It says it comes with a Heads Up Display. It's like being in a jet fighter. I

That is one of my favorite features in my Buick. Love it, it even tells you what song is playing on the radio and/or your next maneuver when using navigation.

    One of my favorite...

Doesn't that distract you when driving? One minute you're using distance vision with your eyes and the next instant, you're using close-up vision to see the heads up readouts. I'll just keep it off - could be too dangerous to use, in my opinion.

To me, that would be the end of in car navigation (I'm too cheap anyway). I think it could be more dangerous to have to pull over to the side of the interstate. Especially if your passenger could be operating the NAV system while you keep driving.

I paid extra in my Camry to get the upgraded radio. It comes with more inputs and RDS (where it shows you the song information). Toyota, in their infinite wisdom, has decided that the RDS information cannot be viewed while the car is in motion. I was especially disappointed because that was one reason I specifically paid more for the radio. If I want to know what song is playing I have to pull over and stop. The Toyota satellite radio, iPod connection and CDs with song data show the song names while driving. The only thing you cannot see while driving is the radio station song information. Brilliant Toyota!

the icon disappears and won't let you select...

That only happens when you are traveling over 5 or so mph. But if you have "voice activation", you can select and enter destinations, call up Points of Interest, activate and cancel route guidance, change radio stations and access SAT, make a phone call using bluetooth, etc., all using voice control, even at 70 mph. But you cannot manually set route guidance or enter destinations when the car is moving.

That's been around for a number of years, since they introduced voice activation.

Anyone else with a 2012 is welcome to chime in too.

That is a silly rule and I am not sure the salesman is being completely truthful.
I do have to agree to something every time I drive by pressing the enter button....I think I am agreeing not to use the navigation system while driving.

I know my wife has used it while I am driving...I give instructions while she pushes the buttons. I have put in destinations on a quiet country road, so it definitely works while I am driving.

The Subie system might just be designed that way because that is the way they came up with a way to protect themselves in our litigious society.
The BMW system is to agree to their terms....I agree not to use the GPS while driving.

rear passengers can set their own temperatures and activate heated rear seats, change radio SAT, FM/AM stations

I am sure that you can turn that feature off if you want to. I can just imagine the driver listening to some nice classical music when the teens decide to listen to some rap music!

Not at all! It really is no different than looking down at the speedo. In my car the height is adjustable (with a rocker switch) I keep it down pretty low in my field of vision. I also keep it pretty dim, just bright enough to see during the day and then the car dims it at night for you.

Try it for a while, I would be surprised if you don't learn to love it.

    try it, you'll like it

Yes, I noticed a rocker switch and a dimmer rheostat that adjusts it up or down and brightens/dims the display. It also has an auto switch so that it uses ambient light to raise or lower intensity.

I don't drive much at night but it was definitely noticeable in daylight. I think that technology is becoming a distraction independent of it's utility, if you know what I mean. So much going on at the same time. And now, instead of a 7 or 8 inch screen, I'm dealing with a 12 inch split screen. Intense, to say the least.

    turn that feature off

There is probably some sub routine in another sub routine that allows you to turn off the rear seat functions, I just haven't found it yet.

As for using the owner's manuals, the main Manuel is 3" thick! I swear I've never had an owner's manual so intense - over 650 pages. Then, there's a NAV owner's manual that is 2" thick with thousans of voice commands - you use casual English now - so the commands have variants the computer understands. Then, there is a "Quick Reference Guide", only an inch thick, that one could use to "get started" so to speak. You can't fit the case with all the manuals in the glove box anymore. You Jane to put it in the trunk.

I did read a review of a car that had it and the reviewer preferred not to have it.

Personally, maybe I would get to like it, but I really prefer to have clear vision ahead, and I can look down to see the speedometer when I want to.

Having said that, maybe it would have saved me getting my speeding ticket!
My guess is it wouldn't, because I wouldn't have been looking at it anyway when I am trying to get around a truck that is weaving in the next lane.

Wow! By the time you finish reading that sucker it will be time to get another car. ;)

The manual in the 5er is also a printed manual, but it also comes up on the navigation screen - for quick reference. You have to have that feature.

I found out things a nice BMW`salesman showed me in Florida that I didn't know I had. If I put my foot under the rear bumper the trunk pops up (in case you are carrying things), and if I hold my finger on the door handles, the windows will all go down. I would never have known about these features if he hadn't shown me.

I am sure you won't know about half the things your car has by the time you trade it in. They should have classes to tell you how it all works.

I always thought that if there was a passenger sitting in the seat you should able to enter addresses on the NAV unit. I guess that would be too easy to defeat (jump the connector for the weight sensor under the seat).

You’re right that would be too easy and I would be the first one to jumper out the connector, too. Others that are less savvy would put a 100 pound Gorilla doll made up to look like a person in the passenger seat like people do when they want to use the HOV lanes that require at least 2 people in the car and only has the driver. So, they have thought this through and have made the Nav a worthless feature until you stop, if the guy at the dealer is right. :(

There are companies that sell black boxes to allow input while vehicle is it motion (it "tricks the system" taking the VSS out of the loop).

