On the spellcheck - you also always have the thing where you spelled a word correctly but it wasn't the word you meant. I've had that happen. In driver's post he used descent, a perfectly good word, but he meant decent. It happens - to me as well as others.

What a great ocean day! Perfect temp, nice waves without being too much. I was in for a couple hours straight. Salt water is good for all that ails you.

A house where my aunt and uncle used to rent back when I was a little kid is for sale. Oceanfront. $2.2 million bucks! Oh, Richard......

Now I am hooked up to my twelve hour medication. Oh, well.

Did my first Outer Banks trip last year. Absolutely loved it.

I am really thinking about moving to a place where the ocean is warmer for a longer part of the year. I live here because it's close to the ocean but I can only get into it maybe two months out of twelve. Given my medical needs the Outer Banks is probably too remote. Maybe the northern Florida Atlantic coast. Heck, the Mayo Clinic has a hospital in Jacksonville.....

I'll be off for two weeks after Friday. The first week will just be around here but if the doctor gives me the time the following week we'll try to go someplace. There are still places down in the Carolinas with nice rentals available that week.

    "finding descent hotels".
Presumably those are the ones you find as you go down the hill?

Exactly, we do a lot of skiing in Canada so we do look for hotels we can stay in when we go down hills.

One "L" for my country and two "L's" for yours.

Please check that...I think it can be spelled both ways in both countries.
    I tried dictionary.com and dictionary.ca
I thought the "l" should be single, since it comes after a vowel, but what do I know?

Good point. I like the saying "Nothing is as good as it seems, and nothing is as bad as it seems". A lot of these guys make money on the fears people have, they are like snake oil salesmen for financials. But, I think there are serious financial problems that need a solution....unless your economy turns around really fast.

he said her undisputed favorite is the 335xi hardtop convertible
I have a hardtop 328 and I would agree the 335 is a completely different car. The 328 is really nice, at least while under warranty, but the 335 is close to perfect.

I am surprised she would like the X6 that much. It seems kind of like a car on steroids. I guess it could be considered a small SUV. Now a 535, that I could understand or a 650 convertible................

    Gogi -

I have the 3 burner version, but pretty much the same as well. I ordered replacement flavorizer bars for Weber.com - don't remember if the price was high or low, but they shipped very fast, I came home from work and there they were.

Side note about ordering from the web - went to get replacement wipers from the local auto parts store for my C350 - guy looked them up and said yup - exact fit. I get home and of course they don't fit.

I poke around on Amazon.com - find the exact OEM blades and add to a bigger order I had going (got free shipping) and a few days later there they are, and they pop right in. Half the price of the dealer and at my front door.

Kind of weird to buy auto parts on Amazon, but will order replacements that way next time as well...

Fezo, I know you said "salt water", but don't underestimate spring water.

Summersville Lake in West Virginia is spring fed, warm and clear enough to see 15 feet down. summersville lake

We rented a pontoon boat and campground there the day after labor day.
Mostly to avoid kids. It was gorgeous. It's a huge lake surrounded by rocks. Mid Sept they drain 75 feet to make room for spring thaw. Also has river rapids and buses that take people tubing back down to the parking area.

I have two cats, and one dog that is smaller than the cats. It's hard to beat a dog as a companion, but cats are more interesting creatures. As far as the grill talk goes, I have a Brinkman stainless gas grill. I bought a Traeger smoker/ grill last summer. Ever since I've owned the Traeger, the gas grill gets used a lot less frequent. Living in Texas, I can grill/cook outdoors all year round.

I've had my Himalayan for going on 14 years, and she is my constant companion. She likes to sleep on my computer desk next to me while I surf. In the years past I have had many wonderful dogs. But since I live alone and worked long hours, she is perfect for me.

And I've had a Weber gas grill for almost 20 years. My son once used it while I was out of town, and it ran out of propane. So he just dumped charcoal in it, and finished his cookout. The charcoal made a mess and burned through the bottom, which is a little warped now. I had to replace the flavor bars, drip pan and some other parts, but it still works fine. I highly recommend Weber.

    Actually I'm wishing I hadn't bought it.

The thing is, you aren't looking at all that much money to put things right; and don't blame BMW for the problems with the radio- that's why I avoid Bimmers with aftermarket radios/CD players, as maybe one in ten is properly installed. In any case, I seriously doubt that you will find many 10-15 year old cars that don't have one or more issues that need attention. My 1999 Wrangler has needed a new radiator, exhaust manifold, shocks, steering stabilizer, and front anti-roll bar end links($1450). Contrast that with my 1995 3 Series track rat which has needed a brake light switch, a thermostat, a hose fitting, and three serpentine belt pulleys(@$650).

Speaking about Amazon, we finally broke down and got a Kindle...there were so many positive comments about them from youz guys!

It has Wi-Fi so you can order books from about 160 countries all over the world. My wife reads 3 or 4 books a week and we will be away for most of September, and we will be on a cruise ship for 12 days so she will probably go through 10 books....and they are pretty heavy to take with.

