Also in today's heighten sense of and after 9/11 and all that has spawned, a lesser known individual might be seen as conspiring to/committing a terrorist act, put on intelligence tracking or be put on the "no fly list". What he is advocating on one hand can be seen as totally irresponsible.

What he is advocating on one hand can be seen as totally irresponsible.

He has done so many things that would be considered close to treasonous. Not becoming someone that wanted to be President of the US. And gotten filthy rich doing it.

On the other hand, all those coal fired power plants represent opportunities for carbon credits for him to broker. He wouldn't want to bite the hand that feeds him, but if someone else does, oh well. ;)

‘The BBC very gravely misrepresented me and several others, as well as the science behind our argument. It is a breach of its code of conduct.

‘I was interviewed for 90 minutes and all my views were backed up by sound scientific data, but this was all omitted. They made it sound as if these were just my personal views, as if I was some potty peer. It was caddish of them.’

Ofcom confirmed it was looking into a ‘fairness complaint’ about the documentary.

A BBC spokesman said: ‘We stand by the programme.’

Lord Monckton, 56, a former journalist and Cambridge graduate, says scientific data shows the world is cooler today than in the Middle Ages.

He appeared alongside other sceptics including distinguished Florida-based meteorologist Professor Fred Singer, John Christy, a climate change expert and adviser to the U.S. government and the climatologist Dr Patrick Michaels, of the University of Virginia.

All their interviews, he claims, were heavily cut so that they appeared as personal views.

‘We do not dispute that there is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but we do dispute its effects’, he said. ‘The data shows that 2008 is the same temperature as 1980 and that the effects of these changes in the atmosphere are not negative but more likely to be beneficial.’

Lord Monckton played a key role in a legal challenge heard in the High Court in October 2007 in an effort to prevent Al Gore’s film on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth, from being shown in English schools.

Ah, the BBC - good old British Board of Censors. Never let the facts, or lack of, get in the way of a good story.

Sometimes wonder if they were the folks who first coined the phrase "An Inconvenient Truth". It certainly fits their current ethos. Very sad demise of a respected broadcaster into a government spin factory.

Los Angeles expected to be warmer in coming years.

Summer 2008 in Southern California goes down in the books as cooler than normal. The thermometer in downtown Los Angeles topped 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32.2 degrees Celsius) just once in July, August and the first two-thirds of September. But don't expect this summer's respite from the usual blistering heat to continue in the years to come, cautions a group of NASA and university scientists: The long-term forecast calls for increased numbers of scorching days and longer, more frequent heat waves.

One hundred years of daily temperature data in Los Angeles were analyzed by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.; the University of California, Berkeley; and California State University, Los Angeles. They found that the number of extreme heat days (above 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32.2 degrees Celsius in downtown Los Angeles) has increased sharply over the past century. A century ago, the region averaged about two such days a year; today the average is more than 25. In addition, the duration of heat waves (two or more extreme heat days in a row) has also soared, from two-day events a century ago to one- to two-week events today.

"We found an astonishing trend – a dramatic increase in the number of heat waves per year," says Arbi Tamrazian, lead author of the study, and a senior at the University of California, Berkeley.

Tamrazian and his colleagues analyzed data from Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Calif., and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power in downtown Los Angeles. They tracked the number of extreme heat days and heat waves from 1906 to 2006. The team found that the average annual maximum daytime temperature in Los Angeles has risen by 5 degrees Fahrenheit (2.8 degrees Celsius) over the past century, and the minimum nighttime temperature has increased nearly as much. They also found that heat waves lasting six or more days have been occurring regularly since the 1970s. More recently, two-week heat waves have become more common.

The team forecasts that in coming decades, we can expect 10- to 14-day heat waves to become the norm. And because these will be hotter heat waves, they will be more threatening to public health.

    Must be all those cars.

And what part is attributable to the Concrete and Asphalt Jungle they have created in the LA basin?

Indeed in architecture and city planning policy circles, this phenomenon has been well known, documented and routinely ignored for decades. (aka negative declaration- neg dec) Now suddenly they are "studying it" and they STILL can NOT put numbers to it!!?? BUT gee it does have a cummulative effect!? DUH !? Have the jet propulsion scientists had a VERY SLOW research grant year? Pretty soon they will have the rocket scientists doing mortgage analysis.!!?? :lemon:
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
    From the article:

Most of the increase in heat days and length of heat waves, however, is due to a phenomenon called the "urban heat island effect."
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
..."Must be all those cars. "...

Using that same logic, ca we can now blame why it is SO very hot in the SAHARA DESERT on the camels wandering around in the desert! ?? ;)

Remarkably similar to Carl Wunsch's complaints to OFCOM over The Great Global Warming Swindle. Wunsch could be called a global warming alarmist. Swindle challenged the alarmist position. Most of Wusch's complaints were upheld and the makers of Swindle were effectively forced to modify the film, they left Wunsch out of the DVD released version. Will be interesting to see the outcome of this complaint.

