The FJs had trouble with the frames and body parts cracking in early versions. IIRC at the time that was due to reasonably normal use for a vehicle that tried to emit the image of a tougher off-road vehicle. You'd mentioned using it to tour the farm...

not sure if your friend is an adventure seeker, or just not very bright.

I believe he is fairly bright, but he likes to discover the world around him. He buys a $20 bicycle and rides it all over Europe and other places like Afghanistan or Iran, and then he leaves it there. His last two cars are about a 1980 Taurus, and before that he had a 73 Malibu.

He has a good job and makes a decent salary. He was married once but it didn't last long. He wanted to buy a Mustang (about 1970) and his fiance wanted him to buy the more practical family Nova. He says the salesman was a sleazy guy who talk the whole time to his fiance to say how foolish it would be to buy a Mustang.

He didn't want to buy the Nova, but he did for his fiance. When it rained the trunk in the Nova would fill up with water. He complained to the salesman. The salesman put his arm over my friends shoulder and said, "Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, why worry about a little bit of water, it doesn't rain that often"?.

Jimmy was divorced within a year, and he hasn't bought a new car ever since - and he never got remarried. I guess he really holds a grudge.

    And you talk about ME?!

Don’t take it personal. I talk about everybody. It’s sorta a self defense thing I pick up at one of those company courses that I was sent to years ago. It was how some people deflect blame to others so that they have time to formulate how they will solve the problem when it finally gets back to them and of course take the credit for being the hero. The course was to make people aware of how some people operate in the work force. I never did that but since they put the idea in my head I figured what the heck. ;) I’m sure this is no surprise to someone like you and Mike who were in a position of having to sort through things like that.

    Like I said, nothing personal.

This is definitely is a crazy storm. CT governor Malloy CLOSED all public highways to non-emergency vehicles as of 1:00 pm. Since my BMW does not qualify as an emergency vehicle, I left work at 11:45 pm. I made it home around 12:20 pm. Waiting for the storm to come.

We in central CT are waiting too. Same thing here, highways closed to trucks @11, all traffic @1.
I backed the Explorer into the garage so I can load up the generator in case we lose power and get a lot of rain.
My mother has a sump pump, but no backup. I tried to talk her into getting one after last October, but no dice.
I guess we are lucky the cold front went south, so we aren't getting high winds and snow.
Saw a strange sight getting onto the highway. A cruiser was blocking the way, then a fleet of cruisers around what seemed like a group of random cars, drove by and I was able fall in line behind the group. The group of cars included a Camry and a Chryco minivan. A couple of the vehicles had Delaware plates.
It sounds like the mid atlantic is getting hit pretty hard right now.

This sounds like it could be BAD! So often in the past, the dire forecasts have turned into nothing. A tempest in a teapot.

I hope people don't assume that will be the case this time around.

Hang in there guys and be careful!

I will save all of you, and my account, from a play-by-play of the honeymoon! Haha. We did end up doing a little bit of touring around when it wasn't raining - shopping, the lighthouse, etc. We also spent some time at the Spa and did a beachfront sunset dinner as well.

As far as the weather, having lived in Pittsburgh (and now Seattle), I am all to familiar with the rain. Did not bother me, since it was still warm, but I do regret not being able to do the sunset snorkel that we wanted to do.

Hope everyone is doing OK with the Hurricane. Spoke to my Dad about an hour ago and he said things were definitely starting to get dicey in the Philly Metro Area.

Things got really windy & rainy here about 5:00 pm just as they reported. Power is still on here, but my best friend lost power about 15 minutes north of me lost power around 1:00 pm. Cable & phones are out. A rather large tree fell on my house about 1/2 hour ago. No damage, thank god. But it was LOUD!

Hey I have a question for mike and sandy down in Florida. Up here it's obvious that the best time to buy a convertible is fall and the best time to sell one is spring. I'm not clear on when would be the best time to buy a vert down there. When would you get the best price?

Here about the same. Southwest Virginia still has power. Light drizzle with winds from every direction at 28 MPH last time I looked. Expected to gust to 60 MPH overnight. DirecTV sent me an email that they're dedicating channel 325 to the storm. Broadcasts from Long Island, Belmar, NJ, NYC, etc. It was different hearing NY accents for long periods. Hope everyone gets thru it OK.

It's probably the reverse down here. No one drives convertibles in the summer down here with the top down so the best time to buy one would be spring - late May in my opinion - and the best time to sell one would be late October when it starts to get cooler.

You have to remember that our summers are brutal when considering UV rays and damage to skin tissues. Convertibles are more numerous in the auto rental business down here - National, Hertz, Alamo, Avis, etc.

