I agree with you about selling to friends---and relatives. Whether it's cars or other items, I learned a long time ago that selling to strangers is much better. Friends and relatives will get mad and sulk if the item doesn't meet their total expectations. It is not worth it trying to be nice and selling it to them. Also, they expect a big discount, "since we are such good friends and all". Pleeeaaassseee!

You should have simply told him...

" There are a lot of these out there in your price range and they are priced that way for a reason"

" Average ones probably sell for that. Mine isn't average, wouldn't you agree?"

isell....that's why you're good at what you do. Too bad I didn't get this info until now. I will use it in the future, however.

Regarding low mileage Gran Marguis......you can find them without much trouble. The people who seem to like them, don't drive them much. Not to insult the "older generation", but the buyers of these cars really do seem to only drive them sparingly. They don't like driving at night. Most don't like driving far distances, either.

I had a co-worker who managed to find a 15+ year old GM with less than 50K on it. Initially she had trouble with it as age can hurt a car just as much as mileage. I think she had something go bad on the tranny due to age and something broke in or on the engine (rusted I think she said). But after she got those things fixed the car ran great.

I agree with you about GM owners not wanting to drive at night or for long distances. That makes me wonder something. Is it really good not to drive a car much? It looks to me like the fluids and motor parts wouldn't work as well together to keep the car in good mechanical condition. Hope that thought makes sense.

Grounding your son for a week without TV turned out to be a very good thing. Look at the quality time that you two had together. Also, the outside exercise was much better for him. Sounds like that he might enjoy some Dick and Jane books. :D Isn't my underlining pretty? ;)

Wholesalers do it all the time LOL.

We call them and ask for a bid, they call someone else then call us back and offer $xxxx less then the buy bid they have.
  • sterlingdogsterlingdog Member Posts: 6,984
I would love to have heard the conversation between the lady and her "friend" when she saw the car in the yard with a sign on it. I would have been tempted to call the cops, but then she did give him permission to take it. You mentioned the trust factor with friends. I can assure you that family can be worse. We currently have an attorney after one of our close relatives who tried to "steal" money from an estate left to my wife. People never cease to amaze me. The crazy thing is that he got the same amount of money. He just wanted more!

First, before I forget, Yes Richard, your underlining is coming along beautifully and we will give you a gold star. I also like your idea of the kids reading Dick and Jane - the world would be a better place if more kids did that.

It is my understanding (i am not a technophobe, but I do have aquaintences with some knowledge on this topic) that it is probably better to buy a car with higher mileage, rather than extremely low mileage. A low mileage car doesn't get out on the highway enough to burn up water and bad deposits in the engine. Things like brakes are more worn than say a car that does mostly highway miles. Highway miles are easier on the car than city stop and go driving. Some items like tires deteriorate with time, and are actually unsafe after about 10 years - they deteriorate from the inside out so you won't even see it.

It is probably better to buy a higher mileage highway car than a very low city car driven by a little old lady. It's just an opinion and makes sense to me......so don't start writing angry replies.......sensible alternate opinions are acceptable

You are now on an underlining spree Richard.

Richard, I was not at all aware of the Dick & Jane books. I guess it was more of an American thing than British. They certainly look good on the preview that is available on Amazon. I am going to get some for my kid. Which one do you think is good for KG-1st grade reading?

Back in 1982, a close friend's parents bought a new Dodge Rampage pickup.

In case nobody remembers, they were basically a Omni made into an almost worthless tiny pickup.

But, I thought it was kinda cool so when about six years ago, I learned the old man was selling it, I bought it and I had it shipped from California to our home.

It had 22,000 miles on it and it had been fairly well taken care of. It had received oil changes, a tune up and even a new timing belt. It still had the original tires which were as hard as a rock.

The original silver paint had dulled and the hood was really bad. Of course, not a speck of rust being from So. Calif.

Age had taken a toll. After replacing the tires, it blew a rear wheel cylinder and the nylon bushing in the shift linkage had to be replaced along with some dried out gaskets.

After getting an estimate for a decent paint job (3500.00) I decided I really didn't want to keep the thing. It ran well but the years had taken a toll.

I think I lost about 1500.00 along the way.

I kinda wish I had it back. It was a nifty little truck in it's own way.

Not really. If we take a paid off car in trade, we have a clean title before it hits the lot. If there is a payoff, we confirm the amount with the bank and overnight a check. It may actually sell before we get the title but we know a clear title is on the way. We legally have 30 days to produce a clean title or all the deals back out. Never had that happen.

I remember those...kind of a Ranchero but an Omni Ranchero.

That is a real lesson there. You would think with only 22,000 miles on it there would be some good miles left. Forgot about the deterioration of hoses and gaskets too.

What a mess, but that would make a cute little truck. One of our emplyees had an Omni and he said it was a great little car.

Nope the bank holds a secured interest in the cars but they do not own them and do not have any rights to the cars unless the dealership defaults.

Yeah, but you're ruining a great sounding theory....

I would think it's similar to the fact that technically I own my house but the bank has a pretty good interest in it as well.

Well you don't "technically" own your house, you legally own the house in every way shape and form. You have all the rights and responsibility of ownership. The bank, or an agent of the bank, cannot enter your house without your permission and would have to leave the property if you asked. They have zero ownership rights.

The only way for the bank to get your house is through foreclosure which is a legal process.

