In and Outs have been popping up all over the Dallas metro area for the past year. I think we'll end up with about 20 of them. Good burger but I don't get all the hype. Seems to really have a cult following with Californians who have been transplanted in Texas. When the first two stores opened here it was a 5 hour wait, with a well orchestrated drive thru setup complete with hired security for at least the first month. For a burger. Crazy. Business has been doing very well though.

THERE OUGHTA BE A LAW that is so stringent and so heavy with fines and penalties for driving while on a cell phone.

So will you also apply those laws to drivers talking to passengers?

That almost sounds like what went on in the Pittsburgh area about 7 years ago when Krispy Kreme came to town although the wait wasn’t nearly that long. Their arrival was on the 11 o’clock news. There was even a very large one near me in a local shopping center. I never understood all the hoopla about those donuts from when I had one about 25 years ago in the south somewhere. The grocery store bakery dept has donuts much better than any thing Krispy Kreme had. The store near me closed after about a year, sat empty for a while and is now a Chic Fil A. That place is always crowded. You can only fool the people around here for so long and Krispy Kreme barely got out of the batters box. If you held a gun to my head I couldn’t tell you where one still exists around here for at least 30 miles.

Krispy Kremes never did it for me.

Burgers - we don't get In and Outs here. Five Guys works. Of course I'm supposed to be off fast food for a while...

I would love it of they opened a Chik Fil A around here. Actually my wife would like it more because I'd get it out of my system... She hates them but I really like them and always stop by one on trips.... Drives her nuts.

never had a soda cracker crust

Perhaps soda cracker was a misnomer - let's change that to a crisp, matzoh (hope spelling is right on that - unleavened bread) like crust. I lived in Chicago for 24 years, so that is my description of some of the pizzas there.

I mentioned Uno's and Due's for pan pizza - excellent. I love the pizza at the HOME RUN INN. Also excellent - Costco sells them in their freezers. But lots of Chicago pizza is spicier and have thin cracker-like crusts - awful to easterners who are used to New York style.

Bottom line is you get used to the pizza you grow up with!

If they opened a Chick Fill A here

Funny you should mention that. They just opened their first store here in Boca Raton at the Town Center Mall in the food court. I've heard great things about that store for many years. Haven't eaten there yet, but would like to know what I should order when I go there next week!!!

    Drivers talking to passengers

YEP! If they are talking to their passengers on their cell phone, for sure they should pay the fines. But why would a driver talk to his/her passengers on a cell phone? Gotcha!

Copying two previous comments: "Basically, it is mass produced food, made in a central location, frozen, then shipped to their restaurants so any one can warm it up.
Thats one of the reasons I avoid those chain restaurants like the Olive Garden."

A few years ago, one of the food wholesalers opened up a 'retail' outlet. We walked thru. Most of the food was packaged in large quantities, in our 2 person family we really didn't find anything to buy.

But, it was very interesting. I noted to the wife that we were seing the entire menu selection of most of the places we ate. Including smaller non-chain restaurants. Almost everything that we ate was coming from the food wholesaler stock, hard frozen in a large pack. Pull a serving out, run it thru the oven or grill, add the sides, most of which were also in stock there, and there is my dinner. Salad was there, in a huge plastic bag of about a bushel size.

In a large city, there still are probably a lot of family owned restaurants that prepare much of their food from 'scratch'. But in the small town I live in and the
moderate sized city nearby, it's coming from wholesale food supply stock. It's just a local assembly operation. Finding and/or knowing where the 'scratch' cooking is located is something I don't attempt to keep up with. I would guess a lot of these also go in and out of business.

A chain the size of Olive Garden probably 'produces' much of its main menu items itself and does not buy these from wholesale. I actually like their food, although I do think it is overpriced. Now Red Lobster several years ago seemed to have lost control of its food quality. The last try, both of our meals were almost uneatable, so we haven't eaten there in years.

    Mass produced/frozen food

Down here in south Florida, we have all the chains (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Carrabas, Pizza Hut, Outback, to name a few) but we also have many, many mom and pop restaurants where they make all their menu items to order. Great assortment of Italian restaurants, Chinese restaurants (egg rolls and won tons are not made or cooked to order for obvious reasons), Kosher style Deli's, great steak houses (Ruth's Christ, Morton's, New York Prime) and some great seafood joints (Joe's Stone Crab, Deep Blue Sea, Key West House).

