As a diehard Eagles fan, I am upset about watching them choke away another game. However, the problem is with Andy Reid and not the talent.

Who was the more foolish person. . .

Well, I consider myself one of the members of the grammar police, and I like to give kudos when they're warranted. One time in very many will a comparison between two things include the "more" word; the plebians nearly always use "most."

Old Farmer? I'm not at all sure. Well, I guess if I bought a sewing machine I'd become Old Tailor -- I've certainly got the old part down cold.

Reconsidering, I guess I'm being something-ist, since I'm assuming that a farmer generally doesn't have sense (or education) enough to use proper grammar.

    Either way, well done. :D

have always seemed extremely strange to me -- more of that one-upsmanship thing that I never understood.

In the West back in the '60s & '70s weddings were pretty simple affairs -- ceremony in the church & a reception in the church's social center or at the bride's home. The whole thing cost under a grand, plus the bridal stuff (dress, flowers, clothing, etc.). The notion of a sit-down dinner with a live band and God-knows what-all else for tens of thousands of dollars was something I had to learn about.

That said, it's happening out here now too. The wedding industry is not to be denied, nor are the bride-zillas.

That's the British Isetta, unlike the European Isetta it had three wheels so that it qualified for the lower motorcycle tax rate. I almost bought a pristine Isetta in 1979 but balked at the price($1000). Now they are going for $30,000 and up.

I went home and put together the offer in an email. I offered $500 over invoice

Congratulations. I like the idea of a compact truck, they just seem to be more civilized, but pretty useful for everyday use for most civilians.

$500 over invoice sounds pretty good. You are not a grinder but you did your homework and the price seems to be a win/win for all concerned. It sounds like the salesman was very helpful and is the kind of salesperson who is easy to work with.

"European cars are a required taste."Well, maybe not required, but certainly an acquired taste.

I thought of that after we got in the car and drove away. I don't think my wife would have understood if i said I have to go back and change my post....I wrote required instead of acquired.

I blame it on the jetlag. My head still feels like a bowling ball. There was a 6 hour time difference in Spain. It takes one day for every hour to recover from jetlag. This is only day 4!

Stick, thanks for the advice. I told my fiancé that many of the decisions are hers to make. She will keep the price down (at least I hope). The place that won is The Merion in Cinnaminson. It's a nice venue and everyone we talked to raved about the food. It's pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Glad you enjoyed the Eagles loss today. I am stunned they are a 1-3 team. Tough not to be a Philly fan living where we live. Watching the Phils now and just watched their 4 run lead shrink to one. Great...

My daughter says white isn't a color, but I think it is one you don't get too tired of.

Your daughter says the same thing I always heard about colors. We have a poster buddy (‘gogi’) in here who is an artist so maybe he can expound on why White is not considered a color. I seem to remember it’s because White reflects all colors but Black IS a color because it absorbs all colors. :confuse:

I have had two White cars and wasn’t crazy about either of them. The first was a ’62 Chevy Biscayne that I got too good of a price on from an uncle who was told he couldn’t drive anymore when I was about to be discharged from the Navy in ’63 and my infamous ’95 Bonneville beast that I got while living in SC. The beast disliked this color so much it started to shed it in sheets in 2000. Back in that era these were plain Jane White cars. Today they have pearl White that looks vastly better than the old Whites and Mrs. jmonroe has said several times, “those White cars look nice, maybe we can get one like that someday”. Not one to let that go by, the last time she said this about a month ago, I said, “yeah, I’ve seen the new Sonatas in that color and you’re right they don’t look bad at all. Do you want to drive over to the dealer and look at one since we're not that far away?” I got one of those disgusted looks so I figured I better drop the subject. :(

FWIW, I see that the 2012 Genny 5.0 R-Spec will not be offered in Pearl White anymore. They only offer it in Black, Titanium and Silver. Who ever heard of a manufacture not offering a model in White? :confuse:

I wasn't always old or a farmer. In a previous life I obtained a master's degree in social work so I'm not totally ignorant.

I owe any grammar skills to the nuns in elementary school who beat them into me at an early age.

He said the offer was fair, except that this truck had the ipod adapter, which I hadn't figured in.

Did I leave some money on the table? Probably, but I'm not a grinder.

Congratulations on the new truck but I have one comment.

