I wonder if the price will come down as much as everything else. Our large screen TV cost $4000 5 years ago, a better one costs about $1200 today.

What's the age requirement for the grumpy old men division in here?
It is different: $350/month (w/ $3000 cash or trade down), because generally down payment used to be expected (and probably will be again). But to say blantly YOU PAY X, and then in small print it's really X+Y... I get worked up almost every time I see that kind of dishonesty.

I've put in enough years for a pension and if I didn't still have young kids I'd be collecting already. I'm under 4 years until hitting 62. I think at that point SS and a pension is about right. I'll practice being grumpy so I'm ready.
I have a friend who has been a grumpy old man since he was 14....
These days in terms of coverage it's good to be a Mets fan - Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez are a great team. Right up there with when they used to have Lindsey Nelson, Bob Murphy and Ralph Kiner.

Me, that's another story.....
Bald Men Walking. Perfect!
I took my wife's car into my own dealership that I work at just to get the brakes checked. We have a $9.95 inspection special. Her car is an 04 Civic with about 35k miles.
They came back with $700+ of work that was recommended (where's the icon for me rolling my eyes at the service advisor).
The brakes, which I was concerned about the most were still fine. Some other items they pointed out were nice to know, but not necessary, although "recommended". The service advisor that helped me was new so I told him thanks, as long as the brakes are good we'll be fine for now.

Are you at a Hyundai dealership?
In any case, you better watch the ad all the way through, I don't think you will be offering the same guarranties.

I have never heard of a car needing any brake work at 35k. I usually go 60k before they have to do anything. I have gone as much as 80k and the shoes had to be replaced, not because they were worn......but they were glazed....became hard with age.
What I don't like about these deals is that who knows what they might do to your car to make sure you need something done. They aren't going to let you go after using their garage and time - for 10 bucks.
I just read an article that says no one gets rich from trying to save money on something. People who get rich know that something has value and they are willing to pay for that value. Trying to save 100 bucks on your brakes isn't going to work, paying $200 for a proper brake job if you need it is going to work out much better.

Since Sundays and holidays are causal days for us, and I don't take floor ups (I just do internet leads etc), and had no appointments, I came in dressed super casually.
This meant I wore baggy jeans, 135 degrees sideways rotated baseball cap, a t-shirt with this ugly rappers face on it throwing money and diamonds around (my younger sister bought it for me, really
Anyways I usually do dress for my age except when I feel I'm getting too old, I gotta rejuvinate myself by dressing "young". :shades:
So Friday was a short day, only 3 sales guys were here, and lo and behold we had a lot of customers in the showroom. I had to help out the floor guys, but I needed to put on my jacket first to hide the ugly rapper t-shirt as not to scare some customers away, and rotate my baseball cap back to normal.
I ran into a younger couple who thought it was "cool" that we can be so casual, and I ended up selling them a car after a couple hours of working with them. Maybe they felt more comfortable with dealing someone who can relate more to them, I don't know.
The second car was sold over the phone as I took a deposit from a referral on a specific unit.
Not a bad day, especially when I planned to stay at home.
On another topic with the you pay $XXXX with $4000 trade, and $2000 down. I agree those ads are pretty misleading.
We never advertised that way, but I do have my way of advertising payments, and they're all with $1000 down, but I always point it out in normal sized font.
For me one of my "successes" at the current dealership is my marketing, and I figured out that payment and price ads work much much better than price only ads. Most people finance anyways, and all they're worred about is how much payment they can afford. I don't hide the price, nor do I put it in small print, but the payment will always be more noticeable in the ad.

