smgilles-are you sure the leafs are bigger? aren't they just configured differently? just like the front coils? after all, i think the two rating goes down when you order the TRD, doesn't it? and as far as visual differences, the shocks would be the only way you could really tell the difference. i would not put TRD graphics on a tacoma if i didn't at least have the alloy wheels, since thats all the TRD comes with. people would laugh.

scorpio- how can you upgrade the wheels to 16's when they already come with the 16's? and please re-check your numbered wheels, which one is #3, as you have two labeled #2. and the price i dont want to exceed is $23000 before taxes, after haggling. not retail, that wouldn't be possible.

of TRD's and non TRD's. is the TRD harder and more stiffly sprung? im looking for a somewhat nice riding truck, not a lumber wagon. can you rate them?
  • frey44frey44 Member Posts: 230
I have just driven all of them: TRD Taco, Standard Taco and tundra (SR5, 2x4). There is NO comparison. The Tacos will bounce and jitter you all over the place, somewhat worse than my current 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4. The taco V-6 is GREAT; like an electric motor compared to my Ford 4.0 pushrod "knocker" motor. However, the Tundra is simply an order of magnitude BETTER than any little truck, and for little more money and about the same gas mileage. Get a 2x4 Tundra with limited slip; forget the Taco, and if you want a nice ride forgo the 4 x 4 altogether (unless you REALLY need it in the snowbelt). The ride is Cadillac QUIET and SMOOTH. I would rank the F-150 ride a distant next (I HATE the wind noise around the mirrors and door seals in the Ford), and the GMC slightly lower (the GMC thumps pretty bad on tar strips). Good luck.

I got a non-TRD SR5 with chrome steel wheels. Yes, even the steel wheels, painted or chrome, 4x4 or PreRunner, are ALL 16". I got steel because I sometimes have to use snow chains and using them on alloy voids the warranty and is 'not recommended'. It came with Bridgestone Duelers, which are good tires. I don't like BFG's because they are known to hydroplane. The lug pattern which locks the tires into loose mud & sand also locks water under the tire and does not let it flow out, creating a dangerous cushion while braking. I didn't want TRD because I added Rancho 5000's ($300/all 4, rear shocks & front struts) and a Toyota Limited Slip Differential (about $650: http://www.toyotapart.com/kazuma/limited_slip_differential.htm) for much less money, and got a much better, more versatile and comfortable result. The BFG's, the decals, the dashboard pushbutton - those are all show. Do it right and save money, too.

The deal with Tacoma tires is this:
In a Taco (this is at least true for 2001 which is what did my research on before) 4x2 models come with R15 tires. When you get a 4x4, you need to upgrade the tires to the R16, and you have 3 choices for that: steel, chrome or alloy.
Just another money game by Toyota. Good thing about TRD is that you get the alloys as part of the package. So the whole package is 1.3K, tires are 760, that leaves about $600 for bilsteins ($50/each, I think), fenders and the rear locker.

Whats up with you and Toyota? Are you giving up on the Ranger?
  • eagle63eagle63 Member Posts: 599
Wow, I test drove a new taco xtracab TRD last week and thought it drove great. no bouncing or jittering at all. maybe it's just what we're used to driving.

    tbunder/scorpio
-The TRD package does have a different leaf spring setup. I don't know if it's stiffer springs, or heavier duty or what. -but they are different in some way from a non-trd taco. I'll try to find out the diff. and let you know.
  • bsparxbsparx Member Posts: 84
Yes, regular tacoma 4x2's come with 15" wheels. But not 4x4 OR PreRunner. And the 4x2 DOUBLECAB only comes in 4x4 or PreRunner, not plain 4x2. So EVERY Doublecab will have 16" wheels.

ben- pre-runner or 4x2, they're both 2-wheel drive. and im my mind, non-existant.

eagle- we knew they were different in some way, but didn't know how. you didn't shed any light on the subject. im positive they're just re-gauged a little. toyota wouldn't change them that much. and im thinking they may be softer sprung for off-road duty. that may explain why the TRD pkg. lowers your tow weight rating. the diff's are the same i assume on all 4x4 V6's. TRD's just get lockers.

