I use my cruise almost any time I'm going to hold a set speed for any length of time. The only time I don't like cruise control is when people set it on 3mph over the speed limit and sit in the left lane. :P

I love sunroofs. I use mine any time I'm going to be in the car for any length of time and it isn't raining. I'm also a windows-down kinda guy. In my 95 Civic, I never used the A/C unless it was hot and raining, even in central Texas. My 99 mustang didn't have it and I missed it so much.

As far as ruining your leather interior- I think you'd be suprised at how tough most automotive leather is. I had a really bad habit of leaving my windows cracked in my mustang only to find the seats drenched after a sudden downpour. I'd guess 50+ times in 6 years. Never hurt them one bit (though I did clean and condition them once a month). As long as it's not a constant thing and isn't allowed to dry (read mold), the worst you'd experience is a wet butt.

it has been a while since i posted. but thought i would chime in on the keypad feature.
my family is definitely sold on it. if my kids want to get in, they don't have to ask for the keys.
my kids do 'on the water' sports, so they don't want to take the keys, plus they don't have to leave their books, phone, cash out where others can take it. my kids friends now put their stuff in the explorer because it is safe.
i really have it itch to 'get sold' another car and i think it will be another ford. they have been good to us.
i took my '04 focus out to western ohio, up to central michigan and back over labor day weekend. 2200 miles, 37.5 mpg average. it is rated at 33 mpg on the highway.
    i'm thinking another ford. :)

How many buttons on the LR2 OR LR3 remote?

It figures that the 3 buttons on a LR3 remote would be too much for a Toyota salesmen to handle. :shades:

In case you haven't noticed this is a public forum. If you want a "private line", you'll have to sign up for Premium Service but the dues are higher and the participation is almost nonexistent but you can do what suits you best. But if you post here others can hear it.

If you're bored, then don't read it!

Bored? BORED doesn't begin to describe it. My vocabulary is limited maybe others can describe it better. However, I tried to stay with it but what I said in post 17508 was as far as I could go.

I had a great time today with a good old fashioned negotiator. This cat wanted to negotiate everything, and what made him tough is he kept jumping around, one minute it was trade, then selling price, then OTD and then payment. We would agree on one and then he would change to the other.

The funny part was that at one point he had himself so confused that he made an OTD offer and I agreed to it then he said that as long as the payment was $450 we were GTG, well to get to $450 I would have had to raise his OTD offer $1100. Thats what I closed him with. Asked him if ever in his life a car dealer gave him $1100, he said hell no. I then asked if he would hook up at the OTD offer if I gave him back the $1100 he gave me. We got a good laugh out of it.

Then he bought a Warranty and Lojack so I really liked him then :D

I am sick. I have been in and out of work for the past three days and haven't been able to stay the whole day without leaving early.

I managed to deliver one car on Monday and sell one car today but that is it. I have gotten nothing done otherwise and I still feel like crap now.

I would think that most people on highways drive in areas where the grade changes are not enough to make that much of a difference. I live in Northern IL and while we do have elevation changes its not enough to cause many issues using cruise control. I think there are few grades on the interstate highways that exceed 6%.

I, at times, drive to Florida from Chicago and IIRC there is only one place along the almost 1300 mile drive where the grade would be an issue. And only 3 areas where traffic would be an issue.

If traffic is heavy enough to require repeated adjustments to your speed then cruise control should not be used simply for safety issues.

I've run US95 more than once, and it's nice country. Hope your parents enjoy their new car.

I still remember the guy in Ohio who I was working with back in the mid-80's when he got his brand new Taurus -- he was very proud of it.

"Cruise control?? Never bother with that either."

Do you ever leave the county? Though I can appreciate that those who drive a few thousand miles a year have little use for cruise, I'm interested that there is someone out there who is even more averse to new stuff than I am. I just got my own cell phone (the women in the family have had them for years) a few months ago, but I've been using cruise control for decades.

Are flush toilets & electric lights? . . .oh well, never mind.

it was early this year when i started carrying a cell phone, and trust me, i have the cheapest of phones and plans.

i avoid cruise. i have much finer control over the vehicle and even though i'm aging, my brain shall always be more capable of controlling my vehicle's speed under changing conditions than a microprocessor being fed impoverished information.

Go home and drink some reposado. Heat up a few sticks of cinnamon in a metal pan until the water boils and it turns a nice golden brown. Pour into a 16 or 24 oz mug, squeeze a wedge of lemon or lime into it and add about 4 to 6 oz of Tequila and sip until you pass out. You'll wake up feeling much better in the morning.

