Thanks! You know, two of our three cars have manual transmissions? That's another feature that is hard to find. I guess I am really odd.

We have extreme weather here in Virginia. Very hot summers, very cold winters.

As do we here in Boston - perhaps worse in the winter than Virginia.

IMHO, leathers feels great and cleans up easier than cloth seats. Although nobody eats in your car, general dirt from your clothes can dirty up cloth.

Cut the power to the water heater at the main house panel first.

You are right if you have an electric water heater. I should have said that but in my defense, in my neck of the woods, almost all water heaters are gas. That bit about shutting off the electrical supply will prevent a cooked bottom of the tank like I mentioned in post 75324. Shutting off the gas to a gas water heater would prevent a cooked tank bottom too but in areas with gas, re-lighting the gas is not as simple as turning the breaker back on. That’s why I said do a partial drain of about 10/15 gallons because the water should be running pretty clear by then.

Your other steps were very accurate.

The reason the draining process is a little complicated is because of opening the valves I mentioned. If you don’t open the high and low point valves you won’t be able to drain 10/15 gallons because once about 3 or 4 gallons drain, the tank will start to pull a vacuum without the venting provided by the mention valves, and once that happens the water will not drain any more. Kinda like that straw thing we all did with drinks when we were kids. We were supposed to learn something from that little experiment and apply it to practical situations. Did you lose your notes from that experiment, I didn’t. :P

OK everybody…just forget what I said about doing water heater drains because, by far, most people don’t do it and they still live happy lives. I do it because it allows the water heater to make hot water faster by not having to heat the crud build up on the bottom of the tank which acts as an insulator. The crud also destroys the tank bottom faster due to its chemical makeup.

Excellent recap, and much more realistic than jmonroe's. I might add one more caveat to your list, and this is one I live by when faced with the daunting task of changing an overhead light bulb, etc.:

I found this one in Canada. Seems if you buy the basic 2012 hybrid model it comes with cloth seats. Sometimes cars, models, and options differ on US cars and Canadian cars. The basic hybrid model starts at $43k in Canada, so I don't think you will want to buy one here.

This is what I found when I built my own at toyota.ca

Your 2012 HIGHLANDER HYBRID 4WD-I Standard Package

    Transmission: Automatic
Exterior Colour: 1F7 CLASSIC SILVER METALLIC
    Interior: Ash / Cloth

With freight (about $1500) and 13% taxes it comes to $50,500. For a small fee (about $2k) I could order one for you. Leather package adds $5500 to the price but probably includes some extras.

By the way, it is just as cold and hot here (30 miles west of Toronto) and though I have no problem with cloth, I would prefer the way leather holds up......plus it just seems more luxurious. I am sure you will get your investment back at trade in time - has to be much easier for resale.

"Never do anything that would position your [non-permissible content removed] higher than your head would normally be."

That is very good advice indeed. I should have used it yesterday. I bent way down on the floor to reach something in the back of a closet. When I started to get up, I heard a pop. I either cracked a rib or pulled a muscle on my left side. If I cough, sneeze, or roll over in bed, I nearly go into orbit. I suppose it will take a couple of weeks for that to get better.

There are times when that could be difficult, but since this is a family show.....

Speaking of which, now I can listen to Howard Stern again with my free one year of Sirius. I can't listen to a lot, but for a few minutes it is fun. No matter what you may think of him, he is a genius....he can put his thoughts and ideas out there and be very amusing.

My Sirius worked for 2 days then went off. I called the 1-888 number and waited for about 10 minutes for a person after going through about 6 different choices. They told me I needed to get an ESN number from the car. I wasn't going out in the freezing cold so I said I'll call back when I am in the car. I was going to work, pulled over to call, and got a message their toll free number had been changed....I guess from 1 hour earlier!!!
When I got to work I called again, got the same message, so called the number the phone company said to call to get the new number. It was an automated voice, so I said I needed to call Sirius. After about 4 minutes she said your call is taking too long, try again. At this point I called the dealer. They reluctantly helped me since I was trying. We arranged for me to get into the car at 1 pm and they would beam down the new signal - you have to have the engine running and be in a clear place. They called and told me about all their extra programs etc., so that is probably the real reason they set it up this way.

