From what I have read, the XF is available to order now... depending on market. The first cars will be delivered to customers in March 2008.

Strange sometimes, as I remember some weekends with a day in massive mountainous snow and a sunny day at the beach.

It was like that for me when I lived on the Big Island in Hawaii. You would be on the beach in Kona and could look up at a snow capped mountain. Feels strange... but cool at the same time. :shades:

That's absolutely wonderful. We have something special in common. Quite a few years ago I lived in Maui. I owned a glorious piece of property with two houses on Keawekapu Beach!!... incredible experience beyond words, but for unknown reasons three years was the limit for me... now I just visit. Of course now I wish I hadn't sold it... as it's value later soared to between 10 and 15 million and some of the celebs bought a few of the houses on that beach! (Trust me... I have subsequently installed a personal [non-permissible content removed]-kicking machine in my garage as proper self-punishment... which I use from time to time as a reminder of my stupidity... LOL... as I've really never forgiven myself. )

Anyway, I island hopped over to the Big Island now and then when the volcano was erupting... I'd check out the lava flows... very eerie but special. Very few sandy beaches on the Big Island, but on one trip I did manage to find a small beach that was sensational, and the waves were perfect that day. BTW, I just noticed $203 airfare to fly there this morning, but I also noticed it was available on only select and poor dates... our supply/demand system at work.

    :)

Yes, I know that. Jaguar was referring to the wood on the doors, though; those slabs look like something out of a Bentley.

Other than that... to me, it looks like an A8 interior, backwards, with less wood and more aluminum.

I'm originally from Lewiston, Maine. So yep, by default, I'm a New Englander. And Ortiz, Riddick, Schilling, among all of the others are my fav. in baseball if you get my drift.... ;)

It's interesting that you'd bring this up. Upon my retirement, the wife and I are seriously thinking about buying a nice piece of property in Vermont so that we'd be closer to both of our fams, with hers in New Hampshire and mine scattered throughout Mass, Vermont, and Maine.

I lived in Hilo on the Big Island for almost a year, and then Honolulu for another 2.5 yrs. I lived in the only condo high rise in Hilo at the time, located right on the edge of the Island. I could walk out onto the lanai and throw a rock into the Pacific. But the first time we had an earthquake and the building started moving, I nearly died! Scared the crap out of me... but got used to it in time. The Big Island has some very interesting beaches... green sand, black sand and white sandy beaches, and a few nude beached as well. You have to know where they are. Honolulu was a lot of fun as well (away from the tourist traps). I owned a motorcycle at the time and would get up early, through my camera in a bag and ride the entire Island. Man those were the days! I too was ready to leave when I did. I enjoy visiting, but doubt I would ever want to live there again. Island life is something everyone should experience once in their lives, then when it is time to get serious again make it back to the mainland and enjoy an organized society again (LOL). :shades:

Yeah, THAT's the truth alright, and well-said. It's something that has to be lived to be understood. Those sure were good times. :shades:

Has anyone seen an official options or accessories list? How does anyone know how to equip it? Perhaps some of the dealerships already have this info.

As a follow-up to my own question, I have checked the Jaguar website... seems to be enough information in the "XF brochure", but the XF "build-your-own" is still under construction, as it seems non-functional so far.

A Maniac, eh? I spent a few years skiing, summering and calling on the Pulp and Paper mills in Maine.

I've always considered myself a New Englander and believe Vermont is just heaven on earth. I had thoughts of second/retirement home there. But, after marriage I'm told that is no longer my dream. A second/retirement home in NH on Winnipesaukee is my new dream. Thanks for clearing that up, dear! Avid skier, met the Evil Wife in lovely Ludlow (well, Cavendish to be precise. A 'burb of Ludlow :shades: ). Burlington, Mad River Glen, Weston Playhouse, The Equinox, Champy, Route 100, I'm getting misty here...

I'm the opposite-ish. Born in Nueva York, grew up in Fairfield County a die hard Mets fan and Yankees hater (some things never change). Moved to Boston area as the taxes in CT were too low, I just had too much money. The Sox (and Pats) are like a disease, I caught it early and hard. My father/brother still can't believe I'm a Sox fan now. The only constant is change. Still a Mets fan, just so consumed by the Sox and until recently their almost mythical levels of futility (Little's leaving Pedro in??? No!!!!!). All is forgiven x 2!