I didn’t know that such a box existed for doing that but I’m sure it would void your warranty for ANY car problem however unrelated it may be. So, until the car is out of warranty I wouldn’t want to do that. Hell, I couldn’t even get warranty work when I didn’t mess with the car so you know damn well I’m gun shy when it comes to manufactures and warranties.

If you know of a box that will allow the system to be bypassed let me know and I’ll look into it after the warranty is over.

BMW can be too smart for their own good.

stopped at the dealer saturday to look at an X3 onthe showroom floor. Wanted to check out the cargo area. But, the hatch was locked when I tried to pull the handle.

so, I find the button on the dash (down near the floor) that releases it, and push it. Nothing.

salesguy comes over all cocky, and he can't open it. Figures out the battery was dead.

so, because they have gone so hi-tech, when your battery dies, there apparently is no way to open the rear hatch. Plain silly.

I am not really a big fan of keyless entry, etc. and that is one of the reasons.

Honest, when I’m on the interstate I’ve met that criteria many times over. :confuse:

But you cannot manually set route guidance or enter destinations when the car is moving.

The Subie has voice actuation and when I went to the dealer about the Nav he mentioned voice actuation for the phone but he did not say anything about voice activation for the Nav system. I’ll be at Disney World starting this Thursday for a week with Son #1 and his three sons and when I get back I have already thought about going to the dealer for some voice actuation instructions because I tried what it said in the manual for the phone but I’m too dense to get it right.

It would be nice if they had classes on the systems on the Subie like you have on the Lexus. The car has plenty of stuff I will never use but voice actuation will have to be learned if I want to take advantage of what I paid for. When I got the Genny I vowed that I wouldn't talk to a car but it looks like Subaru will make me eat those words.

abacomike, Don't try to digest it all in one day. Much of it will make sense slowly. Mine had heated and A/C seats front and rear as well, but the rears only work when someone is sitting there. Same with the radio/CD controls. Back seat can't change what you have running in the front. Look closely, you'll see headphone jacks for the rear seat passengers. I'm surprised it didn't come with headphones. Mine did and got traded in still in the wrapper. HUD had me hesitant as well. Give it time. You'll wonder how you lived without it. Dave

I do have to agree to something every time I drive by pressing the enter button....I think I am agreeing not to use the navigation system while driving.

In the Genny as soon as the car is started I have to push the wheel down that is on the console to acknowledge the screen information telling me that I should be aware that using the Nav system can be dangerous while the car is moving. If I don’t do as instructed the display stays and you can’t get any visual information other than the warning. OK, I get that. On the Subie there isn’t a control wheel. The display is a touch screen but you have to touch the “agree” button to get out of the warning screen. However, Subie takes it one step further, once you rolling you’re done.

There has to be a way to do this but I haven’t figured it out yet. Like I said in a previous post I’m going to the dealer when I return from Disney World. If I can still walk.

    gorillas in the front seat

by the time I read the manual, I'll have a new car

Firstly, I was driving north on I-95 a few weeks ago, and from 7:00 - 9:00 AM, and 4:00 - 6:00 PM, there is an HOV lane (high occupancy vehicle for those of you living in rural areas) in the far left lane. It was about 8:00 AM and traffic was heavy. I enter the interstate and take my life into my hands trying to cross over to the HOV lane - Dad is with me, as always. As I'm trying to squeeze over, I see this Yukon to my left in the HOV lane and in the front passenger seat there is a mannequin sitting there looking forward. I almost rear ended a truck because I couldn't take my eyes off that mannequin - and it didn't even look like a live human being - more like a stiff separated from her coffin. Truly amazing.

As for reading the manual, you all have me pegged - but I know I'll never get through that manual. You really have to sit in your car as you read through it so you can put into practice what you are reading.

paid more for the upgraded radio

With the advent of HD radio, which I had in the Benz and also in the new GS350, it puts satellite radio sound quality to shame. It is so crisp and clear, it's like being in the recording studio at the time the CD was produced. Additionally, most HD FM stations are "multicast" meaning that on the same band (wider width) they broadcast 2 and sometimes 3 HD channels. With this MARK LEVINSON 7.1 surround sound (900 watts w/17 speakers), it alerts you to stations with multicast HD.

I must admit though that SAT radio quality is improving, but HD stations are so awesome, they even rival CD and DVD quality. The Levenson system also plays DVD video as well.

I love quality sound systems - wouldn't buy a car without a super system!

Now I have a dilemma (or, in the Canadian, dilemna).

I need a set of speakers for my laptop. I've been playing my iPod out of my wave radio but this is on the other side of the room and has loads more music. Hooking up the laptop to good sound will get me playing my guitar and doing all that good stuff for myself.

