I would not mind one again, but the choices in small ones are so limited now, and I have no need for a big one.

I hear you. There aren't any "compact" pickups anymore - just large and extra large.

Even though the hauling capacity was weak, I really liked the idea of the Subaru Baja - 4 doors and a small bed in the back.

When I graduated college back in '85, a friend of mine bought a new Mazda 2600 pickup. Red, grey interior and a stick. We went to school in Phoenix, but he moved to Denver to take a job. He traded the truck after only a few years because he had problems getting the carb tuned to deal with the altitude.

Richard, should you ever give in to your desires to buy a truck, have you considered getting a shell for the bed? You still get the practicality of the hauling capacity, but the shell would keep whatever you are hauling nice and dry. Plus, I like the looks of a pickup with a shell on it.

Richard, I am a truck guy also, and I have never owned one either. My dad always drove a truck and I took it on dates as a teen. Maybe that is why I like the darn things.

I will get myself one at some point. I would have already but my wife is not so crazy about them. One of these days I will surprise her !! My current favorite is a top of the line 4x4 Nissan Frontier.

  • Your friend has a fascinating life moving around the world as he does, and I have to admit that if the oil refinery I was contracting at in Sicily a few years ago had offered me a full time job, it would have been difficult to turn down. I just loved the Italian country side and culture. Even the mob was nice to us (four Americans) :surprise:

My family and I have truly enjoyed our life in Utah, though, including the culture, available activities, and variable weather. I've had job opportunities out of state but have opted to stay.

The tabernacle where the choir practices and often performs is an amazing feat of architecture, perfectly balanced for harmonics, and originally tied together with wood stakes and natural wraps. It was only recently seismically upgraded. Did they do the pin drop test with you? On tours a missionary will stand at one end of the building and drop a small pin, which is clearly audible by the audience at the back end of the building. Incredible.

I'm glad to hear you were treated well on your visit. Some of our liquor laws can be a bit quirky, but since the Olypmics in 2002 the most bothersome laws have been altered to be more friendly to the diverse culture that now resides here.

If you ever get a chance to return to Utah please drop me a PM so I can provide the insider's tour recommendations. :D

OF, that is a great piece of property. How many acres do you have? Nice looking fleet too, lots of variety.

What you did was the difficult part. Putting your picture where we could look at it from a link.
To paste a picture into your post:
*Hold cursor over picture...and do a right click
    *Click on "View image information"
*Look at the "Location" info...on your picture it was this, http://oi53.tinypic.com/rjqjr8.jpg
    *Copy that line
*Now go to your post. Press the IMG button below.
*Paste your image in the next space.
*Press the IMG button again at the end of your location info.
*Press a few space bars just to be extra safe.
*Check the preview button, just to be sure the picture took.

Oh yes, I am back, but I have serious jetlag and lots of work at work to catch up on. Trip was great, especially Pompeii, Venice, Dubrovnik, went by Mt Etna before it just exploded again.

Got the invoice for my 2012 535iX. No increase in price so Dealer As price for a 2011 demo was the same as the price for a 2012 with more features that will be standard.

"...have you considered getting a shell for the bed?"

I have; but I don't want one. I just don't care for the look. I did discuss purchasing the bed cover for luggage. A separate company makes those for the Dodge Ram at a price of $600. They come with a warranty against any leaks. I really don't need a shell for the antique furniture. I make it a rule never to haul furniture in rainy or damp conditions. It can warp the furniture and ruin the finish.

I worked for the State Highway Department during my college summers. They let us college kids drive the pickups; one of my friends and I used to drag race them on lunch breaks. The fastest was a 1967 Chevy.
One day we were supposed to be painting some guardrails along a road that bordered the local high school band camp. My friend was driving one truck and I was following. My friend saw a hottie in a halter and Daisy Dukes marching on the parade field and slammed on the brakes. I was watching her too, so I slammed into the back of his truck. Luckily I was driving one of the oldest and most beat-up Fords. We pried the grill out a bit and all was well.

All of which is a long way of saying that I got pickup trucks out of my system over three decades ago... :P

"Some of our liquor laws can be a bit quirky"

I liked the Utah laws in 67-68 when I did 2 years in the Army there. You bought the bottle at a state owned liquor store, carried it into the club, and bought a mixer in a glass. You mixed the drink yourself, as little or much as you liked. The state liquor stores were somewhat strange, we were caught short when found out Arbor Day was a state holiday for liquor stores, and they were closed. Drank beer that day.

About the same time, Kansas liquor laws were really bad. You had to become a 'member' of a club. Could cost you from zero to whatever they thought they could get. You carried a bottle in, and they took it and it went behind the bar. I've had a couple of drinks from a new fifth and the bottle came back half full when I left. The locals that were buddies of the owner/barkeep/waitress would drink for free from various peoples bottles.
  • Utah just recently abolished the 'member' requirement to the relief of many. The reputation is still there, but really, we're down to just a couple of laws that may catch visitors by surprise. State liquor stores are in place and Sundays are still off limits for purchases. Saturday evenings are a fun spectacle at the grocery stores; long lines of people holding beer :)

I'm afraid you won't be able to take advantage of the self-serve laws anymore, though. At least you don't have to be sponsored as a member to enjoy a local brew and slice of pizza.

My job allows me to work with some of the small to mid-size craft brewers. Last week I was in Park City talking tech with one of the brewery owners when a guy approached us out of nowhere. He'd attended an event from out of state where the brewery's beer had been served and gushed over how it was the best he'd ever drank. Wanted to know how/where to pick more of it up. After he left I commented to the owner that circumstance was a little odd, and he just smiled and said it happens all the time. Go local!
  • Deal! Don't forget to bring an appetite for some of the local eateries. :shades:

I went to Moab about 8 years ago to mountain bike with my (then) fiance. We stayed near park city in a campground and had a few brews at the wasatch brewery on the way home. Picked up a nice cycling jersey with this on the back:

  • Ha, ha. Wasatch has come up with some great marketing ideas that play off the state's various reputations and misconceptions. I love it. If we can't laugh at ourselves then we shouldn't be laughing at all.

I agree about the mountain biking in Moab. Slick Rock is a tough trail and certainly the most famous, but it's just one of hundreds of routes in the area. One trip I snapped my chain about 5 miles into the Slick Rock loop, which I repaired by removing two links and reattaching the ends. Ever try Slick Rock without your top two granny gears? Not recommended. that was the same trip I watched my bud endo down a 15+ degree slope after deciding he wanted to see how fast he could downhill it. That made me feel better about my chain :P

OK, you convinced me. With all of the antiques you delve with, I’m surprised you haven’t gotten a pickup before now. If I did what you do I would have had one long ago. How have you managed to get by without one? I know you’re too cheap to rent trucks all the time. :P

"How have you managed to get by without one?"

Since 1986, I have had SUV's that worked most of the time. Before then, I always had a large station wagon such as Buick Estates, Chevrolet, and Plymouth. I have rented a truck two or three times, but built the costs into my furniture prices. I did cave in on a truck rental last Fall. Some good friends of ours had the dining room table and ten chairs that we had always wanted. I tried for years to get them to sell it to us. They finally decided to size down and give it up. I paid $500 for two men and a truck to go to Charlotte to get it. Still, for the price that our friends sold us the furniture, the rental fee was worth it. ;)

*I put my snow tires with rims for the Cabriolet for sale on Craigslist.
*I got an email from a guy who says he is very interested, but he is a marine engineer and is at sea, with limited access to the internet.
*He said, I should get a Pay Pal account and he will send the money via Paypal, and he would send an agent to pick up the tires, if I gave him my address.
*I called Paypal because it sounds a little funny. Especially, the fact his grammar and spelling weren't that great for a marine engineer.
*I was very impressed with customer service at Paypal. They advised against replying to this person. They said these deals on Craigs List only work when they are done person to person, and do it for cash only.
*I think it was really good that they were so honest. Customer service actually said 99% of the time these are fraudulent people who ask for Paypal accounts for Craigslist.

*I thought it might be worth a chance, I mean what can go wrong? I did sell a TV this way and that worked out. I thought it might be worth a try, all he would have is my email address and my address..........but who knows what someone could do with that information?

Kind of scary how easy it can be to become a victim!!!!!!!!

    Funny thing that.

My oldest daughter is training as a customer service rep with a bank. She takes care of this one guy and gives him her card - real standard procedure stuff.

Today he calls her - here at home! He'd looked up the name and managed to figure out where she lived. She freaked and called her manager at work who promptly called the cops. Turns out to not be the first time this clown pulled such a stunt. He's been banned from the bank now - they won't do business with him at any location (two countries' worth) and if he sets foot in her branch the cops will be there. Dang.

Meanwhile I am officially amongst the unemployed - er, retired. I'm not ready for this financially or in a lot of other ways but it'll be OK and I certainly don't want to change matters. I'll get my rest, do what I can to get ready and when the hospital calls off I go.

I'm not ready for this financially or in a lot of other ways but it'll be OK and I certainly don't want to change matters.

I think in many ways people adjust to a drop in income better than you would think. When I lost my job for the 3rd time in 4 years we only had one pretty small income to live on...my wife's.

We couldn't go out and splurge on a new car or anything like that, but we went to Florida that year, went out less often, and did a lot of things that don't cost a lot. Went for a lot of day trips, long walks, tennis, etc.

Some costs go down when you aren't working. Clothes, fuel cost to commute, lunches out etc.

Good luck, I know with your attitude you will be fine.

About that bank thing and your daughter, people can put together things easily from little bits of information......all that took was for the guy to do a reverse phone number search. In my case, an email address and my home address could add up to something for a fraudster. Craigslist said not to even write back to the guy.

I got the invoice for the 2012 535ix and there was no increase in price. So dealer A built in a $2500 increase for the 2012 when they wrote up the deal, Dealer B was much smarter, they gave me a 4% discount-whatever the price of the new one would be - that makes way more sense.

So the 2012, with a few extras like a rear camera, HiFi Professional Sound, Sirius radio for a year, nappa leather with lumbar support (I know, you need that in a bimmer), 19 inch wheels, On board navigation system with voice recognition, comes out to the same price as the 2011 demonstrator with 2000 miles on it would have been from Dealer A.

The salesman at Dealer A wrote and said he hopes I enjoy my new car, and hopefully I will see him when I am ready for a new car. Fat Chance!

    It pays to compare!

    >Craigslist.

Craigslist has gotten some bad publicity here in the Metro Dayton area in the past year. I recall at least two times people have been robbed and/or assaulted while meeting with Craigslisters at a neutral location. One was shot while showing a cycle, IIRC. He was the son of a policeman. I believe another involved a large diamond ring.

A neighbor has been advertising cars on CL and buying and selling that way. He gets paid in cash from what little he has said at times. He may have a permit to carry. But that world of trading is not for me. I sold one car in 1980 about by advertising in a local Trading Post newspaper before most people could understand computers and internet and before Craigslist.

I sold my sons contour that way in 2009. Pretty much like putting it in the paper. Flakes calling, people wanting to rush right over but never showing, etc.

Finally got someone to show up cash in hand (not enough, but close...) and took the loss just to be done with the whole damned process.

I also used it to sell my old kitchen, and this tells you all you need to know.

I take good pictures, do a detailed ad 9dimnesions, etc.). Very professional. And don't price it all that high (might have started at 1K, then dropped to $800). Low enough that if you could use it, you would call to haggle, right?

Nothing. So I schedule habitat to come take it away, but they run out of room on truck and have to cancel. So, now it is Tuesday and all the new cabinets are coming thursday, and I literally have no room to put them (garage stuffed full).

So, to save paying the contractor to knock them down and get a dumpster, I change the ad to "FREE" but you have to pick up the next day (Wednesday).

Well, guess what the magic word was? My phone rang off the hook. Still flakes (some women really wanted them, and she called first, but wondered if they would fit in her SUV). finally get one guy that lives nearby, seems stable, and has access to 2 pick ups and swears he can be there the next day. And he came, right on schedule, and took the cabinets and countertop.