Most people down here in Boca Raton, Delray, Palm Beach, Aventura, Riviera Beach, etc, demand quality food where price is no object. I take my Dad to New York Prime here in Boca every Fathers Day, and we don't order drinkks (liquor) and I can't get out of there for less than $150 which includes entree, dessert, and soft drinks. But, the food is outstanding.

But I still love my McDonald's double cheeseburger w/fries and a diet come. Sure wish we had an In 'N' Out burger place here. And for nostalgia, I am forced to buy White Castle "sliders" frozen. Taste is close to the fresh made sliders, but not the real thing.

My dad was in the food biz in various capacities for a good chunk of his life so those portion controlled wholesale things are very familiar. He could set up a very nice veal parm where all he had to do was heat it and do the sauce and cheese. Since I love veal this was great.

In my early teens he had an Italian restaurant. I thought that was about as good as it gets.

    Can't find a Krispy Kreme

I don't eat donuts because I am a diabetic, except on rare occasions, I will stop in to Dunkin' Donut and have a nice hot cup of coffee with a plain old fashioned donut (ok, maybe two if I've been very, very good). Never had a thing for Krispy Kremes or Winchells when I lived in southern California. I think they are too sweet, but in my case, most desserts and cake are too sweet.

I have one passion, though, and maybe once a year I'll savor 2 Reese's Pieces. Love that milk chocolate and peanut butter. My last job as a school administrator was about 50 miles from Hershey, PA. I'd always volunteer when one of my teachers took a field trip to the Hershey factories and were short a chaperone. Great place if you truly love milk chocolate!

There are a few English mavens around here so I want to tell you about my "dilemma".

My wife, who is very knowledgeable about the English language, myself, and a good friend were asked to spell the word dilemma. We all thought it was dilemna. The person asking was using a computer and when she wrote dilemna it came up as not correct.

We had all been taught in school to spell the word dilemna.

    How would you spell it? Here is the official answer from many sources;

ast week, Heidi Stevens from the Chicago Tribune reminded me of a problem I encountered a while ago: many people were taught to spell "dilemma" incorrectly.
I was taught the wrong spelling in school, and when I got older and checked a dictionary, I was shocked to find that the word is spelled "dilemma." Further, the only correct spelling is "dilemma." It's not as if "dilemna" is a substandard variant or regional spelling. Dictionaries often note alternative spellings and sometimes even nonstandard spellings, but "dilemna" doesn't even show up that way.
"Dilemma" comes from Greek. "Di" means "two or twice," and "lemma" means "assumption or premise." A dilemma is a choice between two undesirable options.
A Google search shows that many people all over the world were taught the "dilemna" spelling, and as far as I can tell, nobody knows why. Michael Quinion goes through some interesting history on his World Wide Words website, but he can't explain the widespread error either.

    dilemna or dilemma?

Krispy Kreme was born less than 100 miles from where I now live---Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In the 1950's and 1960's, they were very delicious donuts. There were little shops scattered around the state. When the founder died, the sons took over the business and the donuts were never the same.

Really good donuts are found in mom and pop operations where they are made each morning and not kept after the first day. We have a small shop here where you can only buy them from 6 AM until 11 AM each morning. You sit at the counter, if you can find a stool, and wait for yours to be cooked. Customers are limited to one dozen per day. There is always a crowd there. They don't fix any other foods. They do offer coffee or milk to go with your donuts. Because of my diet (lost 30 pounds), I haven't been there in six months. After my check-up on May 7th, I plan to make the donut shop my first stop. I will order a dozen and eat six on the way home. :D

taught to spell dilemma as dilemna

I was born and raised in New York City and attended Stuyvesant High School and New York University. When I moved to Chicago, I received my Masters from Roosevelt Universiy and attained my advanced degree from Concordia university in River Forest, Illinois.

I prefaced this response to show schooling in the east and Midwest. Also, took some post graduate courses in California. In every locale, I cannot recall this dilemma between the spelling of dilemma and dilemna.

Since reading your post, I have researched this on google as well as other engines, and have not seen dilemma spelled dilemna, not even as a variant spelling. When I used search engines for dilemna, it corrected the word to dilemma.

As for why you were taught this incorrect spelling for dilemma, I have no clue from my rather lengthly research. I have come across some references to your related story, but no definitive rationale has surfaced.

When searching the etimology of the word, no reference is made or discussed regarding dilemma being spelled dilemna. The etimology is dil-emma, not dil-emna.