It will be ideal for the trip, holds about 3000 books but probably 10 will be fine. The verdict, she prefers reading from a real book, but she is OK to use the Kindle for the trip.

I read a book a week, so I will be OK taking 2 or 3 books with us. If we get to like them we will get another Kindle, or possiby an iPad so it can be used as a book or as a portable computer.

Technology is changing so quickly, I am waiting for the implanted book, they just inject it into your artery.

Yes, that does happen at times. Those are called homophones (sound alike) such as "die" and "dye". Spellcheck won't help you with those.

"Maybe the northern Florida Atlantic coast."

We went to the Orange Bowl a couple of years ago in Jacksonville. I had never given the city much thought until then. It is a beautiful city with lots to do and see. We were very impressed. The people were friendly; the restaurants were fantastic; and the city has to be one of the cleanest in the country. I could enjoy living there myself.

Would 'aluminium', 'centre', 'programme', and 'catalogue', (to name but a few) all be the correct spelling in Canada?

    "How about St. Augustine..."

I don't know much about it. I've only been once or twice many years ago. My sister has a third home in Port St. Lucie, and my nephew has a second home in West Palm. They are both nice places. We go down there once or twice a year---usually the day after Christmas.

The word "theater" is another example. The British tend to use the word "theatre". I was taught to use "theatre", but that spelling has largely disappeared. Commercial advertising and the media caused the change in spelling here in this country.

Wasn't there also a period of time when children here were first taught to spell as the word sounded phonetically, before later learning the correct spelling?
I can't imagine that helped much either.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
Your nephew has multiple homes? What are you doing leaving all that money to someone already well off? I ahve a much more needy candidate.....

If you went to the Orange Bowl in Jacksonville you were robbed. It's played in Fort Lauderdale. Used to be in Miami. However, if you went to the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville that would work.

I intend to check out St. Augustine - close enough to Jacksonville. I almost married a lady in the Jacksonville area - up on Amelia Island in Fernandina Beach.

Cats - we've had a bunch of them. The incumbent doesn't like any animals so it's just her, the dog, two mice and a hamster. When this cat dies she'll probably be replaced with 2 or 3.

More spellcheck fun - typos taht are real words. I find all too often taht I typed tow when I meant two.

    Snake--

I know that I was turned away from ever owing a Yugo not because of their poor build quality but because it's perhaps the only car to have been blown off the Mackinac Bridge--which I have been known to cross from time to time. Depending on where it blew off it could have been a 155 foot drop to the water.

Found this substantiation on the internet so it must be gospel:

"Two vehicles have gone off the bridge: a 1987 Yugo was blown off the bridge during a particularly bad windstorm in 1989 (high speed may have also been to blame), and a sport utility vehicle drove off the bridge in March 1997 (which may have been a suicide)."

I'd say that owning a Yugo goes beyond acknowledging the "temperamental" to just plain "mental", but I take your point.

We've had three cats. Two lived to be almost 20. My favorite cat, van Gogh (or as my students spell it, "vango"), is responsible for my tag name on this forum. I'd get another cat in a heartbeat, but my father is very allergic to cats and seems to be enjoying his annual visits without antihistimines.

I really like both cats and dogs even though we have been a dog(s) only family now for the least 6 years.

We have never been "cat people" but we now have two. They belong to our son but when our grandchild arrived we figured it was best if they left the condo.

After having owned two dogs, cats do have some things in their favor.

These are indoor cats and they never EVER make a mess. We have a ltttter box both upstairs and downstairs that are cleaned often.

The cats don't stink, they don't ask much and they are quiet companions.

I like dogs too but they are a lot of constant work. They can stink, they bark and they need to be cleaned up after.

The cats are both females and they get into it once in awhile. A "cat fight" I guess you could call it but nothing serious.
  • mac24mac24 Member Posts: 3,910
Never really thought about it before, but ever since I left home at the age of seventeen there's always been a cat and a dog in my life.

They've all been mutts, both cats and dogs, and never had one get sick although a couple were lost to accidents.

At times they can be a hinderance and a tie, at others just their presence completely justifies their place in my life.
    Absolutely no regrets.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
One good thing about cats is the fact that you can leave home for a weekend and there is no trouble. Make sure food and water bowls have plenty and that's it!

Truth be known, they probably won't even miss you.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
Yeah, we've had at least a cat or a dog our entire married life and the last time I didn't have an animal in the house was when I was in grad school. That was 35 years ago.

Cats are pretty low maintenance which really is a big point in their favor.

...whoooop whoooop whoooop eeeeh eeeeh eeeh...

Two weeks ago we finally went into the local Ford dealer to buy a Explorer XLT. We are X Plan buyers but the dealer didn't have what we wanted and what they did wasn't even close.

We had found one on line as we wanted at a dealer in NH - about 40 miles north but X Plan doesn't allow for trades. So we negotiated like a regular deal and the local dealer wanted about $1200 over invoice. Told him I was willing to drive to NH to save $900-1000.