I had a "challenging" day. ;) Two deals that I thought were done fell through. You may remember the Sienna deal that I worked on Tuesday that my GM called me about yesterday (my day off) and the customer didn't show. Here's what happened:

As I waited for the customers to show I had a sneaky suspicion that they may have gone to another dealership. I called a sales manager friend who works at the other store and asked: "Chester, by any chance is there a customer by the name of Gonzales at your store right now? They are shopping for a Sienna." I ask. "No one here but a single gentleman sitting at a table. What does the customer look like?" he asks. "It's a hispanic couple." I respond as I proceed to describe them. "Wait, there's someone coming in the door now. (pause) Is the wife sort of "chunky"?" he asks. "Yep." I respond. "They have a kid with them?" he continues. "Yep." I respond. "They're here." he laughs. I give him a rundown of what they did at my store and he says: "If they are stupid enough to come in at 20 minutes before closing time, we're going to put them through the ringer. You know Gus doesn't like anybody keeping him here late."
I tell my sales manager the customers are at the other store and I get ready to go home. I get in my car and since the store in question is on my way I decide to drive by. I pull into the lot and I can see the couple sitting at a table but no sales person in sight. I dialed the home number and ask the daughter for the mom's cell phone as I pretend to be someone looking for a house. I call her phone and when she picks up I ask "Hey, where are you guys? I been waiting for you since 7pm and I finally got a hold of your daughter and she told me you were on the way but must have gotten sidetracked since it's been over an hour and you didn't show." ;)
Claire proceeds to tell me that she never told my boss they would come over at 7. "You boss must be lying, I told him I would talk to my husband and let him know." she says. "Now why would my boss drag me in on my day off if you were not coming in?" I respond. "Well, we found a better deal closer to our house." she says. "Really? How much better?" I ask. "They are giving us the DVD plus this van is an LE not a CE and has chrome rims and a spoiler." she replies. "My van was an LE not a CE. And I also have one with alloys and a spoiler. Plus we are "throwing in" the dvd system and getting you the extended warranty for $1595.00" I tell her. Now the whole time this conversation is going on I'm sitting in my car parked right next to the van they are buying and can see them through the showroom window. "What do you think I should do?" she asks. "I don't know. It's your money but you told me you really don't care about the wheels and the spoiler. How much are they selling it to you for?" I ask her. "They are giving it to us for $26,456.00 with the DVD. We are paying for the extended warranty separately." she responds. 'And how much is the warranty?" I ask. "I don't know. We haven't discussed that yet. We are not trading the van, I have a friend that told me she would buy it from me." she continues. "That's what I told you to do last night!" I exclaim. "You know go ahead and do what you think it's best for you." I tell her. "Well, you had a ready buyer last night and you let us go. I know you didn't have control over it so it's not your fault." she says. "Well, you were being unreasonable about your trade. Plus when we start at invoice there is nowhere else to go. Maybe next time."
I get off the phone and call the store at 2 minutes till closing. They are still in since there was a deal working when I left. I ask to talk to the sales manager and give him the rundown of the deal. "They are buying the van for $26,456.00 with the dvd and taking the trade out of the picture." I tell him. "That's more than ours. We were at $25,987.00" he responds. "Yeah, but theirs has a spoiler and alloys." I respond. "Do we have one with the wheels and spoiler?" he asks. "Yeah, we got a blue mirage." I respond. "Call them back and tell them we'll better the deal." he tells me. I get back on the phone and this time her voice mail picks up. "Hey Claire, it's Mack. Look before you sign up here's the deal. Whatever they give you we'll match it and give you $500.00. Call me back and let me know." I don't get a call back so I wait until this morning and call her back around 9:00am. No answer just the voice mail again. Later in the day I call Chester and he tells me Gus took their head off in finance. They bought a warranty for $1800.00 and some other products. "Hey, you get some of our customers so don't feel bad." he says. "I don't, it's just the nature of the beast"

So I guess I could call you a rocket scientist and you wouldn't be offended? Just kidding John. You see, you have not been around long enough in these boards to understand my sense of humor. If it will make you feel better I will calculate your lease or better yet. Give me a Toyota to do the lease on since I don't sell Acuras and I don't feel like searching all over the web for money factors and residuals, et al. And I am sorry about your wife. I am no stranger to this dreadful disease, I lost my beautiful mother to cancer three years ago. Six months later I was diagnosed and have lost a cousin since and an uncle is currently fighting lung cancer. Me, I've had surgery, gone through chemo twice, and my latest scan was not good. So yeah, you could say I'm a bit of a cynic sometimes but after all that I've been through in the last three years I think I have the right to a little fun and this is like therapy to me.

Okay Mack, If I came off as arrogant, then please accept my sincere apology because that was not my intent. And it certainly wasn't my intent to come off as a smart [non-permissible content removed] either.

Sounds as though you've really been put through the ringer several times. I had melanoma and my small right finger had to be amputated. Fortunately, there was no node involvement. But melanoma is weird stuff. It can travel through the blood stream and so I'm on a 5 year follow-up. My wife (51 years old) passed away in April from breast cancer. I'm still whacked out as you can probably tell. I'll never get over it and have no plans to re-marry even though I'm only 57. Besides, I don't think I could find someone willing to put up with me anyway.

You seem like a pretty nice guy. I actually enjoyed reading your profile and thought it was very well done.

Okay, I'll rig a Toyota example but only to illustrate my point. I assume you're in Virginia. How does Va. compute sales tax? On the payment streams?

