I'm not sure I would consider that a good thing, since the 3 is RWD and larger.

I ended up going with 'neither'. An unspoken benefit of the M240i is the (almost) standard Michelin P4s tires, which blow away anything that comes on an M340i (always RFT, almost always grand touring all-season or touring summer). So, a cheaper sportier car that's ~8k less in msrp and doesn't require spending ~$1500 on new tires to get it to perform in a similar manner could be worth it for some.
