Distracted Drivers Cause More Accidents than Drunk Drivers
Your right to live is more important than someone else using a cell phone to call, text or read email. Yet, there are only three states in the US and its territories which do not have a single cell phone while driving law on the books: Florida, Montana and South Dakota. State accidents reports note that distracted drivers cause more accidents than drunk drivers. Florida
The Florida DMV states the number one cause of accidents is distracted driving. Yet, there are no laws on it in the state. Thirty other states have distracted driving laws. To get a handle on why Florida has such a shocking record of distracted driving accidents, take a look at the statistics below:
One in five adults texts while driving A driver who is texting is 6 times more likely to cause as an accident than a drunk driver.
***Same statistics in Canada, more accidents caused by distracted drivers than drunk drivers, and we have laws in every province except one.
In my opinion, texting while driving should be a FELONY!
Three strikes you're out and in PRISON for ten years!
Think that might deter usage?...Probably not!
Florida just passed a law that prohibits texting while driving - but the fines are insignificant - $60 for the first offense and $75 for the second offense.
I agree that something has to be done to stop this use of cell phones while drivin -PERIOD. I have Bluetooth and perhaps once a month I get a phone call while I am driving. I just press a button on the steering wheel and the call is answered by the car. I end the call the same way without having to take my eyes off the road. Why can't all cars have that option to accept and cancel calls by merely pressing one button on the steering wheel.
But texting is something totally different. It is distracting and dangerous!!!
I have the same thing with our 2013 CRV and I'll still pull over or call the person back even though it's legal to use a Bluetooth.
I personally think ALL cell phone usage should be banned. The driver can be absorbed in the content of the phone call and give that priority over DRIVING THE CAR!
to use a Bluetooth-enabled hands-free phone in a car implies that one would need to pull over to carry on a conversation with someone in the vehicle as well.
What are the stats on little old ladies driving their Oldsmobiles through the wall at Chik-Fil-A?
How about all the electronic gee-gaws like NAV systems that are just as bad. Maybe they should mandate that those things are inoperable when the car is in gear.

One expert jokingly suggested that to force people to drive safely we should strap explosives to car bumpers so that the least little accident would result in the death penalty. This he reasoned would make drivers EXTREMELY careful and reduce accidents to near zero.
Certainly, you would only ever have one accident in your lifetime.

They have shown talking to passengers while driving is not all that distracting. Since you are all moving forward you are experiencing what is happening outside the car. Even when talking on Bluetooth, you are as distracted as if you were holding a cell phone up to your ear. Your brain is concentrating on what is being said on the phone more than what is going on in front of you.
Just me, but texting and using hand held cell phones are extremely dangerous and fines should be in the $200 to $500 range. The jury is out on Bluetooth, but that should be monitored to see how that affects accident rates.
Another great way of making people drive carefully would be to remove all safety features protecting the driver (not passenger). Another way would be to place driver's cabin in front of the vehicle, unprotected by bumpers or other crash elements.
In fact, a really strong argument can be made that a lot of those features are driver-centric, creating forgiving nature of a vehicle, which made drivers much more careless, because they feel protected. I wonder what is percentage of accidents are out there when driver walks away, but passengers get killed.
There is evidence that hands free devices are not improving safety as much as hoped. As you mentioned, the main difference between conversation in a vehicle and on the phone is that the in the car person sees what's going on and even minute changes in their behavior could provide you cues something is wrong, also their conversation tempo may allow you to divide the attention properly - whereas the guy on the line has none of that, i.e. he will demand and absorb much more of driver's attention, irrespective whether the driver has the hand on the handset or steering wheel.
How about all the electronic gee-gaws like NAV systems that are just as bad.
And an article in Boston's Sunday Globe supports your assertion. The article titled, Your Brains on GPS, suggests that use of GPS chips away at our mental skills. They cited several studies that show how the GPS affects our natural ability to navigate. In short our brains get lazy making less and aware of our surroundings.

