Genesis got a really good write up in our newspaper yesterday.

Interior is nicer than many cars costing 10 to $15,000 more!

That’s what I keep hearing. While I’m not on my way to the ‘poor house’, I’m not spending an extra $15K just to show people that I have an extra $15K. :confuse:

Moo, you are exactly right! I spend two years here learning to trust and respect you guys, and now this [non-permissible content removed] comes up with this garbage. I want this crap removed as in NOW. I absolutely refuse to believe that human nature can be that mean spirited at every dealership in America. Our Hosts have removed plenty of posts before now. I say get with it!

Oh come on its entertaining. If this guy wants to write a book about his 10 years in the business, who are we to stand in the way.

Is some of it fabricated?? Who knows? Is some of it true? Quite possibly?

Are we to be so bold that we don't think certain dealerships are run like he says? I would venture to guess that educated buyers can tell the difference from walking in to one of these dealerships.

This forum is about "stories" so why not let him have his due. If he wants to offer stories, I would enjoy the read. If his goal is just to promote his book, well then we don't need that.

From personal experience selling cars it's hard to beat a minivan on passenger space and cargo capacity, and fuel economy.

Even if you get a suburban or another large SUV, once that 3rd row of seats is up there' snot much more cargo space left. Minivans typically have a taller trunk area with a recessed carego floor that holds the folded 3rd row seats, and due to their unibidy design. SUV cargo floors are typically higher due to their body on frame design, and might not have as much height in the back.

Suburban might be comparable, but if you need more space you're going to have4 to look at a Ford Econoline, or a Dodge Sprinter van. ;)

Trouble is, some people actually believe this crap.

I wonder if the owner of the store where he works knows what he is up to?
  • madmanmoomadmanmoo Member Posts: 2,039
It's entertaining if one person is talking about himself. I like hearing stories about individuals.

What is not entertaining is when he says that EVERYONE does this. I don't like being lumped into the same category as some schmo salesman.

He's welcome to tell some stories. And he can make them up for all I care. I simply don't like the fact that he is stating that everyone in the car business is like this.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
I agree with mooo... This guy should find a different place to peddle his book.

The stuff he writes about has been regurgitated in a million stories already, nothing he's saying has any new significance. Is there bad dealers out there? Yeah, there's bad apples in every industry. So what. Try to avoid them and get on with life.

I agree about the money/salary part too that someone mentioned. If you made so much money why would you then try to sell your system or training instead of continuing to make lots of money your old way. People that try to sell "systems" usually can't cut it on the sales floor so they resort on bashing others or who can cut it, or try to push their ill conceived training ideas onto newbies who can't call their bluff.

Easy there, what ever happened to Mr. Nice Guy ? I don’t think his post warrants “removal”. He didn’t mention the name of his book. So, therein might lie the technicality. We’ve seen his kind here before; hit-and-run-poster types.

He obviously doesn’t know that the non-biz guys here are the less than 1% of the car buying public that don’t need his guidance, book or not. The sales guys here surely don’t need his advice so, as the tires turn this guy will make a right turn out of here.

Now, for your comment about getting into my check book:

Haven’t I said several times here already that I’m not allowed to play with the family check book because I screwed it up royally at the 6 month point of our marriage? I know that’s a sure way to be writing left handed thereafter, so I don’t do it. However, the check writer may be writing a check sooner than you think. :surprise: :):D

Oh come on its entertaining. If this guy wants to write a book about his 10 years in the business, who are we to stand in the way.

    I don't know if this book will be a bestselller but I have worked in the book publishing (mostly sales) business for over 35 years and I think;
*Lots of people have a dream that they are writing the best book the world has ever seen.
*It will be a miracle if the book actually gets published. There are lots of hoops to get through, the first is you need a very good agent.
*Although the writers think their book is revolutionary and new, I am 100% sure it has been done many times before.
*Not that many people will read a book about buying cars, and how is it going to help you. It might make you paranoid, but does it help you negotiate a better deal?

I don't think the post should be pulled. He's just expressing opinions from his way of seeing the world. It isn't a nice way to view the world and I don't think you can be successful in sales if you are so negative - people do see through that.

One more thing about books that everyone will want to read. So many people tell me they are writing a book about their life story. I think to myself, I know your life story and believe me - it isn't that interesting. At parties I sometimes feel like saying I am a street sweeper so they won't tell me thay have a book they want published that the world is dying for.

They even have a special chapel there at the dealership for people to go to when they need to "pray about it". They mention this helps close about 50 extra sales a month.

Not a bad idea! You could mention it if you have an idea box at work. Management might love the idea.

Maybe a confession area for the sales staff! ;)

The fact of the matter is what truly goes on behind the "curtain" in any industry is well done behind the curtain for a reason. I've worked at grocery stores and restaurants and man, I've seen things that would make you thank your maker there is Health Department out there....

We all do what we do to make money. As Gordon Gecko stated - Greed is Good. Even Milton Freidman expounded on the importance of Greed. Just nobody admits to being greedy - it's always the other guy who is greedy.

Boom, Isell, Moo they are not giving cars away at the dealership. Their job is to get the highest price for any vehicle on the lot. To maximize the dealer's profit and theirs as well. No one should begrudge or fault them for this.

I somewhat agree with the poster...any salesman's job is to make a sale. Call it a sale or call it prying money from your checkbook. Does that mean they have to lie and be deceitful, absolutely not.

Just left the Honda dealership to get my oil changed. Saw my sales person while I was waiting.

Things turned to business. He said new car sales were dismal over the past 4-5 months. He also state that used car sales were doing well. And, that if weren't for used cars, he'd have left the store.

This is a guy who's been at this Honda store for many years.

He was optimistic for this month. As I've always felt, he said customers are a little more upbeat about the economy turning around. Perception, as they say, is sometimes reality.

I have never owned a minivan but have taken several golf trips with friends in theirs (with me doing a lot of the driving) and IMO they beat any suv hands down. They drive better, get better mileage, are more stable and have more usable space.

I would love for my wife to have one but she insists on driving a big suv. I will admit that they are kind of boring but IMO the minivan is one of the best all around vehicles out there.

Thanks for your input guys. I think our biggest obstacle with the oddy is with the captains chairs in the second row. Which limits seating capacity to 7. I think the newer models have that strange "attachment" which allows for 3 people to sit in the middle row.

I think the Ody 2010 model is a redesign. So we shall see what they have to offer. I have looked at he Sienna's before, but the Ody always seemed to have the most storage capacity.

And Boom, I have always teased my wife that we are one kid away from getting a church bus!!!
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
How many you got? Maybe I should look into buses...

The Ody won again for us a couple of years ago because of the storage space. I've taken 6 of us up to Ontario with enough camping equipment, various toys (including my guitar) and such and make it fine every time. If I had any other van I'd have to cut back what's there.

I read it (the deleted posts) and I agree with the poster.

He was trying to come clean and reveal the truth about the relationship of sales people to consumers.

I can't believe it got deleted. It was the most revealing and informative piece I have seen in a long time. And no it wasn't from the 70s. It was from today.

So now what do we have left? Informative sales articles deleted, religious beliefs replacing sales stories. Oh joy.

"Seemed" is the key... Sienna actually "has" more room for both luggage (+4.8 cu. ft) and passengers (+8.2 cu. ft). And it has available full 8-passenger seating that I love. I'd like to see how the new redesigns stack up in 2010. I personally can't wait for the hybrid Sienna.

That was an opinion of one salesperson who was trying to group and generalize all auto salespeople as sleazy, disrespectful, and conniving, while trying to present himself as a good guy because he came clean, all while promoting his upcoming book.

If you want to get an insight of what goes on behind the scenes of some dealerships, read Confessions of a Salesperon or of a Finance Manager on this very site. Very informative articles even for us sales people.

So now what do we have left? Informative sales articles deleted, religious beliefs replacing sales stories. Oh joy.

I think the religious beliefs was a sales story because this was a very prosperous car dealer who happens to be extremely religious, but he does have high ethical standards, which makes him very successful in the car business. Someone might learn or want to comment on his way of doing business.

Your friend who is writing the book is a very negative loser who thinks he is telling everyone something new. Those books have been written over and over again, and it is of very limited appeal. There is some truth to what he says but it isn't all true.

I think the "oh joy" comment means you find the conversation boring. I used to tell my daughter, if she said she was bored......."Only boring people get bored" There's places to go, libraries to browse through, great books to read, movies to watch, places to walk to, friends to visit and talk to, games to be played, newspapers to read, day trips to take,......if you are bored it's up to you to change it.

There are all kinds of people owning dealership. This was 30 years ago.The strangest dealer or salesman i ever met was when some relatives had received by phone the best price on a new car from the owner of a Ford dealership in West Memphis across the river from Memphis. I was invited to go with the relatives to buy the car . They were ready to sign a contract when the dealership owner told them he would not sell the car at the price he quoted on the phone. "I lied, so what " was his only explanation. Of course, they bought the car the next day at another dealership. Anyone here ever run into dealership owners like that one.

I now see where four of you disagreed with my request to delete the post regarding the hatred of customers and the unethical tactics used by automobile salesmen. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, as I am also. We live in a wonderful country where freedom of speech and freedom of the press are precious guarantees to the "pursuit of happiness".

These guarantees are extended to each of us unless we abuse the privilege. They are not guaranteed when their sole purpose is to incite or harm the standing beliefs, traditions, morals, or ethics of a majority populace. I like to think that this thread on Edmunds is open to those who enjoy the exchange of ideas and opinions which are not shared in order to lump a single group into a negative entity.

It is easier than you think to get a book published. I have friends who have accomplished this many times. To keep a long standing professorship at a university, you must be published from time to time. That doesn't mean that their books are necessarily interesting, informative, or worthy. It simply means that they found a small publishing house, often unknown, to bind their manuscript between two hard covers. The books may or may not be sold in university book stores and in small local book shops. If I wish to purchase a book, I will. I do not, however, wish to have a book thrust upon me against my will.

Over the centuries, particularly during the 19th and 20th centuries, we have heard people express ideas as being "entertaining", "fun", and "informative". Over time, those ideas expressed in the written and oral word began to translate into certain actions and negative reactions. Finally, there was a group injured or a group that became the scape goat for individuals with ulterior motives. Whether a neighborhood, a country, or just a blog, the damage was done. The effects were long lasting and far reaching. It all began with a small seed.

I have kept coming to Edmunds for education, enlightenment, and understanding. The distance learning friendships became an added benefit. I don't wish for any soul cleansing, corrupt, unethical, profit minded individual to destroy what has been achieved on this thread. During the last year, we have lost two of our old friends because a "flash in the pan" poster was allowed to stay on here too long. I don't want us to lose any more. I applaud the decision made by the Hosts today. I realize that it may have been a tough call, but it was a call that needed to be made for all of us.

I didn't see the post, but am getting the drift.

Freedom of speech is a right except when Edmunds in paying the bill. When it's their servers and they are providing the service, it's also their call. If they wanted to remove it, it's fine with me.

I hosted chat rooms for MSN for many years and that is probably the single one thing that was hardest to get people to understand.

It is easier than you think to get a book published.

Especially easy these days with digital printing. At one time you had to print 5,000 books to make it worthwhile to cover plate costs. Now you can print 50 books for a reasonable cost.

The only thing I do have to give credit to the ex-poster for is that he wrote a very neat and fairly articulate post, with proper headlines and spacing and underlining, and he must have spent a fair amount of time preparing it.

Richard, I think you should grade him an F for content but a B+ for spelling and punctuation..

Basically, I do agree that his rant serves no real purpose. Those who can sell are good long lasting sales people (and the sales people here are good caring professionals), those who can't sell become hack writers of C grade books.

Noted that myself. Keep your Regal chugging along. I always thought that the Regal was Buick's "bread and butter". Kind of wish they'd bring back the Riviera, too.

I have a neighbor who has a supercharged Regal. 12 years old. Runs like a top with 140K miles on it. Still looks good, too. Outside of routine maintenance, it's been trouble free.

As expected in the reliability survey, Suzuki brought up the rear. Mercedes is still holding onto it's "worse than average reliability", as it has for the last several years.

Several salesmen here have said the same thing about Edmunds, "Confessions of a Car Salesman". While I thought the article was fairly well balanced, the title and introductory promos (i.e "learn the dealership tricks") from Edmunds lead one to believe all salesmen have sinned... otherwise why would they need to be confessing?

Perhaps this dudes book is the same way. Sensationalize the title and the introduction to get the readers/buyers... then offer a more balanced view

When we bought the '03 Ody at that time, it was the only van which had the cavernous "well" behind the 3rd row for storage.

We rented a suburban while we were in disney a few years ago and we fit 7 people, our luggage, car seats and a stroller... I was amazed at the generous space. But is it worth the additional 10-15K in cost and the lower gas mileage? *shrugs*

We are on our 2nd Ody, and it would be nice to get some variety, but this has been a great car, so another part of me is why change?
