AFter having my dash rattle fixed for almost 3 days now it is amazing how much more enjoyable it is to drive the thing. A huge stress has been lifted off of me.
Check out topic 2158 Vibrating Silverado Buyback. There are posts from people who have gone and are currently going through buyback. You could post your question there.
Was this the "gieger counter" tick tick noise? Or was it something else? I had my left rear window replaced today, so far, it's really quiet in there now, but the tick tick is more annoying than ever! So what was the noise from? Wait till you get rid of the rotten Wilderness tires, and see how your truck is really supposed to be like. I love the Michelins I bought. I hope they don't screw around with me when I take the Deathstones back after the recall that will happen soon. I didn't want to wait for them to order the Bridgestone's I wanted, so I bit the bullet for now. Barry
I guess my rattle is similar to yours. It was a high pitched rattle that was constant over any small bumps (road cracks). I just took the dash out and put some foam with tape backing in there. Worked great still no noise.
A question for all of the Silveado owners that traded in their Deathstones for the Bridgestone Dueller ATs. What tire pressure are you running your new tires at? I have been researching the deal about trading in my Deathstones. I noticed that the Duellers have a max cold psi of 50. Do you run your tires at the recommended GM tire pressure or at the max psi or what?
I would advise anyone ordering a new sierra/silverado to order the cheap tires and buy what you want. Gm has a large profit margin on tires and you don't get what you pay for. For instance, the deathstone 265 wol, are 365 or so and there worth about 40 more than the standard. Trade for good tires, Michelins, BFG's, (I got Michelin LTX AT 265 wl for my 2000), or whayever you like the best, try and trade the cheap ones in or sell them outright.
I think that I wouldn't advise to changing to 4.10s, if you really want the lower ratio, get bigger tires, that will lower your ratio. It will cost alot to upgrade, nearly imosossible if 4x4, not economical in 2x4, just take your thoughts and knowledge and stick to your wishes next time. You won't appreciable change your towing or acceleration power by changing. For now save you gas money and conversion money towards trading for a vibrationless silverado.
was thinking the same thing also...on the tires that is. Maybe I should be looking into changing to 4.56? Went from 255/70 to 275/70 and lost some low end torque. Figuered gear change was in order. If I went to a smaller tire, the truck would start to look like a dodge...and if I wanted it to look like a dodge, I would have bought one...
Will probably dump this truck in '02 anyway and pickup a Sierra C3...but for now, is it 4.10 or 4.56?
I had been thinking backwards for a short lapse of sensibility. Yes smaller tires would increase the overall rpms/mile like a 4.10 would. I think that this would be a problem on a sierra though. Since the smaller tires wouldn;t be too good unless he already has 265's, then he could go to 245 and make his ratio like 3.90. But it really depends on why he wants to change. I don't buy the whole thought of people ordering a 4.10 so they can accelerate faster. Yes that motor might wind up a bit faster but, your actual acceleration I think will be faster with the 3.73 because you can only rev so fast. Now a 3.08 and a 4.10 are two different worlds. 4.10 all the way. But for me 3.73 with big tires to conserve gas. Thinking about getting the new Duramax, would change the stock 245 tires out to 285, would reduce the ratio from about 3.73 to like 3.45. With all the torque of the engine it wouldn't lug it and would allow it to increase the solo gas milage about as much as the ratio increase. IE 1-2mpg sole.
Winter is coming, so I thought I should see where the block heater cord is placed. So, where is it? I'm supposed to have it but it isn't obvious on first glance. (GM1500).
I got the husky liners for my 2k1, in tan. the color was for 99-00, but matched the floor very nice. i dont know about the grahite or gray but, the liners fit very well (ie all the contours etc) and they have raised edges to hold water and snow etc. they look good, and fit good i highly recomend them. mine cost 50 bucks at a local truck acessory dealer. pat
I went through that experience of changing rear axle ratios on my Z28. I won't recommend it. I battled noisy, whiny aftermarket gears, preload, backlash, took it apart and put back together at least six times before getting it right. "Getting it right" meant putting in the genuine GM gears and oem Auburn carrier. When I did that, backlash didn't matter. Just ran quiet. Avoid Richmond gears at all cost, unless you are just doing it to race.