2 people at work have free Sirius for a year but they are over the year and are still getting the signal, hope that happens to me. I will really need Sirius on the way to Florida, there aren't any normal radio stations. The few you do get are all preachers telling me I am a sinner. Last time we drove I had to buy some easy listening CDs at a Cracker Barrel restaurant, they probably do a great business selling those.

I was a die hard Stern fan when he was on regular radio, then I lost track of him when he went to Sirius. Two years ago or so I started listening again and while there were some great bits, once Artie was gone from the show it lost something. From what I know he is only on 3 days a week now and its just not worth it to me to pay for the extra "best of Sirius package" on my XM.

Driver, I'm with you on putting in minimal effort to acquire programming that was supposed to be a selling point of the car.

I paid for it when I bought the car and if it takes too much effort on my part, it becomes the dealer's problem.

My Avalon came with techie stuff like homelink (easy load) and bluetooth (not as easy) Back to the dealer I went. Handed him my cell phone and the key fob and said "please make this work". They got a young salesman who "made it work" in 2 minutes after me trying to read and do for an hour.

With many states banning hand-held cell phone use, bluetooth should be a mandatory setup from the dealer. I get very frustrated when I see people in highline cars that must have bluetooth standard yapping on the phone.

While on the topic, you know what I really find amusing are the people that use speaker-phone while driving but are still holding the phone. Do they really think that since the phone isn't on their ear that the phone is being used "hands-free"?

Personally I think he is an idiot and a rebel rouser. But that’s why they make chocolate and vanilla. BTW, I don’t know why anyone would choose vanilla given those two choices. ;)

My Sirius worked for 2 days then went off.

I have XM in the Genny. It didn’t work on my drive home from the dealer but it worked the next day and I never had a problem with it.

They told me I needed to get an ESN number from the car.

At this point I called the dealer. They reluctantly helped me since I was trying.

While taking a test drive without the salesman in Mrs. jmonroe’s new Subie a week ago Saturday, before I signed the papers, I noticed that the XM wasn’t working. When I was at the salesman’s desk doing the paper signing I asked about the XM. He said I’d have to call XM to activate it because that’s the way they do it now even though I have 4 months free (I had 1 year free with the Genny). He also said they would ask for a credit card number to do it, which I did not like. Well, fortunately he was shooting from the hip and was wrong because 2 days later while I was in her car playing with the radio to set her presets, wala the XM was working.

As you guys may remember, because I didn’t like the idea of XM having my credit card number, when I had to start paying for XM in the Genny after the first year, I was willing to pay the additional $2 fee to have a bill sent to the house and I still continue doing that. If they have your CC # they will automatically renew your subscription when the year is up but they will bill you at the prevailing rate. When they don’t have your CC # they will send you a bill for the new rate. I then call them and say I will renew but not at the rate on the bill; I want the same rate that I had the previous year. They then moan and say that was a “onetime” Winback price to keep me as a customer and it will not apply to this year. I say, “OK, I don’t want to renew”. Quickly they say, “OK, you can have it at the same rate you had. Like I have said before that “onetime price” ain’t necessarily a “onetime price” when push comes to shove. :confuse:

2 people at work have free Sirius for a year but they are over the year and are still getting the signal, hope that happens to me.

That has not been the case for me with XM. Shortly before the year is up they send me a bill but as I said above, you can negotiate the price.

FWIW, Mrs. jmonroe thinks I’m crazy to pay for XM but I like it, so I get it. She said, “is this the same radio thing you have in your car? If it is I don’t want to pay for it in my car when the 4 months free is over.” And you guys thought I was cheap. :surprise:

    I agree with your wife.

My wife's "upscale" PT Crusier came with one year free but I could have cared less. Once I made an effort to activate it (hey, I paid for it) just to see what it was all about but they said something about an "activation fee" and I hung up on them. I'll be darned if I'm going to pay for something free.