I've resigned myself to buying snow tires mounted on a set of alloys for the TL. The new Toyos just stink in the snow. First time I've ever felt the "need" for snows on a FWD car that I've owned. A Christmas present to myself, I guess. Tire Rack, here I come...

Happy/Merry to all the good folks here!

The plug-in capability would be best to be included, but not a requirement to use.

You're hundred percent correct. Only problem is Toyota is persistently repeating how they are going to cut the hybrid premium in half. How will they do that with a "plug in" which involves more expensive batteries/ and hybrid components?

If there is going to be a first "plug in" or a lithium ion equipped vehicle I think it will be in a Lexus where hybrid premiums are not such a big issue as with Toyotas.

But so far my guess is in no way better than yours. ;)

Today I parked my BMW 335i(with snow tires ofcourse) behind my wife's AWD 530xi touring and to my dismay I cant move my car from the driveway in order to get access to my wife's very snow affective BMW wagon. I tried going on the road (unshovelled as of now) but ended up having my good Samaritan neighbor shoving my car back on the driveway.

The one particular day when the AWD BMW wagon is most useful is the very same day I parked behind my wife's car . Wonderful timing

What, you forgot to watch the weather? :shades:

I'm just kidding - it's just that I would LOVE to have that kind of snow, to tell you the truth. I know that if I lived somewhere (which clearly I don't!) that got a lot of snow, I'd get just as sick of it as others do, but I don't, and I absolutely love the very rare snow events we get. And I do mean rare here in southeastern Virginia - a bit south for much opportunity and too close to the ocean for those few opportunities to materialize into anything but cold, drizzly rain.

Hope you get can get the wagon out tomorrow. :)

I was very young when I visited there for a family vacation, but if my memory serves me, I seem to recall some of the most strikingly beautiful beaches over there. True? :)

The winter's snow never bothers me as much as the winter's outside temperatures. When it gets anything below about 20 degrees, and when you add that horrible wind chill, THAT's where I draw the line. I would probably take a "warm" snow compared to a clear 15 degree day. Now, when you go to Dewey's part of the world, and get BOTH the snow AND the 15 degrees wind chill, or colder... I'm afraid I'd never venture outside... Instead, I'd find the Irish coffees in a hurry. ;)

The Equinox is one of our favorites resorts, we try to do a golf weekend there every year. The Porsche Club had a weekend run there last May, it was great. As you and Hemi know our weather can be a challenge, yesterday was a complete mess as I was going to the Pats game. Luckily my Quattro handled the mess well but many others without good cars or tires caused problems. The traffic to the game was so bad that I was going to turn around and head home but I had to host some people at the game. The normal 25 minute drive took 1.5 hours.

Good luck with the new tires. I think you'll need them this year.

Wow, I am just glad that I've never lived in anywhere close to the snow belt (first Atlanta, then short sting in Melbourne, FL and now in the sunny So Cal). I guess that's another reason why I've never come to appreciate Audi or their awesome Quattro system.

RWD all the way, oh and I hope it'll stay that way...

I have just used www.bmwusa.com to build a 135i to my liking and it came out to be $42,725. The options I selected are:

    Montego Blue Metallic $475
    Black Boston Leather $0
    Glacier Silver Aluminum Trim $0
    Premium Package $3,300
    Sport Package $1,000
    • M Sports leather steering wheel with paddle shifters
    $100
    STEPTRONIC automatic transmission $1,275
    Comfort Access system $500
    iPod and USB adapter $400

$43K for a baby Bimmer!? Come on...

At this rate I am afraid that the next top end 3-series will carry a MSRP of over $40K will be hard to find one for less than $45K. :surprise:

Thats quite a bit considering a premium/tech/sport/NAV (basically everything) equipped G35 tops out at $40K.

Due to the Euro, I think everything imported from there will be pricey for the forseeable future.

Loaded at $43K is pushing it, but I think it's still worth it. I really like the 1-series!

Tag, that's the problem, at $43K the car isn't even loaded yet.

I really like the 1-series as well, if instead of $43K, with the options that I like, it is around $36K and comes with 4 doors then I would be seriously thinking about trading in my IS350 for a 135i.

