I passed. If the guy had been local, I might have taken a chance.

Smart move. I think if the guy was legit he wouldn't rush you along, and he would make arrangements to see you after the show.

It sounds like he put a lot of work into the car, to only want $5000 out of it. Is it of much value as a show car if it is made up of parts from all different cars? I thought the idea was to make it look as original as possible.

Richard, did I hear that right?

Driver is giving you a pass on your grammar because

GG, good call. a good portion of it for sale.

If it doesn't feel 100% right, don't do it. Many of the older cars

have no title and it's up to you to prove it to DMV (BMV).

Model Ts and As have lost their owner base and can be had for a song.

63 Fords are the next to go. I'm waiting for the 64 to 72 Muscle Cars

to hit the block at giveaway prices. (or me being too old to drive them).

That's right, "drug" as the past tense for drag and "grits" belong on the other side of the Mason Dixon line. Honey, sweetie pie, hun, and "you all" are almost universal now.

I thought the idea was to make it look as original as possible.

There is a current trend right now to take classics that aren't particularly valuable and "resto-mod" them. A popular example would be something like an older base Camaro. People take them, drop a crate motor in, more modern suspenion, add A/C etc. It makes the car a nice driver and you haven't wrecked anything because the car wasn't that valuable to start with.

So it's only us in the narrow strip between Canada and the Mason-Dixon line that have to watch our grammer. Everything else is okay as a regional exclusion? :P

Charles Dickens ate there and stayed the night in the 1830s. Presidents from Garfield to Bush 41 ate there and spent the night.
We ate there Saturday evening about 5. Didn't get there in time for the car show. Saw a few, but wasn't in the mood to go early to see the cars; sounds like I should have gone early and let my better half sit while son and I walked the car show. Next year. Mako...driver.....not that it was a bad car. And, if it was bought right, filled with junk yard parts finds, and the seller needs the money, I can see the $5K selling price.

This was one of those situations where my heart wanted one thing (to buy the car), and my head said something else.

There were little things....the motor mounts being one.

When he started it, it took a good amount of cranking for it to fire. He said it had been sitting too long because he trailered it in. Maybe. But, to me, a red flag.

The engine compartment was shiny with dressing on the hoses and wax on the chrome bits. Hard to tell any seepage. On the other hand, there were some parts that looked old on the motor. Maybe me, but I thought aside from the shiny bits, the motor could be long in the tooth and tired. And, while not a deal breaker, once it was started, it threw out some black smoke. Could have must been running rich and needed minor work. Or, with a little "Miracle Oil" was hiding something much more costly.

I know just enough to know what I don't know. Maybe a good thing, or maybe passed on a really good deal.

Perfect. Count me in. Only I suspect you have more years left than the dog. Assuming I am correct you'll need to get another one.....

I am ready to downsize in the dog world (current yellow lab and whatever mutt is 95 pounds!) and one that doesn't shed and is a pleasant personality is great.

    Keep that thought.....

I saw someone at Costco that had a labradoodle that full grown weighed like 35 pounds. That's near perfect.

"As in: they drag the box today, they drug it yesterday, and they have drugged it before?"

If we're going to use the dialectical or regionally popular form, then we would have to conjugate it this way: they drag the box today, they drug it yesterday, and they have drug it before.

Though currently considered to be nonstandard, the fact that it is used so frequently in the South and Mid-West may change that classification. As to when, who knows? These things take years. It is probably best to use the preferred standard form even when living in a dialectical area.

It's great that you and Driver did research on the topic. I most certainly bow to your correct form of the verb.

This is from 2009. I went in 2010. A few hundred cars. Maybe 12 hearses.

They did a cruise through the main cemetery drives--it's a couple of square miles in area.

It's big. There are 6 pages of thumbnails of cars that were there.

I bought my first house in 1976. While checking

things out I found a switch in the hallway that

seemed to do nothing. Off-On go look around. Off-On

Nothing. The next day my neighbor sees me come home

from work and asks if everything is OK. I say sure, fine.

He says we were just wondering why you were flashing

the backyard flood lights off and on so many times. Aha says I.

Richard64 - I love "Bless Your Heart." We have another way of saying that here in NY, but I can't say it here due to the TOS agreement:)

Graphicguy - I'm glad you passed on that frankenstein. I can just see you trying to explain your patented "One Offer" system to the guy from TX.

roadburner & kyfdx - Funny you 2 have been going back & forth mulling over cars for your young driving boys. 3 Friends and I were talking about this at dinner last night. What are we going to do when the time comes. Keep in mind my son is the oldest of all of our children & he'll be 5 at the end of September. None of us are wishing our kids grow up faster than they already are, but we're all car guys so cars come up A LOT in conversation.

