I'm having a "minimally invasive" outpatient procedure done. They go in through the belly button. MUCH shorter recovery time. The hardest thing for me now is at work. My doctor told me not to lift anything over 20 lbs. One of my workers quit the day before we returned from vacation. He quit sent me a text message at 9:35 pm on Sunday night. He was due in at 8:00 the next morning.

I'm going to have to buy a car just to teach my kids to drive. I think my wife's car (2010 BMW 750Li) is too big & too expensive

    When I was 16 I drove my mother's 56 Hillman and later a 1960 Corvair
Oh well, I grew up to be fairly normal.

BMW did something with the suspension tuning in the coupe vs the sedan. Don't know what it is.

All RXD coupes get the Sport suspension whether you order the Sport Package or not. AWD 3ers don't get the Sport suspension in any case.

Mostly, with about 25% interstate and 75% in-town, I'm getting about 23-24 MPG.

GG, I am glad you are enjoying your bimmer. I think your gas mileage will get a big boost upward around 10k miles.

If you get a chance let me know how it compares to the Acura, handling, ride, power, cornering, room, overall feel.

Hope you continue to love your car.................

Marrying into money doesn't always mean that you get money. It took us 45 years to finally get any of it!

Magazine - Book wholesalers are the guys who put paperbacks into grocery and drug stores. They had exclusive territories and these stores need magazines and books so they had a license to make money. I always dreamed that if there is reincarnation, I would like to come back as the son of a wholesaler. The son always had the easiest job around, a nice office, and good pay.

The one I called on to buy my books was the book buyer. While I am selling him the new releases he was eating his cereal and toast!

I can tell you one thing, you worked hard and made a very nice life and you are enjoying yourself....I think that has got to feel better than working for a father in law or even inheriting money. Not that there's anything wrong with it, just not as rewarding. ;)

I don't mind the dash, and love the exterior looks.

I wanted to like the LaCrosse...it is a pretty good attempt at making a good road car, but it isn't quite there.

I was more open to it because my radio wouldn't work in the bimmer for the whole one hour drive to Toronto. I called the dealer on the way and made an appointment for the next day. When we got to the stadium I tried taking out the key and putting it back in again. The 3rd time the radio came on. I cancelled the appointment, but the warranty is up in October and I don't have patience for this stuff.

Also, the lady who sat in the Buick before me got out, and I asked her what she thought. She said it seemed pretty good. I asked her what she was driving now, and she said a BMW, but repairs were costing her a lot, now a few $1000 for a transmission repair. She said she will probably buy a North American car next time, cheaper to run.

    Makes you think!

I was really impressed with the top of the line Fusion I rented in Florida last winter. It was only a 4 cyl but had power and was very comfortable.
Nice simple design too...not as jazzy, but very tasteful.

    "...and later a 1960 Corvair."

My sister had a new, black 1960 Corvair that was the car from Hell! Just out of college, she worked in Washington, D.C. The stupid car would suddenly just die on her out on the beltway in rush hour traffic going 55 mph. The dealer worked on it a hundred times, to no avail. Some mornings it would crank, and some mornings it wouldn't. The radio would come on when ever it desired---middle of the night, on the road, etc. Headlights would go off at night while she was on the road. This once caused a rear end accident.

She finally visited another Chevy dealer and traded it for a Chevy II convertible, black on red, which she enjoyed very much. The day of the trade, she got the Corvair cranked and it behaved long enough for her to get the new car. Funny thing. The dealer called her a couple of days later and asked if she had ever had any trouble with the Corvair. Her response, "No more than usual." :D

I don't blame you, sometimes there is nothing worse than an intermittent problem. The next time it doesn't work if timing and scheduling allows bring it to the dealer (without shutting off the car) and show them its not working. This way, they can't say the dreaded "we can't duplicate the problem"

Richard - on marrying into money. Oh, I know! Funny thing with back then. I was a mere 18 at the time. She was down in Maryland while I was up in Jersey. She told me her father really liked me but her mother really didn't but that she thought her mother was actually crazy - not just crazy for not liking we (which turned out not to be so) but crazy as in should be seeking treatment. to my 18 year old brain the first thing i do when i hear the mother might be crazy is to look for signs that the daughter is crazy. well, she's a teenage girl. if you are looking for signs of craziness they will be there!