The problem. Used to be Harman Kardon had a lot of that reasonably. They seem to have gone on to other things. There's a nice Cambridge Soundworks that I have on my desktop at home but it's $150. My inner cheapskate is hounding me. Must decide. That or someone could buy them for me as a congratulations on your new bone marrow present.... I'll give you a shipping address....

Speaking of new bone marrow, tests are back and the donor's cells have completely taken over. Still so far smooth as silk.

Met a women who went through the same....

It's my belief that we all have our crosses to bear - and you are handling you're quite well, from what I gather.

I had back surgery back in 1980 and had to have several units of blood transfused because of blood loss. About 1995, as a result of a routine blood test, my liver enzymes were elevated. After more tests, they found I had hepatitis C acquired from that blood transfusion (they didn't screen blood for hep C until the late 80' and early 90's. They say I am just one o an estimated 10 million people who are infected by that virus. No cure, but I did try the interferon with ribivan or something spelled close to that, but the side affects were intolerable and the regimen was not as effective as they had hoped in reducing the viral count.

When I had my gallbladder out last month, they did some exploratory investigation of my liver since sorosis and eventual liver cancer is the terminal aspect of this disease. They told me that the biopsy was negative, but that the liver looked like a hep C liver.

Hope they can find a cure before this gets the best of me. So I can empathize with the anxiety associated with serious organic problems.

    Keep healing!

Hep C (or any hep) is a tough one.

I have gallons of transfused blood and seemingly without incident. When they were matching a donor for me they liked the guy we used because neither he nor I had been exposed to something called a CMV virus. They told me it was pretty amazing I hadn't been exposed because of all the transfusions I've had. It's a pretty common virus.

That is very good news. I knew if anyone could pull this off it would be you. Keep doing what you've been doing because it seems to be working for you.

If you find a little later on you have a craving for a "feel of the road BMW", I'd say you got a Canadian donor. :)

I think that technology is becoming a distraction independent of it's utility, if you know what I mean.

That technology has been around for a long time. At least as far back as ’94 for GM cars. Son #1 bought a ’94 Bonneville SSEI from a cousin of mine in ’97 and that Bonny had a heads-up display. About 2 years after he got it a stone broke the windshield. His comprehensive insurance paid all but the $150 deductible. Man, was he ever glad for that because even back then the cost was just under $1K. I don’t even want to guess what they want to replace one on a 2012 Lexus. So, they are nice until they break.

The quality of the sound I get when playing a CD or listening to XM or Pandora through the computer is awesome. Sound reproduction is is so close to "live" it is amazing. I have two pedestal speakers (tweeters and midrange) about 8" tall an 3 inches wide and one subwoofer that is about 8" x 10". Like I said, they were not that expensive - about $120 to $150 for the set from HP. Free shipping was included.

Or, when you are up to it, you and the Mrs, can come to Florida and you can fit in the back seat of the Lexus and try out the rear sound controls for the Mark Levenson system. I can tell you that no one will bother you back there because I can't remember the last te anyone ever sat in the tear of any car I've ever owned.

Yeah, I believe Pontiac was the first with it, and then Buick followed. I know my buddies early 90s Grand Prix GTP had it. As for the windshield, I don't believe it has anything to do with the HUD. In my car the entire works appears to be on the top of the dash with mirrors/lenses in it.

I agree the workings for the HUD are not in the windshield but to make the display as crisp as it is, the glass is not your run of the mill windshield glass. The glass has finite reflective properties that make it work as designed. Years ago I remember a guy at work who had a car that was getting old enough that he dropped his comprehensive insurance that would cover windshield replacement. So when his windshield broke and he was going to have all of the cost come out of his pocket, he decided to go with the standard glass windshield and not pay the outrageous price for the HUD. He said the display was nowhere near what he had originally. Since it was a car around 10 years old he was not all that upset about it but he didn’t think it would be that bad.

technology has been around for years

Just took a long drive and put the heads up display on, but this time I adjusted the projection down so it was jus above the hood of the car and...definitely works nicely and was not a distraction. I had the projection set too high, but when I found the "up/down" I was able to bring it down enough so it no longer is a distraction.

Shows RPM, speed and when I learn more about it, I'll use it all the time.

Thanks, J. I had no idea. If anything happens to my windshield, I will be sure to check that the proper unit is installed.

Yes, that is exactly how I have it. If you have it too high, it is right in your field of vision.

I get a laugh out of Lexus putting RPM. Why a Lexus needs a tach is beyond me, and probably some large % of the owners don't even know what it means, and the overwhelming majority could not care less about revs.

It's like a kitchen remodel (or new dining room furniture). What was perfect when you bought the new house, might need updating at some future point in time...

That sounds like it’s coming from a guy who has undergone a successful reprogramming. :P

That’s how they get their hooks in you. Now just don’t break the windshield.

You're welcome. That’s the least I can do for a poster buddy.

I guess you thought I was just another pretty face in here, huh?
