That's a damn expensive sticker Tim - about $300 bucks!

Ryan - I was referring to Trade-in value, so $25k for a 2000 is about right for now.

I've got 11 months left on my 99 lease, but I want a HD Crew now! Not likely with its current trade in value. I think its less than my lease-end buyout already. Oh well, I guess at least I'll get to see the Avalanche debut before my next transaction. I'm not as hot on it anymore as I was about 6 months ago. I'm leaning toward the HD now.

The sticker is actually $9.80. I know i had to buy a new one (well ok insurance did) when i got my truck fixed

most people don't even know there is a package behind that sticker - lol
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I think that any sticker except one that gets you free beer cheapens the product. If the Z71 was made out of gold, heck, even cheap GM plastic, I would consider keeping it on the truck. The way it is...should be removed before the sun removes it for you and leaves a nice shadow. However, I guess some people need it like a baby needs a pacifier.....LMAO!!

    its like a security blanket

LEAVE ME ALONE I LIKE THE STICKER DAMMIT

you don't need it....then the truth comes out...from the horses' mouth!

you would have to take a 4x4 off cuz it wasn't a Z71.....am I right or am I right?

A Happy Thanksgiving guys & gals, you too ryan. You all should rename this forum " Pick on Ryan "
Ryan you may think you will change down the road about not wanting a good looking truck, let me tell you from experience, no matter how old you get, you will always want a good lookin ride no matter what type of rig you choose in the future.
Look at Tim, he's out spit shinning his truck now
for Turkey day. As for your Z71 sticker, does that mean since you got extra skid plates your a Big Bad Off-Road machine now? Have a safe Turkey Day. You chevy boys provide good entertainment, even though it's at ryan's expense.......

I,m about to order a 2001, 2500 HD, 6.0L 2 WD, 4.10 ratio, Sierra ExC. and I'm wondering if anyone out there can give me the benefit of their experience towing with this truck combination.
I plan on towing approx. an 8,000 lb 5th wheel and I want to have enough power to pull in the California high sierra mountains and in the Canadian Rockies without putting too much strain on the engine and tranny.
I know I can upgrade to the 8.1 and have power to spare but I think it would be overkill in my situation plus I would be getting poor gas mileage for my solo driving.
Any advice you could throw my way would be appreciated.

#533.....shine it ain't right now....cobered in salt..mud...road grime...and what ever else may be hanging from the wheel wells after going thru the barn yard.....

    Gimme a break ace...

touch - I also always get the shop manuals however am considering only the body & electrical ones this time as I have yet to really get much good from the engine/trany manual.
(currently have '90F150 4x4 bought new - Not going to sell it till the new one's on the Car Carrier :-)

I'd like to know the manual #'s- assume their GM??
Need to tell dealer to get them on order and see if they beat the truck.

We're not expecting our unit until January also-- If By Then?? Production for the 8.1 is ramping from 1% build of total units out of the Pontiac plant to 30% so maybe both will build befor March at the worst.

Think I'll replace the Fstones w/Michelin 265 AT/LTX's like Roger350 recently did. He's working with Fstone to get $100 per tire on customer satisfaction policy (or lack of) stated on their web site.

By the way- you can call that 800# I posted yourself to watch for the TPW soon as they assign.
Most seem to call once or twice a week.

What's your color In/Out?? Indigo Blu/Graphite here--Gona get rid of the Blk wheel flairs however. (Sorry Ryan :-)!!

Z71 is some sort of OFF ROAD pakage i think - Someone -Probalbly Ryan - will straighten this explanation out before this ink is dry.....

Learned something from one of the other post-Don't remember who but thanks- on the LOCKING DIFF. - I assumed it was just positraction of old but guess it actually locks both wheels when one starts to slip. Think this is right.