We made an interesting couple going out. She was a full half a foot taller than me.

I'm going in for hernia surgery on the 8/19.

Hope yours goes as well as mine did on 6/17. I had it done outpatient at one of the big local hospitals, but still cost over $16K. My piece is something less than 10% of that. Either way, the first few days were a little rocky & I was wondering if the pain would end before the medication did. Worked out fine -- about day #3 it got noticeably better and by day #5 I was off the meds. By 10 days after the surgery I felt better than I did before, as having the hernia created its own set of problems.

    In any event, good luck.

Hey richard! Nice to be back. Still have that daily obsession/complusion and or addiction to log in and see how things are going... been busier than normal. Hopefully when we get our old house sold and the new one "settled in" more, I can post more often, help you keep oldfarmer and jmonroe under control.

I had laparoscopic surgery for an inguinal hernia with possible bilateral hernia. Luckily I only had the inguinal hernia. They gave me a couple oxycotin pills (yikes!) pre-op for post op- pain. Set an I.V in my hand, went down to pre-op waiting, met my anestesiologist and doctor. Asked my doctor if he got plenty of rest last night and if he had brought his "A" game. (It was 7 a.m) He laughed. Waited about 20 minutes. They put me to sleep by reading me some of jmonroe's and oldfarmer's old jokes... next thing I know I'm in post op. Checked in at 6a.m... checked out about 9:30 a.m. I have an incesion in belly button and another about 3 " lower. Haven't really needed the pain medication they gave me. The site bled a bit, difficult to sleep last night as I usually sleep on stomach and side. Glad it's over. Thhis morning not nearly as sore. ;)

I've always wanted to see a pro tennis match. Amazing how hard they can hit the ball. I'm sure it's all the more impressive in person.

I play men's doubles at the tennis club on Thursday's. Hopefully I'll be able to recover in time to play next week.

Actually it was kind of funny on height. When I went into 8th grade I was reasonably tall compared to everyone else. Not the tallest by any means but in the upper half in height. Well, I stopped growing at that point and everyone else in the class shot up. By graduation time I was number 2 or 3 when we lined up by height. There were shorter girls but maybe one shorter boy.

    Correction…ALWAYS.

    (without shutting off the car)

I tried that too and they saw it but just squinted and said make an appointment. Finally it took the replacement of the amp in the Genny to correct the problem. However, when I said something about replacing it, that seemed to fall on deaf ears but when the field engineer said it, it was done.

You were probably his 3rd procedure of the day!!

Believe it or not, but I did that. Drove 15 minutes to the dealer, and I said, see the radio isn't on can you check it while the car is still running? The said, no, it will take a few hours to do checks on the electrical so you have to leave the car here for a few hours, and it is almost closing time, so bring it in tomorrow.
    Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!
How come I have had radios in cars over the last almost 50 years and have never had a problem?

I think that way of finding problems is almost over. Now you hook your car up to the computer and it figures out what is wrong. Or, I will need Car MD

My sister had a new, black 1960 Corvair that was the car from Hell!

My mother liked her Corvair. The steering was nice and light because of the engine in the rear (we didn't know about feel of the road back then).

It was a nice little car for getting around the city. More room inside with the floors being flat. Lots of nice glass area.

It was also fun putting the groceries in the front. They were noisy though.

My father always said Ralph Nader was crazy, the Corvair was an excellent car.

I had it done outpatient at one of the big local hospitals, but still cost over $16K.

In Canada it would be done, no charge. I went to the Shouldice Clinic in Toronto which specializes in hernias and only hernias. People come from all over the world, especially if the first one doesn't work. You have to stay for 2 nights, 3 days because they want to monitor you before they release you.

I had to pay to stay over, $140 a night, but that includes all meals.