My best friend & I agree that we're going to buy a car maybe when our kids are 14, drive that car a few days a week to work to put some miles on them so they can have something reliable, but not brand-new. We both were fortunate enough to get brand-new cars when we got our licenses at 16.

My son has his heart set on a Laser Blue MINI Cooper S Clubman. He's been in love with Minis since he was 2. Maybe I have my kids drive the Prelude if it is still around. I've got time to decide this one, but time with them does FLY!

My other friend says: "I'm going to have to buy a car just to teach my kids to drive. I think my wife's car (2010 BMW 750Li) is too big & too expensive while my truck's (2010 BMW X5 M) 550 horsepower is too much for a young driver to handle.

C'mon now, y'all. You forgot the most important one:

    fixin'

As in: "We're fixin' to go to the store now".

Even though my mother has lived in California since she was 9, every time she would go back to Tennessee to visit friends and family she would start using that phrase within 24-48 hours of arrival.

    "fixin'"

I grew up with a good friend who used all of the dialectic language so popular in the South. He had that Southern Drawl to go with it. When he arrived at Harvard to begin his PhD in English, they nearly laughed him out of the department. He learned very quickly to adopt only the most formal speech of the English language. I went to Boston once to visit him. Some of his classmates took us to dinner. He and I began to converse in "Southern Talk". His friends never could figure out what we were saying. :D He became a very successful English professor. Some years later, he married a Simmons---of the Simmons Mattress fortune. He never worked again.

Mako....the BMW is new, so of course I'm still on my honeymoon with it. It is a 335i Xdrive coupe.

I just turned a 1,000 miles on it.

    Is it fast? Ummmmm....Yeah.....Very!

Truth told, it's probably the fastest (o-60 and 1/4 mile) car I've ever driven. And, that includes some pretty fast cars I've driven in the past. Someone asked me last weekend what 0-60 times were (why that's important, I don't know). But, going by the trade rags, it's in the high 4 second range. My seat of the pants says that's true. It's an automatic, and it's a good one. It snaps off shifts at exactly the right time. Plus, there's torque all over the rev range (including down low...no turbo lag....and I do mean none). It just pulls and pulls strong right up to redline.

    Brakes....again....excellent!

Yes, new car smell is still there. I can still smell the leather. ;)

No, I did not pay $50K for it. It stickered just shy of $55K. I paid about $2K under invoice (including $1,840 manufacturer incentives and another $1,000 for the "drive to the olympics" promo they had going on this summer). So, I came in somewhere around $47K and change.

Stereo in the TL was better. But, the one in the BMW isn't a slouch (Harman Kardon).

I let my son drive it a couple of times. He said it feels as fast as a Mustang GT, handles like a Porsche, and rides better than the TL. Not a bad combo.

It certainly does handle well, and is amazing the way it handles less than perfect pavement.

Aside from a little road trip to Amish country, and a few trips to the airport, I've been just scooting around town.

So far, the lowest MPG was 19 MPG, and that was with a bunch of stop and go traffic jams, no highway, and the A/C on. Mostly, with about 25% interstate and 75% in-town, I'm getting about 23-24 MPG. Will be taking a longer trip to Chicago shortly, we'll see where we end up on the MPG.

I guess you can tell I like it.

I have about 25 posts I am going through, just got back from tennis. Saw Serena Williams win against Julia Georges and 2 other matches.

Got to sit in a new LaCrosse and could have taken one on a test drive, but I am going to explain why I wouldn't consider buying a LaCrosse, even if it was $20k, tomorrow.

Gigi is 7 years old (and not GOGI).and is small so hopefully she will live to be at least 15. I am 64, but I act immature so most people think I am much younger.

"I did have a chance to marry into...money."

Take it from one who knows. Marrying into money doesn't always mean that you get money. It took us 45 years to finally get any of it! :P When your inlaws (outlaws) think that their daughter married beneath herself, you don't see much money. Fortunately for me, I didn't marry my wife for what she had; I married her for the person that she is. There's a big difference. It all worked out fine. My wife loved my parents and the feeling was mutual. She was like a daughter to them. In turn, I worked hard to have a good relationship with her parents. It was civil, but never warm and loving. You can't change people. You just try to accept them and live your own life.

