A question about leasing in virginia, where the tax is levied upfront on the selling price. Is it just better to just buy the car vs lease? Seems like for an M3 there's an additional ~$7k due at signing. Is it a better deal when buying or is it basically the same amount as leasing - just being screwed for living in virginia?

I would say yes - paying 100% of the sales tax for 36 months of use doesn't make sense. And, the more expensive the car is, the more of a penalty you pay.

The payment will be higher if you purchase it.

thank you, that makes sense to me. I freaked out my first year in virginia when they charged me $1600 sales tax on my current lease, whereas in ohio there was no such tax. that's almost three months worth of lease payments!

Ohio charges tax upfront, as well. But, it's based on the total payments, not the full cost of the car, like VA.

so if i paid taxes in ohio up front, should i have paid sales tax when i moved to virginia?

I'm not sure of how VA handles transfers. It's possible you could have received a credit for sales tax already paid in another state, but doubtful. I was just comparing the taxation of the two states. I didn't realize you had transferred to VA during the lease.

But, in a straight comparison, while you pay sales tax on a higher amount in VA, the tax rate is much lower than Ohio.

Can I request the MF and Residual for a 2022 M4 CS xDrive lease for 36 months at 12k per year? I am in Alabama (if that makes any difference).

    Appreciate the help.

Also, dumb question: the MF and residual are set by BMW and the number you give me is the (what I would call ) "base" Money Factor and the dealer can add on top of that if they want. Correct?

Thanks to you and the other mods here for your help. Turns out I know the manager at the dealer, long story. We got to talking and she agreed to come down on the MF. Ordered the car and awaiting allocation. Likely will be a 2023 model the way it stands. Really appreciate your help!

    Hi,
I was wondering if you could give me input if the finance and/or lease are good deals? I'm in Virginia, 20147.

    Lease
    MSRP 82,595
    payment estimate $1,285.16
    Virginia tax included
    36 month/12k
    MF 0.00176
    Residual 55%

    Rebate Loyalty $500

1st payment + inception fees due at signing
    Inception fees
    acquisition $925
    Doc $500
    Temp Tag $24
    Reg est $500

    Finance
    Sale 82,595
    Tax% 4.150%
    Sales tax 3,427.69
    APR 2.9%
    Down payment 0
    Rebates $500
    Doc fee $500
    Reg est $500
    Total financed 86,522.69
    Finance payment $1,554.32

And since Virginia requires sales tax on full amount for leases, do you think it's better to finance or lease?
I really appreciate your help, thanks!

I'd probably finance, with those payments.

Paying full sales tax for a car you're only going to have for 3 years is hard to swallow.

And, the lease rate is over 1% higher than the finance rate (4.2% vs. 2.9%)

If you think you'll keep the car more than three years, then buying is a no-brainer, vs. leasing.

Of course, paying full MSRP is no fun, in either event.

If you think you'll keep the car more than three years, then buying is a no-brainer, vs. leasing.

Of course, paying full MSRP is no fun, in either event.
Do you think I can negotiate the MSRP? I've contacted various dealers and most said there's an 8-12 month waitlist. Not sure if this is a sales tactic.

    Hi,
I was wondering if you could give me input if the finance and/or lease are good deals? I'm in Virginia, 20147.

    Lease
    MSRP 82,595
    payment estimate $1,285.16
    Virginia tax included
    36 month/12k
    MF 0.00176
    Residual 55%

    Rebate Loyalty $500

1st payment + inception fees due at signing
    Inception fees
    acquisition $925
    Doc $500
    Temp Tag $24
    Reg est $500

    Finance
    Sale 82,595
    Tax% 4.150%
    Sales tax 3,427.69
    APR 2.9%
    Down payment 0
    Rebates $500
    Doc fee $500
    Reg est $500
    Total financed 86,522.69
    Finance payment $1,554.32

And since Virginia requires sales tax on full amount for leases, do you think it's better to finance or lease?
I really appreciate your help, thanks!

Sorry, I'm not in the market. I have no idea. Is this one on the lot?

No, it's a custom order. I think this car is hot right now, despite the trend towards electric vehicles.

And I just want to confirm the loyalty should be $1k, not $500?

    We show $1000 loyalty.
But, that's the least reliable part of our info.

Ask the dealer to check it. If it's $1000, they can't keep it.

    Hi everyone,

    2022 BMW M3 competition
    36 months
    12k miles a year

I would like to know what the money factor is for a lease?

    Credit is 820.

Dealer offered 0.00216 which seems pretty high.

    Please advise.