+1 on that. When I first started to deliver pizzas, I bought a TomTom and used it to get around town.
After a few months, I began to realize that TomTom (and I suspect other GPS units as well) would not provide 100% accurate directions, and that the map updates weren't always accurate.
So, I went cold turkey and took the GPS out of my car, and relied on printed maps to learn how to get to an address.
Now, several years later, I can look at a delivery ticket and know a majority of the time exactly where the street is in our town.
And, most GPS' will provide directions so that the destination address is always on the right side of the street.
What I'm seeing with the new drivers is that they spend 1-2 minutes in the car plugging in the destination and blindly following the instructions - "turn left in 500 feet" - rather than learning the street names.
The virtualization - and dumbing down - of America continues.
Blackberry wasn't "swamped" by the global leaders. Blackberry WAS the global leader and either didn't recognize, or refused to recognize what the industry was doing. Phone and email is ALL Blackberry wanted to develop. The industry was adding cameras, music, IM, etc to their devices. Blackberry ignored those trends and is now looking for someone to buy them....even after they announced what was supposed to be the best portable phone/computer in the industry.
IF they don't get a buyer, you'll see something akin to what happened to SAAB....lots of wrangling, but little in the way of Blackberry becoming a viable company, again.
The difference between Tesla and BMW, is Tesla is the "sexy" entry in the electric market (and from what I can tell, for good reason). BMW has fumbled around, stating diesel was the future fuel, then Hydrogen, now it's their electrics they're touting.
To get a glimpse of what the market thinks of BMW's electric strategy, take a look at their hybrid 3 series sales. Dealers are discounting the daylights out of them (with BMW's support).
Tesla is selling at MSRP.
BMW has to decide on a strategy and stick with it. That's something they seem a little lost with right now. Their cars are losing their sporty nature in each subsequent model year.
I'm not a GM apologist, but you have to give them credit. Their VOLT was a shot across the bow. They're pushing it, sticking with it, and is now planning to release their next "volt-ish" model as a Cadillac.
I predict in 10 years, GM will be selling 10X the "volt-ish" cars as they're selling now.
I predict Tesla will be wildly profitable in the next 10 years.
I predict that BMW will only sell a trickle of the electrics they're planning to bring out, and they'll be viewed as little more than an anomaly.
I predict that BMW will only sell a trickle of the electrics they're planning to bring out, and they'll be viewed as little more than an anomaly.
They (BMW) will have to do better than that to meet the new CAFE standards. Unless there is some new battery breakthrough, 500 mile range for example, the hybrid option appears to be the most pragmatic way forward.
Is that supposed to be impressive? Seems rather run-of-the-mill to me. Now, eat anything you can buy from Taco Bell while driving AND remain stain-free... THAT'S a REAL trick.

One other possibility is Tesla will partner with a large manufacturer looking to jump start their full electric technology. Tesla is already supplying Toyota with electric drivetrains for the RAV4, and the Tesla plant is former Toyota/GM. Might see further partnership there. Imagine if Lexus suddenly adopted Tesla drivetrains.
It's interesting to see the comparisons between the BMW I3 and Tesla Model S. I guess it's natural given the limited number of electric cars out there, but in my mind they're about as similar as a compact gas car, like a Mazda 3 is to a BMW M5. The I3 has 1/3 the battery capacity of even a base Tesla, 1/4 the capacity of the upper trim Model S, odd styling, significantly slower acceleration, different handling objectives, and a fraction of the interior passenger volume. Different cars for different buyers. I think the Volt is the best comparison for the I3, followed by the Leaf. It's a cross between the two.
Maybe the I8 will be a closer competitor. In a couple years Tesla will release a smaller sedan to take on the BMW 3, and next year they enter the premium SUV fray. No doubt the premiums should be creating new business plans for this reality.
Not only is Tesla selling at MSRP, they're increasing prices at a time when others are slashing them, and there's still a waiting list. The fact Tesla just turned in the best safety scores in the history of NHTSA crash testing will only further product demand. Good for them. Good for us.
I'm glad to see the main manufacturers jump into the fray. To date most attempts have been half-hearted to appease the government. Tesla is more than a terrific car, it represents what I see as a significant change in the industry culture, from sales, to usage, to maintenance. I'm hoping to see established manufacturers do more than just make a car, but rather look at how they can revolutionize a stale market like Tesla is doing. Innovate! I can't help but look back to when Apple introduced the first iPod and iTunes.
As a passenger I shut my mouth when I see the driver facing a challenging situation such as merging onto a busy freeway. I know the driver needs to focus 100% on his driving.
Texting while driving is downright criminal or it should be!

I agree wholeheartedly with your comment about a driver needing 100% attention to his/her traffic environment. What gets me upset is when you see these elderly drivers, while driving their cars, talking into their cell phones. That is downright scary!
Half of them have serious difficulty seeing what's on front of them, let alone doing 2 things at the same time - talking and driving. Younger drivers are just as scary since they are also not fully aware of their environment, yet talk and drive at the same time.
When I get a call on my Bluetooth phone system, the calling number shows up on my NAV screen. I usually don't take calls while driving, however if the call is from someone in my address book, the name will appear instead of the phone number. If it is one of my kids, a doctor's office or my Dad, I will press the call button on my steering wheel and tell them I will call them right back. As soon as I am able to pull over, I call them back using the recall button.
Why not, if you have automatic braking, lane departure warnings, etc. In another 10 years or so, perhaps a lot of cars will drive themselves so we can text or even surf the web without as much danger :-)
I was asking for opinions on the wisdom of taking a modern Mustang engine and putting it in a 90s T-bird since they both used the 4.6L V8? Well someone had similar thoughts:
