Well, I have a 2007 and my tech says that occasionally filling up with 89 is fine, especially if you can't find one that has 91 when you need it. Also, I've been using an additive that actually does work. My average MPG has increased by 10%. The stuff is kind of expensive, but doing the math, especially with gas as expensive as it is today, absolutely saves me a ton of money. I have no stock or anything in this company, I just use it, but you can get it here - link title
On my first five tanks of gas since purchasing my 2008 FWD CX-7 last month, the MPG has ranged from a low of 21.2 (70%/30% city/highway) to a high of 27.4 (all highway). I've been using 87 octane regular with 10 percent ethanol, with no discernable performance problems. The dealer's service rep indicated they were told by Mazda that regular was OK to use in the 2008s. So far, the MPG and the car overall has exceeded my expectations and I have not had any problems at all.
More power to you. You are getting excellent milage. I have the GTFWD 07 which was purchased in Oct. 06. I have almost 11,000 miles. Last year before I took it to the dealer to upgrade the chip to help the 6 speed transmission shift better, I was making 25mpg over all.
Since then, my in town milage has drop to 16-17mpg and overall on a 1835 mile trip I made 22.45mpg. I will say that on at least 3 tanks I made over 25mpg and one tank over 26mpg. but this was on Interstate level hwy in AR. and LA.
I do mix my fill ups. I will put any major brand of 89-93 octane. I also use an gas additive every once in a while. We love the car and it performs very well. It is a lot of fun too drive and very sporty on the back roads.
93octane Shell is back up to $4.05 per gallon, I have paid as high as $4.86per gallon which was totally unacceptable.
My 07 AWD is beyond disappointing in the MPG dept., I have never gotten more than 275 miles from a full tank (17.5 gal) and I typically average 220 - 235 per tank. This puts me in the under 15mpg dept with consistency. My driving habits have varied from light to hard with no real difference in mileage, although I once even only got 190 from a tank full.
I had the PCM reflashed during last service back in 12/07 or so. None the less, the mileage is pitiful and I am considering rolling out of this gas hog next year. Too bad, for I truly enjoy ALL the other aspects of this vehicle, perhaps a Murano will be my next ride.
You might want your dealer check your PCM again. I kept having problems of the transmission hanging up in 5th gear when it should have been in 6th gear. That computer setting can be adjusted.
Also, have you tried to drive with the manual shift side, that is even more fun. I got better gas milage in town, but you cant dog it. Too many high rmp's in lower gear settings burns a lot more gas.
It took three trips for them to get it right, it might work for you.
I am really trying to not bring the tach over 3k for a tank full (hard to do) , about 100 miles of hwy on this tankful if I dont break 300 miles I will continue to be disappointed with the MPG
Tuesday means Mazda chat night! Mazda ownership is not a requirement! Just bring yourself and your love of cars and the desire to discuss anything and everything automotive and you're good to go!

We just purchsed our CX-7 two months ago and we love it. I just figured mileage with the last two tanks. The first time it was 15.927, and the last time it was 16.62. The last one may not be entirely accurate because the tank was topped off. So far, I believe that the economy will be better than our previous crossover, which was a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica FWD.
I don't have any qualms with the CX-7 at all...well built, sporty, powerful.
I do plan to install a cold-air intake within a couple months. From the reviews I've read it will make the turbo sound more noticeable. Mazda put a rather restrictive air-box on the CX-7 and it diminshes that satisfying turbo sound.
07' AWD ---at freeway speeds 70+ received 25.9 MPG. Using 91 premium. Would suggest having front end alligned, added 2+ mpg afterwards. Also, keep tire pressure 35~37 psi. replace air filter, change oil every 3~4000 miles.
I bought a 2012 CX-7 2.5L in early September, 40k miles on it. My wife has been driving it around town (mostly suburbs) and getting low-20s mpg, which didn't surprise me as that's what she's gotten with her last two mid-sized sedans. When I drive it, I get from mid-20s to low 30s, with the low 30s on urban freeways with light traffic.
Today my wife and I took our first longer trip in the CX-7, a 220-mile round trip in nearly ideal weather conditions (dry, upper 50s, light winds), flat to rolling terrain, just the two of us in the car. Overall mpg was 31.3, which included driving around town at our destination for about half an hour and some urban streets on either end. Speed limits on the highways ranged from 50 to 65 (which I stayed within 2-3 mph of), and there were several slow-downs for towns.
Given the nearly 10 year old design (with no direct injection and only a 5AT), I'm happy with the fuel economy so far. It's only about 10% less than what we got on my wife's previous car, a 2013 Sonata with direct injection and a 6AT, and less weight.
