The only solution is to impound the car and take the keys

I was very lucky - my dad was the one that said to me he really shouldn't be driving any more, so it was easy with him. He had a 2007 Infiniti M35, which he loved, and which I sold to Car Max for $37,000, it only had 7200 miles on it and was a year old. But that was when my "caretaker" duties started in earnest. I retired to take care of him so he had someone to drive him to doctors, banks, lawyers, shopping, etc.

Now, I take him walking every day which I am sure has kept him more agile. At 90 to walk a mile a day or more at a fairly fast pace is a true miracle. It keeps his blood flowing and his muscles toned.

When Dad finally passes on, I will have to get a dog to walk every day since I am so used to walking every day. LOL!!! That was funny, after I read what I just wrote - so instead of a dog to walk every day, I have Dad! I know that sounds awful, but I started laughing so hard after rereading my post before posting it, I had to relate it to all of you.

I am sure this woman has family, but I am not going to have any contact with her at all.

I called my dealership and the told me not to worry about it. Just bring the car back and they will give me another - they will cover the cost since it was a no fault accident with someone who had no insurance - and they supposedly have coverage for that.

So, I drove up there and have another loaner - another C250.

Since you do not express your inner feelings openly, your mind came to your rescue. When the sand came pouring out, you received some stress relief in order to better deal with a problem(s) in reality.

Hmm, sounds interesting. Your description of my not expressing my inner feelings is a good characterization of my personality. And yes, I've been going through some stressful moments lately that has led to some episodes of anxiety.

Thanks Richard for the observation. By comparison my doctor was quick to offer a pill instead of trying understand the cause of my stress.

Pills are good!!! Let's all move to Colorado, buy a nice ranch overlooking the Rockies, chairs outside on the porch, and tons of weed to help the days go by contentedly and the stress goes away with each puff!!!

    I woke up exhausted.

But she kept coming and took out my left rear end!

Unbelievable, and so unfair you have to end up paying for the damage. I think I would try small claims court just as a matter of principle...this woman should not even be allowed to own a car.

One good thing, it wasn't the rear fender of your E350. Wonder what the dealership will think.

At least they could have given you an E350 this time, if they were a really good dealer.

Actually, it was really nice of them to be so understanding and to rectify the situation so quickly and easily....if I buy a Mercedes in the Miami area I will definitely get their name and number,....that is service above and beyond.

What a great interpretation of the dream. I know dreams usually mean something, but that sounds right on, and, indeed, it must be because he agreed with it.

I am going to write down my next dream and have you interpret it for me....if it is printable.

I have $1000 deductible on my collision, so I am going to have to come up with the $1000 - unless I take her to court and sue her - which would be a waste of my money since she has no money and would cost more for the lawyer than I could get from her.

Three words: Small Claims Court. She has to have some assets and you can attach them/file a lien against them. Or hire an attorney to collect the judgement- most charge only 25%, so at worst you'd be out $250.
Or do what I did- when the Mullet Moron rear-ended my wife's 5 Series(in an adjoining county) I filed a criminal complaint against him for no insurance. He had to cough up my $500 deductible for restitution in order to stay out of the joint.

One thing I've read is that each tire manufacturer has it's own treadwear rating method and that you can't compare one manufacturer's numbers to another.
You can check the treadwear guarantee to give you a good idea how long the tires should last.
Ultra performance tires don't usually have any treadwear guarantee.

Mike, you have a wonderful sense of humor. I am guessing you dad does also, and that is probably one reason he has lived so long.

Getting a dog is a good idea for you. Our little dog Daisy, makes me take her out for a short walk about every two hours during the day if I am at home. This is not always to do her business, but just to get out, get some air and snoop around a bit...and it is great exercise for me.

In the meantime, and until you can get a real dog, one of those shock collars might be a good idea if your dad has any obedience problems. :)

Saw this car in the Tampa Bat Times...perfect for Richard or Old Farmer.
    Grand Marquis...2006....4600 miles.
Only drawback is the price $11,981......but it is like almost getting a new car for $12000.

    "...she was wearing an eyepatch..."