    Oh, by the way:

Loaded 135i: $47,700 (w/o HD and satellite radio)

Here are the spy shot for the GLK and artist's rendering for the E-class (I think it should be fairly accurate to the final production model that it'll be debut in September '08):

The GLK looks just like a baby GL, not bad, but for some reason, the blocky style works better on the GL than the GLK IMO. The E-class just simply looks stunning!!

I can't see your pic on my mobile, but I've seen the GLK photos. From what I saw, it will be a class leader. The preview write-up said that it's got one of Mercede's best interiors, borrowing some cues from the new C-class, but even better. I'll be taking a very close look at the GLK diesel and possibly an X3 diesel, if available, as well as the generic-looking Tiguan diesel.

I also plan on checking out the new 1-series and the new XF.

My take on the 1-series pricing is that as long as it stays under $50K, loaded, it will be OK... but it "feels" about $7K - $10K over it's sweet spot (when loaded).

  • louisweilouiswei Member Posts: 3,715
Oh, believe me, I have no doubt in my mind that the 1-series will sell and sell well. It probably would still sell if it's over $50K, loaded, just because it is a BMW. I am less confident about the hideous X6 on the other hand but if I am a betting man, I am not betting against BMW right now.

As much as I hate to admit, the G35 is looking better than ever right now...
  • houdini1houdini1 Member Posts: 8,356
For some reason the GLK doesn't look as good to me as some of the earlier pics/mock-ups did.

The problem with all these small suvs is that they all look a little too "cutesy" for my taste. Like they were made to appeal to women. The only thing of interest to me is the diesel possibility that some are offering.

    $50,000. for a BMW 1-series? Yeah, right!!

Tag, you are right. Winter (cold weather) sans snow is depressing. While I don't like shovelling it, I don't mind driving in it (since I've been doing it all my life) and I love looking at it, especially from atop the mountains in Vermont! Snow/cold ain't that hard to deal with, just dress properly! Which I guess goes for my car, too...!

I have never skied all my life but would love to try it. As matter of fact, me and my buddies are thinking about planning a ski trip to Lake Tahoe early next year.

To be honest, if I have a choice I would avoid living in snow belt at all cost. First, I am not used to very cold weather (born in Taiwan and grew up in Southeast). Second, I would hate to shovel snows and last but not least, I don't like the idea of having to factor in the weather in my car buying equation.

RWD all the way, oh and I hope it'll stay that way...

During winters I always make vows that I will never ever drive a RWD car again. But by spring I always end up forgetting that vow and my love for RWD is seasonally renewed.

It is not mere coincidence that my wife got her AWD BMW during winter and I usually buy my RWD cars during summer/autumn.

Thank the four ladies from Sex and the City for this very early sneak peek of the Mercedes-Benz GLK, Stuttgart's new compact CUV that wasn't supposed to be seen in public until the Geneva Motor Show in March. The vehicle's being used in the upcoming Sex and the City movie and was snapped completely free of camo on an open set.

The GLK becoming a product placement for the new Sex and the City Movie. ? :lemon:

I wonder if a black MB RL was used as a product placement for "Six Feet Under" :confuse:

Suzuki car product placements are beginning to look far more classier than those from MB.

    Cool, if you do ski:

    Dress properly, layers!
Properly fitting boots is the most important piece of equipment.
Know that you will fall a lot initially. Try not to fight the falls...
Have fun! Take a lesson or two...

Sure, driving a great car at high speeds through the twisties is fun, but what a rush bashing through the bumps, jumpin' the stumps or just bombing down the steeps with nothing between you and Ma Nature! Not to mention clean, fresh mountain air. And Snow Bunnies :D

Hmm, since you mentioned clean, fresh mountain air... actually I've just got back from Sequoia and Yosemite during Thanksgiving weekend (and Napa Valley too, which is my favorite part of the trip). I was so disappointed that we didn't take my IS for that trip because those roads are just perfect for any sport-oriented cars. Instead we took my buddy's beater Accord and in many occasions we were left in dust by cars like Mini Cooper S and Subaru Impreza WRX.

On the second thought, if we did take my car, the poor [non-permissible content removed] in the back seat will be very uncomfortable given that all 3 of us are over 6 feet tall.

The problem with all these small suvs is that they all look a little too "cutesy" for my taste.

I think that cutesy look sometimes just seems to go with "small" in general, not as a rule, but very often. The X3 is no exception, but the latest version can be made to look sportier, IMO. The upcoming Tiguan is generic, but coming off a very sporty concept, so it's a bit disappointing if you were expecting the concept's look. The GLK is chiseled more than most, especially when viewed at certain angles, so I find it the most masculine of the "cute" small SUVs so far. I think cool wheels will make a difference, and even the color will make a difference. The Infiniti small SUVs look too "inflated" or "blown-up" like a balloon for my taste.

I tried the Toyota FJ Cruiser for a while, but ultimately that vehicle is a freak, and there is no way around it... so while it may not be cutesy, it is indeed a freak, and it's gone!

The article mentions TWO diesels for the GLK... a four and a V6. I was only aware of the BT V6, so the 4-banger must be the one they've referred to in their concepts. Could be very nice, if it has enough guts.

From my perspective, if the GLK has the interior that's as nice as the preview mentioned, and if it has a nice diesel engine as well as offering a nice driving experience, then it's looks are more than good-enough for me from what I've seen so far... and if the ladies seem to like it... well... that's OK with me, cause they sure seem to like my Porsche, too... and quite frankly, that doesn't seem to bother me at all. ;)

That's a very nice trip! And while nice any time of year, Napa Valley in the middle of Spring is like the "Hidden Valley" commercial... almost too beautiful to be true. But, even better, you need to go there and do some serious wine tasting, if you haven't done so already. Careful driving when wine-tasting, of course. A designated driver can help, but no one ever wants to volunteer (I wonder why), so you can probably forget that! Some of the vineyards are just incredible and some of their wines even better. One of my favorite wines is from Silver Oak... their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is awesome... and almost always reliable, like a Lexus... LOL. Which begs the question, does CR rate wines, too? ;)(please don't answer, I'm just kidding.)

Of course we did some wine tasting while at Napa Valley, how can one not to do so while there? Fortunately one of my buddies doesn't drink so that worked out great for me and the other one. I brought 8 bottles back with me (5 red, 3 white) and I am planning on bringing 4 bottles with me back to Atlanta during Christmas.

We only went to 3 vineyards, Rutherford Grove is my favorite, their Petite Sirah is just simply amazing. I can't wait to go back!

A Porsche Hybrid? Dream on for a few more years.

Porsche representatives were pro-hybrid at the recent LA Auto Show, promoting the message that the company's hybrids will go 75 MPH on battery power alone. The news since then has been a little more tepid. Today, Automotive News (subs req'd) is saying that Porsche's skepticism about hybrid sales means that the release of the Cayenne hybrid has been pushed back to 2010. One Porsche manager told ANE's partner Automobilwoche that "Though there is still no decision on the planned introduction date of the hybrid version of our Cayenne SUV, I'm sure we'll only introduce the new system with the start of the next SUV generation in 2010." The possibility that Porsche hybrids in the U.S. is "also apparently smaller than initially thought," ANE writer Henning Krogh says, so all of you waiting for a hybrid Panamera can keep on waiting until 2011 (at least).

Wow, now ain't that a coincedence? I went to the Pats game yesterday in my Quattro yesterday just as well, in fact, I am still at my best friends house here in Wellesley!!

Even with 20" performance all-season, low-profile rubber and 450hp at your beckoning call, I still for the love of it could not break my W-12 loose, even just for a quick 360. The Quattro is so stupifyingly grippy that it's a wonder Audi doesn't license it out to other makes, much like Volvo-subsidiary does with it's less sophisticated, but still pretty good Haldex unit. I started to drive the S8 coming up here, but that's a whole nother story. I just got it back Stanley's, and they've tuned this car to 653hp(0-60 in 3.9 secs, if you've got grip :P ), so that was a no go.

But anyway, can we say GO PATS!!!!!! I will always be a Giant @ heart, but a Patriot for the love of the game.

Hemi - If you want a great breakfast or casual lunch in Wellesley go to Capt. Marden's on Linden st, your friends probably know the place, best seafood west of Boston.

My A8 is only a lowly 4.2 but it has been a great car. I am now trying to decide if I am getting another one or something else as my lease expires 60 days from today. If I wasn't afraid of my wife I would just get the S8 but she'll make me pay for having that much enjoyment, let me know your secret to keeping yours off your back.

The vineyard at Silver Oak was being rebuilt this year, apparently a fire burnt out their facilities. The wine didn't suffer though!

Like you say, very reliable. You should try also Jessup Cellars and Reynolds winery. Small producers with limited runs that you can only buy in Napa.

In an effort to legitimize this post ;) I have been following up on all those mentions of the depreciation hits that Jags take. I have found an XJ8 LWB with under 20k miles for $29k. That seems too good to pass up. Can anyone give me a reason not to do it?
  • tagmantagman Member Posts: 8,441
What year? I'm guessing '04? Equipment? Color? Check the car out just as thoroughly as if it cost $10K more... IOW, don't let the price make you lose your edge. You still need to do your due diligence.

Sounds like you might have done well enough to easily flip it if you end up not liking it enough. OTOH, if you really do like it, that's a heck of a price for a car of that stature. The LWB is very smooth. Good luck.

I think the biggest qualifier right now is that I haven't actually driven the car. It is an '05, British Racing Green, has 28k miles, $29,950, non-nav, has heated seats (front & back), cream leather interior.

For that price it seems like it's almost too good to pass up.

My only concern is that I put 20 - 25k miles on every year and whether it will end up being me that takes a bath on the resale? Also that question of Jag repair cost, I am reasonably confident on the improvement in reliablility, just concerned about the cost if there is a problem.

When I build the equivalent (obviously almost 3 years younger) it MSRPs at $69,950.">

Awww, you're killing me! With 17" luxury/performance all-season low profile rubber and 258hp at my beckoning call I couldn't make it up my semi-steep driveway with only 3-4" snow! I have placed my order for Dunlop Wintersport M3 tires (minus size) mounted/balanced on a set of silver alloy wheels. After 30+ years of driving, my first set of snow tires! I hope they fit the S5 (probably-ish), XF (we'll see-ish) or XK (less probably-ish) that will replace/join the TL in 2-3 years!

Indeed, go Pats! Hope next Sunday is a clear day. Brady and Moss can each break their respective touchdow records against the Fish! Would be such a shame if Ma Nature prevented 'em from getting their records...

Plan to be at Gillette tomorrow to donate blood. No doubt the best Xmas gift I will give. And not a bad St. Patty's Day, Fourth of July and Columbus Day gift either! Not to mention a few of the Pats Cheerleaders will be there. Yowza!

Err, wrong... in Chicago, we actually get snow, and I'd be more than happy to give it to you. Today it felt like it was below zero ºF. Coldest day of the year, by far. And it's only going downhill from here...

Try living in the Northeast or Midwest! Their climates are strikingly similar...

I started to drive the S8 coming up here, but that's a whole nother story. I just got it back Stanley's, and they've tuned this car to 653hp(0-60 in 3.9 secs, if you've got grip ), so that was a no go.

    I want your S8.

Or at least, I want an S8. I saw a 2008 model in Phantom Black, and I was just blown away. Stunning! Beautiful! Best-looking luxobarge this side of a Quattroporte! And with a Lamborghini engine instead of a Ferrari's... madness.

I want a lot of cars, actually, as you guys have probably realized. The S8 is still on my to-drive list...

British Racing Green? SOLD! That will look good enough to justify the $30K alone!

    What rims?

I think the biggest qualifier right now is that I haven't actually driven the car. It is an '05, British Racing Green, has 28k miles, $29,950, non-nav, has heated seats (front & back), cream leather interior.

Make sure you take it for a drive, but to me that sounds like a great deal. '05 is probably the best year to get, any quirks from the initial model year should've been worked out. As with any used car have it thoroughly checked to make sure everything is on the up and up, but Jag quality has gotten to the point now where I don't think you'll have any issues. I'd take a used '05 Jag over a used '05 Mercedes any day of the week, thats for sure. As for depreciation, its still going to lose money, but it wont be anything like that initial hit. '03 XJ8s are still pulling in almost $20K, and they have bones that date back to the '86 XJ40 series.
