Many reasons, but primary among them is that there are few movies today that tell a story with words and acting

Those are the kind of movies I like the most too. Movies that rely on dialogue and real situations and real people. There have been several movies like that over the last few years. The Social Network was one of the best in the last few years...hope you saw that one.

Other good movies about real people and situations are Rush, Captain Philips and American Hustle. Just me, but I think true life is more fascinating that a made up fictional story.

"RUSH" is a great movie for anyone who like auto racing and "epic duels" between highly motivated competitors. It's based on real events, so there are no contrived endings, sentimental slop, etc.

not to mention the $20.00 or so bucks it costs for the ticket. And what about gas for the car to get to the theater.

Just another viewpoint Mike, but we enjoy going to a movie. We enjoy the chance of getting out and seeing a movie on the large screen. It is a nice thing to do on a rainy or cloudy day in Florida. Senior rates are $6 or $7, and we rarely buy food at the show....we take a granola bar or a bag of nuts in with us just in case we get hungry (hope none of the theatre managers sees that).

Some movies are really worthwhile, they make you think and see life in different ways. I wouldn't recommend the movie "Wolf of Wall Street" as it has a lot of very adult type scenes, but, it is all based on a true story and it is an incredible story of a guy who was making millions a year by conning people into buying penny stocks. It made me read more about Jordan Belfort, the person the movie was about. He has spent some time in prison, but, he wants to pay back the money people lost because of him. It truly was a fascinating story, and it enriched my life - I really learned about a very interesting person.

Not all movies have to impart knowledge. Some just have entertainment value, a good example is Now You See Me. That was at the theatre a few months ago....about 4 magicians who pull off the perfect crime. Very enjoyable and just pure escapism.

Best to keep your Hyundai if you aren't sure, it's running well and you still like it. In my case, I was more than ready to purchase something new and with a higher up seating position. I never got down to the Subaru store, it's next to the Hyundai, as I really wanted to test the Forrester but it wasn't meant to be. I also didn't get to the C5 or the Rav4, similar to my Tuscon, because all the pieces came together at the Hyundai store so I just said yes when they accepted my lowball offer. If they had refused it, I would've just moved on down the line to the Suby and Mazda stores and then eventually to the VW place. Like you, I was in no hurry and had no need to purchase right then...a great place to be at.
I feel Stick's pain here as he wants something but all the pieces of the puzzle aren't there yet. Seems like his boy is the one who needs a vehicle like now and his daughter just wants him to get into something cooler. Kids sometimes don't get the financial aspects of buying a vehicle and just want shiny and new. In his situation, he's doing the right thing by keeping the Volvo and eventually trading the TL. Just wish my wife and I could've done a double deal at Hyundai with me getting the Tuscon and her going for the Accent...bet we could've gotten a great dual deal but she was not ready to move yet...and still isn't. Hoping for a year from now...the last week of 2014 when the 2015's will be out already!

I can appreciate your preference to go out rather than watch at home. I probably would go out to a movie more often if I had someone to share the experience with. Unfortunately, I am handicapped because I am devoted to caring for my Dad. Since he is legally blind and even with hearing aids he doesn't hear well, I can't take him to a movie - and going alone isn't much fun.

Personally, I like the privacy of my own home to enjoy a good movie.

Last one I saw was "Lincoln" and found it throughly enjoyable...now, nothing I really want to see except the wife wants to go see the Meryl Streep one, so guess we're going to go. Stopped at the block party last night for a few minutes but I was exhausted from the 12 hour day so was in bed before midnight even with all the fireworks right outside our bedroom window.
Heard that after Friday we're going to be busy so am going to the courthouse in the morning to get all that legal stuff taken care of...we've missed the 2013 deadline so not going to rush things now. When we passed the Hertz store in West Palm last night, they had cars lined up already so I really thought we'd be working today but no call. Friday I think it'll be a long day but will be ready for it...wouldn't mind being super busy for a couple of weeks actually. Need some nice paychecks since this year didn't go as planned. Just hope I get one of those other part time gigs I applied to to go along with this current one.

    Happy 2014 all!!!

Excellent point Mike. One of the good things about going to a movie with someone is the shared experience. I get a lot more out of the movie when I can discuss it with my wife...or if I talk about a movie with a friend. I agree, I don't think I would go to a movie very often on my own.....it just wouldn't be the same.

That also applies to travelling I think. I know some people travel alone, but, I think that sharing the experience is what really makes it pleasurable.

I didn't realize your dad was legally blind, that makes going to a movie difficult. Would your father faollow a movie or TV show if they have a narrator describe the action? I like these old Perry Mason, Ironsides, Matlock shows but I get them on a channel that is made for blind OR hearing impaired people. It can be closed captioned for hearing impaired, but, they have a narrator describing the action for blind people.