Called the dealer in NH the same day and we discoverd that car had already been sold. But they were willing to do a dealer trade on X Plan. Over the course of the next week neither of the vehicles they could get were available.

So we started searching around and found another one but in a different color. It was about 60 miles south of us this time near Providence, RI. Last Saturday I called the dealer to make sure they had it and that they would do X Plan. Drove down, tested it out and bought it.

Picked it up yesterday: Suede White with stone leather XLT AWD with Nav. The My Ford Touch is going to take some getting used to and it's big - really big.

No stress in the finance office. We were only shown a menu of pre-paid maintenance, tire insurance, extended warranties, Lo Jack, et al but declined and they said no problem.

I guess it's kind of boring but it is a story.

Not ours. The cat's always the first to come and say hi when I get up, even if she was eating she'd leave the bowl and come and rub round my legs and meow.

The dog is cute but is totally self centered. All she's interested in is what we can do for her, whether it's a walk, or a snack, or a game.

She also has an uncanny sense of time. She gets fed at 6.30 every evening and will come and make herself known within a minute of the half hour.
I've no idea how she does it. There's no cue she can pick up from myself or my wife; we don't have the tv or radio on at that time and there's no event other than her meal that occurs at that time.

However, she does get really thrown when the clocks go back or forward, although it only takes a couple of days for her to adjust.

She's the canine equivilant of a bimbo. She plays dumb about the things she doesn't want to do, yet is actually very smart when it concerns the things that interest her.
She's very cute, sweet natured, and fun to have around, but is the very antithesis of the traditional dog that is loyal to it's pack and would die to defend it.
She's absolutely the center of her own universe.

You could use them all, and they would be correct, but for many things we have adopted the American spelling. Since there are only 30 million of us, and 300+ million Americans, we adopt your spelling in many cases.

We started out with British spelling but slowly it is disappearing. Words with the U, colour, honour, neigbour haven't changed yet.

We have had a few differences over time at this site, I believe we spell license in the British way still.

Oh, and where are cars parked, are they in 'car parks' or 'parking lots'?

St. Augustine..."I don't know much about it.
St Augustine is Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer and admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city and port in the continental United States.

Very pretty city, stay at a B&B in the old area, and take a walking tour. There is a place where they tell you the history, amazing how many great places were found and built because of drunken sailors.

Right, now they are both used in Canada, though I believe in England they would still use theatre.

In Canada we are about 3/4s of the way closer to the USA. We still like some British TV shows, British humor, and British authors. And, I think we have a closer link to European cars...just to stay on track.

It is interesting, I don't think we think about these differences too often. We use "cheque" most of the time and I am glad because "check" is a little confusing. If someone used "check" it wouldn't be considered a mistake.

"Quay" is definitely used here, but since we go to Florida a lot in the winter we can easily go with "key".

We would say "parking lot" rather than "car parks" Remember, 80% of our TV shows come from the U.S. and they have a bigger influence than our past history of being closely tied to Britain.

However, we go to England twice a year and there are some differences. I like the term "takeaway" instead of "takeout" food.

Looked at my BILs new F-150. He likes the gas mileage, says it should get 24 mpg because of direct fuel injection and a turbo that only operates as needed.

He compared the 150 to a Toyota Tundra and he said the 150 had a lot more passenger room and much better gas mileage.

He got about $3000 in discounts, and the day he was to pick up the new truck they got a $500off coupon in the mail. He took it to the dealer and they deducted it and asked him to write a new cheque (Check in the USA) and he wasn't even expecting that additional discount.

They said the 6 foot long box would cost the same as 4 1/2 feet so he went with that. It has a cute little fold out step on the back bumper and a little pole that folds upward to hold onto as you climb in....we call it the old man option.

He traded in a 10 year old F150 and he said the price he paid was just $2000 more than he paid 10 years ago.

Boring is good! No surprises, so you must be happy with the deal you got, and it seemed to go pretty well, no hassles with the dealer.

I talked about my BIL buying an F150 and he got about $7000 in discounts, plus $500 after he signed all the papers. Maybe Ford has a new system for selling cars, and they try to make it as easy as possible.

Good luck with the new Explorer, let us know how you are enjoying it.

I currently reside in Florida, but I spent the first forty years of my life in England and hope to continue spending the next forty here.
I've still got another twenty one to go if I'm fortunate enough to live that long. ;)

Reminds me of "The Story of Adam & Eve's Pets"

Adam and Eve said, 'Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now, we do not see you anymore. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us.'

And God said, "I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me."

"Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And it was a good animal and God was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, 'Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal.'

And God said, 'I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.'

And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them. And they were comforted.

    And God was pleased.

And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, 'Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well.'

And God said, "I will create for them a companion who will be with them and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve.

And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility.

    And they were greatly improved.

    And God was pleased..

    And Dog was happy.

    And Cat . . .

didn't care one way or the other.

    :P