There was some reference to a misspelling in an English text as well as an entire regio teaching dilemna as the correct spelling, however this was never substantiated.

    So........dilemma is dilemma, not dilemna.

dilemma or dilemna, tomato or tomayto, potato or patato

I have done some research on spellings and pronounciations in various regions of the country and found that those of Scandinavian decent pronounce English words differently than those of central and southern and eastern Europe.

One of my best friends in Chicago was of Scandinavian decent as was his entire family. They all pronounced "asphalt as ashfalt/ashphalt adding an "sh" sound where there was none. Even their neighborhood pronounced it that way. There were many such examples of this, but I can't recall them all right now.

Midwesterners pronounce roof as ruff as another example of regional pronounciations.

My take on this dilemma or dilemna issue that it was a regional issue or phenomena, and not an intentiona or unintentional error made by a school system.

We were all taught that Pluto was a planet, but later told it was not a planet, but a dwarf - and the discovery of many other dwarfs orbiting our sun.

Yesterday, experiencing boredom as I usually do on weekends, decided to go over to Lexus and test drive their new 2013 GS350. The one I drove did not have the sport package, but it had every other conceivable option available on the car. My first impression was that it was so loaded with technology (two or three different manual controllers to access subsystems of navigation, audio, video, blind spot/lane departure system, front and rear parking sensors with backup camera, to name a few) that it created a serious distraction to driving. Let me tell you that it was so loaded with buttons and a 14" screen it actually made me overly sensitive to beeps, alerts and alarms that I actually experienced some anxiety, and I hadn't even put the car in gear yet.

The ride and handling were superb - but trying not to monitor all those systems was draining to me. Of course, that would dissipate once you drove the car for a few weeks. MSRP was $58650 with an invoice of about $4000 under that. I was most impressed with the handling and acceleration.

When I contrast that test drive to my E350 sport, you can feel the road in mine while in the Lexus, it felt like you were riding on a flying carpet with little road feedback. Even though my Mercedes is well endowed with technological advances, I felt like I was back inside the cockpit of a Beechcraft King Air 350 (I used to fly one). Gauges within gauges, LED within LED, etc. the console is a little intrusive, making you feel a bit chlostrophobic in the driver's seat.

But, all things considered, a truly magnificent automobile. I just like to feel more in control of my car when I drive and the Lexus seemed to distance the driver from that control or sensation, if you know what I mean.

I would definitely consider the new Lexus GS350 once they get all the bugs out of this brand new vehicle (all new vehicles have some bugs surface during the first year I presentation). Definitely a great vehicle in the long tradition of great vehicles in this line.

In every locale, I cannot recall this dilemma between the spelling of dilemma and dilemna.

Thanks to you and Richard for your reply, concerning this word....I thought if any one could shed some light on it you two would be a good possibility.

It is weird though, 2 of the 3 people who spelled the word d-i-l-e-m-n-a went to the same schools, the other person a school over 100 miles away. Also, one article on Google did say some schools in some countries and states seemed to have taught it with the "n" spelling.

I know we were taught some things in school which probably aren't true. Such as racoons always clean their food before they eat it. Most of us thought racoons were very polite clean animals. Now I know they eat anything they can get their hands on.

Then there is the story about how lemmings follow each other off a cliff. Seems this isn't really true. They may get pushed off a cliff because other lemmings come up behind them and some might fall off the cliff. Also, there was a Disney nature show that showed lemmings all falling over a cliff. But, that was set up in a studio to show lemmings commiting suicide by following each other over a cliff...when in fact the staff pushed them over the edge.

Thanks for sorting out the dilemma problem....it would be interesting to know if any one else was taught to spell the word d-i-l-e-m-n-a.

the Lexus seemed to distance the driver from that control or sensation,

Many months ago many people here voiced their opinions that Toyota products do lack that sense of feel of the road (that saying was coined by me, and many don't understand why I say it, but it is the way of explaining that certain cars - give you a sense of the way the road feels...as opposed to driving in isolation).

I have had a rental Camry and RAV4 and I don't know how people can enjoy that isolated feeling, having no sense for the subtlties in the bumps, contours, curves of the road. I think German engineering treats this as a very important feature...possibly others do too, but some manufacturers just don't seem to care....and probably most consumers don't care.

An interesting review, could you try out a Jaguar next weekend?

Also "red-up" meaning clean house as in ready up the house for company.