I think the Access channel is only available in Canada, but it should really be available in the US too.

    I have a question. I wrote a reply to Mike and the message got lost. So, I rewrote it, so it may have been sent twice. When I wrote it the 2nd time I got a message that flashed and said;

"Your post will appear once it has been approved"

Is that something new, or did I say something that red flagged my posts?

I would agree with you....movies are enjoyable because it can be a shared experience. That's one reason I like a movie with some thought and has a degree of cleverness. I like discussing a movie with my wife afterwards....or discussing with friends socially.

I didn't realize your Dad was legally blind....I must have missed that. This may be too personal but I'll ask...no need to answer, how does a blind - hearing impaired person spend most waking hours?

I sometimes like to record and watch old Perry Mason, Ironsides, Matlock and Murder She Wrotes. We have a channel in Canada that carries those and it is for hearing impaired or blind people. We can have closed captioning, but, they also have a narrator who describes the action. That along with the dialogue makes it so that a blind person can follow the story....I found it quite ingenius. According to this article it may only be available in Canada, but, they should make it available in the USA.....I am sure many blind people would find it an enjoyable form of entertainment.

In 2005, his opthomologist discovered he had Macular Degeneration in both eyes - he was almost completely blind in one eye and they started giving him injections right into his retina to reverse the disease in the other eye, which did not work. I sold his car in 2008 (a 2007 Infiniti M35) back to my dealership because he could no longer drive.

A few months later, I quit my job and then began taking on more and more responsibilities of caring for him.

He has some peripheral vision in his right eye - so by using a magnifying glass - he can check his stocks and investments online - but it takes him a long time which helps pass the time. He also manages most of finances by use of that magnifying glass. He always asks me to check his work so if he made any mistakes - which happens frequently - I can correct them.

Lighthouse For The Blind gave him eyeglasses that are actually magnifying lenses that he can adjust. He uses them for watching TV, but he can't see much - he doesn't recognize faces.

So, he starts his day with me driving him to the mall and walking briskly indoors. It takes about 20-25 minutes to walk the entire mall. We usually go shopping several times a week after our walk. One day we go to Walmart, another day Penn Dutch (specialty grocery store where we buy our meats and Deli), etc.

We usually are home by noon when he makes his own lunch. The rest of the day, he usually watches/listens to his TV with those glasses. I cook dinner every night for both of us. Dad washes and dries the dishes. He then watches more TV and is in bed by 9:00 PM and asleep.

As for his hearing, even with hearing aids, I have to repeat myself often. And that is his life - day in and day out. Quite boring to me, but remember he is 91 years old. Because his memory is fading quickly (not Altzheimers - just plain old dimentia due to old age), it makes it quite difficult - but I manage with him as best as I can. He still does his own showering and hygiene. When and if he can no longer do that, I would have to get help or have him move into a care facility. But for the time being, I'm managing.

    Thanks for asking, driver.

Damn, you guys that don’t live in the Eastern time zone sure do get jobbed when it comes to things like this. I can understand live performances being shown in real time in all time zones but I thought something like a New Year’s event would have been shown delayed via tape. That’s the way I feel too. Cars tumbling end over end and the occupants get out and are able to out run the percussion of devastating bomb blasts is way too much for me to take seriously. If I’m going to watch a movie with scenes like that it has to be with cartoon characters that I remember as a kid. Which reminds me of the question my 7 year old grandson asked me about 2 weeks ago...“did they have Looney Tunes when you were little”? When I said yes they did, he said, “geez, Bugs Bunny is probably going to die before I’m a teenager”! :'(

I lived in New York until I graduated from NYU. I moved to Chicago and pursued my MA and PhD on fellowships and grants. So for 22 years I lived in the central time zone. They used to broadcast New Years Eve in Times Square live (10:00-11:00 PM CST) and then it was rerun on tape until midnight (11:00-12:00 PM CST). So yes it was a bit confusing.

The first thing I had to get used to when I moved to the CST zone was that local and national news was aired 1 hour earlier. All TV shows were aired 1 hour earlier as well. The tonight show was aired from 10:30 - 11:30 PM CST, so I was able to get to sleep earlier and was more well-rested when I awoke than when I lived in the EST zone.

But when I moved to California, it was the same as the EST zone because everything is delayed 3 hours.

Then, when I moved to Florida, I had to adjust to the RST zone (Retirement Standard Time)! In case you don't know the difference, down here the entire southeast coast of Florida closes at 9:00 PM and does not open again until 6:00 AM. These older retired people never know what time it is down here - all they know is that when it gets dark, it's time for dinner and then to bed.