scorpio- good to see we're now friends. hehe.
anyways, about my toyota prospects. as i told people in the other forum, i will put my ranger up for sale in january. i have a 2 yr old, and i need a back seat. i originally was going to get a frontier, but they just don't really do it for me. not rugged enough looking for me, and imo, the tacoma looks similar to the new '01 rangers, with its raised hood, reflector lamps, and over all truck look. im still torn on the wheels. i will probably just say screw it and get that popular package on toyotas build your own website that includes everything i need including those alloys. i can always buy the steel wheels later for winter use. anyone know how much they are? anyways, you never told me about your pricing. is dickering possible with toyota dealers? even when ordering? i want to order to get it as cheap as i can. later dudes
  • tbundertbunder Member Posts: 580
just fyi, i would never consider a tundra. if i wanted a full-size, without a doubt it would be a new '02 FX4 F150. those tundras are just a little different looking than the T100. those had to be the ugliest trucks ever made. im sure they're good trucks, but im not into full-size. i like to go where no full-size could dream of going.
also, i have a '01 Ranger ext. cab 4 door with the off-road pkg, it rides awesome. doesn't bounce at all. i know they worked on the spring rates for '01, along with enlarging the brakes. also, that new SOHC 4.0 is head and shoulders better than the old pushrod 4.0, although that older motor can go forever if taken care of. in my hometown, there is a rural mailman who has a '93 ranger 4x4 with the 4.0, he has 225000 miles on it and it still goes strong. he has had no trouble with it, replaced water pump once he said. pretty cool.

As far as pricing goes.....I can't tell you about the DC, but from my experience in going to the dealership, they offered me a 23.6K truck for 21K.
I guess your best bet would be to pick all the packages you want, ask for the factory invoice price, take 2% off (dealer holdback), and then add 5% as the profit for the dealer, and go with that. To give you an idea about factory prices(I got the pricing info from fightingchance.com package):
    2001 Toys:
    4x4 DC: 19,877.00
    SR5 chrome: 842
    SR color: 818
    Power without mirrors: 544
    Power with mirrors:640
    TRD:929

    For 2002:
    4x4 DC: 20,018.00
    SR5 chrome: 842
    SR5 color: 821
    Power with mirrors: 660
    TRD: 945
Well, at least you are not buying a F150.
As far as steel wheels go, there's no need to overpay. I thought you could easily select those for the DC. If not.....talk to the dealer, see what they say. Granted, most salespeople are dumb, but you might get a good one (When i went to the dealership, I had to explain to the sales what their trucks had, specs wise)

    Good luck

I haven't confirmed it through Toyota but I have read that the TRD diff uses the 8" ring gear set up like the pre '96 trucks and the nonTRD diff uses a slightly larger ring gear since the change in '96. That could be the reason for the load capacity difference with the TRD package.
I went with the alloys because the steel wheels on my Nissan rusted on me after 8 years and I plan on keeping this truck for a while if I can. The TRD ride is harsher than the nonTRD but it still isn't rough unless you are accustomed to Caddys and Lincolns. The Tundra is bigger than I want and seems to another step toward consumerizing the pickup truck. It's just to cushy for me.
Whether or not you can haggle with a Toyota dealer or not depends entirely on the dealer. It is even harder to find a dealer that will special order and negotiate too. I bought my truck over the phone and drove two and half hours to pick it up after it came in.
  • tbundertbunder Member Posts: 580
i go to the toyota site and build my own. they offer "popular package" 1 thru 4, each with options and packages inside these "popular packages" like sr5 and trd, wheel upgrade #3, etc.

but are what you guys saying is that i can go and order whatever i want? as in power and trd? if thats true, it may be cheaper. how much is the locker anyways? that may be cool to have since they don't offer a lsd according to the brochure.

the reason i would even consider the steel wheels, is because on page 22 of the '01 brochure, it shows a flareside tacoma 4x4 with the black paint and color sr5 pkg, it has these wheels and looks sweet. i could always buy the alloys off ebay or something.

also, whats with the hi-4 selector switch? is this push button 4x4 or what? i thought you guys liked the lever? later
  • reynolds6reynolds6 Member Posts: 31
I visited about half a dozen dealerships to find out which options I liked and which I didn't want. You will need to find a dealer to talk with about ordering your truck. They will be able to tell you what you can get and what you can't get. Not all dealers are well informed, however. I was at the fourth one before I was told that you can't get a Limited D-cab in white. For situations like this, the option pages on edmunds, carpoint and kbb will give you a good idea of what has to go with what.
The hi-4 switch is a pushbutton on the side of the lever. Skip it, it will only give you trouble down the road and it's not that hard to engage the lever. Also, the TRD parts division does offer an after-purchase option of limited slip that can be installed by your dealer. You might be better off to go aftermarket if limited slip is what you want, though. The painted steel wheels do look kinda cheesy, especially when they are on a lunar mist truck that is a near perfect paint match for them.
I don't remember seeing what area of the country you are in. If you are in an area served by Southeast Toyota distributors or Gulf States Toyota distributors, you may have more of a problem getting something close to a base unit. I know that SE likes to sell only the higher profit, optioned units and I have heard the same about Gulf States.

You can factory order a Tacoma. However, you have to find a Toyota dealer willing to go through the process. Tacomas are spec'd out in advance by each region's dealerships. They get together before each model year and decide what will sell best in their area and Toyota builds for that market. Here in the PNW you see a lot of Lunar Mist 4x4 DCabs with Alloy wheels, tow hitch and split rear windows. Not as many pre-runners. Down in California I see a lot of red and black pre-runners. A lot depends on the region you're in.

I would suggets going to the individual web sites for Toyota dealers in your area and request price quotes to the internet/fleet sales mgr for the exact color/option Taco and see what they come back with. You may find something close to what you want or an exact match or the dealer may offer to factory order for you.

I had a dealer in Washington who was willing to do a factory order for $600 over dealer invoice but was willing to match or beat any quote I had from another Toyota dealer. Toyota dealers will compete to get your business. I read on a lot of the other threads that Toyota dealers are arrogant. Maybe some are but I did not find that to be the case. I got my 4x4 Dcab for $450 over dealer invoice. Good luck.
  • muscleslivermusclesliver Member Posts: 1
The TRD offers a different rate for the springs. The Factory TRD setup is better than any aftermarket set up for the price. A locker in the rear will cost about a grand.

The reason for 16" wheels is to fit bigger disc brakes on the front and most of the public thinks wheels size has to do with rim and forget about other numbers like the actual tire size.
  • tbundertbunder Member Posts: 580
i really appreciate all your help. i live in the midwest (iowa) and all i see up here are TRD's. i dont want to be like everyone else. i would think the regular 4x4 tacoma is just as capable as the TRD. option a locker on it and its just shocks and springs away from a TRD. and i wouldn't want the harsh ride the TRD provides. when the time comes to order, i will talk to several toyota dealers.
  • sc0rpi0sc0rpi0 Member Posts: 897
If you want to be different, dont get TRD.
Spend the money on 3" suspension lift. TTORA guys say that if you go with the lift, you'll end up replacing all teh components anyway. You need a lift if you want to clear bigger tires (33") anyway.
  • tbundertbunder Member Posts: 580
im into the totally stock look. i hate lifts on new trucks. what a waste imo. tires are the only thing i may add.
  • reynolds6reynolds6 Member Posts: 31
I agree with tbunder on the lift issue. I wouldn't put a lift kit on an IFS front end even if someone else paid for it. If you really need a lift, you are going to want the leaf spring set up on the front anyway.
  • tbundertbunder Member Posts: 580
checked on a new '02 at toyota of des moines today. they are 4 months out to special order one, and can only get what toyota is building in this area. a total crock. also, they will only discount the truck $1000 off msrp. unbelievable. the nissan dealer down the street can get me a special ordered Frontier in 5-6 weeks, sell it to me for $300 over invoice, and that is a loaded crew cab 4x4 XE, for not even $22000- a bargain indeed. the toyota is a nice truck, but not that nice. nissan's frontier won JDPowers best compact truck in quality last year. ill take one of those. later guys.
  • wsnoblewsnoble Member Posts: 241
Ordered mine a week and a half ago, 4-6 weeks, the way i want it (D-Cab/AA/LX/CQ/AB) $400 over invoice.

Toyota of Nashua, in NH, if you want to take a drive...

4 months is BS as is 1000 below MSRP...

Buddy got his for 300 over, but he didn't order.

Remind them that auto sales make up 24% of the economy's sales and that sales are down, way down!

    Good Luck

Anybody know of a good dealer in Southern California? Orange or San Diego County? Looking for a Tacoma Double Cab PreRunner.
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
There are plenty of dealers. You may do better in Orange than San Diego, and possibly better in LA.
  • toadmantoadman Member Posts: 39
Sorry to hear on the Toyota D-cab. I hope the Frontier works for you. I was disappointed in the Frontier. The standard V6 on the Nissan with just a 170 hp is too weak for the truck. I also found the interior cramped, especially the back. Still it beats an extended cab for interior room. Nissan does great on the options. Wish Toyota would get a clue in that dept. I have no doubts on the reliability. I owned my Nissan for 10 years and never had an issue with maintenance. Just tires, batteries, oil, filters and light bulbs for ten years. And a few gallons of gas. Unfortunate for Nissan that they lost my biz because of rush to get crew cab to market. Needs the 3.5L 240 HP and a few more inches in the back seat.
  • chiweihochiweiho Member Posts: 51
Not sure you have hear of this, but there is an Office of The President (OTP).

I have been complaining with the dealer, and Toyota_cares@toyota.com with problems with my truck. They just gave me a "go screw yourself" attitude. I emailed the Nummi plant, (since it is GM(UAW), no reply), and Toyota Japan. Japan send the email to OTP and I got their attention, but not for long. The guy told me there will be no more correspondence between him and I, since the dealer is handling the issue.

I ask the assistant of OTP if I can get a new truck, he said no, have to go thru arbitration with a third party firm (paper work is in the mail).
I ask the assistant of OTP if they can replace my engine and tranny, he said the dealer will contact me early next week.
I told the assistant of OTP why Toyota_cares@toyota.com can not answer any basic question, he just said, "why didn't you ask the supervisor", like customer service can only answer questions in the owners manual.
I ask the assistant of OTP if they can replace the clock of my truck with a Pac-Rim type clock (different size and location), he said NO.
I ask the assistant of OTP if he want all the correspondence of emails I received from Toyota, he said not necessary. I guess he knows it's pretty bad.
I ask the assistant of OTP if he can find out where the engine and tranny is made, he said he can't, and does not offer other ways of getting the info.

I will not be buying another Toyota and will no recommend anyone to buy one, because if you get a lemon, you are screwed.

I am proud to announce the purchase of my new Toy. I drove home my new DC last night. It has been the apple of my eye for some time now, and finally, I have one. Just to share the info, I chose a Limit package with TRD, VIP, bed ex tender and tow pkg. I paid $800 over invoice, and did all the work via the internet and phone. I showed up only to take delivery. I can hardly wait to get it off road. Not tooooo harsh yet, don't want any scratches yet.

Has anyone done an air intake upgrade? I have seen these in mags from companies like K&N that advertise increased mileage and hp. Any real life experiance out there, did it work? I am happy with what I have, but ya know, always want more power.

    thanks

Congrats on the new truck! It looks like I will be taking delivery of a new '02 2WD DC, it appears that it will arrive any day now. I opted for the TRD package and a few other options, for $500 over invoice. Although I went with a local dealer that a friend recommended (and I felt relatively comfortable with), I also tried the "Blast Faxing" tactic, faxing a total of 24 dealers with my requirements and what I would pay, telling them that the lowest bid would get my business. About half faxed replies, a quarter called back, and the remaining quarter I didn't hear from at all. I guess that these last ones expect me to come groveling to their doors, but I got news for 'em. All the all other "out-the-door" prices were in the neighborhood of the low $24K range.

Since the model I specified is not available with factory alarm installed (only on the Limited), I plan to make an appointment to have a Low-Jack system installed, along with a more "conventional" alarm system. Any recommendations to the latter? Thanks!
  • tacoma4metacoma4me Member Posts: 14
Sorry Human, don't know much about alarm systems. The one I got, was the VIP system from Toyota installed at the dealer. I understand that Low-jack works great. Can help cut your insurance also.