Getting the 4.10 GM gears may in itself be problematical, as far as ordering from GM without the proper VIN code.
Race, did I read race? Didn't Tim explain to you that trucks are not for racing? So what if Lingerfelter spoofed up a 2500 4x4 ext cab to run 12 second 1/4's. Trucks are not meant for racing...LOL!!
On the second part, you mean that even if I wanted to order a 4.10 from GM, they wouldn't sell it to me? That doesn't sound like GM as I thought they were out to make a buck no matter what. That poses an interesting question. I guess I'll call the dealer tomorrow to find out. So you're saying that don't consider unless using oem parts? or don't do it at all? Just looking for a little compensation since upgrading from 255 to 275 sized tires and didn't really want to go the supercharger route. BTW, the Roadmaster Active Suspension works out really well when carrying loads. I found out that they are supposed to be better than putting in those aftermarket bars. Truck now rides like a truck...
Did you change rims also???? Increasing the width 20mm on a 70 series tire gives you what, 14 mm more sidewall? About 3mm over 1". My RPM calculator comes up with 80 RPM diff at 70MPH.
You must have a calibrated [non-permissible content removed] to feel that difference!!!!!LOL!!!!
Hunter98, I respectfully disagree. You throw 4" taller tires on a truck with 4.30's it will SLOW it's acceleration down as if it had 3.73's.
Block heater plug is on the driver's side of engine compartment near the front of the inner fender, they hid it well that when I asked a service tech at the dealer, he couldn't find it, I did!! Doesn't suprise me from what I've seen and heard of any service department.
and he's been posting under Dan at pacific audio's site. Story's the same but the details change so you know it's a bunch of bs. For one thing, he never went through buyback. But hey, he owned 4 trucks in one year.
I am thinking of upgrading my speakers in my '00 Ext. cab. I got a Crutchfield mag in the mail the other day and they said for my truck there is a 4x6 in the pillar. I assume by 'the pillar' they mean between the front and the back seats. I have no speakers there? Does anybody know if there is a place in the sheet metal for a speaker and all I have to do is cut the plastic? I believe I have speakers in the rear doors by the cup holders but there is no mention of these in the crutchfield mag. Has anybody done a speaker upgrade to their truck? I do not want to upgrade the stereo, only the speakers.
Dean i am washing it saturday morning after i pick up those shingles. I have to wash it cause i have that dance to go to. So it will snow or rain guarenteed.
After almost giving up, I found the plug tie-wrapped to a brake line on the left side in front/below the fuse box, just behind the battery. Had to crawl under the truck to spot it. (Was almost ready to acuse them of not installing it!)
I'm not, by any stretch, the last word on ordering parts from GM, like rear end gears. But there were little glitches here and there, on my Camaro, which cropped up. For example, it had a machined steel gear press-fitted to the carrier, and a proximity sensor which picked up off the gear for the ABS system. But when the carrier was replaced, it didn't come with the machined steel gear. I was able to slip the old one off, and fit it to the new carrier, but when I did, it didn't line up properly with where the proximity sensor was fitted in the housing. I wasn't able to get the GM gears from my dealer. I had to go through an aftermarket source who got them for me. Your experience may be different.
Thanks, guys! I thought I needed new glasses since I couldn't see the heater cable at all, but I must admit that I didn't spend a lot of time looking because I knew that someone here would know and tell me. Ah, the power of the internet!
Called parts dept of the dealer I work with. They said no problem getting the gear. I asked what if I'm upgrading to 4.10 from 3.73. Parts guy said "its your truck do what you want". Talk about customer concern...apparently its available...just have to research any "complications" that may arise out of my "truck surgery". Thanks for the response.
Well i hauled them shingles today. I must say tow haul is actually a nice feature. When the truck is really weighted down you can feel it working. Seems to shift at higher rpms (2500-3000) unlike without it at 2000-2500. Ran much smoother with the tow haul than without.
