Its a racket, they use the price of gas as an excuse to raise prices, yet when gas prices go down I never see stories on the news about how retailers are slashing prices due to the decrease in fuel cost, I only see the opposite of it when they go up.
Also when you see the price of a barrel of crude oil increases by $1 the gas prices fly up the next day. When they drop $1 you get the song and dance that the prices will not feel relief until they start to proccess the crude oil they purchased at that price.
It is all a matter of conditioning. They condition the consumer to be comfortable with a price. The prices go from $2.80 to $3.10 and we all get in an uproar, yet when they drop them back to $2.99 we all feel relief.
How come with all of the modern technology we have now it cost more to produce a gallon of gas then it did 20 years ago? You would think that we would have the process streamlined by now :confuse:
You'd think Mustangs would work the same way. After 44 years of producing these pony cars they should be able to reduce the price so every Ford employee and every Taco Bell employee would be able to afford a GT. I see they still use a stick to hold the hood open yet price remains high. Then they add Roush 1-3 and push the price to the 40k range. How bout them apples. It just happens to be what the consumer will pay to play.
You'd think Mustangs would work the same way. After 44 years of producing these pony cars they should be able to reduce the price so every Ford employee and every Taco Bell employee would be able to afford a GT

Actually, they do print stories about that all the time - when prices do fall! I just googled "price gasoline falling" (without the quotes) and got over 1,000,000 hits. Depending on whom you talk to, the most commonly given reasons are reduced demand, end of hostility in the Middle East or Republican ploys to affect elections.
If we were still producing the same car as we were 44 years ago they would be.
Thankfully not! 44 years ago they didn't even have seatbelts let alone airbags and other safety features to say nothing of improved emissions controls, catalytic converters, improved gas mileage, better tires and so on.

This is exactly how I explain this gas price increase phenomena to Mrs. jmonroe.
When, as an oil company, you want more profits (some CEO will be retiring and needs that parachute money), keep raising gas prices until people almost faint then back off a dime or so and you’ll hear this deafening exhale from consumers, then everybody is happy again (well, almost). Then when they want more money (same cause, Christmas bonuses, etc.) they just do it again.
To me there seems to be an explainable trend going on here (for what must be at least two decades or more by now) but what do I know; I don’t have an economics degree, I only have a wallet that gets thinner and the worst part of it is I know exactly how it’s going to happen.