Maybe she was a pirate trying to board your vessel. Are there many of them down there? I may have to rethink moving. :(

Seriously, maybe you should sue her for the $1000 and if she can't come up with the dough have the sheriff seize her car. Even if you can't get the $1k by selling it you at least would do the community a favor by getting her off the road.

Well, my Dad's sense of humor isn't as good as it used to be. I can tell him a joke or a funny story or situation but by the time I get to the punch line or end of the story, he forgets everything that came before - so I don't get the laughs I used to get. On top of that, his hearing is so bad (even with top-notch hearing aids), he doesn't hear most of what I tell him.

Frequently the neighbors complain to me about the volume on his television. I bought him these headphones that he can plug right into the TV, but he says if he puts them on, he can't hear if I call him or if someone is at the door. I tell him that if the doorbell rings, I can hear it and if I want him, I always go into his room since I know he can't hear me from another room, but he refuses to wear the headphones. What can I say - I do my best but it's usually not enough for him.

I dread the 5 hour ride to my brother's house on Wednesday. He's already told me he wants to leave early Friday morning. I told him that if he wants to stay only 2 nights, I'll send him home on a plane. He says that's fine!

Believe me, life is no picnic these last few years and only getting worse!

    "...I was a muffler..."

Ha ha ha! That's a good one! :) I'm sure I've heard it before but it's still funny.

    Switching gears.

I was surfing Autotrader for my low mile older bargains with the search set for "any distance" so I got the whole country. One thing I noticed was how dealers in different parts of the country put wildly different prices on essentially the same car. In one case one dealer was asking twice what the next one was asking. Another dealer was asking the same price for a car with 150k miles as another was asking for the same model with only 39k miles. One had a nice low miler but was asking more than twice what the NADA site (that his ad provided a link to) said it was worth.

This made me wonder how a dealer actually sets a price for a used car on his lot. Do the book guides enter into it at all or do dealer's just swing for the fence hoping that there that one customer out there who would pay twice book value for that particular car? I know condition is important in valuations but all these cars looked pretty similar.

FWIW, the car I was searching was old 90s Cougars which most people would not consider an in-demand vehicle.

Just what I'm looking for except it's a about 10x what I'd like to pay.

Craigslist in Tampa has about 1000 entries for GMs. They were very popular down there. I could see myself in a nice low milage 2000 GM for maybe $3k since they were essentially the same car for the last decade they were made.

Your kind words are much appreciated, NYC, but believe me it is difficult, at times. What hurts the most is that when you see your Dad's deterioration day in and day out, it is tough to face each day wondering if he'll even remember my name or where we live. I can't help comparing where he is today and where he was just 6 months ago. Dementia is very difficult to understand and predict. We've tried pills the doctor prescribed, but they were no help. His memory of numerical data is excellent - like his account numbers, balances in accounts, telephone numbers and even his Army serial number from 70 years ago, but he doesn't remember conversations or experiences in the short term or medium term. He forgets conversations we had 2 hours ago. Very frustrating. And I can't leave him alone for more than a few hours. He's beginning to lose his balance.

The doctors say he is strong and healthy except for his eyes, his hearing and his memory.

Tough not to be able to have some semblance of independence on my part.

Spoke with the Service Director this morning - he said the parts won't arrive until tomorrow from Orlando - 6 injectors and he also ordered 2 fuel pumps which the shop foreman said should be replaced as well. One fuel pump is the ultra high pressure one and the other is a "slave" pump from what he told me. The shop foreman indicated to him that when you have to replace all 6 injectors, it's also wise to replace the fuel pumps too in order to make sure the new injectors are getting correct pressured fuel.

When the parts arrive tomorrow morning, the shop foreman is actually going to work with the technician until the car is ready, which he expects will be tomorrow, late afternoon. He also told me if they can't get it done by then, they want me to come up early Wednesday morning and swap loaners - he said they just got in 8 new GLK350's which they just added to the loaner fleet. He said I would be more comfortable in one of those than even his E350.

Let's hope they get my car back to me soon - as you all know, it's like losing your wife or your girlfriend - you just can't manage well without them!