Mike, again, one of these days we need to meet up for a coke or something. I work in West Palm now so go the opposite way but would love to meet up on a Sunday morning or some other time. We live literally about 10 minutes from each other...I am just west of the Hyundai dealer on 441 and Winston Park Blvd., a big reason why we bought several vehicles from dealers on 441, they are so close!
This next couple of weeks are going to be super busy but after mid January, we should meet up and meet each other in person...would love to see your new toy!!!

Reminds me of one time we were in rural Indiana and decided to go out for dinner around 7:30-8:00. The restaurant was closing up when we got there and we were told in no uncertain words that "decent people have eaten by now."

I went to college in New Orleans, Tulane, and loved central time zone because everything came on 1 hour earlier than what I was used to...news at 10 which was great. New Orleans is a wonderfully exciting city with loads to do, maybe not as exciting as New York City but I liked it just the same. Cafe Du Monde for the beignets and chocolate mile was the absolute best treat in the world! And Mardi Gras is an experience everyone should go through, same as riding the street car up St. Charles Avenue.

Hmmm, I remember MacDonald's opened up about 3 miles from where I used to live sometime in 1965 or 1966. I was 21 years old at that time - but you are right - when I was a young kid, no MacDonald's, but we did have White Castle (sliders) drive-ins. Love those hamburgers with those minced onions. That's where we all took our girlfriends after the movies or after ice-skating or roller skating. 10 cents for a hamburger and 10 cents for a coke. Of course you had to eat at least 6 of those mini-burgers to feel like you had eaten, but that was our hang-out.

I like the sound of that.
When we first started coming down to Florida I wondered about the wisdom of living in a 55+ condo development. Who would want a bunch of grannies dictating your life.

A few years later and going to bed at 8:00 sounds a lot better than listening to some young people fight next door at 2am or some goof rev his motorcycle in his living room.

In a few more years I'll probably look fondly at nursing home life.:(

I just hope I never get tired of horsepower and new car smell. That would signal that it's time to throw dirt over my face.

At Walmart, you can buy a frozen 6-pack of regular White Castles or Cheeseburgers for $3.92. I buy them and keep 3 or 4 pkgs. in the freezer for those nights or weekends when we are just not in the mood for chops or chicken or meatballs.

They are not quite as good as buying them in the store, but if you put 6 of them, still in their cellophane pkgs., in a microwave on high for 2 minutes, they aren't that bad.

Happy New Year to all who post (or read) this forum. I made it all the way to 9:45 last night. Sheesh. Was awake from 3:30-5:30 then slept until almost 9 this morning. Somebody please tell me this isn't going to get worse.

Growing up in California, I was used to prime time on TV being 8-11. When I moved to Colorado (Mountain Time Zone), everything was moved up an hour. Love love love it. Every time I go back to CA for a visit I have to readjust my thinking about TV watching.

No White Castle here, but can get the frozen ones at the grocery store.

Thanks for explaining Mike. One of my wife's good friends died and we have a similar experience with her surviving husband. He's 87, stays in bed most of the day, can watch TV, mind is fairly good, but hearing is not good. My wife visits twice a day for an hour at a time.
She looks after all his banking and financial stuff. I try to help, but, I have to give her and you a lot of credit....it takes a lot of energy -emotional energy. I do a quarter of what she does and it drains me. Your Dad is very fortunate to have such a caring son.

Hmm, I'll have to try that moist paper towel approach to microwaving the White Castle Cheesebugers. Never done them that way before and the steaming is what makes fresh WC's so good as the are steamed at their stores.

I'll let you know how they come out the next time we have WC's. Thanks for the info!

I think I have this figured out. The new sophisticated Edmunds system actually knows the tone you have in your head as you’re writing a post. So, being proactive to avoid any problems when the post hits the street, it dumps it. Too bad it ain’t as smart as the old system that had post numbers and let you knew who replied to a given post. :o

As for your memory, you should be glad the new system doesn’t account for memory loss. ;)

I guess it is a new safety feature to help me stay out of trouble....not a bad idea.

We fly back to Florida tomorrow...from Buffalo NY. I just hope Buffalo doesn't get snowed in and flights are leaving...our SW flight originates from "Chicago" (which was really hit).

Weather when we leave Buffalo shows about 4 or 5 inches of snow expected and a high of 5F today and tomorrow, in Tampa we will arrive Fri with a high of only 55F, but Sat and Sun will be in mid 70s...........yeahhhhhhhhhhhh! Gotta get out of this place......I've had enough snow and cold.