Not splitting any hairs here. Whether the 2008 models are out or not makes no difference to me. The original post was about Mustangs and that they had been built for 44 years. That was not my post. I was just responding to posts which were made about that original post. Look back and read them, you'll see.
Our 1962 Dodge had seatbelts. Lots of cars had seatbelts 44 years ago(and earlier). Whether they were standard equipment front and back makes no difference to me either.
Our weekend sucked around here. 7 Saturday, 3 Sunday, and we are sitting on 4 right now with 2 hours to go. Not our best effort. Heck we just drew cards and let half the sales force go home.
Volvo had the first safety belts in 1849. The first U.S. patent for automobile seat beats was issued to Edward J. Claghorn of New York, New York on February 10, 1885. Claghorn was granted United States Patent #312,085 for a Safety-Belt for tourists, described in the patent as "designed to be applied to the person, and provided with hooks and other attachments for securing the person to a fixed object." I actually new this prior to finding the link. I helped my daughter on a report one time that had to do with the evolution of the car. Yes Volvo came up with a "Safety belt" not a Seat Belt" so I guess it could have not been in a car. The history of the seatbelt
If memory serves me correctly, the '64 Mustang did not come with seat belts (lap belts) though you could have them as an option for about $10 each. Seat belts were not mandated by federal law until 1973 and even then Ford was resisting installing 3-point seat belts.
You guys wanna hear a sales story?....ok, then here is one. It's memorial day, and our business can't decide if it's open or closed.....no mechanics on duty, detail men didn't show up, (but lot boy did), greenpea salesman is here, along with me (i do a little bit of everything). It's a small business, and the owner is generally on site-but today, he's not.
So there's absolutely no one around, so I say "F this" and go home, leaving the just the salesperson and lot boy behind-I say, if there's any action, give me a ring and I'll help you with the deal/financing, etc.
Well, I get a phone call later that there's a customer on the lot, wanting to trade from their '98 to an '04 model. I say good, what is the customer's name. I get the name from the customer, remember that the customer was in the office a month a go, and that this particular customer had a 4xx credit score. So I don't really care, and tell the sales person, "take them for a test drive", knowing that most likely it's an absolute waste of time. Now this particular customer is a repeat, repeat customer who generally deals directly with the owner, and they have some arrangment for in house financing or something.
So, the customer comes back from the test drive, loves the car, and I get a call from the salesperson and start the finance from my home computer-and the same 4xx credit score comes up-so I'm like, I knew it was a waste of time. But then, all of a sudden, I'm told to take the cosigner information-and boom-700+ score-so I'm thinking, hey, we can sell these people something today, and we can put a deal together, so I get some energy. Tell the salesperson, "I'll be in the office in 15 min".
I run to the office, and this is when the fun begins. Customer states, I was in the office 30 days ago and the owner told me he would give me this for my trade (yeah i dont think so) or (wow he must have jacked up the selling price about 100%). Ask the salesperson what price he gave the customer-quoted drop dead low internet price-I think, OH MAN I'm stuck. I take the conversation to a different subject, let me first focus if I can get you financing in the first place. In the meantime, I contact the owner, and he tells me, yeah, the trade was based on what I was selling them last time-so just tell them the price of this car this-I would love to, but they were already quoted a price. Go back to the customer, play the whole game-what year is your trade in, what's the mileage, does your car have A/C? All while I'm up on kbb trade online. Kbb trade comes up 2gs lower than what they were quoted last time, but still high, so I say, I'll give you whatever this says (even in excellent condition!). Back and forth, left and right, and 4 hours later, they sign.
All for one deal on memorial day when it was 85 and sunny out. Can't anything be easy for once Hope you enjoyed the story.
It was my first week on the job and even though I'm new to Nissans, I still know my product knowledge.
Dude and a girl in their 30s come in and look around. They sit in our 350Z ask a few questions, and I answer them the best I can. He tells me they're lookijng around to maybe get a car for her.
Then he asks me if Nissan has another car that's called "Z". I say no this is the only type of Z Nissan has.
The reason he asked is cause his friend has one and it's a 4 seater, and it looks exactly like the 350Z and it's a Nissan, but it's a 4 seater. He says his friend's car has a big fin/spoiler on the back, and asks if Nissan makes anything like that. I tell him the spoiler could be could be aftermarket, but no there is no 4 seat 350Z.
He wanted to speak to another salesperson who knows more than me cause he tells me that I don't know my stuff or what he's talking about.
I told him I might not have been here long but I know my product. I suggest to him that his friend might not be driving a Nissan at all, and he disagrees with me, tells me it is a Nissan.
I tried to suggest maybe it's a Mazda RX8, or a mid 90s Supra Turbo (has a big spoiler on the back), but he disagrees.
Then I suggest to him that it could be a mid 90s 300ZX 2+2. I sit him down, show him a picture on the net, and he tells me that is not it either.
Well the only other car that looks similiar would be a Infiniti G35 coupe. He looks at it, and tells me no it isn't. Then he asks me about used G35s and how much they go for, and if we have any. We didn't at the moment so I offer to take his number and call him if one shows up.
He then tells me he wouldn't buy one from a dealer anyways, because it's nothing but hassle, and waste of money. He tells me he has a friend who goes to dealer auctions and can get him whatever he wants, just with one phone call.
I'm thinking ok, then what are you doing here, are you here because you're honestly interested in something, kicking tires, or you're trying to talk big to impress your girlfriend.
So I tell him, hey it's good to have friends with hookups, but make sure you don't end up with an out of warranty rebuilt car or one with shady history.
He tells me that warranties are useless, and once the car is 2 years old and nothing breaks on it, it will be fine forever. I was just about to share my story of my friend's BIL who bought a rebuilt G35 and sank $8k into it, because it had no warranty, and still has nothing but problems with it.
But a customer like this has such a big head that no matter what you say to him, he's the expert. So I just let it go.
And the kicker is: for a guy who comes in and tries to show off, that he knows it all and has cash to blow on a $50k car for his GF, you'd think he'd at least driving a half decent car.
Well, he was driving a beat up Suzuki Aerio.