HBO had a new movie on this weekend called "Safe House" starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington. It's about CIA operatives, etc. If you like to see 100 guys get killed in about 1 hour 50 minutes, not to mention those seriously wounded, you must see this one.

Anyone else see that movie - it was truly nonstop action and AK47/9mm Glock shoot-em-ups!

My FIL was a great guy, but his taste in automobiles was abysmal- Park Avenues with cloth "cabriolet" roofs and gold trim. We were visiting him once, and my wife took our car to go have lunch with some friends. I wound up having to borrow one of his sleds to go pick up some trim parts from the BMW dealer. I parked it over a block away so I wouldn't be seen driving it onto the lot...

We went thru the same things with my FIL a few years ago. He lived with us for about 6 months until my poor wife just could not take it any more. We finally had to put him in a rest home.

He was there for 2 years until he passed. We visited every day, sometimes more than once a day but the more we tried to do for him the more hostile he became. Nearly all the hostility was directed toward my wife, so I became his main caretaker. They tell me that is typical. About all you can do is hang in there and do the best you can.

I give you a lot of credit Mike, that isn't easy. I will say this, retirement homes aren't too bad, where the people have some independence, but my wife and I have each had one parent go to a nursing home, and that is just a fast spiral downward.

They seem to load the patient up with drugs to make them docile and so they will sleep most of the day away. It's depressing when you see people just sitting there in these places. My wife and I have a pact, that if one of us ends up in one, we slip the other one a bottle of sleeping pills.

btw...we also have another pact....we won't give the other one a surprise party.

That's interesting. My MIL just turned 100 and she just went into a nursing home one year ago, until then she lived in a 2 story house. She was totally independent and went to the gym 3 times a week, cut the lawn, shovelled snow etc.

In the last few months this very mild easy going woman fights with the attendants, has set off alarms when she has tried to escape a few times now, tells the staff off! The children who live nearby get calls all the time to come over and help, they can't control her.

" Gentlemen of a certain age"

Oh, I know. Last week I followed behind a guy like that only this car was (probably still is) a Cadillac.

    He had it all!

An aftermarket ridiculous looking padded vinyl top, ugly Vogue tires, phony trunk straps, hideous looking thick gold wheel lip mouldings and an added on
continental kit! This old man was styling!

I didn't know whether to laugh or vomit!

And, I'm sure he had 5000.00 in these "improvements" that would probably result in a 5000.00 deduction if he were to trade it in!

And I'm sure he paid extra for a "full sized spare" Old men REALLY care BIG TIME about those!

My stepdad went downhill so quickly I couldn't believe it.

He was living in an assisted living facility where he was doing quite nicely for
three or four years. Then he got so bad they basically threw him out! He was never mean or hostile but he deteriorated physically and mentally.

One day, he pulled a fire alarm. That REALLY got their attention! He got scolded by both the staff and by the firemen that responded.

When I asked him what possessed him to do that, he told me..

" It seemed like the thing to do at the time"

We had to put him in a lockdown facility at almost 7000.00 a month. He only lived another two months and died in his sleep at age 90.

This is the same guy that would ride his bicycle three miles to the beach, lock
it up and go body surfing and ride three miles home uphill at age 77.

A nasty crash at age 83 broke several bones and I had to take away the keys to his bicycle. To this day, I believe that "event" was the beginning of the end.

It was no fun to watch.

I've made it clear that if anyone should try to throw me a surprise party, the only people who will be surprised are the guests, when I turn around and walk out. I don't like big surprises in general - just the small ones, like finding that the dishwasher has been unloaded by hands that aren't mine. Anything much bigger won't go over well!

    Analyze this

Last night I had another car related dream but this one involved President Barack Obama. The circumstances of how we met are vague. But while we having a conversation at an outdoor Plaza we were rudely interrupted by a driver who drove right through the water fountains and up some stairs almost running of the children playing in the fountain.

Obama reacted swiftly and chased after the driver but the driver got away in his Honda Civic. And here is the twist. Obama was a uniformed policeman patrolling plaza on a hot summer day.

Richard, or anyone; can you analyze this dream? Key words: Obama, Car, Policeman.