I’m not a grinder either but how much did the ipod adapter cost? From what I’ve seen about these, they are under $50 but maybe I’m wrong. If I’m right it sounds like your dealership is the one that is the grinder. But as long as you’re satisfied with the deal that’s all that’s important.

  • I'd say I feel for ya', but I know where you've been traveling and I'm so very envious :shades: Italy is truly a wonderful country to tour. I hope every moment was a blast.

Speaking of Italy, I have a Fiat 500 rental I'm motoring around in for a couple of days. They offered me a Charger, but I opted for the 500 to bring back some memories from my own Italian travels. It's fun, but at 4,500 miles the thing is a cacophony of squeaks and rattles. Parking is a breeze. It brings a smile to my face. Gas mileage should be great. The motor loves to scream. The automatic transmission shifts are firm and quick. It's funny how the odd vehicles are the most memorable.

Oh, my cure for International travel was to go light on sleep during the travel. For instance, going to India, with either 11.5 or 12.5 hours difference, I'd skip sleep for about 40 hours aside from a nap here and there, and then crash hard the first full evening. That typically reset my internal clock. When I traveled I always had to be ready to work about a day after arriving, sometimes even the same day. It's not easy.

Just read a review of the 2012 Genny in our (crappy) local paper and it once again got knocked for the ride.

I know you didn’t like how they ride…even to the point of dumping your ’09 lease as soon as you could. Me, I don’t think the ride is bad at all but I wasn’t expecting the cushy ride of the Avalon you had before your Genny. The thing that really surprised me was when my SIL from Florida liked the ride of my ’09 enough to buy hers and she was coming off of an ’06 Town Car lease. She liked her ’09 so much that when she got an offer she couldn’t refuse, to turn in her ’09 lease early, for an ’11 she jumped at the deal.

I just came back from visiting my brother/SIL last week and my brother from the Burgh area went with me. He drove her ’11 as much as he could when we went places. After about a day of driving her car around he said he liked the feel of the car too. It didn’t take him too long to like it. He particularly couldn’t get over the adaptive cruise control that didn’t let him creep up on the car ahead of us no matter how hard he tried. I don’t have that version in my ’09 but it is something that will probably be standard equipment in a few years if the insurance companies have their way as they usually do.

I know not everyone likes it and I’ve mentioned before that Mrs. jmonroe thinks it’s too firm also but it’s not her car. That’s why I didn’t feel bad about trading in her ’06 Sonata for my ’09 Genny and passing my ’05 XG 350 onto her. I couldn’t believe that in the 3 years she had that car she didn’t complain about the ride of it and that car was not nearly as good of a ride as the Genny. I guess having the bun warmers in that ’06 trumped everything. Her idea of a nice car is one that rides like her couch. I don’t like a harsh ride but I don’t want one that feels like I never left the family room.

Yeah, that one surprised me too, when you mentioned it before. I guess the ride is just soft enough for some that it isn't objectionable. It is also worth a note that since the major suspension/steering revision in 03 the Town Car doesn't even ride quite as soft as it used to.

Me, I don’t think the ride is bad at all but I wasn’t expecting the cushy ride of the Avalon you had before your Genny

I am glad you like it, heck I wanted to like it. There were a lot of great things about that car and everytime I see one I think what a sharp car it is. I know one thing my fiance misses it. She was just telling me yesterday I need to get my butt moving and buy something new.

On another note, I noticed that the other person in my neighborhood who had a Genny dumped it for a new Sonata turbo. Then two weeks later I noticed the DTS in his driveway is now gone too and another Sonata turbo is in its place. That Sonata must be a heck of a car to get rid of a Genny and a Caddy for pair.

Some interesting findings about colors from yahoo:

20% of North America's car buyers drove off in white vehicles this year. Black and silver were also popular--17% of buyers preferred these shades. Blue ranked fourth (13%) and gray rounded out the top five (12%).

: In Europe, black (solid and with effect), silver and gray reign, accounting for 26%, 20% and 18% of the market. Russians overwhelmingly choose silver cars (30%) while India's market shows a preference for white and white pearl (17% and 11%, respectively) and silver (27%.)

Among the least loved? Yellow/gold and beige/brown--just 2% and 5% of drivers, respectively, prefer these colors.

A 2007 Ford Motor study found that 39% of consumers will leave a dealership if it doesn't have a vehicle they want in their color of choice.