Anyway, sorry for ruining the "great sounding theory".

Well lets put it this way, as long as the dealership stays within the financing contract the dealership can keep, sell, use, giveaway, crush into a cube, toss off a cliff, set fire to, etc the vehicle. And as long as the dealership stays within the financing contract the bank can't touch the cars (outside the terms of the contract).

Actually that was a very nice little truck. Not even a door ding.

Those were the days when metallic paint jobs dulled and it was as dull as a sidewalk.

But it ran well and I'm sure would have gone many more miles.

I basically got tired of it and I sold it to a Delta Airlines Pilot.
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
Actually good business practice (which we do) is to floor plan new and own used outright. If you see the list of failed dealers, most of them floor planned everything..

I'm sure that I speak for Driver when I say that we are thrilled that you want to try this series. The very first one that you need is: Dick and Jane, We Look. Look inside the back cover of that book and you will see a list of the books in developmental order. Allow your son to move from one to the other, and reward him after he perfects each book. Go ahead and buy these two when you order the first book: Read With Dick and Jane: Go,Go,Go and All Aboard Reading (Station Stop 1) Dick and Jane-Go Away Spot. You can get these three in a package for $11.97 plus shipping and tax.

Be SURE to follow the order suggested in the back cover of the first book. Not only will your son enjoy reading the books, he'll get a history lesson of sorts on how American culture has changed over the years. I can promise you that your money will be well spent. If you need more help, Driver is also here for you.

To jmonroe: Now it is my turn to show my enthusiasm. I'm really excited about this! ;)

To stay on topic for Isell and the Hosts: It is very likely that trucks will be involved in the delivery of these books. Also, nice cars will appear in the books. :D

    Got it.

It will be nice when they have nothing at all to do with the house which will be soon enough. Not like I have to worry about foreclosure. I'm the ideal customer for the bank. All they see from me are nice payments predictable as the sunrise.

Driver is also here for you.

Yes, if I can help just ask. If a person can read well, many doors can be opened in life. Also, you should never be alone and you should never be bored. Watching TV or movies can be pleasant, but doesn't give the mind as much enjoyment as reading the book. Watching too much TV makes your mind turn into Jello.

I have probably read about 500 books in the last 20 years. When I ask people what their favorite book of all time is, most say Pillars of the Eart by Ken Follett. I kept putting off reading it for over 6 years because it is almost 1000 pages long. I just finished it and I have to agree, it is the best book I have ever read. It takes place in England in the 1100s and although it is fiction, it is based on what life was like then....and unless you were connected to the ruler, life was pretty rough. Follett wrote the book 25 years ago and his publishers thought it wouldn't sell because it wasn't a spy story which he is known for, but it is his best selling book and probably one of the top sellers of all time.

I have started the sequel, World Without End, and it follows the family members 200 years later. It will be my 2nd favorite book of all time.

Just to stay on topic, they didn't have car dealerships back then. But, they did have apprenticeships, start of unions, builders making great buildings including churches, the capacity to build bridges, etc.

Richards directions for getting into Dick and Jane were excellent. I am not so sure about Dean and Jean.

I still have 300 pages to go for World so don't tell me how it ends. These books would make great movies.

Since we distribute actual real books I have a slight bias against Kindle. I know they are incredible, you can store about 1500 books in your kindle which is the size of a paperback. That would really help on a trip. You don't have to tell me your age but you are probably closer to 30 because the older generation still seems to like the feel of a book. The children growing up now will be using Kindles and the only place they'll see a real book is in a library. I don't mind in a way, I just like people to enjoy reading.

It sounds like newspapers will be next. Of course, more people are reading on line. But they have a kindle like device, and you will go over to the computer in the morning and download your newspaper. It will still be like holding a newspaper and it will be portable. Think of all the paper it will save, and the gas and delivery trucks, and the rooms filled with presses, and the jobs that will go.

I'm not trying to be a spoil sport. I'm just trying to keep this topic from getting shut down as so many others have as inane banter takes over. Some of you are driving away the lurkers who come here for " Sales Stories" The sales people tire of this too and they disappear.

And, it's nut "Bunny Day". It's EASTER and I hope all of you have a good one with your families.

    The grinch who stole Easter!

Probably what makes this place so lively is that we can go off topic a bit, but we always come back. The hosts have been very kind and wise in allowing this. If we only did car sales 24/7 we would have died a long time ago. I have seen posts and there is one person with a message every 3 or 4 months. It would be great to have more car stories, if anyone should have them it should be you. I only buy a car every 3 or 4 years, so I guess I wouldn't be able to contribute much. I am sorry if we are offending any lurkers, but I don't know how much they are going to contribute because of the lack of car stories.

If you want to get back on topic just write in something interesting. We're just tredding water here waiting.

I agree. When the stories have been told, the story tellers have been jumped on and ridiculed in the past.

Not many of us story tellers left.

Or is it storytellers? I'm sure someone will correct me.

I think the lurkers here have been given a free pass long enough. I've heard that the lurkers far out number the ones that come here with sales tales (I have no proof of this but it sounds right). So, I say that if a few of the regulars here have bought cars within the last month, there must be plenty of stories out there that the lurkers are sitting on.

What do you say LURKERS, ain't it about time that you come out of hiding and contribute? Hosts, if they continue hiding, I want their dues increased.
