Some of the posters were recently describing the expense of living in an all electric home. Our 4,300 sq.ft. home is all electric with two heat pumps. Our electric bill averages $400 a month and includes water, sewage, and garbage pick-up. When I finally replace those 23 year old heat pumps, I may see a decrease in the electric bill. This past month was so cold that I will probably see a $600 bill coming in soon.

It's hard when we lose friends and relatives, and it happens more and more as we get older. We have a lot of fun with this eccentric British couple. She made any party a riot with her quick wit, able to talk to anyone. At Christmas time he would wear a Santa suit around the house and she had pajamas with reindeer all over...and she wore antlers. For Halloween the house was decorated with bats flying around. She was 87 and had so much energy I thought she would live at least 20 more years. Unfortunately, she had pains in her stomach. Went for tests at the hospital, wasn't the usual things like gall bladder. So they opened her up and found cancer had attacked her liver. She only survived one more day. It was a shock and we miss her...she brought joy and laughter to so many people.

There is nothing that one can say that can make things better at these times.....you are being very good by making these final months as nice as possible for your brother-in-law. My thoughts are with you.

Sad to hear Richard. Never easy to deal with, but he is lucky to have the support for the time he has left.

And not sure I mentioned while you were around, but at this point, my daughter (the HS senior) is planning to head to NC for college. She has a deposit in with Elon (she got an early decision) and we are going to the "rising Phoenix" prospective student weekend in late April.

still possible that she will change her mind when she gets decisions from the rest of the schools she applied to (that happens at the end of March). Or I change it for her, when I get the financial aid packages!

I may not be around as much for a while. My brother-in-law was diagnosed last week with Stage 4 cancer. It has spread rapidly within the last month, from the kidneys to the liver and spine. He was feeling fine until he returned from Dubai after Christmas from visiting his son (my nephew) and his two grandchildren.

The father of my son's friend went like that. Fine until one day he couldn't get out of bed. Advanced lung cancer, gone in 3 weeks.

Truth be told, that's how I want to go out. Quick and to the point.

Richard, I hope the gods shine down on all of you for your trip to FL, so your BIL can enjoy his visit. You and your wife seem to be the epicenter for taking care of family matters. Hopefully, your family appreciates it.
A guy my wife works with has stage 4 pancreatic cancer, although much younger.
My wife told me one of the things on his list was to drive a convertible.
That was my impetus forgetting the Mustang on the road last year.
I had no idea it would take almost 2 months to bring it back to life and by then he had bought his own. I did try, though.

POSSIBLE BUY BACK ON THE FORD ESCAPE

I finally received the recall notice for the Escape I bought in June. It said isolated cracks in the cylinder head could develop from inconsistent heat and that could lead to oil leaks and possible fires. I knew it was coming and knew that parts and/or fixes wouldn't be ready until February.

I did an internet search today and discovered that this is the 6th recall for the 1.6 liter engine - most of them being fire related. I think that's accurate, but anyway one fire possibility is one too many. I haul a 6 year-old and her 10 year-old brother a minimum of four times a week and don't want to be worried about it. After reading through the recalls I wonder if they will ever get them fixed.

I sent a text message to my sales rep. and told them I wanted them to buy it back. I also said I would buy another Escape as long as it has the 2.0 liter engine.

He replied in about an hour and said the dealership would do it, but charge me for the time and miles I have owned it. I think that is completely reasonable.

It looks like a 2014 Escape Titanium is in my future assuming everything goes OK. We will see, but it seems like the dealership is stepping up to the plate.

Sorry to hear about those problems venture, and they seem to be very serious, and I understand your concerns. On the one hand, it is nice that Ford will switch vehicles without too much trouble, and it is probably best to take them up on their offer.

I just wonder whether the deal is as good as it sounds....it depends on how much they charge you I suppose, for basically leasing the car for that time period. You shouldn't be charged the full leasing cost or more than what a lease would be. If you had bought the 2 litre model in the first place you would have put that money into paying down your car. That's why you bought it in the first place.

It is nice they are trying to keep you satisfied, but, you really have to look at the charges. And, remember, you have to allow for your emotions...at this point you are just happy to get out of owning a car that you have misgivings about. If the charges are excessive, they are taking advantage of you.

I don't know what the difference is between the 2 engines, but if you Google it, it is only the 1.6 liter engine that is affected.

When I test drove the Escape, the one I drove had the 1.6 and it seemed fine to me. I normally buy sporty cars, but decided to "drop out" for a while and I also wanted to try 4 wheel drive. This winter it looks like that part was right on.

I have never owned a Ford before - first one. I'm tenacious. Maybe more than I should be, besides everyone deserves a second chance - but not a third. This better be right.

Venture....just me, but I'd really want to know what the dealership is thinking when they state they'll deduct for mileage and time? I've had cars that were "lemoned"...one very recently. In all cases, the Regional Rep from the manufacturer had to get involved, at the very least. I found the dealerships kind of wash their hands when it comes to lemon buy backs. It's not up to the dealer to declare a car a "lemon" buy back, as those are very hard to resell.

I would be cautious. They might come in with a regular trade offer for your vehicle. Which is probably not going to be very appealing.

Wishing the best for you. But, please let us know what they work out for you on the financial side.