The good news, once it is done it will be stronger than ever and shouldn't happen again, at least on that side. ;)

That’s the thank you we get for having a high tech radio; anything for that matter. Only the dealer has the where-with-all to fix things today. All the shade trees have been cut down.

I would ask the dealer why they won’t change the amp since they can’t repeat the problem even though they have seen the problem. If that fails I’d go to another dealer or go higher up the food chain.

I would check on that...I am sure I wasn't supposed to play for a month or two after the procedure. We play men's doubles too, we should have an international match for the Edmunds Cup.

It was amazing to see tennis live. You do see a lot of things you don't catch on TV. If you watch from the side, the ball is really moving. YOu can really see how athletic someone like Serena Williams is, can run all over, knows just how much to hit the ball, and does it so smoothly. Last year we saw Federer play.

Personally, I wouldn't go too often, but once or twice a year it is a really great thing to see professional players playing.

One thing more about hernias. One guy at the clinic said he got his one side done, and when he got out he went on a cruise with his wife. He picked up a suitcase and ripped the other side, he was back for the 2nd one.

I answered before I got to your post and got the same response. It doesn't help them, they have to test for it. I know it will be in the garage for 6 hours and they will say it is fixed, but it will happen again. Or, I can shut the car off for 3 hours and it will fix itself. This time I took the key out and put it back in 3 times, and that worked. Better than taking the car in and waiting for 6 hours.

You should seriously consider it. I think you are better off watching tennis than playing tennis next week.

Just check the weather....it has to be a nice day to make it all work. Try to get some centre court games, but often the ones on the other courts can be interesting and fun.

If they have a Buick LaCrosse try sitting in it, just watch your knee getting out.

Its really crazy to me. I guess the fact they don't see it working means nothing. Obviously if you take it in when it is operating normally what are they going to find? :confuse: If anything, at least you have it on file in case it craps out after the warranty is over. You would have a good case w/ them saying you brought it to them while in the warranty period.

Maybe it's Ohio humor, but we've spent a fortune in public monies on building stadiums for these two independent businesses and we still don't have much of a pro team in either case. At least the Bengals get lots of media attention for their player's bad sides off the field. And the Reds are in what place?

Feel sorry for Hamilton County, Cincinnati and the rest of the county, who have a sales tax to pay for the stadium and have all kinds of bad things written into the contract they signed that benefit the Bengals and give the County little control over what they have to spend for the stadium and the team.

Maybe I'm just bitter from when I won season tickets to the Bengals, good seats, and couldn't give them away back in the early 80s.

Hey, how about you guys knocking it off on this subject already, HUH. :(

We’re headed to Myrtle Beach starting tomorrow at noon for a week with Son #1, just like last year. I loaded up the car with the suitcases last night and I’m heading over to his house after work to get his van loaded up so we’re ready to hit the road tomorrow at noon. Both of us only work half a day when we do this (got it down to a science). Now with all this talk, I don’t think I want to take the suitcases out of the trunk. I guess Mrs. j is going to have to do her share so I’m vacation capable, right?

This year not only are we going with Son #1 (3 boys), we’re meeting Son #2 (boy and girl) down there this time. We have a 5 bedroom condo with 3 or 4 baths (I forget the details). If I thought I was at the zoo last year I know for sure I’ll be there this year.

I may be ready for a hospital stay when I get back, just don’t want to go in for the cutting part.

I would say honk your horn when you pass through Pinehurst, but we're leaving for North Myrtle Beach in the morning. We're going down for a rock band competition among old '50's and '60's bands. It should bring back lots of beach music memories. Fortunately for us, my best friend from high school has a beach cottage across the street from the rock music museum where the bands will perform. We can just sit on his front porch, sip drinks, and enjoy the music. Hope you have a fun week at the beach.

imid....kyfdx....stadiums....a sore spot with me. Glad I live in Butler County. I don't have to pay the "stadium tax" unless I choose to shop in Cincinnati.

I don't mind the REDs so much. The Bengals....well.....there's a reason their owner is widely despised.

REDs are built for a very long playoff run. They're just beginning. This year wasn't it. But, I still suspect they're building this team up. They'll be an elite team the rest of this decade.