In central Iowa - Watch for you after Monday--

    Woolyback2,
I was concerned about tow capacity for the HD as well. The 8.1 is appealing but it may be a bit on the thirsty side. The December 2000 issue of Trailer Life lists the tow rating for a 6.0 2wd, XC, sb, w/4.10 at 10,400 lbs. Probably enough for your needs. Similar vehicle with an 8.1 but w/3.73 is listed at 12,000 lbs.
  • loyalgmcguyloyalgmcguy Member Posts: 64
Z71 is the order code for the off-road package. Available for most 1500 series models, it offers 265 tires, skid plates, HD/offroad shocks, and a delete on the front air dam.
  • woolyback2woolyback2 Member Posts: 21
    Thanks loyalgmcguy,
I did see those tow ratings, I also read an article in the Aug. issue of trailer life where they did a review on the 6.0 and also the Oct. issue where they test drove the new 8.1 pulling a 10,060lbs. trailer. I compared the Fuel consumption and it was as follows:
    8.1 Towing = 7.9mpg Solo = 12.2mpg

    6.0 Towing = 8.4mpg Solo = 14.6mpg
Only 0.5mpg difference with the towing.

I figured if I got the 8.1 I might pick up an extra mile per gal. seeing that I woudn't be working the engine as much with the lighter towing weight.

As you can see I'm trying to talk myself into getting the 8.1. It's a big truck though, i measured from the ground to the bottom of the tailgate and it was 36 inches. I compared it to my 1500 Sierra 2000 and the difference was 4.5 inches. This might create a problem leveling my 5th wheel so will have to see how much adjustment i have with the hitch and the king pin on the 5th wheel. That might be the deciding factor on which truck to buy.
    Decisions - decisions !!!

    loyalgmcguy,
forgot to mention the 8.1 was using a 4.10 axle ratio so my mileage would probably be better with a 3.73.

Your truck looks great, did you have to reprogram the computer?
  • mth1mth1 Member Posts: 12
Your truck looks great. I'm a little disappointed
that the 305's will not work. What brand of tires are you using? If you take a Goodyear 305 and a BFG 285 the tread width looks about the same but the widest point (sidewall bulge) is about 3/4 of an inch wider on the 305.
  • loyalgmcguyloyalgmcguy Member Posts: 64
    Woolyback2,
You bring out a good point. If the mileage penalty from a 6.0 to an 8.1 is 1.5 to 2 mpg, why not benefit from the power and towing capacity of the larger motor plus the Allison. Now I'm reconsidering my order. (Assuming it's ever built). Hmmm.... Sure could use some advise from the current 6.0 and 8.1 owners. P.S. I'm afraid to ask you what color you plan to order.
  • 4x44x4 Member Posts: 114
I drive to work about 45 miles one way everyday....the 6.0 has almost given 14MPG driving city...i doubt the 8.1 would give me 14 or even 12 really...

FourWheeler magazine gave a report on the 8.1 in mixed driving and for the damx in the same..8.1 got 9.1 MPG and the DMAX got 15.8MPG..

mth1 I was also dissapointed that the 305's would fit.. I really wanted the 305 and 16x10 combo but it just won't happen...305's will fit on stock wheels though..i saw one, i guess since the stock wheel is onlt 6.5 wide it doesn't pull out the tire too much if at all...I am using BFG AT KO's..I almost went with MT's but i think the extra grip on the MT's would have been too wide and would have eventually grabbed a hold of something and pulled it off the truck(like the air dam or the fender lining)

Highway...I get about 12 when mostly city driving
  • 4x44x4 Member Posts: 114
I had my torsion bars cranked up 4 turns and that combo wouldn't work...I didn't even try 295's cuz the jump in price on BFG went from 155 to like 180 something..half and inch of width that will only cause more problems wasn't worth it to me..

A buddy of mine is a manager of a discount tire so he let me try almost every combo we could think of...again i have seen 305's on stock wheels but the 8's just make the tire too wide in both the front and back..

Sorry im sure i missed this but you have LT285's BFG's on your truck? The all terrain? How much did they run you?

Im curious i seen some on an older (97) CK and liked em.

After this winter im gonna switch em out to that size thanks

I agree with you. I thought it was strange the truck he had on the lot had 285's if the 305 or 295 would fit. Did the four turns level your truck and did it have to be realigned? I hope you had the dealer put the alignment kit in under warranty. I understand if not within the first 7500 miles it would cost about $150.00

If I'm not mistaken I read somewhere that the Duramax Diesel has aluminum heads. Anyone other than me concerned about that?

mthl, where do you live? You said you drove a cc shortbox w/8.1. I live in western New York, one hour sw of Buffalo. No dealers here can even order one of these yet because they can't get allocation. I'm ready to travel to buy one of these. Anybody else that knows where I might find one your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

Your pics of the cc are great, wheels look really good what make are the wheels? Do you think the place you traded your stock wheels might still have them? If so would you e-mail a name and #.
    Thanks,

I drove a 2500 EXT. SB 4x4 Duramax Auto. Wed. On the highway it was fine, in town though it seamed to have a reverberation similar to a Crew Cab or Tahoe when you have the rear windows open but not the front driving at 30+ mph. You more feel it in your inner ear. The truck ran smooth. Has any one else noticed this?

The wheels are american eagle 16x8's..cost me $80 bucks a wheel..Thanks for the compliments...e-mail me at cf2427@hotmail.com and i'll find the number to discount tire where i traded them in...they gave me $55 bucks a wheel..

Ryan, the BFG's AT KO's are about 154-156 no matter where you look...seems BFG set a price on them and no dealer is authorized to change the price..what happened to the bridgestones ?

The four turns did level out the truck and no i didn't get it reallingned...i tested it going down the highway and it still drives straight..
but if the allignment is free to 7500 miles then i might as well get it done..

anyone else have a creaking noise when turning left..all of the sudden this started last night..
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I see somewhere u said they are 285/70

    Arent they 75's???

The tires i have now are P265/75/R16. I found some BFG's on their site. The all terrain TA's LT285/75/R16.

The bridgestones. Well i gave up on em. They are on national backorder i havent called back in 3 wks. I want to go with a little bit bigger tire. I figure early spring ill get em. Probably around march spring break time

have you learned nothing in reading all the posts from the silverado owners on this board. There is one thing in common that they all share.

    1-Persist until you succeed

2-The squeaky wheel gets the grease

If the Firestone dealer promised you the tires, by all means, you should get your tires. The more you complain, the more likely he will give you yours before someone who doesn't constantly complain. Also, you could call firestone's corporate and file a verbal complaint followed by a written one along with another to the local BBB. Just my opinion...

    Hi loyalgmcguy,
planning on ordering Summit White it's cooler for my part of the country and it looks cleaner even when it's dirty.
Tried to order 2 tone but it isn't offered with the split bench seats don't ask me why the dealer couldn't figure it out either.
Haven't actually put in the order yet I was hoping to get more information from new owners of the 8.1 and get their input.
Heard that the SES light has been coming on in some of the 8.1s and would like to find out more about this.
Thinking of starting a new thread just on the new 8.1s so I don't have to be searching all over the place for answers.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Nah i would rather pay the $800 and get a better tire. Im not in the mood for fighting. I have to much other stuff to do now.

I live near Dallas Texas. There are 3 dealers around here that have crew cabs. Friendly, Van and Classic Chevrolet. The 8.1 short bed was 4x4, LS, pewter with charcoal interior. They wanted sticker plus the price of the wheels and tires. The same dealer has two other crew cabs, both with the 6.0, one green one gold.
  • 4x44x4 Member Posts: 114
I ordered out of Austin for 200 over invoice..a bud of mine got his crew cab 4x4 LS SWB DMAX for invoice from another dealer in Austin ! My dealer was Covert and his was Henna..Both are great dealers so you might want to give them a call!

I ordered a 2500 HD with a HD NVG manual tranny. Did I make a mistake? I wont be towing an incredible amount at least not for now. Has anybody ever driven the manual, how does it feel? I would appreciate some input while there is still time to change my order if I want to. Mileage i figure would be around the same since fourth in the auto and 5th in the manual are the same and I do alot of freeway driving....please help me out with this decision...

board insist on standard. They say that they have better control of the truck in adverse conditions.