Also i got my worst mgp today. 11.64 all city no highway. Just thought id share i didnt buy the truck for the mpg im not complaining just sharing.
Less that 12 MPG - sounds like you have a fuel leak. The lowest MPG I have goten is 14.8 (99 Z-71 X-cab LT) - all city, a/c on most of the time. I normally get 15-16 in the city - and Houston traffic is the pits. I get over 19 on the highway (75-80) - I drive "normal" but rarely get passed.
Do you keep track of the hour meter between fill ups? If so what is your average MPH. Mine runs between 20-25 on average.
a new Yukon today and got stuck on the freeway - once on the way up, once on the way back - but I averaged 24 MPG on the 274 mile trip. I estimate about an hour just sitting on the freeway idling, and about 1/3 city driving. I used cruise whenever possible, but had to on/off it a lot because slower moving vehicles caused me to have to adjust my speed. I read the fine print on my window sticker regarding EPA mileage that said 27 MPG highway was the best experienced, and I think that is possible under ideal conditions. I'm going to miss the V6, but I have to get my Yuppie image established. BTW - the GMC salesman's personal vehicle is a 2K Yukon with a 5.3 and said that 12 MPG in town and 15 HWY was all I should expect(max). He made a point of saying that I should not buy this vehicle for gas mileage and said that the 14/17 sticker mileage is unrealistic. Like all the reviewers write - these big beasts are gas hogs. ETHOHO(Each To His Or Her Own). How did the dance go - any more quarter panel dents?
don't know about your GMC salesman but my '00 Denali which weighs 5700 lbs. gets 14/17. I would like to think that the 5.3 should get better gas mileage than the 5.7...and who believes car salesman anyway....except Ryan...LOL!!
Phoenix driving is second only to LA for stop and go traffic jams - especially on the expressways as noted above. How and where you drive does make a difference.
You all forget i am 21 yrs old i like to go stop light to stop light at like 55-60 mph haha. Im sure this attributes to low gas milage. No i do not write down engine hrs only like once a month. I calculate everything else though.
Dance was alot of fun actually. 3 hrs of nonstop dancing. I still cant believe i did it.
Oh guess what dean. It snowed last night. Real fun driving in it.
Actually they build the alt fuel vehicles on a 7700 gvwr f250LD frame. I can get a brand new one for about $15,000 after taxes and rebates in 4x4 SC 5.4 with the same automatic and diff that they use in the SD's. Thing drove great.
Guess I will be both a 1500 silverado and f150 owner at the same time.
Oh ya, AZ will pay for my CNG refueling system at my house. CNG will be about $.60 per gallon equivalent. The bi-fuel F150's only hold about 12 gallons of CNG and 25 gallons of gasoline. Will be a great commuter car/truck.
Still need a big ol' LB CrewCab for weekend hauling. Seeing about getting the 2500HD I have ordered converted to CNG also. I need the KL5 gaseous fuels option which comes with hardened valves and seats. So far, nobody knows how to order this at my dealer.
The AZ incentives are unbelievable for 3 more days.
PS. Took my '99 Silverado into the shop again to fix the parking brake again and have seat belt recall performed. Had to order seatbelt parts. The 4.8L engine is still performing perfect at 28k miles. Have run the crap outta the engine towing probably a total of 5,000 miles at or near the GCWR.
If I get the 2500HD converted, it will end up costing me less than $20 after taxes.
This AZ bi-fuel tax incentive will end up bankrupting the state if they don't halt it soon.
who are having 4.8 and 5.3 vortecs converted to LPG bi-fuel. I read the notice GM put out to their dealers about no hardened valves and seats (KL5) on GEN III 4.8 and 5.3 engines yet, and it looked like it was a long way away ("not currently in the program schedule") There is no date on the information I have, so I don't know how old it is. There have been and will be a lot of conversions done on GEN III engines as they are right now - so we shall see if the gamble 5.3 owners are taking will pay off. I am considering doing one on a new Yukon. What I don't understand is why these engines don't all have hardened valve/seats. I'm no mechanic, but didn't auto companies install hardened valves in their engines when we went to unleaded gasoline back in the 70s?