"How come with all of the modern technology we have now it cost more to produce a gallon of gas then it did 20 years ago? You would think that we would have the process streamlined by now"
Well, all the "cheap" oil is pretty much gone. Thanks to technology they can now get oil that would've been impossible to extract 20 years ago (both from a technological and financial point of view).
Don't forget the environmental costs. A spillproof tanker doubtless costs alot more than the old Exxon Valdez type. Now consider pollution contrls for the refineries, all the different formula's of gas to combat smog etc.
Have a friend that was looking at the Ford Fusion and just wanted the very basic no frills 4 banger with a stick shift. So he goes to a Ford dealer to check if they could order one (sticks being scarce as hens teeth) and the salesman goes to the sales manager. Seems like for the upcoming weekend they just happened to get one so they can advertise a very low cost Fusion to draw in customers for the big weekend. Apparently it came off the truck a couple of hours before.
Long story short my friend ends up with what he wanted and the dealership sells their $15K-something advertised Fusion before the print ad even comes out. Talk about timing.

The dealership wasn't obligated to sell the Fusion for the sale price, seems they screwed themselves out of some money... not very smart. Add to the fact someone is bound to show up first thing in the morning the day the ad comes out, expecting to buy a Fusion... strike 2. The fact that it is a Ford product... strike 3! (just kidding) :P
Would be interesting to see how long that ad gets run. I'm guessing 6 weeks, seems to be about how long screamer ads run.
I dropped by a local dealership. They sent out flyers. Had ballons on all the cars. I wanted my free prize.
Salesman I've bought something from was out on the lot. Not feeling well, a tooth was just pulled and it had given him 3 sleepless nights. He also didn't have anything good to say about the management's big sale event, which was expected to sell about 10 cars a day. They had sold 3. The prizes were gone for the day, they had set a limit of how many per day they were giving away.
He did have something funny to say. "About 90% of the people coming in don't have enough money to add cheese to their Whopper!" I loved it.
Yeah, I wondered if the post might be a little off base too, but since three other members, including kind HOST, had just posted political comments, I figured I might as well put one in too. I was not really trying to start a discussion about candidates here. I'm wondering how my one comment is so different from the other three. Oh they will blame Bush and Cheney for it. They blame them for everything else including The fall of Rome, Viking attacks, The Cubs inability to win a championship, the south losing the Civil War, and the death of Alexander the Great (as well as his little known brother Bob the Average).

Democans and Republicrats. NO difference. Both are for bigger more expensive government and a soon to be (entirely) worthless dollar.
Gimme a Constitutionalist or even a Libertarian instead.
Ron Paul is a Republican but is also a Constitutionalist. Elect Ron Paul (or maybe even Tom Tancredo).
Just to be clear, your previous message was not removed!
My comment was not really directed at you specifically but since your message was tending toward endorsement I wanted to suggest that we all head back to the designated topic. And, for the record, I enjoy an occasional political dig as much as the next guy or gal.

True, but how much of a stink would someone raise if they didn't honor the advertised sales price.
Add to the fact someone is bound to show up first thing in the morning the day the ad comes out, expecting to buy a Fusion... strike 2.
Thats what I was thinking, but the fact still remains they had the advertised car and sold it for the advertised price.
2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
The altima coupe landed here yesterday. The car is insane :shades:
