Well scoot99 is the winner. You MUST be in Neutral with your foot on the brake to switch into and out of 4WD/L. Any other position including Park does NOT work. Going between 2WD & 4WD/H can be done on the fly.

My old 4Runner never required this so I wasn't expecting Neutral. I did try park but.... :-)Oh well, I need more RTFM.

I just picked up my ST last night and I love it! I purchased the Toreador Red with dark graphite interior, 4x4, convenience group, cloth comfort, sport package, 6 disc changer, moon roof, and cargo cage (which will be installed in about 3 days when it comes in). So far, no leaks with the moonroof - it's been raining all day. I've already noticed a big difference from my '97 Explorer Sport - much, much smoother and quieter ride. I've also noticed a lot more looks from people passing by, but that will change soon when there's more ST's on the road. I kind of like the attention! Anyone considering the 6 disc changer option should definitely get it. It sells for about $480 more aftermarket. Also, purchased the 5yr, 100,000 mile extended warranty because of the Explorer transmission horror stories I've heard and my high mileage driving habits. If you get one, negotiate! I got it for $500 off, which brought it to $25 over cost. If anyone in the Northeast Ohio area is looking for a great deal and a great dealership, I highly recommend Jason Thoenen at Clarke Ford in Hudson, OH. He also gives a good kickback for referrals - you can find my name on my profile (hint, hint! :) Has anyone seen any decent accessories for the ST yet outside of the internet?

I'm interested in any available info on the 5 speed manual transmission that I've heard will be offered late this year. Does anyone have info re: affect on sticker price; availability date; any affect on towing capacity and other performance ratings?
  • struderstruder Member Posts: 6
Took delivery of red 4x4 with cloth/convience grp/performance pkg in March. Installed Ford soft tonneau, bed matt, molded splash guards and aftermarket Hidden Hitch class III trailer hitch. Great vehicle getting about 18mpg and have had no problems and have received chairs, knife and keychain from Ford. Also received nice print from dealer.

Go over to www.blueovalnews.com. Click on future vehicles and then scroll down to the Sport Trac. 2001.

The article says that according to inside sources, that Ford is having significant problems with this tranny, which might delay or even kill the program.

By the way, Blue Oval News generally seems to be a good source of inside Ford info.

How much time elapsed between the time you placed your order and when you received the VIN? I am closing in on two weeks and was curious as to when they would call me with the VIN. Also, I live 4 miles from the Sport Trac assembly plant and was wondering how long it is taking the surrounding cities to get their orders. Any info would be appreciated.

Ordered mine 3/8/00 . With the top installed by factory.

    *****Wondering about Jimz2 post******

Who told you the top would come with the vehical when delivered? What facts did he have that I can't seem to get out here in Vegas?

    ****Interested in post of jpfeiffer******

Your Dad works at ford building the Sporty! Hey how about asking him if and when the sporty will be delivered with the tonneau top.
  • beard1beard1 Member Posts: 15
thanks for the update studer. i have checked with all the dealers in our area and they can locate the info on the soft tonneau, based upon the part number i got from you, selling at around $200, but know nothing else about it. can you or anyone else with the soft tonneau explain how it is installed and held onto the bed.

btw, i've got a red sport trac on order. is the red as good looking as it show in print?
  • tl565tl565 Member Posts: 78
Yes, the Red on the ST looks great. I've seen a couple, you will be happy with your color choice.
  • jimz2jimz2 Member Posts: 44
    Lasvegan,

My dealer insists that my ST's build date with the hard tonneau cover is June 5th. Skepticism of my dealer's date is on the rise based on posts from yourself, ltlbgdg & jsully about your dealer's comments. I'll have him to recheck the numbers tomorrow.

    jss7,
Ford's Web specs have the following comment:
"4.0L SOHC engine w/5-speed manual O/D transmission (late availability)(becomes standard powertrain when available and automatic transmission is optional)"
Ford's towing rating chart typically lists significantly lower weights for current vehicles with manual trans. Some manual transmissions (2000 Explorer) are only available with the base engine. At the same time, larger engines & 4 wheel drive can lower ratings due to increased vehicle weight.
Acceleration: Car & Driver, March 2000 speculates that the manual trans should cut "at least a half-second" off the 8.5 to 9.3 sec 0-60 times they measured.

I waited about 4 weeks before the dealer sent me the VIN. However, once you have the order number, you can call Ford customer service and track everything yourself - get VIN, build date and ship-to-dealer date. As these items become available, Ford can tell you over the phone. My time-line was: placed order w/ dealer on Mar 29; Ford received order on Mar 30 (I had dealer send me a copy of the order form to verified order date and options); received VIN from dealer ~Apr 21; received build date of May 22 on ~May 2; and ship-to date of 6 June on May 19.

Can anyone give me a part # for the soft tonneau cover from Ford?
  • struderstruder Member Posts: 6
Cover is fastened to aluminum frame that is first assembled and then fastened to inside of bed by means of 4 turn buckles that attach to tie-downs located in bed. Cover is equipped with straps that can be used to hold cover when it is rolled up, so that you can haul taller items.

I purchased my SportTrac about 2 weeks ago. Had one on order for a while but another dealer was able to find what I wanted and also at a fair price. Got the Toreador Red with dark graphite
interior, 4x4, convenience group, leather comfort,
sport package, 6 disc changer and moon roof. So far no problems including no leaks with the moonroof. Open the roof and put the back window down eliminates the need for A/C except on extremely hot days. Only down side is the gas mileage, which has been between 15 - 16. Don't know if it is because of the 4:10 rear end or not.

I have noticed that various people talk about getting free gifts from Ford, such as chairs, etc. How do you get these? I am also interested in getting a receiver type hitch, what type is best for this truck? I ordered a AVS Bud Shield II deflector for the front. It had to be special ordered due to the new front end design.
  • jimz2jimz2 Member Posts: 44
Ford Customer service just gave me a revised build date of June 12~19 with the hard tonneau cover (first time the date is from them & not the dealer). I asked specifically about the tonneau & the rep had no additional info other than to say "If it's part of your package, the build date should include it."
    I'm keeping my finger's crossed....
  • litowerlitower Member Posts: 5
Anyone heard any more on the Boston Acoustics sound system that will supposedly become an option? Thanks.
  • tl565tl565 Member Posts: 78
Free gifts??? ...... not sure how Ford determines who to send these free gifts to, but it might be for those who register their new vehicle with Ford's web site, ownerconnection.com...it's worth a try.

To update...I ordered a Dark Wedgewood with grafite int. 4x2, Premium sport group, convenience group, cargo cage on May 10, Just two weeks ago, was roaming around in here and decided to try my luck--sure enough I got a VIN number--was so excited...Now I know somewhere in the old posts there is a phone number to customer service to help me track my trac...but can someone out there save me a little time. Also, is that the best place to get the build date and delivery date from or is the dealer better. Our dealer has been on the mark so far. They do not put dealer logos on truck...just give you a license plate bracket. Also where do I pick up an accessories catalog or does it come with the trac. And last of all, am I the only one out here that is wondering why the ST says Explorer on it....why not Explorer ST or just ST? What's up with that? It's not just and Explorer. Anyway..will appreciate the help. Thanks

deciding2: Good point about Ford not calling the new Sport Trac an Explorer ST or just ST. But then again, this is only the beginning. As for the 800# question; no, it isn't the best place to get your information. Your dealer is going to be. I did; however, call the 800# 4 weeks into the process and then every week thereafter just because I wanted updated information. On the other hand, of the 6 or 8 times I called, I was only fortunate enough to speak with 2 "real" people at Ford who did not read a script and who spoke to me like people not robots, "I'm sorry, but I'm not authorized to say anything but, I'm sorry Ford production is slow, blah, blah, blah..." I think you should call customer service once a week if that will make you happy. I'm typically very anxious and impatient so any information I get is helpful. Folks, it's like sitting on a plane on the runway and the pilot doesn't inform the passengers as to what the hold up is. That's about how similar this entire waiting process has been with Ford. The not-knowing part is difficult (for us control freaks!). We like to be updated and at the very least to know that there is progress on a weekly basis. We just want to know how the process works! Good luck to all!

The Explorer is a line of SUVs that comes in a variety of configurations. The regular 4 door SUV that has been out for 10 years, the 2 door Sport and now the hybrid 4 door truck (Sport Trac). In early 2001 a new 4 door Explorer will come out that has similar front end styling to the ST.
So basically, the Explorer name is the umbrella that the regular, Sport, and Sport Trac fall under. They are all built on the same platform and at the same factory.
  • deciding2deciding2 Member Posts: 24
Dolphins66--Thanks for the advice--I am also an impatient, anxious person who likes to know what's going on and will probably do as you did. I've been reading your input. good luck with getting your ST today...please follow up with a complete update of what you ordered--when you got your VIN, build date and delivery date and how your ride home was.

tl565--I understand what your saying about the same platform, but at the same time doesnt the Explorer say: Explorer XL or XLT, and the Explorer Sport says Sport? So even thought they are under the same umbrella they say what they are. Not to argue...was just wondering. Thanks.

Hey ST Fans out there ....
Picked up my red 4x2 last night and it really is a nice combination ... had not seen the gray leather until then and it's a nice darker shade. I need your advice on some things...
1)Does anyone remember the information on how to order a bike rack? Or the receiver type hitch?
    2) I had purchase a "Club" for the ST .. but my salesman says it's a waste of $$ with the anti-theft device that's installed on the key. What do you think?
    3) Bummer ... on the upgraded package you don't get the nylon/removable fanny pack insert.
    4) Noticed only two minor defects .. one paint "spit" in a door well and the other is a loose piece of molding which the dealer can fix later.
As always, thanks for your collective wisdom and wit. Good day!

deciding2: We ordered the 4X2 Toreador Red, Power Moonroof, Premium Sports Group, Convenience Group, 6 in-dash CD, Leather Comfort Group, Cargo Cage and Limited Slip Rear Axle w/ 4.10. We plan on waiting on the tonneau cover to see if they or anyone else will manufacture one to match the vehicle color. The sales guy (who has been wonderful)offered it at 3% over invoice and my husband talked him down to 2% which we felt was a fair deal. Plus we got the 4.10 limited slip rear axle at no charge for some reason.
We got our VIN# and build date on 4/13. The build date was between May 8-15. Delivery was estimated May 22-May 31. I called yesterday and it is due to arrive today and we will pick it up tomorrow afternoon.
  • dolphins66dolphins66 Member Posts: 78
Actually, I just realized that the 4.10 limited slip rear axle come wth the Premium Sports Group so naturally, we paid for it in that group.
  • jcaustinjcaustin Member Posts: 22
The Premium Sports Package includes the 4.10 axle but it not anti-slip, the anti-slip option is $302 (invoice price). Tell more about your ST when you get it.
  • jcroachjcroach Member Posts: 7
I'm seriously planning on ordering a new ST. What can the board tell me about the two different rear end ratios (pro and con), and also the anti-slip option. I do not plan on "off-roading", but will be moving in about 2 years to an area where snow and "chain laws" prevail.

    thx, jcr
  • jcaustinjcaustin Member Posts: 22
My understanding is : better gas mileage with 3.?, but if you want Premium Sport Package with 16" wheels the 4.10 is required. anti-slip will help if you are in a muddy area or any place where there is a chance that one wheel might not be able to get traction.

There are a handful of bike racks available for receiver hitches. I've had 3 years of reliable service from my "Xport" rack available from www.performancebike.com
They come in two, three & four bike units & break down to a $50 per bike cost.
Hidden Hitch, one distribution source link is: http://www.truckaddons.com/Catalog/ford/FordSUVMain.htm

    jcroach,
In a turn, the limited slip differential allows the outside wheels to compensate for the additional distance they travel compared to the inside wheels. Therefore translates to better handling in corners.

    Axle Ratios:
Curiosity got the better of me about the axle ratios & tire size factor in the equation.
    Std P235/75R15 Tires net a 90.72" circumference.
Sport Group Tires P255/70R16 net 94.42" cir.
This increased tire distance per revolution with the 4.10 axle translates to an effective 3.93 axle final ratio with relation to the 3.73 axle/15" tire combination.
With equal tires, RPMs at a given speed & gear for the 4.10 axle would be about 10% higher than the 3.73. The tire size factor for these two cases cuts the difference to about 5%.

Anyone know how to disable the securilock in an ST? I would like an easier way than to install a PATS Module(transponder) under my dash. My vehicle is at the dealer. They said it doesn't remember the keys. When I get it back I want to make sure this never happens again. Is there an way to get a Ford Service Manual or similar product now? I know it will take Haynes and Chiltons a while to come out with one.

For those considering a cargo bar for their truck bed, consider the save-a-load cargo bar. Check it out at:

    www.saveaload.com

The silver bar can be a stand alone cargo bar to secure items in the bed. You can also attach bike carrier adapters and wheel adapters to it, and it effectively becomes a bike bar/rack. I went to a local dealer and ended up saving $25 from the prices listed on the website. At the end, you pay less than the bike bar offered through the Ford Outfitter accessories catalog, and you get more.

I had the opportunity to use it a couple of times, and I must say that it's an innovative tool. It'll also come in handy when I move in a few weeks. Check it out.
  • tl565tl565 Member Posts: 78
actually limited slip transfer power to the wheel that is not slipping. Without it, if one rear wheel get stuck in the mud and spins, your vehicle will not move. With limited slip the other wheel will power the vehicle if it has traction.

The vehicle will be more stable too when driving on wet roads, will be less likely to fish tail when accelerating from a stop of around a corner.

Limites Slip is a MUST HAVE option, even for people in sunny climates who never drive off road.
  • beard1beard1 Member Posts: 15
i keep seeing info about items in ford outfitter catalog but the people at local dealers look at you with a blank stare when you ask them about it. the web site is pretty lame. anyone tell me how to get one?
  • rschfamilyrschfamily Member Posts: 19
Zack1000 ... many thanks for your feedback. I understand the concept of the special key ... I just wonder if the lunkhead that's thinking about breaking into my car will know that the ST has that special feature. I agree that the Club is overkill ... but wonder if it's presence might serve as a visual deterrent.
Everyone have a great weekend and thanks again.

I called Ford Customer Service to order an outfitter catalog over three weeks ago and have not received one yet. I gave up on Ford and so I am going to order a Sunflector for the rear window to prevent water from running in off of the roof and a Bugflector from Auto Ventshade http://www.ventshade.com/ I am tired of dealing with Ford's lack of customer service, especially the parts department at my local dealership. I got the same blank stare reaction as beard1 wrote about in the post above. I'd rather try my luck with after market products.

    I agree with ZACK1000.

I also commented about this in earlier posting re: my 2001 Sport (not an ST).

'Pathetic' is a good description of this wacko idea.

I've had my ST 4x2 for a week now. No problems with it, love the ride and versatility of the seating/compartments/bed etc. Also love the 6 disc in dash changer.

The most interesting thing is how many people stare at it. I drove thru a supermarket parking lot and a guy stopped dead in his tracks, stared at the vehicle while I passed him, then turned around and watched me drive away. He was stopped for about a minute staring at the ST before he started walking again..

Then, on the freeway I guy in the passenger seat of a BMW 3 series, did a double take as he cam along side me, then cranked his head all the way around and stared out the back window at the ST.

Yes I could only Dream that my build date was 5/6-12. When it is actually 6/6-12. OOOPS!

After filling out the survey Ford sends, they called me to talk. I had problems with the moon roof leaking and had to take it to the dealer 3 times. I let them know this and they want to talk to me about it. Sounds like they care?

To fix the roof the dealer struggled with the 4 drain hoses that leave the moon roof. They ended up putting hose clamps on the tubes, so they would not leak. So far so good!

I'll let everyone know what they tell me, if it's interesting.

I got my catalog in the box with the director's chairs. That doesn't help a lot of you, so that's why I've been posting the part #'s for various items. Hopefully you can take the part number to the Ford dealer and they'll be able to look it up in their computers. Especially since they don't see to have these catalogs either.

I ordered my 4x2 with sport performance group and convenience package and the cargo cage on April 7 and as of today I still don't have a build date or VIN number. 2 weeks ago the dealer told me the cargo cage was holding up production. Now today he tells me that the sport performance package is the hold up. Yeah right!! I have read all the posts and have seen all the people who have gotten their ST's and they have performance packages on them. Then he tells me that they are only allocated 2 orders a week but that mine is on the top now. Why didn't he tell me in the beginning? It does pay to go to a larger dealer because there allocation each week is bigger. My lease runs out on my current vehicle the end of July and now I am wondering if the ST will be built even by then. SOOOO FRUSTRATED!!! Thanks for being my sounding board.

I can totally relate to your frustration. Ordered my 4x4, Wedgewood blue/tan leather, all options except block heater & tonneau on 4/3. No build date as of yesterday. On top of that, I was told by Ford CAC and my dealer that there are some transportation delays--even if the truck was built, it could take a couple of weeks to get from KY to CO.

Thanks to the web, I found the same truck at a larger dealer across town (black exterior instead of blue--okay with me). So I went to my dealer and asked him to do a dealer trade for it. After some back-and-forth about pricing (we did the original deal at invoice and he said he didn't get the holdback on a dealer trade--don't know if that's b.s. or not), he agreed. I'm paying an extra $500 (well, my company is) to do the deal this way--invoice + $500 still seems pretty good and since the money isn't out of my pocket... I pick it up later today--can't wait!

Advice: I called my dealer and Ford weekly beginning in May. It's easy for them to throw their hands up and tell you to be patient over the phone. When I stopped by the dealership yesterday and engaged my salesman and his manager in person (keeping them from new customers), the conversation was totally different. I'm not sure you have to view the dealer as the "enemy" as noted in earlier posts, but it doesn't hurt to show you face once in a while (or just once).

Thanks for everyone's input for the past couple of months--I feel like I've been in a support group. (Step one is admitting you want a SportTrac!)

Yesterday afternoon my husband and picked up our toreador red, 4X2, all options but the tonneau, 4.10 LS and engine block heater (we live in SC, what the heck would we need that for?!). The dealer filled up the gas tank (FREE). We just love it. We live about 35-45 minutes from the dealer and I was following my husband home in our 1995 Explorer Expedition when he pulled off into a parking lot, jumped out and said, "Get in." So, we switched vehicles and I drove it. What a fantastic ride! Didn't look to see if anyone was gawking because I was too selfish and interested in driving and enjoying the ST. I'm not too interested in impressing other people so I could care less if people look or not. One person we showed it to said, "Cute." I told her you don't want to say that in front of my husband. So my husband's fun response to that was, "It's ruggedly handsome." Very good description!
In any case, there were a couple of disappointments, although quite understandable since the ST is truly an athletic vehicle. We had read in several places that when the the leather group is ordered you also get 6-way power passenger seats. Don't ask me where we saw that but we both saw it. We are used to having all the bells and whistles since our current '95 Explorer has everything. The autolamps would be a nice feature as well as double cup holders in the front. I realize that the ash tray (that we don't use) can be used for that. A lighted mirror would also be nice although this isn't a luxury SUV. A few other nitpicky things could have been better BUT, the vehicle is STILL FANTASTIC! It will be interesting to see what Ford engineers do for the ST in the future. I'm just the kind of person who will even attempt to criticize perfection so I'm rather particular. A pain in $#@!(?! might be a more accurate description! All in all, the vehicle will serve it's purpose well for hauling our beach gear, fishing gear, plants from the nursery, 4 adults comfortably, maybe a kid or two(hmmm??), and perhaps a boat not too far in future. Once again, Ford did a fantastic job engineering this vehicle. I have to give kudos to our sales guy who was very patient and most PLEASANT during this entire process. We could have purchased the vehicle from another dealer at $98 over invoice; however, we had dealt with their service dept. on many ocassions and were too often disappointed. So, we stuck with our original contact and paid only 2% over invoice which we felt was a VERY fair deal for all parties involved. FYI, anyone living in Charleston, SC and are interested in any Ford vehicle, call MIKE ROOT at JONES FORD in North Charleston. He is truly a genuine person who lacks those attributes that most people can't stand in a car sales person. I've gone on long enough about this silly vehicle ;-) Good luck to the rest of you with your purchases! It will be worth the wait and who really cares how long you have to wait if you really like what you've ordered?