    Lexus 2013 GS350

Mike, I'd take the Lexus for a thousand, Alex.

When I had the 2010 Avalon and news broke about the Toyota runaway problem I went to the Hi-end dealer in Roanoke. Looked at Benzes, Infinitys, etc. After an hour of waiting they could not put a trade number on my 3 month old Avalon, but sure wanted me to develop interest in their MB lineup.

I would have traded for anything within reason just to make the daily news of what was in my garage (Toyo) go away and give me something my wife would ride in without fear. I drove 3 different Benzes and didn't like any of them. S class almost did it for me, but the Avalon still was better (to me). Their way of holding back a trade number turned me off so much, I wouldn't buy a MB if I hit 2 lotteries the same day.

Actually, racoons are fussy about what they eat and won't touch anything they can't get into both front paws and do clean things. My dad found this out the hard way. He was notorious about complaining about all the wildlife around the house and then feeding them.

So one day he buys a 50 pound bag of crushed up milk bones. They'd take the breakage, grind them to a uniform size and package them as cheap dog food. The pieces were so small the raccoons wouldn't touch them. I got a free bag of dog food out of it.

I will stop in to Dunkin' Donut and have a nice hot cup of coffee with a plain old fashioned donut…

I much prefer a Dunkin Donut to a Krispy Kreme and since Krispy Kreme is all but gone around the Burgh area I’d say the general populace agrees with me. I used to think Dunkin Donut coffee was the best but lately (maybe the last year or so) I don’t like it as much either in the store or bought to take home in bean form or already ground. A few of the people I work with have said the same thing. Have you noticed a difference in south Florida? I’m using Starbucks now. I just don’t make it per the package instructions. I use around 2/3 of the recommended amount and it’s pretty good.

I'd always volunteer when one of my teachers took a field trip to the Hershey factories and were short a chaperone. Great place if you truly love milk chocolate!

A few years ago I read a survey about milk chocolate. A group of 12 or maybe 15 people took a blind taste test with a few European gourmet chocolate makers, local chocolate makers, Nestle, and so forth. The vast majority chose Hershey. I’m with them.

As for what to get at a Chick Fil A, I don’t go there all that often but I prefer their standard deep fried chicken sandwich. Mrs. j won’t eat it like that so she gets the grilled chicken sandwich. I’ve had both and I prefer the fat version; not good for you but I don’t do it all that often. Try both and let us know. That’s the best way to do it. Nothing like empirical data, I’d say. ;)

In my early teens he had an Italian restaurant. I thought that was about as good as it gets.

Other than a good ole American steak flamed on an outdoor grill, medium rare, (which BTW is what I'm doing for dinner tonight) good Italian food IS about as good as it gets. I don't know where she got it but Mrs. j, although not Italian, makes a great meatball. :D

Truer words have never been spoken.

    Few comments:
Olive Garden stinks except for the salad.
Dunkin Donuts coffee is the best (I haven't noticed any change here in south jersey)
Chick Fil A is a pretty good Chicken sandwich. The pickles make it.

The new GS looks pretty nice. I can't get past the front though. I'm surprised it was isolated as the GS was always a little firmer than the rest of the Lexus lineup. (except for the IS)

Chic Fil A ? Definitely the chicken strips/4 pack. NOT the nuggets. Follow with the carrot raisen salad for a nice filling lunch. If you're dieting, avoid the sauces for dipping for the chicken strips; there's enough flavor to the light crust that you will enjoy them. The grilled chicken on the salads also is a good choice. Avoid the milkshakes--they are sinful.

racoons are fussy about what they eat and won't touch anything they can't get into both front paws and do clean things.

I have looked at a few articles and there are different possible reasons given for why racoons wet their food if water is available, but, none of the reasons are to clean the food. It might be because they prefer it to be mushed up, or it could be they like to make sure there aren't any hard objects in the food.

If water isn't available they will still eat the food, and if there is only mud around they will douse it in that.

The racoons I have seen don't seem to particular, they are smart at getting into garbage cans and seem to eat whatever they can find.

Those racoons that didn't like the milk bones probably come from a very upscale neighborhood where better things are available.

OK, maybe even two (Krispy Kreme Donuts) but that half dozen thing ain't gonna keep the weight off. Don't ruin all the hard work

Nutritional facts about a Krispy Kreme
A 3.0 oz. Chocolate Iced Filled Donut

    Calories340 /Fat18 /Carbs39 /Protein5

So, you should probably stay below 3000 calories a day if you want to lose weight. If you ate 6 KK donuts you would be eating 2040 calories which wouldn't allow you to eat much else. Fat should be maximum of 70gms so at 18 per donut you would be way over the max for the day.

