "base" ones that we get have more equipment than the 08 LS460 that I am currently driving, and, IMO, have a slightly nicer ride.

It does come with an iPad manual, which I think is really cool myself. Customers love it.

So far everyone who has bought one from us absolutely loves the car.

On the Yellow Vette, no way does it make 650 hp even with fuel air spark tech (FAST). It's all sales talk. However, yellow with A/T is rare. If it doesn't knock, ping or blow smoke it's still a good car for the money. Assuming it stays under 20k.

Too bad he's so far away (150 miles) or I'd be a buyer today. BMW or Vette, makes no difference to me. He just happens to have what I'm attracted to.

I'm not sure I could buy a car where I'd have to read a manual in order to learn how to read the owner's manual.

it's ironic that I'm saying this as I am posting this from the wife's iPad.

Mako, the Equus comes with a Lexicon audio system. My Genesis has the Lexicon and it pretty much rocks. The system in the Equus (and Tech package Gennys) is even better.

    Another coincidence.

I have an ’09 Genny with tech package and when the radio works it’s pretty good although I have no idea why a car needs 17 speakers.

I mentioned a while back that my Genny had the audio go out one morning this past winter but after it sat in the parking lot all day, when I started it up everything was fine. This also happened a couple months after I got the car but it reset. I figured it would happen again and I was right. This time when it happened I called the dealer when I got to my desk and they said bring it in at the end of the day and they’d look at it. So even though it was working again at the end of the day I took it in but of course they couldn’t find anything.

Fast forward to about a month ago and it happened again but this time it was at the end of the day when I was leaving work. I drove it right to the dealer while it was dead. The service advisor looks at it. I knew he couldn’t do anything that I didn’t do but I left him play with it. He goes to get the tech that had Genny training and this guy plays with it too then said, “maybe there is a code stored in the computer so make an appointment and I’ll look at it when I can spend more time on it. I gotta get a car out of here before we close”. I could understand that but I mentioned that I heard there was a problem with the amplifiers and wasn’t this a possibility (I think you mentioned this). The tech said, “yeah, there was, with the early amplifiers, but I don’t think it acted like this”. I mentioned that this was an ’09 that I got in March of ’09 so didn’t my car fall into this early category? He couldn’t remember exactly what the tech bulletin said because he read it quickly and HE never saw one himself with a problem, ever.

I shut off the car and go in to make an appointment. They made it for 2 days away when they’d have a loaner available. You guessed it, when I restarted it everything was fine. I go back in and let them know what happened. They scratched their heads again and said “just keep the appointment”.

I took it in and since I didn’t hear from them I called about an hour before I was going to leave work and the advisor informed me that they didn’t find anything. I said, “well you saw it was dead, am I supposed to wait until it never resets? Is that when you’ll replace the amplifier”? SILENCE. I go to get the car and by the time I get there the advisor tells me they were trying to get in contact with the field engineers all day and were waiting for a call. They finally called back after I talked to him and they said, “replace the amplifier”. They offered another loaner but I said if it wouldn’t take long to replace the amp I’d rather just wait and avoid the loaner hassle. They said, “sure, we’ll call you when it comes in and we’ll work on it first thing in the morning when you bring it in”. They ordered an amplifier, I took it in early before work, and they worked on it immediately. Just like they said they would.

So far so good but I lost my connection to XM and they said I’d have to call about that myself because XM wouldn’t send the signal again unless the owner called. I did, no problem. I also lost all by Bluetooth numbers and nav stuff too. So, I had to go through all that again too.

This high tech stuff is a PITA but I do like XM, Bluetooth and the nav. I never thought I’d get hooked on that stuff but I did.

They did the right thing by replacing the amp for you. There were TSBs and plenty of documentation of the amps having intermittent problems.

My Genny has been trouble free for about the last 10 months or so, ever since it stranded me (twice).

"Besides, what happens when the fad changes to some other material?"

Does that mean I'm going to have a hard time selling a house with avocado green shag carpeting, patterned linoleum flooring almond colored appliances and dark brown faux wood paneling--each of which was in at least one house I rented. Watching sit coms from the 70s, 80s and 90s really gives one a feel for what was once popular, but wouldn't sit well with anyone these days. I particularly liked the interior "decorating" style of Bob and Emily on the old Bob Newhart show. I guess none of the oldsters here would be caught dead in Bob's wardrobe either, but I definitely remember my father wearing similar attire in the mid-70s.

My wife loves those HGTV shows. Every couple buying a new house has to have granite counters and stainless steel appliances. As an artist I can tell you that means that those trends have already "jumped the shark" and are already hopelessly outdated. I love that none of the prospective buyers cares about reliability, ease of maintenance or actual features. There's a weird, almost visceral longing produced by the appearance of granite and/or stainless in a kitchen--same goes for fancy tile and glass doors in bathrooms. The poor slob whose house has laminate and white appliances is clearly one of those social outcasts from high school who was forced to eat with the other socially and stylistically disadvantaged.

Good grief! There is no comparison. Get the yellow Vette. I'll even meet you there and help you negotiate. I must say that the BMW is the most perfect used car that I have ever seen to be 8 years old. It is really amazing. Still, a yellow Vette---how totally yummy! Offer him $14,500 and see what happens. You might end up with it for $16K. The $18,200 seems a little high to me.

I have had sa similar problem with the BMW. Radio, doesn't come on....leave the car for a few hours, it works again. It wasn't working so I said can I bring it in right now while it isn't working so you can see I'm not completely crazy. They said sure. I rush over and they say, can't do anything, reprogramming will take a whole day, we'll make an appointment. They did, it took longer to fix, they gave me a loaner for a day. They are supposed to give you a BMW but all their cars were out apparently, so I got a Nissan Versa.
Talk about a step down in life. Any way, the radio seems to work but the warranty expires in October so I am sure it isw programmed to go again sometime after that.

It's nice to see cars are more dependable in many areas, and have lots of nice features, but there is something to the saying, the more complicated and the more gimmicks the car has, the more can go wrong.

Yes, I noticed the fold-out step and grab handle on the F150's. It is definitely something that I would want and need. It was very nice of you to think of that. Those trucks are so good looking. I know that you are really enjoying yours. Did you buy because you do a lot of hauling, or did you just want a truck?

Tom! I can't believe it. I didn't know that they made such a truck. I'm off to the web sites to look around. Thanks!!!

I have had two convertibles and will be looking for another. I only wish I'd started earlier. One of my brothers in on his third and another is probably on his sixth or so.

I guess some people just get one and find it isn't for them, and some people become addicted!

Overall, I like it, but it does have it's problems...such as more noise, not as strong, rattles, hard to get in and out of backseat, replacing soft tops, etc.

Maybe I will get another one....not sure yet.

My wife loves those HGTV shows.

Mine too. I don’t think the TV in the office that she watches (from a recliner that I thought I’d get some use out of  ) can receive a channel other than HGTV. The scary part is when she comes down to the family room and says, “guess what I just saw”?

jwilliams2…Our first house was new and we had to buy ALL of the appliances. The kitchen cabinets were a walnut color and I suggested Harvest Gold since I didn’t think any of the other colors would look as well with those cabinets. She agreed and when we moved to our second house, 20 years later ('89), we took the fridge because that color had disappeared by then and we didn’t feel like buying everything new at that time. The dishwasher in that house was Harvest Gold and the stove was stainless.

I'll bet you a year's dues that a dining room suite comes before another car purchase.

Don’t be so sure about that. Like I said before, when I got the Genny, “by the time I was through with her I had her believing that she was the one that wanted the V8 in Cabernet Red Pearl and I was just an innocent bystander”.

I'm spoiled, I get everything I want. Her words and I hear them all the time. :)

Yep. All legitimate issues. noise and shrunken trunks are my biggest issues. I know some hard top convertibles are quieter but I lie canvas tops.

Richard - what on earth year and miles is that? Too much!