When I look at a car I only care if it looks good to ME. If I like a particular style but everyone else hates it, I find that to be a positive thing. When I go to negotiate that gives me a bargaining tool: "Gee, I like the car but those wheel moldings....I mean.....REALLY?". That's good for a $500 discount right there. :shades:

Richard, or anyone; can you analyze this dream? Key words: Obama, Car, Policeman.

Obama has to do with health insurance and the fact that Heath insurance premiums are going up $2500+ each year.

Car has to do with the car you can't buy next year thanks to the increase in insurance premiums and the fact that employers can no longer afford to provide health insurance for their employees.

Policeman has to do with the fact that the police are after you for robbing a bank to get enough money to buy that new car next year and to pay the increased monthly premiums for your family's health insurance.

See how simple it is to analyze dreams, *bwia?

"By comparison my doctor was quick to offer a pill instead of trying to understand the cause of my stress."

I'm afraid that is more the norm than the exception. Naturally, pills are necessary at times for different reasons, but they shouldn't be used to mask the real problem. Often times, you need an objective sounding board just to listen. If you have a friend or family member in whom you have real trust, that is a major help. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with paying a few dollars to have a psychologist hear you out. People are so quick to take care of medical issues but wouldn't think of taking care of an emotional problem. Illness and pain both come in a variety of areas. A good cry or a good talk never hurts. It's not healthy for body or mind to keep things bottled up inside. There are times when a dream or a nightmare can be a signal to seek help. Also, some physical signs can be a signal that emotional help is needed. A panic attack or an anxiety attack can bring on real physical symtoms---not being able to breathe, having chest pains, high blood pressure, etc. Some stress is normal and can even be of benefit, as in motivating you to take action. Long term stress and anxiety needs to be addressed before the results become harmful. Good luck with your problems and try to open up a little more. If anyone has a problem with how you express your feelings, then you probably don't need them around you in the first place.

Oldfarmer: I realize that many people chalk dreams up to "hog wash". The dreams that you are referring to are natural for all of us. The "water dreams" do often send a signal that we need to go to the bathroom. That being said, is it not possible that dreams can mean other things related to our lives? (No answer is required.) Fortunately, in recent years, many people have been helped by the interpretation of their dreams. Many studies and research models have been conducted which indicate the importance of dream interpretation. Many people have been able to rid themselves of childhood memories which, while hidden away in the subconscious, were causing problems in their adult lives. I'm not saying that every dream has a profound message for the dreamer. I'm just saying that we should keep an open mind and think about our dreams in terms of how they may help us both emotionally and physically. We shouldn't always read too much into what our dreams mean, but if we are having problems in life, perhaps it doesn't hurt to think about them. As a former psychology teacher, I always encouraged my students to listen to their minds and bodies. We are all encased in a wonderful, magical instrument. It should always be studied and used as a tool to help us in this life.

"...I filed a criminal complaint against him for no insurance."

Thanks for that advice. I never thought about being able to do that. Small Claims Court is also a good idea.

That's a really nice GM, a little high in price but still a nice car. I still love those cars.

"I had a dream last night that I was in a big fancy house with a dozen bathrooms but no toilets. Guess what I had to do when I woke up?"

That one is easy. You didn't have to go to the bathroom. It simply means that you are too cheap to buy a new car. :P

Mike, my heart does go out to you. My father became a vegetable after brain surgery. For two years I watched him lay in a nursing facility. It broke my heart every day that I went to see him. My mother sat by his bedside every day until I worried that she would deteriorate herself. Later, Mom suffered dementia and my wife took a leave of absence for a year to care for her at home. The strain on my wife was awful. We finally put her in a home. We went over every day before work and every day after work. We brought her to our house each weekend. This lasted another year until she passed away. What a way to end life. When I hear of elderly people who commit suicide, I have a full and complete understanding of why they do it.

Can your brother keep your father for a couple of days each month? Probably not practical. You need some "Mike time". Try to be good to yourself. I'm praying for you.

No, they need your dues money too badly in these hard times. I would love to see a picture of it myself.

Mike, I do love that interpretation of his dream!! Believe me. Bwia doesn't want me to analyze that particular dream. I would be ousted from Edmunds forever!