When I was in the business, I tried to wholesale convertibles because they are generally difficult to sell - skin cancer fears, etc. Dermatologists are the busiest practices down here followed by cardiologists. I've had a few bouts with basal cell carcinomas (mild form of skin cancer but if left untreated it can become melanomas) and that is why I stay out of the sun. Only tourists sun bathe nowadays.

I hope I answered your question.

I've been following the storm - stay safe EVERYONE!!!

gg - what's the weather like there in the Queen City? From the maps I've been seeing, it looks like the rain bands come all the way west to where you are.

I've been talking to co-workers in Toronto and they tell me the storm is supposed to hit there today or tomorrow. Same warnings - stock up on water and canned food and prepare for power outages.

Hope all is well ... would love to hear from our NJ / NY / CT contingent soon (if possible).

It hit last night in Toronto. Winds were 60 mph, 30K homes without electricity, lots of downed trees etc. One lady killed when a Staples sign blew away and hit her.

Not as bad as it could have been, but bad enough. Winds are still strong today, gusts to 40 mph, and light rain off and on. At least the worst is over.

Hope everyone else came out of it ok.

They named a ship after fezo?

Yeah they did. But it was such a problematic ship they finally took it out of service and sunk it. IIRC it posed a problem there too. It wouldn’t go down with the first few hits (a lot like our ‘fez’). They had to work on that thing for hours and hours. Kinda like Edmunds trying to get rid of him with dues increases then giving up and giving him some well deserved distinction as a recognized old time contributing poster.

‘fez’…that thing was almost as tough as you. They named it right. Hope all is well health wise and with Sandy.

Hope all is well in your area by now and with our other poster buddies up your way. Other than some very heavy rain and some wind gusts last night, the Pittsburgh area is OK. No power outages that I’ve heard about. Son #2 told his mother that he got a few drops of water in the family room. He blamed that on not cleaning out his gutters. I told him to do that last week. :(

Thanks for the research on the FJs. I noticed that the complaints covered the years from 2007-2009, with many issues regarding the paint chipping. I wonder if Toyota made any corrections during the last three years. I also noticed that customer service was a major issue with those complaints. They sounded similar to Jmonroe's experience. Yes, Jeep may be a better alternative.

    "Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy..."

I'm definitely a non-violent person, but I hate to think what I might have done if a car saleman put his arm over my shoulder and said that to me. What a patronizing, crude, insufferable s.o.b. that guy was!

As for your friend, he's searching for something that he will never find. It's sad. I've traveled in Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. You don't do that for adventure, especially in these uncertain global times. A business trip is one thing, but riding a bicycle across those countries is quite another---even in peaceful times. Your friend appears to have some major issues, one of which may be self-destruction.

    "Don't take it personal."

I didn't. I was really being funny with the response. I'm ashamed of myself for not recognizing one of my own workshop components. I teach a course for industry on dealing with difficult personalities. In fact, I'm doing one in January, along with dealing with change and building a power team. Three industries called the college and wanted a "return to basics" training. It appears that so much time has been spent with technology and production levels, that the employees got lost in the shuffle. They've also had lots of management changes, downsizing, etc. We'll see how it goes. I had to laugh. I told the college that I was getting too old to do these things, and that they needed a young, fresh approach. The response? Industry officials requested "a more mature instructor" with experience in the basics. I guess there is still a need for some of us old fools. :D

Hope we hear from fezo soon. NJ got it pretty bad. It's been a strange storm. We got rougher winds after it passed us and headed north. It finally rained here a little last night. What were you doing in those places. I'll tell you, if you see this movie Argo you will not go those countries, the people (I should say men, because it seems the women don't exist) are maniacs.

You have a good handle on people. I think my friend is very eccentric....he likes to tell people about his adventures. I think he wants to see and experience the world as much as possible. He also likes to be interesting, and have great stories to tell.

I like normal people, a nice comfortable bed, a TV and radio nearby, a nice bathroom and all the creature comforts, and no extra maniacs around...my neighbor who cut down 30 foot trees is bad enough.

. I teach a course for industry on dealing with difficult personalities

Are you implying JMonroe should take your course?

Actually, that sounds like a very worthwhile course in this day and age. You remember we had that emplyee problem a few years ago and we had to let our saleslady go because she verbally abused our IT guy, who wouldn't hurt a flee.

Now, another one doesn't get along with him, and I know it can't be his fault. Yet, the woman is a good worker who is usually pleasant and easy to get along with.