Kept the volvo until 71 when I traded it in on a new impala custom coup.Married by then. Beige with brown vinyl roof. Loved that car. Fast Ed Shoenthaler at a dealership outside of Chicago ripped me a new one on that deal.
That is very fair. Since many people want to know how much monthly payments are and because $1000 down is reasonable. As long as you don't put the 96 months in really small letters.
We don't get the really outragious ads in Canada. I think there are more laws against that, and probably most people would really balk at an ad that is too far out.
When we were looking at cars the Nissan guys had nice golf shirts with logos on it. When I got my last Jeep they wore something similar. I kind of like it that car people aren't too formal. At bmw. merceds, audi they wear ties and jackets. Just don't wear those jeans where half of your behind is showing. Saw a lady eating at a restaurant and I had to look at that (at least if she was attractive it would have been ok).

How do u know whether a requested service has been done or not?For example-- whether the auto transmission/coolant/brake flushes were done or not? If the tranny fluid was clear before ,how would I know that the new flush was done?Same for coolant or brake flushes?
Should the customer just assume that they were done
I would not be able to tell whether it was done or not.For me it is good faith and belief.
But is there any way to confirm??
The minute oil change places let you watch from a distance. But they rip you off too quite often. Changing fluids way before necessary and adding extras you don't need.
A good garage is pretty good, but often is hard to find. I think most new car dealerships and the larger chains are pretty reliable as far as really doing the work, but I am sure there are a lot who cheat. In Ontario they have to give you back the old parts when they replace parts, but who knows what they are actually giving you...and who's going to take back old parts any way. Guess you have to be less suspicious.

A guy at work showed me this a few weeks ago after learning I got a new car. He wanted to know if mine could do this, since he heard so many good things about it.

I remember hiding my transistor radio under the covers in bed iand listening to Vin Scully. Hard to believe he is STILL THERE! I heard he only does home games now. No better announcer anywhere!
I did sell Rick Rizzs the announcer for the Mariners a car once.
Just go to a dealer or a shop with a good reputation and you'll be fine.
Cmon Captain. Are you trying to say paper work has never been "doctored"? Rather than looking at a RO I'd want to see the real deal, like the new parts and fluids before they are installed.
Then again if you can't trust the place where you go for service, it would be better to go elsewhere.
I have a tale about what just happened to me on Friday when I took the 05' XG 350 in for PA state inspection but I have to go do my PA state taxes before time runs out. So I'll tell that tale later.

I prefer to drop off the vehicle even for an oil change as it takes about an hour an they have a shuttle service.
But do they sometimes skip service -- say the tranny fluid was good and so no flush was needed-- hence charge for it but not perform- as the customer would not be able to tell as the fluid is clear ??
I believe that dealers would not risk something this trivial for a very small gain.
Also,,I never understand why people go to independent mechanics/chain stores for service and maint.?Dealer prices are competitive [ Labor rate 90 vs 55 /hr] plus cars are so complex nowadays,I believe, the regular mechanic cannot handle them especially with all those TSB`s
Plus I would be very wary of those iffy jube chains. :shades: Who knows what happens there?? :confuse:
The work order can be written but the service not performed as everything was fine!!Hence charge but dont perform.
I do hope that these occur very rarely.
What say folks??
No, but I am saying that the VAST VAST VAST majority of repair shops and dealers are honest - especially in service departments. Do you always feel dealers are by the majority (that is the way it comes across) out to screw you at every turn of the road? I even know of many dealers who sales tactics are unethical (not illegal - but unethical) who have great service departments.
My Mazda dealership had on my sales reciept that they had put in 10w-30 oil in during an oil change. I questioned them why didn't they put in 5w-20 like they were suppose to. The service writer said it was a computer misprint, or something similar b.s sounding. So, don't think just because you are taking your car to a dealership they can't screw something up.
We would chalk mark the inside of certain tires to ensure they were being rotated. We had some sort of wax thing that was impressed on the oil pan drain valve. Which allowed us to check if in fact it had been drained.
Under the hood, a form of Teflon tape was put over certain caps (washer fluid, brake fluid) If the cap was removed the tape would break.
Some of it was obvious. For all we know, they just opened the caps, but the message was clear we were at least checking them.
One violation - and we no longer used that shop. Most often the violation was charging us for a tire rotation that was not done.