You did great on your invoice+500 deal. I spent time on Edmunds and CarsDirect mostly to figure what I wanted to pay. Picked my options, then hunted for it myself. I then called a local dealership that had a good rep for being fair, and got them to do a dealer trade for the one I wanted. Installed the extras, and handed me the keys (after I gave em a fat check). I am happy with my deal, but I think you got me beat.

    Now it's time to accessorize.

Have fun with your DC, and good luck on the security system.

I'm still waiting for my 02 D-Cab. Special ordered (CQ/AB/AA/LX) and due in around X-mas. 400 + 85 doc fee over invoice...

check out http://www.tacomaterritory.com tons of good Tacoma info. Check out the deck plate mod for the airbox, as well as the K+N and AMSOIL air filter setups...

    Congrats on the new D-CAB(s)

Sounds like you will have a great Christmas gift in your stocking this year. Also sounds like you got a killer deal. I am happy with what I did, but looks like I needed you guys to give me some coaching next time I buy something.

I have seen the Tacoma Territory page, and read the deck plate mod. I might give that a shot. I was also saw a mod for the turn signal. Any idea why you would want to do that? What was gained? Only thing I can think of was that you could then use the lights below the bumper on the front as extra running lights with another mod.

    thanks

Do these trucks have a clear coat?

What polish and wax do you use or recommend?

I want to take this job away from the detailer.

    Thanks

    Hi-Tech Yellow Wax

It works great, no polish needed, since the truck is new, and no cleaner wax needed. i use the cleaner and polish and the clay on my older cars. I prefer and can wax over the plastic bottle, because the coat is thicker.

Will be celebrating my one year anniversary come Thanksgiving week between me and my 2001 Tacoma Double Cab. Having problems with stress fractures/cracks in the paint at rocker panels and door frame sills where the two pieces of metal meet (at the weld). Anyone else having such problems? Dealer fixed rocker panel problem but still waiting on door frames on all 4 doors to be repaired. Check yours out!

    Hello Everyone,

I live in the Bay Area. I am looking for a 02 Tacoma DC Prerunner. The best deal I can get is $500 off from MSRP price. Does anyone know a Toyota dealer closer to the bay that offer a good deal?

    Thanks

On the hood or in the engine bay?

There is a bug shield and nothing is the stuck
one th bottom of the hood.

I wish they had the 23mm ZSU option, it would be great also against people driving with cell phones.

It's easy to access dealer information off Toyota's website. Why not email a few of them asking for a price on the truck, or better yet, make them an offer?

I've bought my Xtracab 1 week ago for $100 over invoice (I live in TX, though). Invoicedealers.com, autovantage.com, the whole shabang.....I actually found www.carbuyingtips.com very useful. I'm pretty sure you can get a better deal than overpaying by 2K....
  • alex17alex17 Member Posts: 35
On the bottom of the hood. Usualy some type of material that is designed to melt and cover the engine if the engine catches on fire. It usually helps with reducing engine noise into the cabin.
  • chiweihochiweiho Member Posts: 51
sorry, dude, i don't have one. there is not much engine noise, maybe with the SC installed it may be a little loud.

    Hello,

I'm ready to buy a DC that will be fairly loaded. I had the internet manager contact me after an Autovantage inquiry. He offered 3% over DEALER COST. WOW! That's what I thought, until we started talking about closing the deal.

It turns out he is the former F&I manager, now he is the Internet Sales Manager for Universal Toyota in San Antonio. We started out with the invoice prices for everything (FYI - Dealer cost for the Double Cab V6 Prerunner 2wd is $16,807). We added the options at invoice. I'm still happy at this point. Then he added MAF $252, Delivery/Proc/Handling $535, TDA $189, Base-Veh-HB $379, PIO-HB $7, Finance Reserve $189. After he totalled all of these fees, he then added 3% to this figure which exceeded TMV price with options by over $500, or just above 5% over invoice price. We were not in the same neighborhood as 3% above dealer cost. Suddenly, I'm not so happy anymore.

While I realize that he did a major no-no with how he performed the math (he should have taken 3% of just the vehicle and options AND THEN added the fees), I'm left with a question. Did any of you recent DC buyers pay any of the above fees? If so, what fees did you pay? Which fees are legit? I will buy one of these soon. I'm ready now. I would appreciate some guidance on the fees.