This whole global warming/climate change thing is no longer a scientific debate. It is a full blown political argument.

Further according to your logic, might be why the polar ice cap is melting. Polar Bears do ALSO !! ;) :lemon: Are you hoping the polar bears go extinct to bring back the polar ice cap?

    Hey Guys,
I read some of your post on global warming and I think we are no cooler than what things were in the 80's... I think alot of buisness use global warming as a marketing tool more often than most people realize. I honestly think that the earth is going through another one of its cycles and we are seeing it. It seems it is a way to make money of the ignorance of the average american who knowledge is persuaded by what the media says instead of being analytical enough to seperate the facts from fiction. Although I can't tolerate cars who don't pass smog tests and where the driver still breaks the law by driving there smoke producing vehicles. I am sure that as time goes by people will get more educated on this matter and still learn to be more considerate about the environement and so on...

Rest easy folks it isn't your car that is causing GW it is the meat we eat.

Meat must be rationed to four portions a week, says report on climate change

People will have to be rationed to four modest portions of meat and one litre of milk a week if the world is to avoid run-away climate change, a major new report warns.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/sep/30/food.ethicalliving

Looks like PETA and the Vegans have found a cult to join.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
Are you just now finding out that meat eaters are the major cause of Global Warming?

PETA has been using Pam Anderson to spew that line for a while now.

Rice paddies also cause Global Warming.

The methane gas released by the meat animals is considered to be 23 times more potent as a climate change agent than carbon dioxide. Multiply this with 55,000 million cattle that are reared the world over for meat consumption, and you will have a fair idea of how much additional heat is being generated. Imagine if China and America alone were to reduce its meat consumption by just ten per cent every year, wouldn't the world's environment be much cleaner and cooler?

And this brings me to another aspect of the global warming debate. Cultivation of rice too is blamed for releasing methane into the environment. With 97 per cent of world's rice grown in Asia, the Asian rice paddies are being accused of adding on to global warming and also sucking the land dry. Since 5000 litres of water is required to produce one kilo of rice, Asian farmers are blamed for the falling groundwater levels. In the recent past, there have been suggestions to reduce the rice plantings so as to not only conserve water but also to save the world from warming up.

    Damn cow farts.

They can have my thick, rare ribeye when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

    or something like that

they can keep the milk though, I prefer bourbon ;)
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
I'm with you on that one. I don't eat as much meat as I used to. And today's milk has things added that I would not consume. Of course when China gets their formula down to where it does not kill the babies we will have them sending us a milk substitute.

It does take more meat to get the same health benefits as in the past. They inject the cattle with growth hormones, so it takes more meat to get the same health benefits as it did 30 years ago. So we should eat more meat to maintain our protein levels. Now that they are finding Soy products may be worse for you than previously thought. Our industrialized food industry has caused more problems than it has solved.

So we have a government that allows the wealthy and powerful to set "game rules" such that when things are good they get wealthy, and when the games go awry, the lower and middle classes have their taxes taken to bail them out and maintain the status quo?

And then either taxes will raise, or in 10-20 years everyone will be told the Social Security $ was spent on other things like this, and the country is too deep in debt to give you more than a few hundred $'s per/month. And they'll use the reasoning that "we told you to put more away in your 401K"; which they're telling us to do while siphoning off 1% a year in fees and using those 401K contributions to support their stock-game!

And we hear the government in some states want people to stop washing their cars? So the government is into what you can use water for and how much.

And now they want to control our diet?

Can the government be far behind in regulating children? After all using the reasoning that people will never voluntarily control their population growth, surely they will need to take that freedom away.

This is really scary stuff, IMO. We continue to cede these freedoms to the government. If we listen to these ideas, we're going to end up as a society where the government is going to control how much energy (gas/oil/electricity) you're entitled to, ration your food and determine what is good for us to eat, watch you on cameras so you'll be "safe" and behave properly, ...

Not quite the country and life that Thomas Jefferson and the Founding Fathers pictured for us.

I recommend to all - get rid of any Speed-Pass transponder despite the inconvenience, fight the camera systems, wash your cars, eat lots of meat, and otherwise fight this insidious Big Brother mentality. ;)
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    Uh-uh, can't do it.

    Washing cars is way over-rated.

And don't even get me started on waxing; that's totally useless.

Whatever happened to Al Gore's TV ads anyway? Did they ever run?
  • kernickkernick Member Posts: 4,072
If Al Gore wasn't in politics and now championing the GW-cause, I could picture his bloated face and body (he doesn't look like he's on a low cal. diet!) on TV every Sun. morning, raising money for his ministry - of which 10-20% would actually go to the needy.

Instead he runs the Carbon-Credit Church of the Gullible and Self-Flagellating Ecolologists.

I guess I'm fired up today, about our Leaders and systems!