Yup, that's the theory. Mine was (I'm sure there's a fancy medical name for it that I don't know) near my navel & the surgeon said it was one of the larger ones he's seen.

The Corvair, Falcon and Valients were all new for 1960.

Out of the three, the Valients were, by far the best and in my opinion, the Corvairs were the worst.

I don't buy into the Nader scare but they did handle differently and they were so light in the front end that they could be a handful on a windy day. When the front end parts such as the idler arm and ball joints would get worn out, then they were REALLY bad.

They had a nasty tendency to leak oil and the leaks would start almost a quickly as they were fixed.

By 1965, they finally got much better but Nader's damage had been done by that time.

The Chevy II's were neat little cars, really and that 194 six would really move those cars especially if they had a stick.

A later model Chevy II with a 283 or a 327 engines were REALLY sleepers!

When ever I've gone under the knife they always as me: "What is you tolerance for pain?" I always respond "I don't like it". That must be the wrong answer because they always load me up with a supply on Oxy this and Hydro that. I just end up throwing it away because I don't need it.

I did take one of their little pills once and got so dopey that I was agreeing with everything my wife said. If she had been smart she could have had me sign away my fortune and I wouldn't have remembered.

I do remember telling the doctor to wake me up fast after he was done so I could go back home and start loading the truck for market. He thought I was joking--I wasn't.

The most pain tolerant person I ever met was an old farmer from Mass. who once got his hand caught in the power take-off of his tractor. Pretty much ripped it to shreds. He continued to work until nightfall and then went to the hospital.

When they saw the mess he made of his hand they asked him "Why did you wait so long, the pain must have been terrible?"

His reply was "I had another hand but that field wasn't going to plow itsel"'.

Later, when he retired he drove a school bus. He was constantly being called in to the boss because parents would claim that he flipped them off as he drove by. He would then hold up his damaged hand with the fused knuckle joints in his middle finger and explain: "I can't help it". :surprise:

You are asking the wrong guy.
I am the right guy. ;)
The SEL/SES/Titanium are upscale models, so driving around on hard tires to get an extra mpg or two doesn't fit with the rest of the packaging.
My mom just bought a Fiesta, but I spent months researching and looking at the new Focus. She wanted one, until she changed her mind.

If anything, at least you have it on file in case it craps out after the warranty is over.

Yes, warranty is up in October so would like to have it on the record. I am quite sure though they won't fix it after the warranty whether I take it in or not. They will say they have covered it for the warranty period, and they will say they are off the hook.

I might have to buy another one and get 4 more years. On the other hand, it does seem to fix itself if the car sits for a few hours. Maybe I can get the extended warranty. I wouldn't count on them fixing it after October though.

I guess Mrs. j is going to have to do her share so I’m vacation capable, right?

If Mrs J carries the suitcases there is less chance you will get the Big H!
    Good idea!
Have fun in Myrtle Beach....better you than me. I don't like family staying with me or staying with family. Visiting is fine, but living together, not so much.

We have a fold out sofa that converts to a bed in our house, but I purposely bought one that isn't very comfortable for sleeping on.

You would have told her where you buried all the tin cans in the back 40!

We had guest over for dinner tonight, and though I am not much of a chef, I made a tremendously good dinner that was very easy to make.

All you need is a tray thing for heating vegetables.

Main course was chicken breasts, skinless boneless.
I cut up peppers (one green-one red), onions(sweet), and zuchini and started cooking those first for 20 minutes.
Then I cut up pineapples and mushrooms and added them 20 minutes later.
5 minutes later I added the chicken to the barbeque
Then 15 minutes later I added sliced bananas and peaches to the bar bq cooking tray.
The chicken cooked for 20 to 25 minutes
I also heated up little potatoes while this was going cooking.

This was pretty easy and was like gourmet dining.
Desert was canalones with fresh rasberries.

When we bought the barbeque the salesman said experiment, use any fruit or vegetable you like. The peaches, bananas and pineapple barbequed were incredibly good.

    It was like gourmet dining