That's one of the main reasons I never leave Florida in the winter to go anywhere by air. Even if I go to California to see the kids and grandkids, there are so many flights that originate in cities where they have snow that delays in Chicago could cause me a delay anywhere along my route.

Yes, driver, there is a cold front coming in from the northern tier of states that will drop temperatures in Florida by Saturday for those of us in the southern part of the State, however we will drop only into the high 50's by night and low 70's by day. There are advantages to living on the southeast Coast - usually warmer than Central Florida, but that is probably the only advantage. Summers tend to be warmer in Tampa/Orlando than in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, as well.

We are still being hit, it hasn't stopped snowing in 2 days.

Just finished clearing the first 5" of snow. It's cold and dry so it's light and fluffy.

So we're going to get some "cold" weather...finally? It's been a very warm winter so far and I'd love some cool weather to stay around for awhile. 50 at night and 75 by day is just fine by me...no need for any a/c and just crack the windows at night...perfect sleeping weather! Also am tired of using the a/c in the Tuscon and much prefer the open windows. Never thought about getting a moon roof and sorry now that I didn't find one with it...like to open it on a cool night and see the stars. Didn't really see any of the small utes I drove with any kind of hole in the roof and don't know if the Tuscon Limited models have them standard...doubt it. Still, I would've loved one for awhile!

I have had glass sunroofs on every car I've owned in the past 10 years down here in Florida - and you know what? I've never, ever opened any of them!

In the summer, it's too hot and humid to open it. In the winter, when it's cool enough to open it, the traffic noise or wind noise is too bothersome or it's too cold to open it.

For the 20 or so days it's mild enough to open, it's not worth the money or effort. What I have done is to "flip it" open for ventilation on nice days - not as noisy as fully open. Bah Humbug!!!

    Speaking of sunroofs...

How come I don't recall the Ford Mustang ever offering one? I wonder if you could have one installed at a custom shop aftermarket?

I had one installed on my '89 Mustang GT. But it is manual - they pop up or you can remove the glass manually. In order to have a sliding glass, the roof has to be "doubled" so there is room for the glass to be retracted.

Webasto offers power sunroofs for the Mustang that slide over the roof so the headliner doesn't have to be doubled up.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t be able to get an aftermarket sun/moon roof on any car. About 10 years ago before they became so standard my brother in the next town over from me did it at least 2 times. The thing I could never understand, and still can’t, is the aftermarket jobs close automatically when you turn the ignition off but none of the factory installed units do that. We have a secretary here that destroyed the interior of her 2 year old CTS and had to get a new one because she forgot to close the lid and of course it rained. I’m sure her insurance helped out but it still had to cost her. I’d ask her but I’m afraid to bring up the subject again because she was livid when it happened.

Had one put in my '79 Datsun 210 hatch and it was the worst piece of crap ever! Leaked from day 1 and the wife said never again...and never have but think one from the factory wouldn't be that bad. Of all the vehicles I test drove, none of them even had one. And at this time of the year, I know I would use it.

What year was this? Did you buy tickets? etc?

she forgot to close the lid and of course it rained. That and he fact I don't like sun on my head is why I'd never buy a slide roof on purpose like jmonroe's coworker.

Radio station call in contest. Hourly winners then were put into a hat and a grand winner drawn. 1979 Turbo 4-cylinder Pace Car. Near end of 1979; lots of dealers had trouble selling the 4-cyl models. Nice. Sold it a few months later in local Trading Post. Second caller on it excitedly asked if I still had it!!! Yup. He bought it. I Already had an Oldsmobile and a Buick with my new bride so we sold the Ford.

IIRC that was about the time Ford thought that with the oil crises and rising gas prices that at least 50% of the Mustangs sold would be 4 bangers so they built a lot of them. To bad the public thought differently.

Sunroofs and T-Tops used to be available on Mustangs, but for the most part they don't want too much competition for the convertibles. My 1986 GT had one. It could flip up in the back or you could manually take it out and store it in the hatch area.

Here's a picture. I remember them well as my friend from work was buying one. I pleaded with him to get the 302 engine, but he went with the turbo 4. 2 years later the turbo went out leaving him with a 4 cyl Mustang. Too bad.

Now they're putting ecoboost 3.5L turbo engines in F-150s. I'm still doubtful and would prefer the 5L. Roanoke dealer still has 9 Platinum ecoboost F-150s on his lot. All the 5.0s are sold. He tried to sell me one and I told him of a 5.0 in Charlotte and asked him to trade one of his "weedwacker" trucks for the 5.0 and I'd think about it. I guess even dealers won't trade for them.

Expect to see more and more of that as time passes by due to ever increasing CAFE standards.