From the following article, you will see that it will be pretty hard to get the whole world, and all the desperate people to do things to decrease the CO2 in the atmosphere. The Amazon is known as the lungs of the Earth, and it's forests are being cut-down.

In Aug. alone, at least 300 sq. mile was harvested.

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/americas/09/29/amazon.rainforest.destruction.ap/in- dex.html

Between the development of many areas around the world, and the increasing use of resources and higher standards of living, there is no reversal to putting more CO2 in the air. If it causes warming then we should spend our resources and time preparing to adjust. Nothing we say or do is going to reverse this, anymore then "Just Say No" solved the drug-use issues.
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
This is not to pick on CALI, but even environmentally sensitive (some would say wacko) folks can/will/do NOT reforest indigenous trees such as oak, walnut, redwood. We have close to San Francisco, a city aptly named "REDWOOD CITY" . Hopefully most get why it was named REDWOOD CITY. So if "we" can not garden OUR own back yards, why are we getting bent out of shape about the Amazons which are not under OUR jurisdiction/control/purview or whatever you wish to call it.

I used an earlier example of (est) 60 M head of Buffalo (Bison) roaming the Great Plains. So called environmentalists are slap happy because we have a (app 6,000) Buffalo (Bison) herd in Yellowstone!!! Trying running a 60 M head herd by the environmentalists!? What do you think they would say?

Ah 10,000 to one ratio and I am HELPING!!! ??? :lemon: They will probably tell you this natural phenonmenon is a natural catastrophe!?

CALI is blessed with the "west coast". We will not even construct or cause to exist a desalination plant. Do we really expect it to be built in the middle of the north american continent where there is no water or salt? :lemon:

Another no brainer is bio diesel from algae. There is MASSIVE potential gals per acre of H20. Additional spin off is the production of algae (so they produce oil and food) is enormous consumption of CO2 with another spin off byproduct: OXYGEN !!! They of course want to limit bio diesel!!??????
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Brazil's Environment Minister Carlos Minc said upcoming nationwide elections are partly to blame, with mayors in the Amazon region turning a blind eye to illegal logging in hopes of gaining votes locally.

No different than our politicians. They look the other way to get votes on illegals, shoddy loans, corrupt corporations producing corn for ethanol etc etc. The sad thing is they are clearing the land to grow soybeans. Now we are finding out that Soybeans are not that good for us. Especially the way we process them into simulated food products.

I am with you. There is no way to reverse CO2 emissions. We can maybe slow it a bit by using more efficient fuels like Natural gas or biodiesel. Planting palm trees to make biodiesel is not a great trade off either.

    VOTER ALERT !!!

All who are opposed to guvmint-backed Global Warming legislation should immediately decide to vote for McCain/Palin after hearing Joe Biden last night.

When asked about Global Warming, he said, and I quote:

    "It's CLEARLY man-made."

So all who doubt that and don't want your tax dollars going to fight something that you believe we are not causing anyway need to make sure you don't vote for the Big O.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
    We are all screwed.

McCain is talking about putting Al Gore in the cabinet to deal with CC. Though I do agree that McCain/ Palin is the lessor of two evils.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
In April 2008, Obama mentioned Gore as a cabinet member.

I have yet to see where McCain has followed that lead. Still looking though........

P.S. I just did a BOATLOAD of Googling on the issue and NOT ONE STORY or blog had anyone mentioning Gore as a possible cabinet member for McCain.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
You got to know where to look my man :shades:

McCain, who has clashed with fellow Republicans over climate change, said he would do "whatever is necessary to try to move forward."

He said he would involve former Vice President Al Gore in efforts to address the issue. "I would tap him, I would tap people who have been involved in these issues for many years." McCain noted that he disagreed with the Nobel Peace Prize winner about nuclear energy but added, "I have great respect for Al Gore."

"tap" him and "put him on the cabinet" are two different items altogether.

That's why I could not find mention of a "cabinet" position for AlGore - because there is not one waiting with McCain.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
It is called political posturing. He would not want a liberal like Warren Buffett either. Yet he tosses those names about to drag in undecided votes. Besides Al Gore had told Obama he was not interested in a VP or cabinet post. He has made $100 million on his GW scam and wants to have some fun in his new 100 foot boat. Is that a slimmer Tipper or an intern?

Not sure why showing a "fat cat" couple topside from a 100 ft luxury yacht enjoying the good life is "political"? ;) All we are missing is Robin Leach (Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous drivel) droning on in the back ground!? :)

They had access to much better "toys" (taxpayer's EXPENSE) when he was VP for eight years ! Now that would have been "political"!? :lemon:

Shoot, years ago, I turn down an assignment where I had access to a Lear jet, helicopter, etc. and related crews. I was no where near the VP slot on the food chain.

My daughter sent a link on HFCS. Seems that ADM has bought off the AMA. Not surprising to me. Pollan gives a good synopsis of how HFCS causes type 2 diabetes and obesity in his latest book. Both bigger problems for Americans than GW.