    Thanks.
  • sc0rpi0sc0rpi0 Member Posts: 897
Looks like he's trying to be a prick and get more money out of you. I bought an XC over the net at Champion Toyota in Austin, and all I had to pay was the destination charge, title fees and tax.
  • brunet01brunet01 Member Posts: 18
sc0rpi0, I am about to buy a double cab, I live in Killeen, and the dealer here will not budge from MSRP, so I may buy from Champion. Who did you deal with? Thanks.

advice on which dealer to go with, but I can say without a doubt avoid Red McComb's Toyota in San Antonio at all costs. Although I did get a fair price for my truck from them in the end, it was an all day affair full of bickering, schemes, tag-team games with salesmen and sales managers, etc. They even tried to get away with applying the $1000 rebate to them and not me! To top it off, after-sales service has been absolutely atrocious, thanks to some new service writers there, especially Melissa, a real charmer.

My next vehicle purchase will be done over the internet to the lowest bidder.
  • sc0rpi0sc0rpi0 Member Posts: 897
Ask for Jim Lee at Champion, he's an internet salesman (maybe general sales too, don't know). Just call 440-4500 and ask for him (if the line is busy or nobody is picking up, try couple more times, they've been hit with the storm bad). Tell him Andrei Ivanov recommended you.
P.S. Whatever you do, don't go to Classic Toy in Roundrock. They tried to screw me over big time (selling me a 21K truck for 30K)
P.P.S. if Champion Toyota deal doesnt work, check out the dealership in Humble, TX. They were first ones to contact me with a truck, and at the time ( Somewhere like Nov 5th) they had sales of 1%-9% over invoice on Xtracabs, so there just might be something for the DC as well.
  • navcadnavcad Member Posts: 4
First, I emailed Champion. They responded lighting fast. With no BS, I arranged to buy a DC from Champion after talking with Brian St Cyr. He has THE DC coming onto the lot this Wednesday (in the right color, the options I wanted, etc). At this point it seems just too good to be true. I'm supposed to take delivery, and close the deal on Wednesday also. I'll drive up from San Antonio to do so.

Here's my deal that I close this coming Wed:
2002 white DC SR5 chrome (V6), TRD, power package, cruise control, daytime running lights, sliding rear window, body side molding, spare tire and wheel locks - out the door (TTL and everything) for $23,442.67. I missed the TMV price by about $200 over. But when I pick up the EXACT truck I wanted after only a four day wait (instead of 6 months from Cavender in San Antonio), I'll be a happy camper.

And on the topic of San Antonio dealerships: Avoid Alamo Toyota. The internet manager was a sarcastic tool. I can only imagine the nightmare of trying to close a deal with that jerk. But on the good side, I really liked the folks at Cavender Toyo off loop 410. They were kind, courteous, and professional. They could match the Champion deal, but I wasn't willing to wait up to 6 months for a new car. Kevin Rumsey at Red McCombs was great about contact, and he seemed very honest. But I could only get a good price from a vehicle on the lot. And I didn't like the colors/options I would be limited to. It would also take a long time to order from them.

I'll keep you posted. But if this Champion deal goes as well as I'm thinking it will (I've got a good vibe, plus go figure the EXACT DC I wanted is a few days away in transit - and no one had put the glom on it...) I'll post the results after I drive it home. Basically, I'll post the results regardless. But I do feel that Brian is being straight up with me. We'll see.

Thank you all for the great info! It has made a big difference in reducing the stress associated with buying a new vehicle.

I have to say, I am somewhat disillusioned with the online buying services. They seem to direct you to a dealership that lures you onto the lot. It seems like all the online services do is "leads management" for the dealers.

I didn't see any benefit to contacting Autovantage, Stoneage, or Invoicedealers. All they did was farm me directly to an internet salesman. You can do this by sending an email to the dealership. To get in touch with Champion, I just sent the dealership a direct email. I'm finding the online car buying services (the ones listed above, anyway) to be pretty worthless.

But I've also found that the community here at Edmund's is the best thing to ever happen to consumers buying a new sled! The info from this site is very empowering.