    Random comments about Chryslers Super Bowl ad featuring Bob Dylan;

    • why an Italian company, Chrysler parent Fiat SpA, was doing a patriotic ad.
    • Dylans words; “You can’t fake true cool,” “You can’t duplicate legacy.”
    • Sergio Marchionne, chief executive officer of Fiat and of Chrysler, suggested to reporters at the Detroit auto show last month that the car featured in 2011 didn’t measure up to the quality of the ad itself.
    • The car it featured, the 200, was a facelift for a troubled model previously known as the Sebring, and never matched up to Ford Motor Co.’s Fusion, Honda Motor Co.’s Accord or Toyota Motor Corp.’s segment-leading Camry. The new 200, due in showrooms in the first half of the year, is redesigned throughout, improving upon the design, fuel efficiency, technology and performance.
    • In the ad, Dylan says, “So let Germany brew your beer, let Switzerland make your watch, let Asia assemble your phone,” Dylan says. “We … will build … your car.”
    • The Chrysler ad prompted some customers to take a look at the car, according to Edmunds.com, which tracks online response. Consideration of the Chrysler 200 more than doubled during the ad

Personally, I enjoyed the ad, but, doubt it would make me buy a 200.

They offered way more than clean trade-in - way more. The total is around $2,000 so that's not bad for having use of a vehicle for 8 months.

When I talked to them I said that I didn't want to even hear them mention trade-in prices or auction prices. So far they are doing the right thing. We will see.

There is always one "gotcha" though. They said to do it I will have to finance through Ford Credit. Their interest rate is more than I can get locally or through my credit union. I told them that that was fine and I would just refinance through my credit union after they "earn" their spiff on the financing which means I would have to make three payments to Ford Credit. I can live with that.

It's not done yet, but it looks promising.

At least your dealer is doing far more than my Hyundai dealer did when Mrs. j’s XG350 blew up. As I said about that situation when it happened...the dealer makes all the difference in the world when things go wrong.

As for the financing, being a nice guy you would make 3 payments then refinance with whomever you want to go with but you could do it right away if you wanted to risk getting bad service when you needed it. You’re doing the right thing. It’s just going to cost you a little more up front.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

That's really good if you are moving up from a 2013 to a 2014. Not sure, but since you bought the 13 in June that may be the case.
Even if that's not the case....it does seem to be very fair, can't do much better than that.

I am surprised that Ford would let that recall go so long without getting around to actually doing something. If there is a mishap...as in a fire starting in one of their cars, when they knew about the problem, it might not be too good for them.

One incident isn't a deal breaker, but, if that is how they treat problems repeatedly, I would hesitate to buy a Ford product down the road (it is unlikely anyway - but that will seal it).

WELL, HAD MY TAXES FILED TODAY

When I went in this morning to have my Income Taxes done, I expected to have to pay above and beyond my withholding amount because of the two jackpots I hit last year at the casino. I had to itemize in order to deduct the gambling losses so they equaled the winnings because I gambled more than I won. I haven't itemized my deductions in years but I probably should have.

I was able to deduct sales taxes because in the State of Florida we don't have a state income tax. So since I bought two cars last year, that became a great deduction. Then I had taxes I paid on the condo. So it worked out pretty good because I'll get a refund - I was shocked. Luckily I have Illinois take out 25% in withholding taxes.

At least this yearly burden is over with.

You're never supposed to mention that incident again.

(Although, I have to say, it is relevant to this situation. I guess you would have been satisfied if Hyundai offered you a similar deal, though it would have to be more than $2k, considering a new engine and older trade-in)

Since it was my car I’m allowed to bring it up whenever I want to. You on the other hand have to be granted permission.

But since you don’t play by my rules, I’ll say this. The dealer offered to put in, a new out of the crate short block Hyundai engine, for $3200 plus tax (a hair over $3400 total to me). That is not a bad price for a new engine and they said it would be warranted for 100K miles, which to me didn’t mean much because of what happened to the original at around 43K miles that they did not stand behind. In any case, since I wasn’t sure if I could get my money out of it (would have been worth $6K tops with a good engine), I settled for $2800 as an outright buy offer from the dealer. I could have been wrong about that decision but my sons felt that no one would want to buy it from me since the warranty was not transferable and I surely was not going to warrant it myself. They felt that I’d be lucky to get $5700 for it with the new engine and no more than $2300 for it with a blown engine, which I pretty much confirmed.

In the end maybe I should have had it repaired and kept it. After all, even with the good deal I got on Mrs. j’s ’12 Legacy Limited it still cost me around $29K without tax. The dealer dropped an engine in the ’05 XG350 and put it on his lot for almost $10K (this was in December 2011). Yes, $10K if you can believe that. I can’t imagine that he got that but he probably got around $8K, but me as an individual trying to sell it myself, my research said all I could reasonably expect to get on the high end was around $6K.

All of that is water over the dam now, so I have to live with that decision.

Hey everyone. I see a lot of familair usernames but the interface threw me off a bit. I see Edmunds has been through a bit of redeisgn. Anyways I'm back in the car biz after I left for about half a year, this time working in a used car lot. Funny enough I'm having the most fun I ever had selling cars. I'll try to visit more often and throw in a few stories as well. Just one questions. Do new comments now show from top to bottom (opposite of what it was?)

Go to your username in the navigation box. Then Profile. Then Edit Settings. Then Notification Preferences. Put check marks in the box for Notify me when people comment on my bookmarked discussions

OK, figured it out. I had to go on to my desktop to make settings changes. But the right boxes are checked for emails but I am not getting emails.

Perhaps one of our hosts can assist me here.