Shutting off the gas to a gas water heater would prevent a cooked tank bottom too but in areas with gas, re-lighting the gas is not as simple as turning the breaker back on.

Actually, they've gotten much easier to relight. My current water heater (installed by me in 2007) came with a piezo lighter - like your gas grill. All you do is turn the knob to pilot, hold the knob town and click the red button to light the water heater.

We have Sirius in the new Explorer in a 6 month trial. To be honest, we really don't listen to it much. Around town if we are in car together, my wife and I prefer to talk to each other instead of the radio. Locally I listen to one of the two talk or NPR stations.

My iPhone has plenty of music and poscasts to listen to and I can stream any of the stations I like to listen to over my iPhone.

We don't plan on subscribing beyond the trial.

The water heater I put in my house in 2005 has what you described. The igniter system on the one I installed for Son #2 last Sunday has a different igniter system. No red button. You just hold in the pilot button and hold the black igniter button (no heavy click when you push it). When I looked through the little glass window to see if it ignited, it did. Because of thingies like that on water heaters today the price has really shot up. About a year ago I saw a 50 gallon water heater at Home Depot that went for almost $1K (I think it was an electric job) and that did not include installation. I had to do a double take when I saw that.

The igniter that came with my grill in ’98 no longer has a piezo igniter. After replacing it 3 or 4 times I gave up. I now use a butane lite stick.

I agree, it isn't the same without Artie. I haven't listened since he went to pay radio too, but I like listening while it is free. Howard does incredible interviews....asks questions no other interviewer would ever ask. He also has an amazing weird sense of humor. There is no one who can ever replace him.

My friend said don't give them your credit cards. If you want to renew they always have specials. If you go online you will get at least 25% off, so no need to let them automatically renew you at full pop!

Perfect. With all the new technology the dealer should show you how everything works and help you set it up if necessary.

Fortunately, my friend with the 740 showed me a lot, and our tech expert at work shows me other stuff. But, I would have a list of the things to go over with the dealer if they weren't around.

I was driving on a nice toll road super highway and I was passed by a Chevrolet Sonic. It got me to thinking....I thought GM was cutting back on the number of models they had in their lineup, and here is a model I have never even heard of or seen before. So, I check the website and they have 9 current models and 2 that are coming out soon including another Malibu and one called the Spark. That will make 11 car models alone.

Then they have 6 SUVs including an Orlando, whatever that is. 5 truck models and 1 van. That's a lot of models for a company that was going to streamline it's operation.

    Chev Sonic.....this is a case where I'd rather have a 1 or 2 year old regular car, than a new Sonic;

Checked out the Orando too just for fun:

Funny, on this site I haven't heard any one expressing an interest in checking out a Sonic or Orlando...now, why would that be?

Not so sure if it was models as much as duplication of models. Pontiac and Saturn were dropped since they were mostly copies of other vehicles sold elsewhere in the General's lineup.

I still think they are heavy. Why do they need the Traverse, Enclave and Acadia. They are functionally the same. I can see Traverse and Enclave, but in most cases the Acadia and Enclave are sold at the same lot.

That's what I mean. This is the age of specialization, you can't be all things to all people. It just gets confusing and the mdels get watered down. If you want a small car Honda sells a Civic and an Accord, so you go to the Honda dealer to look at the Civic. Who knows what the names of the Chev small cars are. If it doesn't come to mind, chances are you won't go there to check them out.

Driver, Funny you should post this.
I'm a big Sirius fan after we got a trial subscription with my wife's '09 Escape.
It's great for listening to games on trips and I like the lack of commercials, too.
Now I know what happened to all those VJ's from MTV in the 80's.
They are on 80's on 8.
Not an iPod person, although I like having music on in the car.
My Explorer came with a 6 month trial subscription which recently expired.
Over the weekend, it took me three 45 minute or so phone calls to straighten it out, but I'm finally good to go.
When I bought the Explorer, they must have messed up at the dealer because they activated 2 subscriptions under my name.
Sirius kept telling me I had 3 radios, but I know I only have 2.
Not only that, they had the wrong ESN for my radio.
Now I am set up with the multi receiver discount, so it's about $10 a month per vehicle.
It's possible to lose the signal, so I would write down your ESN, then you can reactivate it yourself by phone, or online if you have an account set up.
In the 3 years my wife has had it, I had to resend the signal once.
I also did it myself over the weekend to reactivate the radio in my Explorer.

