While I certainly don't have a problem with bringing cars over the border to get a better deal [the US's current laws are terrible in restricting buyers' choices from importing from the UK/Europe and other countries], but you DID know that it would void your warranty or parts of it before you did this. Doesn't the warranty booklet tell you this? Didn't the dealer?
I have sympathy for your situation, but when you bring in a grey market car, that is unfortunately the penalty you have to pay -- no or a more limited warranty. I would think that if you sold the vehicle to an Amercan across the border the warranty may still be effective, but that would require taking a loss on the sale due to the battery failure, etc. Unless you can blame the dealer for not telling you or something, or can convince GM to help (or you just come to a US dealer and lie about your address), I think you you won't really get help for a repair. No one wins with this one.
- If it was more than $2600 - then you can get the battery fixed for $2600 and still make out.
- If it was less than $2600 - then you have a decision to make. Fix it for more than it would have cost to buy it straight from Canada or live with it as is.
Either way, it is a lesson learned.
I already had the harness replaced and battery changed on the recall several months ago (took 4 trips to get them to finally get it correct so the engine warning lite would stay off) when I had no issues w/ the car prior to the recall except the ignition switch prob.
I have been happy w/ my Vue Hybrid and now my hubby w/ his hybrid Camry is making fun of my "lemon". Of course he also gets at least 5 mpg more than me.
I have also found that Saturn HQ does not seem to talk to the individual Dealerships so it is up them to try to figure out the problems on their own, even though the problems seem to be quite similar. I found it easier to call the HQ and talk to them directly and open a customer complain case ( when the car would not go over 30km/h). They looked into it directly and put extra pressure on the dealership too to get the job done correctly. that is how i have all the codes for the wiring issues and work completed.
We had another trip to the dealership a few weeks ago and they fixed the sticky ignition, again updated the battery, and made whatever other changes I'm sure they have a list of - likely including computer reprogramming. Though they said our hybrid and truck was working fine, mysteriously we have gone from 19MPG to 27MPG. Barring any other breakdowns before the next servicing we'll have them fix the rattling of the window that occurs at high speeds.
When we put it in cruise control between 30 and 45 mph, and most natably at 40 mph, the RPM's jump 1000 to 1500 RPM's up and down almost continuously. Does this whether engine's going in and out of eco (hybrid), or whether it is continuously staying in eco.
So, I'm asking you, fellow Hybrid Vue owners if your car does the same?
Thanks!
:lemon:
I am interested in speaking to your source regarding my '07 Greenline :lemon: @$#@%^.
Thank you,
Harry P
1. we tested another hybrid that was in for repair and it does the same thing. Therefore all hybrids are designed that way, it's supposed to do that.
2. we fixed it
3. we can't duplicate the problem
4. cruise is not designed to be used under 55 mph
5. it's because the battery is in the back of the car
6. Where (in Houston) can you drive 40 mph and use cruise, anyway?
7. it's just the engine shifting between electric and gas. don't worry about it.
8. we have no idea what to do next. maybe we'll check with Saturn Tech support (duh!)
9. it could be in the car's computer system and that can't get updated until Saturn discovers there is a problem and programs a fix for it.
10. and my favorite - He'll "personally test drive it and we'll keep working on it until you're completely satisfied". (Of course "he" still hasn't stepped foot near the car and it was returned to us same as it was when we started.)
not completely satisfied or anything near it...
While I like all other aspects of our VUE GL and it has been a very good car to own, I would agree that the cruise control feature is very poorly integrated into the car. I find that I can achieve far better gas mileage when not using the cruise control. It tends to use a LOT of throttle to maintain speed, and often overshoots by a few MPH. Fortunately, I prefer not to use the cruise anyway. Guess it's just my preference.
Otherwise, our VUE GL has performed well and my wife loves it. Her last tank MPG was nearly 29, during the coldest week we have experienced, reaching -20 F. Very happy owners!
Unfortunately, the engine light came on, turned out it was due to the battery.
They are replacing it.
Vue2many - I see your in Houston. Did you recently trade your car in? That would be funny if the 2008 I got was yours. I did notice that last person got an average of 20.7MPG. Probably why they traded it in. Its is closer to 30 with the distances I typically drive during the week (~20 during the weekend). Actually yesterday I got closer to 36MPG using mild pulse and glide... pulsing when going down. It was over 45-60MPG more often than it was under 25.
Anyway I'm a computer tech so tweaking things is in my nature. For someone that drives short distances and does not like to tweak I can see this vehicle being a very bad choice for them.
On our 2007 yes. The first battery we waited for 3 weeks for. The second battery required recently came in a week (much faster than we had anticipated of course).
Given having to deal with these recalls, and the dealings with GM, we felt it time to walk away. I had all Honda's prior to this and LOVED them, so I had every intention of purchasing a Crosstour. We looked at Hyundai because of their reviews, value, and 5yr warranty. When evaluating our trade-in Hyundai called Saturn/GM dealerships many of whom - including the dealership we purchased from originally - told them to, and I quote, "run away from the vehicle".
Needless to say we didn't get much trade-in for the Saturn, but we enjoyed dealing with Hyundai, and loved the Sante Fe even without the reduced cost in comparison to the Crosstour, and went with Hyundai instead of Honda. Absolutely love it so far and comparing dealing with Hyundai to Saturn/GM is like comparing apples to lemons.
It really doesn't seem laugh-worthy to me at all, and it'd be nice to see a little more respect and empathy for someone who may have had a very negative experience - an experience that might differ from your own.

Saturn/GM must have known through the process of our complaints that there was an issue with the hybrid system in order to formulate the second recall - but when did we learn about the second recall? When we took the vehicle into the dealership after it died and rolled backwards down a hill. I could go on for days about our issues and fights with Saturn/GM to have something done.
After the second recall and an additional issue with the battery (which was shorted due to the constant drain from the hybrid system but which they wouldn't cover under hybrid warranty), we were told it "should" be ok. That's not enough assurance for the safety of my family and I'm not willing to wait to find out if the second recall is going to actually fix the problem. Just wait another year and try and find somebody other than a scrap yard to buy a GL Vue. Then you'll realize it's GM that's laughing. Saturn and GM both know these cars are lemons and have admitted it to other dealers while telling us the cars are fine.
My wife and I did our research over the course of almost 8-months (this last recall just gave us the final push to take the loss) and did negotiate well with a dealership willing to work with us, so we're happy with our cost.
Currently I can only comment on the sales process which was night and day compared to Saturn. Time will tell on the new vehicle itself, but I tell you it feels good to be free of GM. Personally I hope GM's IPO tanks, doesn't cover their debts, and they end up scrapped like the vehicles they manufacturer.
1) I notice the check engine light on and worse gas mileage, recall notice comes in the same week
2) I bring the car to the dealer, they tell me they have to order new hybrid batteries and it is safe to drive my car while I wait
3) 3 days later all power to my car is lost while driving, I lose steering, and find my way off the road
4) Trying to work with Saturn for a rental and to fix all the batteries, I got stuck at the "regional help desk", hoping twitter support will help out
5) All batteries appear to be backordered throughout the US
I am kind of getting the feeling that GM tells you that you can keep driving the car so they don't have to pay for a rental, yet people are almost crashing when the batteries drain due to the voltage imbalance
You are absolutely right and they know by now these vehicles are not safe but won't admit it.
1) Recall notice on battery voltage and having a check engine light
2) Dealer telling you that it is safe to drive the car while you wait for a new hybrid battery
3) Power dieing to the car, losing steering etc
Please call the National Highway Safety Administration, if enough is reported it could cause a federal investigation of how GM is causing safety issues with their handling of this recall

i tried getting help from GM's help desk and they told me they would not acknowledge this issue
Onstar called someone out to jump started the car. It seems to be running all right, but the battery light is on and the check in light is on. I'm afraid to drive home (about 250 miles) and get stuck on the road.
At that point we felt it was time to cut our losses.
We bought a 2010 Hyundai Sante Fe and love it. Wasn't expecting to buy a Hyundai but took it for a test drive and it was amazing and the 5year warranty + road side assistance is reassuring after our experiences with the vue. It feels almost like a luxury vehicle and drives great - best of all it made it past the 300mile mark without breaking down like our Saturn Vue did.
What a difference it is to drive in a vehicle and not have a constant worry it will break down - that to me is worth the monthly payment.
This is my third VUE - I got the hybrid because the first two VUE's were wonderful to drive. I had ignition issues with both but other than that - no problems at all.
Added bonus for the new VUE design - based on the Open Antera - Adam VonOpel - the original owner of the Opel cars was my great-grandfather.
kewl... an automotive legacy in our midst!