    A. Ignore posts regarding the correctness of our programs

    What are you talking about???

You are the one who stated that our programs were inferior. Read posts 17472,17474,17475 and 17476. I have done sign and drive, one pay, regular leases and balloons for years without error or problem. We have all done that exercise in training to understand concept, but use the computer for speed and to insure accuracy, Just don't tell people who have years of experience that they are ignorant and wrong. Nuf said.
I am sorry about your wife. I just lost a cousin and a sister to lung cancer. May you find peace.
  • delta737hdelta737h Member Posts: 626
Okay Irguy44, maybe these miscalculations are confined to certain dealerships in the state of Ohio. I shouldn't assume that they're occurring elsewhere and I don't think I have.

Ohio computes tax on the total payments and some customers want to roll the tax into the lease as well as the first payment. As I said, I haven't found an Ohio dealer yet that can correctly compute leases structured in this fashion.

Also, many thanks for your kind words. They're much appreciated.

    John
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
No problem. The only tricky thing here is that we have 4 taxes that vary by location (state, county, city and RTD). Cap Reduction is taxed up front. We also have some localities where local taxes must be collected up front. Once those hurdles are addressed, the lease is a piece of cake. And maybe I took it wrong, but you did seem to attack all dealers. No harm done except we need to wake moo and tidester up.

We are all on a five year follow-up. I had colon cancer stage 3 in 2004. Had a re-section and spent two weeks in the hospital after my incision got infected. They say giving birth is the toughest pain there is; well I had my staples removed from my pubic bone to my sternum and then the skin torn open without anesthesia. If you have never heard a grown man scream and cry at the same time than you don't know what pain is. When I went home I thought I was going to die. Just imagine going to bed at night knowing you have cancer. Then sleeping and dreaming nice dreams then you wake up and you still have cancer. Two and a half months later I started chemo for five months. Quarterly scans and a year later four tumors in my liver and two more in my colon. Six months of intensive chemo. There were a couple of times where I became neutropenic. White blood counts very low where I was subject to opportunistic infections and I caught a few where I had to be hospitalized. I made it through the six month regimen. This was last November 1st. I had my last scan a week ago wednesday and as I said it's not pretty. But I don't want to burden any of you with my troubles. Life goes on. So if I don't seem too receptive to your lease calculation is not that I don't care. I just don't have the time.

Oh come on now, don't you know that topics are like teflon? Nothing sticks to it.

But on topic, She Who Must Be Obeyed is thinking that we should trade in one of our well used cars and get a new one. So the other day we go out looking at mid sized sedans. We go to one dealer and one salesman starts talking to us and tells us that he had someone just in that was looking for the car we drove in with. Really? Someone came to you looking for a 7 year old Hyundai station wagon?

Do salesmen really still pull that one?

    Yeah, me too.

Mack was missing in action in these forums for several months which gave a bunch of us a scare.

    Life is fragile.

I do have some advise for my friend Mackabee.

If I get a call on my day off that a customer wants to come in and buy a car, with rare exception, I will make arrangements for one of my co-workers to help them. I'll still get a half deal and it'll be stress free.

I have learned that a large percentage of people who say they are coming at a certain time, never show. Or,something may prevent a deal from happening and I will have come in for nothing.

Also, I have learned that when people ask me how long I'm going to be at work, I will always tell them I'm leaving an hour before I relly plan to be off. If I'm off at six, I'll tell them..." I should be around until at least 5:00.

I've learned that if I don't do this, they will ALWAYS show up at five minutes to six. Not a big deal, but buying a car, doing the paperwork and delivery is usually a two hour thing.

    Maybe I'm just getting lazy?

Hey folks, I'm an avid "lurker" on this thread and really enjoy reading all of the information that has made my car shopping so successful. I've got a question for the dealers and would like to know how they would respond. I have a friend whose dad made the mistake of going car shopping and didn't take me along. I'll be as brief as possible.

The guy (60ish) with really no means to buy this expensive of vehicle 45k goes to the dealership to buy a used vehicle with payment of around $320. Salesman sees his opportunity and LEASES him a brand new vehicle for MSRP and 60 month contract, payment of $550 after tax etc. The guy gets home and his son is livid to say the least. Son goes to dealership and sales manager is sympathetic but offers no real solution to back out the deal. He offers $1500 off purchase of new vehicle. From what I can surmise the dealership made $8-9k off of the deal.

Now I hold nothing against the dealership, they only put a contract in front of a man that was stupid enough to sign it. You've gotta love America where we all have an inalienable right to enough rope to hang ourselves with. The son wants his old man to back out of the deal however he can. The lease was through an independent bank not the manufacturer leasing arm. The truck has been driven for ten days now. The bank calls and says they do not have a signed credit application and they want the old man to go down to a branch and sign it. The son sees this as an opportunity to unravel the deal can he? If the old man does not sign it will the bank pull the financing? I've heard of banks coming back after the sale and saying the borrower is not eligible for the loan and the whole deal being unraveled but never this? Is there enough here to unravel a deal? I'm interested to see what you have to say. Thanks for your input.