Italy was amazing...Rome, Rivenna, Pompeii, Venice Florence, were all magnificent.

We try to do that too as much as possible, but even after 5 days I could fall asleep at about 9 pm and I am wide awake at about 3 pm...the internal clock is really mixed up. It stans to reason to try to stay up as late as you can, and you should get up at the right time, but it doesn't happen in real life. I don't know how you got up the next day and went to work, I couldn't do any work today and it has been 4 days.

I have no idea how shift workers manage.....but I think they have a hard time adjusting and it does take a mental and physical toll on those people.

My first trip out to India I spent 40 hours traveling, arriving in town at 2:00 PM local time. I don't sleep well on flights anyway, so I kept myself awake with movies, books, work, and such. When I arrived I learned they wanted me onsite that very afternoon, which involved working in an oil refinery with the typical dangers of such an environment. We had a little discussion about realistic expectations and why it would be unwise for me to approve drawings and as-built construction with no sleep in two days

Keeping the topic on cars, I was fortunate enough to be provided drivers wherever I went. They're crazy on the roads. Traffic laws are mere suggestions. Lanes mean nothing, including oncoming traffic lanes. Personal space is non-existent. We always stuck the new guy in shotgun position to watch and listen to his reactions when he thought his life was ending. We laughed because we had all experienced it ourselves. After a while you resign yourself to the fact you just may not make it home and there's not much that can be done to change that fact, so you might as well enjoy the view....from the back seat.

Although I have had my white Mustang with black top/interior for about 20 years and it's a classic color combination, my favorite colors run towards gray/brown.
I had a Titanium SHO, which was a really good color.
My favorite was probably my 2007 Fusion with Alloy paint.
Ford has an Earth Metallic color which is very similar.

There was a stop in Ravenna Italy and an optional trip to see the Ferrari plant and museum in Maranello. It would cost $170 each to go to the plant and museum for a tour. I don't think too many went...if it was closer and not as expensive more people would have gone.

Food in Italy is usually pretty good. Most of Europe has pretty high standards, bad restaurants just won't last very long. I don't like squirmy creatures in my pasta too, and I don't like fish with the eye still in them...they look like they are staring at me while I am eating them.

Surprising, at the buffet meals where there was so many kinds of food to choose from, how many people would get a hamburger and French fries!!!

Watching the traffic in cities like Rome is fascinating. Like you said, there are no real rules...just keep moving forward. On the bus tours the bus would never stop at a stop sign. The lanes are narrow and I don't know how we made it through some hairpin turns.

Motorcycle drivers will go up the middle or squeeze between cars if they can.....they will try anything.

Most drivers from the US or Canada couldn't drive in a city like Rome....it would be beyond our level of experience.

"My SIL was late for his wedding."

Well, at least he showed up to get married. We attended one wedding where the groom took a powder. Thirty minutes after the stated time, we all knew something was wrong. Finally, the father of the bride came forth to announce that there would be no wedding. He invited the 500 guests to attend the reception because the food and drinks would just be wasted if we all didn't attend. Naturally, the bride did not come. We all went and tried to make the best of it. We never felt so sorry for a human being in our lives. The poor girl was devastated. The groom could have had the common decency to at least have told her the night before. To leave her standing in the vestibule of the church was criminal.

The next week, the bride and her mother personally returned each wedding gift to each invited guest. Guests who lived in other cities received theirs in the mail. Doing that must have been as bad as writing thank you notes after a funeral. I suppose that it was best that the groom didn't appear. At least the girl didn't legally marry the bum. That may have been worse.

I wasn't late to our wedding, but I was late picking my wife up after the reception. While she changed clothes at the reception, I went to our apartment to change my clothes and pick up our Pontiac Star Chief which was hidden in the garage. Our friends had found the car and done a number on it. They had removed the battery from the car and placed it on a shelf in the garage. They then proceeded to coat the steering wheel in vasaline covered with white rice. The entire car was then rolled in toilet paper, and popular sayings inscribed in black shoe polish. Though my best friend helped me, it took quite some time to get the car ready to drive. Mean while, all of the guests, plus my wife, wondered where I was.

The next day I had the car detailed. The black shoe polish was hell to remove. We traded the 1960 Star Chief a month later for a 1964 four door Pontiac Tempest. I loved that car. It was smoky blue with light gray interior. It had that neat boxy look.

RB, can you give me a quick education on the 6 series?

The 5 Series is related to the 6 Series much like the Nova was to the Camaro and the Falcon to the Mustang- a sportier and more luxurious coupe/convertible version of a sedan. The first 6er was built from 1976 to 1989. Pick of the litter is the 1985-1988 M6. Capable of 160 mph and a 0-60 time of less than six seconds when chipped. The next 6er appeared around 2004 with somewhat polarizing styling. Available as a coupe or droptop) with -in the US- a V8(645i, 650i) or a V10(M6). The new 2012 is only available with a V8 in the US. Nice cars, but the second and third generation cars are a bit porky for my tastes.

I think this is a 64 Tempest. They were nice cars with simple lines.

Too bad it wasn't a Bonneville though. They looked really nice at that time. One friend in the neighborhood left school in Grade 11 to get a job and went out and bought a Bonneville like this. That was when you could leave school in grade 11 and get a descent job that paid enough to buy a new car.

I think that poor lady should be thankful she found out the guy was a jerk before she actually got married. Like I say, it is great when bad things can be made into really good things.

I always thought it was stupid to name it "6" it should just be a 5 coupe. The 3 series is available in sedan/coupe, why not the 5? It just confuses things.

I don't like squirmy creatures in my pasta too, and I don't like fish with the eye still in them...they look like they are staring at me while I am eating them.

Really? I know someone who doesn’t like those eyes staring back at you either.

When we were living in SC, and it was time to celebrate one of those milestone anniversaries I asked a few locals where I should take ‘you know who’ out for dinner that wasn’t too far away. They said you don’t have to go far at all, take her to the Hotel (I can’t remember the name now). This hotel was right on the edge of the town where we lived. This was a very quaint, very Southern type of old wooden hotel that was known to have a very good restaurant. It was one of those places that was on the National Register of something or other. Obviously, being a Yankee, fairly new to this town, I didn’t know any of that. Anyway, I make reservations and when we ordered I get my traditional slab of meat but Mrs. jmonroe orders some kind of fish that is served with a chrome dome thingy. When she takes the dome off, there it is looking right at her. She jumps back in to her chair and the dome drops, making a little bit of noise. Several people sitting near us look to see what is going on. It was one of those ‘damn crude Yankees’ looks. The maitre d’ is now in a mad dash to our table. Almost out of breath when he gets there he asks, “is there a problem mam”? Mrs j also out of breath, grasping her throat while panting says, “I wasn’t expecting it to be served like this”! The maitre d’ apologizes profusely and says, “the waiter should have asked you if you wanted it served natural or with the eyes removed. He’s fairly new. I’ll have this taken care of right away. I’m very sorry about this”. I’m damn near rolling out of my chair at this point. When he leaves Mrs. j says, “oh no, I hope the waiter doesn’t get fired over this. What’s so funny?” :( She goes on to say, “did you know how it was going to be served”? I said, “huh, I can’t even pronounce it. How in the hell was I supposed to know how it would be served”! Soon we’re into a conversation with several diners at the surrounding tables. One of the women in her Southern drawl says, “oh, don’t worry about it darlin, it’s happened to all of us”. Several of the other women are sitting there nodding their heads yes.

She hasn’t ordered fish, or anything for that matter, with a name she doesn’t understand ever since. :)

What a great story! Usually, I guess the waiter should ask if you want your fish filleted (I think that is what they would say). I would say yes every time, I am not in Grade 12 biology where I want to disect the damned thing.

I prefer the little square fish that come out of a Captain Highliner package.
Not really, but I sure don't want to look at a fish that is giving me the evil eye when I am eating it.

That's a good point, it should be called a 5 something. BMW is supposed to use odd numbers, Audi took the even numbers to be one number higher.

There was a 650 convertible in the showroom when I was looking at the 535. The salesman said it is just a car for enthusiast, low profile racing tires that will be useless in snow, and it just is not practical as an every day car. The new 2012 looks really nice since they fixed up that controversial rear end.

Many years ago, I had a boss whose son called off the wedding the night before. He knew he didn't want to go through with it.

But he did sit down and speak with the bride's parents and offered to repay them for the entire reception. He also gave the jilted bride the tickets for the honeymoon so she could get away with a friend.

My understanding is that it took him about 3 years to pay the money back.