I have the 1 year for $77 (really 91 after fees) for my Explorer.
Wife has 2 years for $236 for her Escape.
    Only 1 $77 deal allowed and I don't think it's renewable.
You might be able to get it if you let it expire and call back.

I did not have to let it expire and call back on the Genny to get the previous rate in 2011. I have gotten the $77 deal and as you said "really $91 after fees" for the 2 years after my freebe on the '09 Genny expired in 2010. My subscription will be up in March of 2012 and I'll try it again. So far it's worked when I said, "no thanks".

I think it is worth it just not to have commercials. How aggravating to have 10 minutes of ads for every 30 minutes of programing. Think of the time saved if they would just charge for a TV channel and not have to spend 30 minutes to watch a 20 minute program.

I guess a football game wou,ld still be the same length, but it would be better to show some hi-lites or get some analysis, instead of watching ads for products you are never going to buy.

I was calling Sirius on the line that was for openning an account and while I was waiting for a real person they have an ad that says "save 25% by registering online at Sirius.ca (Canadian site). So, I wouldn't automatically renew with them unless I was getting at least 25% off the MSRP.

So far, I like it, but not enough to pay the full amount for it.

IS the Orlando really coming here? I don't think so. The Sonic is here already. Another move to keep up on the really small end. The Spark will even be smaller. Yeah, you don't need that many lines.

Off for blood again tomorrow. Ugh.

So maybe I left some money on the table, but both sides are probably OK with it. ;)

You need to get a DVR. Its gotten to the point that I hate watching anything with commercials

I have noticed that too. I actually like watching programs after they have been recorded first....just speed through the commercials which can last 5 minutes in a row. Tennis is great recorded. Skimming through commercials, time spent getting in place etc can reduce a 2 hour game to 1 hour. Time is valuable, and more time to do other things is much appreciated.

Oh yes, they are out now, but I don't think I have seen one. Today is the 1st Sonic I have seen (that I know of). I have seen quite a few Kia Souls, so I really have to wonder why Kia can sell small cars and Chevrolet's doesn't....just from my observation. Seems they would be better at concentrating on models that could sell. Maybe the Malibu and Impala, though they seem to be the weak link in their segments too. I see way more Fusions than Malibus, and Impalas are pretty ancient...lots of more interesting choices than that.

    Off for blood again tomorrow.

    Hope everything goes well.

Interesting! I didn't realize that, so I looked it up and you are right!

In January of 2009 GM announced it planned to launch the car in the US in 2011.

In a sudden about face, on Friday, GM’s North American President Mark Reuss decided to scrap the vehicle.

“The best thing to do for Chevrolet is to focus on the brands we’ve already brought to market: the Traverse, Equinox, Malibu and, soon to come, the Cruze,” said Marget Brooks, GMs director of small car marketing said. “We feel that with those vehicles, Chevrolet has plenty of options for the modern family.”

GM will still sell the car in Asia, Europe, and Canada

Now, what is this about Canuckistan????

If I had said Amercastan there would be hell to pay!!!!!

Funny, on this site I haven't heard any one expressing an interest in checking out a Sonic or Orlando...now, why would that be?

Pretty easy. The Orlando is only sold in Canada, so you're not going to get the US guys talking about it (and most of the forum is from the US.)

The more important reason is that we're not the target market for them. I've read good things about the Sonic. The Orlando looks kind of cool. I'd def. check it out if I was in the market for that kind of car ... and lived in Canada. :P

It's term of endearment. I think of it as per the second definition:

    Canuckistan

    Can I use Canucksylvania?

Ah, in that case, no problem....I like that definition too.

    I agree, me too.