Great deal for him (newlywed type, ran out of money trying to fix up their new house), saved me money in the long run.

I also used it to sell my old kitchen, and this tells you all you need to know.

I still have a dishwasher, microwave and countertop with a very good stainless sink sitting in my basement from when we did the kitchen redo in January 2010. I gave the oven and dispoal to a niece when their oven died. Gave the fridge to Son #2 for his basement when their old one started to make noise. I have been procrastinating about how to get rid of what I still have and don't like the idea of craigslist, heard too many stories about that site. Maybe an ad in the local paper is the way I'll do it. And I better do it soon. If Mrs. jmonroe bumps into that counter top one more time I'll be posting with a lisp.

Now here is how you solve your problem of getting rid of the old convertible while moving up to your 5 series - give me the old car. No fuss, no muss. I'll figure out the getting it to the USA paperwork. How great you'll feel for giving a sick buddy something that he really wants and you can even have the Ody if yo want for a carry a lot vehicle when you need it.

When richard sees your fine example he'll probably revisit his will and leave me two slices of toast instead of one. Bless his heart.

I find that I do about as well to donate some things and take a tax deduction. Last week, I donated a rattan, glass top dining table and six matching chairs to our church's youth auction. We also donated a large dog crate used only twice in an attempt to train our impossible dog. The church gave a letter where you fill in the value amount yourself. I've also used Goodwill and the Salvation Army. Both of those agencies will pick up your items at your home. I just hate to deal with the flakes and the telephone calls.

You have a great opportunity to show you are not the same cheapskate that your fellow Monroe is. For the next year more or less my income is cut in half. Just send me s monthly check for the difference and I'll be made whole while still not getting that BMW I want unless driver comes through.

We (mostly I) are having to face some facts - like ever owning a BMW is getting to be a pretty slim chance. The Italy - Ireland vacation may also go by the boards. Actually I should check. It seems that in Avellino, near Naples, while many LaSalas left, many stayed. They now run the place. Not as elected officials. My nephew and a buddy did a bum around Europe trip a couple pf years ago. When they got to Avellino they were warned not to be out late at night and of the dangers of the area then they looked at the last name on my nephews passport and said "You can do whatever you want." From that moment on he was placed at the head of any line he stepped into and lacked for nothing. Maybe they'll pay my airfare and give me an Alfa Spider to take home.....

I've gone to look at four cars advertised on CL in the last 4 months... I didn't rob anyone... ;)

I just bought one, last week... Drove up to Columbus to see it.. Had a big wad of cash on me, too.. The seller did say that he had had some pretty flaky responses to his ad..

I don't think it's any different than advertising elsewhere... you just have to use common sense, and walk away from anyone that doesn't respond in a normal fashion to e-mail and phone calls (like Nigerian princes).

(also, advertising expensive jewelry might not be the thing to do... :surprise: )

    Re CL
you just have to use common sense, and walk away from anyone that doesn't respond in a normal fashion to e-mail and phone calls

Just watch for people wanting to use Paypal or who are sending agents to pick up the goods. The customer service rep said 99% of the time when Paypal is requested for use with CL it is a scam. Don't sell unless you get cash and you actually meet with the potential customer.

I read posts from users on Paypal and some said the money was cancelled once the goods were sent. You can be very careful, but the thieves are always one step ahead.

I am sure many deals are completed without any problems on CL, but best to be on guard. I think buying is a little less problematic than selling.

here is how you solve your problem of getting rid of the old convertible while moving up to your 5 series - give me the old car.

If I don't sell the snow tires you might get some nice BMW snow tires sent to you soon.

My son used a variation of that on the house he is rehabbing. Piled a lot of stuff out by the curb, old range and some odds and ends. Everything was gone the next morning.

If he took you to dinner, it would be a chipped ham sandwich warmed up on the hood of his Genny.

I can tell you've never been to the Burgh to get a chipped ham sandwich. They're not served warm...never any warmer than room temperature. Try that around here and they'll know you ain't a local.

Geez, don't put a Southern twist on it and ruin a good thing will ya ! :(