Now the important news. To lose one pound of fat you have to burn or use up 3500 calories. You could try to lose a pound a week by eating 500 fewer calories a day. If you didn't eat for a day you would almost lose a pound. It would take about 35 minutes of hard running to burn off that one donut...340 calories! It's just easier not to eat it in the first place.

Chick-fil-A... Chicken breast sandwich is at least 3 X better than any other fast food chicken sandwich

Krispy Kreme.. as Richard mentioned, they used to have great donut shops 35-50 years ago... many, many varieties, not just the glazed.. The current glazed melt in your mouth, if you can get them right off the line at the store (which you can't, because they are almost all closed).. Plus, the no-carb diet just about killed them off.

Dunkin Donuts coffee... very good, especially if you aren't a fan of Starbucks over-roasted coffee (I'm not).

Italian chain restaurants.. not a fan.. Or casual dining chains, in general.

Had my first cup of coffee in weeks this morning. Dunkin Donuts. Yum! Had an egg and cheese on a croissant to go with it. Great.

Yes, your basic chicken breast sandwich at Chick-fil-A is great and way healthier than any other fast food chicken sandwich. You can wreck all that healthy eating with some waffle fries and a coke.

first cup on coffee in weeks

I agree - Dunkin Donuts coffee has a nutty flavor to it and I love it - but only when I can have it with an "old fashion" cake donut or two (only if I have been good with my blood sugar).

However, Starbucks iced Latte is outstanding with a ton of Sweet n Low in it. Truly a fantastic coffee flavor - and it is better than Dunkin Donuts latte. But I'll take either one in a pinch - both good and both worth the price.

    Enjoy your coffee!

....it would be interesting to know if any one else was taught to spell the word d-i-l-e-m-n-a.

Not where I came from. I was taught to spell it correctly right from the start. I was also taught to use correct grammar but I ain't too good with that all the time. :D

i won 500,000 british pounds sterling

Just got another interesting email - this time from Publisher's Clearing House, but it said I won $1,000,000 cash in their lottery. Same guy signed the letter.

Unbelievable, I'm not even going to respond to this one. I never registered with PCH for the lottery, and I know that is the only way you can win it.

Let's see now, I am worth almost two million dollars now, wonder if the bank will float me a loan on these two magnificent wins?

I posted yesterday that I test drove the new 2013 Lexus GS350, etc., and had to admit it was a great riding car - just extremely "techy" for most people.

Well, late this morning, I got a call from the GM of the dealership telling me he would "even trade" me for the car (trade my Mercedes E350) for the new GS350. So, he was giving me about $55,000 for my car and selling me the new car for $1500 under invoice (they have a conquest thing for $1500 this month). So, I said to myself - hmm - under invoice, exactly what I wanted for my car, and I get the Lexus.

So, I put Dad in the car and I drive down to Pembroke Pines Lexus to check this out as well as the car.

Everything was exactly as he stated - and I doublechecked everything, etc. So, I bought the darn thing. They got me a 60 month loan (not a 66 like I had before) at 2.69% interest with Lexus Financial. Comes with XM radio, traffic, data-link, weather and travel link (had Sirius transfer my balance to XM), Lexus Link (like MBrace with Mercedes - and Mbrace is sending me my 513.00 refund for unused amount), and that was that!

Medium Gray with a deep saddle interior. Has alert system for oncoming cars if I have my directional on (but didn't have lane departure warning), NAV, Mark Levinson 900 watt 17 speaker radio, uplink for my Iphone to download music, etc., bluetooth of course, and a ton of other stuff I have not yet discovered. Also has Lexus Link (stolen car telemetry service, emergency service, etc.).

    I know I'm crazy, but...

    lexus GS350

Probably not since I got the Lexus. I got the sport model - better than the standard model - more like the Benz and BMW. Definitely feel the road and the ride is definitely smoother thank the Benz, which was pretty stiff as you all can imagine.

    Chick-Fil-A

Ok, chicken strips or chicken breast sandwich is what I"ve gotten from my post. First, I'll try the strips and the next time I'll try the sandwich. Sounds like I'm in for some Chicken Licken Delights!

    Thanks all for your feedback.