It shouldn't be a big deal, getting along is fairly easy, yet people just can't do it. So, that course sounds very worthwhile.

Hi Michaell....yeah....it's rainy here in SW OH. But, nothing like the pics I've seen from NY, CT, WVA, Eastern FLA, etc.

Actually, there's nothing really that unusual for a Fall day around here. It's cool (40-50 degrees) and rainy. It normally doesn't get this cool/cold this soon (usually around Thanksgiving is when this type of weather hits us). But, this is certainly not unusual.

I was supposed to be in Boston yesterday and NYC today for business. Cancelled that last Friday, feeling like a wimp, given I could have flown out Saturday and made it. Looks like I made the right call.

When I lived in Palm Desert, I had a place right on the San Andreas Fault but the earthquakes I lived through (Landers quake - 7.6; Big Bear quake - 7.2) were not part of that fault. Then I moved to Chatsworth (north L.A. In the San Fernando Valley) and lived through the Northridge Quake - 6.8.

With the Landers and Big Bear quakes, we had aftershocks of 6.2, 5.8, 5.5, etc., for several years. Definitely not something I would recommend for the faint of heart! When the ground you are standing on feels like you are walking on "jello", you definitely want to get away as soon as you can!

Good to hear everyone is safe and sound. Living through hurricanes is no fun either - I've lived through 4 of them. Definitely worse than a quake!!!

Nyccarguy, you have a good idea. I might look at that Jeep Wrangler. I don't know why I hadn't thought about it. I owned a Jeep back in '96. I have always liked them.

My wife and I absolutely love my 1999 Wrangler Sahara; we don't ever plan to sell it. It still looks new and is surprisingly comfortable to ride in(the Bilstein HD shocks I fitted have something to do with that, methinks). The new JKs with the Pentastar V6 are tempting, but the TJ is all we really need.

Yeah…yeah, I’ve heard that before about those persnickety mini pure breds. The larger pure breds just go about their day to day living without worrying about how they were bred. If need be they’ll have a snack of one of the mini things when annoyed enough.

Years ago I almost saw that happen while at the vets with my pure bred English Springer Spaniel who was there for his annual checkup. Let me explain, the kids wanted a German Shepherd but compromised with their mother on the size of the dog because she didn’t think it was fair for her to have one of those cute lap dogs (are they really dogs?) given the boys were almost teenagers at the time. I’ll continue, this little noise maker was just yapping away at every dog and cat in the waiting area. This one large Shepherd just kept looking at this winey little thing and finally put his head down and ignored it altogether. The woman took her noise maker off of the leash because she didn’t want the poor little fool to hurt itself tugging away on it. She said she was going to hold her on her lap and try to calm her down. It worked for a little bit then when she wasn’t paying attention the fool thing jumped off her lap, ran across the room, and then jumped onto the back of the Shepherd that was taking a nap. Well, needless to say all hell broke loose in that waiting room. It was hard to tell who was screaming the loudest, her little fool or her.

Yep, I almost saw lunch being served in the waiting room that day.

    lol picturing that happening!

Gigi barks about twice a year, and maybe twice a month when having a dream.

She isn't persnickety...the burglar alarm went off, the burglar opened the sliding patio and fled, the alarm company phoned, my wife and I couldn't get back to sleep, Gigi slept through the whole thing.

There was wind, there was rain, and there were a couple of short power interruptions.
    We got pretty lucky.
My mom and my uncle, who is visiting from Germany, were even able to come over for dinner and return during lulls in the storm.
My sister, who lives in PA about 100 miles from the Ohio border, emailed and said if thing got bad we could head out there(375 miles away).
She must have checked the weather after that, because another email followed that said 'maybe you should stay where you are'.
My oldest daughter's boyfriend sent my wife an email from Cleveland, asking if we were ok.
An hour later he emailed that they had no power!
Plenty of people here in CT don't have power, either.
I'm lending my generator to a friend at work who has a couple of elementary school age kids.
He has no estimate from the power company about when it might return.

    That was a huge storm.

they are supposed to be scrapped, but traditionally, many got "washed" a second time (well, the title at least) in a southern state.

I know that after katrina, they started a database of flood totals where the VINs got entered to try and counter that.

though frankly, after being submerged, some of those cabs might smell better...

What do they do with cars that get waterlogged?

They are dried and refurbished. Then, they are usually shipped to Africa or South America and sold as used vehicles. Or, they salvage what they can for parts if they cannot be refurbished and the rest is junked.

The reason they are not sold in the U.S. is because most states have laws about divulging if a car was involved in a flood or accident. No such laws in Africa or South/Central America.