When we got to the tennis tournament in Toronto there were Buicks parked outside. You could sit in them and if you wanted, you could get a ride over to some tester models and take one out for a test drive.

I said to my wife, "Let's try sitting in it first and see how we like it before I go through the trouble of going on a test drive, which will mean sales people calling me, getting emails, and being bothered for the rest of my natural life.

So, I got in the drivers seat, and my wife got in the passenger seat. My impressions were, I think the dash will get dated pretty quickly, looks like it was inspired by Star Wars...lots of chrome and big and swoopy style. The dash comes up very high and even with the seat up and my head on the interior roof of the car, I could barely see any of the hood. My wife said she couldn't see any of the hood and her view made it totally unsafe for her to drive...she couldn't judge where the fenders were or where the hood ends.

By the way, if you want to look back it is pretty hard to judge as well, the back roof and shelf are a long ways back (making a small trunk) and it is hard to see over the back shelf.

Seats were really trying...they look nice and are big and cushy, but no real support.

Then the interesting thing was when I got out I banged my right knee on the jutting out instrument panel. My wife got out and she said she banged her left knee on the jutting out instrument panel. 2 for 2 had a problem with the instrument panel, you would think some engineer would have caught that.

I thought a test drive would be a waste of time, there was no way I would buy this car. I would prefer the Fusion to this car any time.

This Edmunds review confirms a lot of what I thought, light steering, soft cushy ride, anemic 4 cylinder etc.
    Edmunds review Buick LaCrosse

I know some people won't like my comments. I think this car is a good attempt at bringing a Buick up to date, and it will appeal to some people, but it sure isn't my cup of tea.

Thanks Driver for the review. I was just talking to a co-worker who drove one recently and he explained the same thing about banging his knee getting out. This car was on my list to try, but, after these reports and looking at the specs it may be too small for me.

I sat it one at the Philly Car Show but the seat was so far forward I couldn't judge the car very well. I don't mind the dash, and love the exterior looks.

Years ago we left it up to my brother and SIL to get us tickets to see Neil Diamond perform here in the Burgh. Never again. They didn’t act as quickly as Mrs j did in previous years when she got the tickets. For all I knew that could have been a chimpanzee up there mouthing to a CD.

    kyfdx. cdnpinhead, mako....thanks!

kyfdx.....BMW did something with the suspension tuning in the coupe vs the sedan. Don't know what it is. But, I test drove both a 328 and a 335 coupe vs sedans of both models. I liked the ride/handling of the coupe more...which is one of the reasons I had my eyes on the coupes. I also drove the 335is (it was a demo). It had the previous generation 335i motor (N54). Didn't feel a lot of difference between it and the "plane Jane" 335i coupe, except it rode harsher and had some bigger tires/wheels (could explain the ride) and minor trim differences. To me, wasn't remotely worth the price delta.

nyc....I had heard they had some fuel pump problems with the N54 engine. Don't know if they sorted those out or not. But, was glad to get the updated version of it in my car (N55). There are strong rumors that both the N54 and the N55 motors are way under rated by BMW (300HP-300 lb/ft). I don't doubt that.

mako.....the 335 you're looking at uses the N54 motor. It uses dual turbos, whereas mine uses a single turbo (dual scroll). Check and see if it had a recall on the fuel pump. If so, you should be good to go since BMW extended the warranty on the fuel pumps until 100K miles. If not, see if the car is still under the original warranty and have it checked out by a BMW dealer. I don't know how extensive the fuel pump failure was. But, I'd certainly want to know the background of the car I'm looking at.

Performance should be similar between the one your looking at and mine. The one small nit, I did notice some turbo lag in the older, N54 motor.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

That far up... how could you possibly tell if you're watching a woman or a man? They’re wearing shorts…does it make a difference?

LOL, ...very observant. The men wear shorts and the women USUALLY wear tennis dresses.

Thanks for pointing out the there's and their's much appreciated, someday it might actually sink in. I do know the rules, just my writing is faster than my brain works.

I am ready to downsize in the dog world (current yellow lab and whatever mutt is 95 pounds!)

Labs are usually pretty good, so I imagine you are in control, but 95 pounds is a lot of powerful dog. I sometimes see people struggling trying to control their dogs, that are too large for their capabilities.

If you inherit Gigi she will love your Lab, for some reason she loves big dogs. She likes to hold onto their noses and look right at them.
