I do not believe the NHTSA has plans to crash test the Double Cab. I love the truck, but am frightened by the 1 star side impact rating given to the extended cab. Does anybody know if the DC would produce better results? The vehicle I would most like to have is the F150 Supercrew, but I really do not need a full size truck. I also do not want to pay for it, about a $4k delta.
Ok. I'm able to purchase the 2nd Generation TRD Supercharger for $2065 total and then $300 for the installation at a local dealer. Does this sound/look like the cheapest I'll find the supercharger or can it be had for less elsewhere? Thanks again!
Sticker price was around $27k. I paid $1300 over dealer invoice, and I traded in my 96 Ford Ranger. Overall, I was pretty happy with the deal. This truck had all the options I wanted, yet it wasn't a Limited. I'm getting just over 18 mpg with a combination of city/highway driving.
The only complaint I have is the stupid location of the digital clock. It's behind the steering wheel, so you can't see it while you're driving. To the engineer that designed it: shame on you.
Thanks to everyone who posted messages here. I visited this forum a lot before I bought.
One thing to consider about the safety rating. They crashed into a 2 wd without Prerunner suspension or tires, and the bumper-crasher was higher than the floor and just hit doors. Since the double cab only comes in Prerunner or 4x4, the floor and frame will be high enough to meet most every bumper out there except lifted full-size trucks. So unless you get t-boned by BillyJoeBob in his lifted Z71 2500 because the oem brakes couldn't stop the 35" bfg's, you should be ok.
I recently ordered a Tacoma Double Cab and requested, among other options, the Moon roof and Running Boards.
After making the down payment, I received a call and was told that these two items were not available and I could only get the truck without them OR they could install a comparable item at the dealership for a higher cost.
Has anyone else out there heard that these items are NOT available through the factory?
I ordered a DC this past weekend. Dealer was able to trade allocation. My Lunar Mist Met SR5 will be here the end of the month.
stevek116, Did you order an SR5 or Limited? There is a picture of the Limited with a sunroof in the brochure.
Details of my DC:
2WD 3.4L V6 IX Package Tow Package VIP Security System Cruise Sliding Rear Window Floor Mats Cargo Net
Anybody know where to get an aftermarket LSD? What about Tacoma owner message boards? I did not get the TRD because of the locker. I want a road useable diff.
Check www.tacomaterritory.com It's a great site for learning stuff about tacoma's, upgrades, etc. I have seen a limited slip offered on some toyota aftermarket websites. Go to the tacomaterritory homepage and you can link to sites that sell stuff. Steve, where are you located? Did the salesman tell you this about the moonroof and running boards? Did you talk directly to the parts dept.?
I did speak with the salesman, and he said they're having a problem obtaining the moon roof and running boards, but if I wanted, they would install a slightly different roof at the dealership and I'd have to wait for the running boards.
I ordered an SR5 Chrome package, with ABS, Running Lights, Moon roof, Off road Package, Siding Rear window, Power Package, Tow Package, rear sliding window, running boards, convince package, VIP security System, Cruise and floor mats.
What I'd like to know is if anyone else out there has had the same problem or if there is some dept. at Toyota America that I can speak with.
I really don't want the dealership to hack up my new truck and then charge me more $$$ to do it.
I can't beleive the BS dealers come up with. Go to the main toyota site and look in the FAQ section. Listed there is a place to complain about dealerships. Call or write a letter and someone from toyota will call you. Maybe then you guys can get a straight answer. I wrote a letter complaining about my experience with the finance dept. and someone from toyota corporate called to follow-up.
Here is what I know for sure. The limited's are only available in certain markets. For example, you can't (or at least it's very difficult) to get a limited in the Gulf States Region because the toyota distributer for that area either isn't allocated limited's or they don't want them. My dealer here in TX said he could order a limited but it would come from toyota in CA instead of the distributer that supplies the gulf states region. He said it could take 6 months so I decided not to take the chance and wait. Dealerships are supplied their vehicles by distributers that take care of a certain region. This is why factory orders aren't taken. The vehicles go from the factory to the dist. and then are ordered by the dealerships. This is why dealerships say they can't get certain options on the vehicles that are available to them.
In my experience, it all depends on who you talk to. I talked to 10 different people and got 10 different answers. Keep calling dealerships and asking about running boards and the moonroof. Someone is bound to know their stuff.
I wouldn't let the dealership install a moonroof. It's an after-market product installed by people who don't do it very often. Who knows how well it would fit? I'd worry about it leaking.
I bought a new Toyota Corolla in 1991 and had the dealer install an after-market cruise control system. It broke after four years. Toyotas are high-quality cars, but those add-ons probably don't go through the same QA.
No worries on the running boards, they just bolt to the frame.
Just to clarify. I wouldn't want some billy bob at the local dealership going at my roof with a sawzall either. But if it is done at the factory or distributer level, that is another story. At this level, these guys do a decent qty and should have the resources and experience to do it right. I have talked to people who have moonroofs and are happy with them with no leaks and excellent fit and finish. Of course, there will always be exceptions.
can anyone tell me what the going rate for a 4 cyl toyota tacoma double cab with the sr5 package should sell for?? i've been quoted several prices and this is all confusing to say the least..my hubby wants this truck and we cant seem to find one for less then $22,000..HELP my email addy is seatrout1@hotmail.com thanks
Well ive had mine for 3 months now and yeah it's worth it believe me!...of coarse i'm a power nut so i had to have one.i just installed the pillar mounted boost gauge to add to the fun.the other day i was fooling around with some kid in a civic SI and he replied "i didn't know trucks could go that fast"....lol the look on his face was priceless.
My 01 Tacoma Double Cab came with running boards. I don't know if they were installed from the factory or dealer. All I know is that they were on there when I purchased it. My Taco had a little less than 3 miles when I purchased it and I assumed it came straight from the factory with the options that were on it. I didn't ask though.
Just got off the phone with the factory in California and spoke to a gentleman there who said he was driving a Tacoma DC 4x4 with both the Moonroof and the Running boards factory installed.
He said that the factory is still manufacturing the DCab, with the options just as I wanted.
They are going to contact the dealership and see if they can get the order number to find out where my vehicle is on the production line.
He seemed to think that the dealer may have "ordered" it, but the distributor never did and just went looking for a vehicle that fit the bill, which means I could wait another 12 weeks ontop of the six!
With my luck, I'll finally get the vehicle and there'll be a recall.
after 3 1/2 mos. D-cab 4x4, ABS,cruise control,daytime running lights,high 4 selector switch,sunroof,power package w/ mirrors,rear seat cargo net,running boards,sr5 pkg w/ color-key pkg,sliding rear window,TRD,tow hitch and supercharger installed,+ tax,title and license for a grand total of 30,750.00. I am curious to see what the mass thinks about the deal I got........and no,the supercharger isn't in yet so I don't know how it is,but I can't wait.
Does anyone know if Toyota plans to re-design the DC in the near future? I heard they are re-designing the 4runner for 2002 and was wondering if the same was true for the Tacoma DC.
Has anyone on the board heard an official date for when Toyota will include a 5-speed option with the 4x4 double cab model? Every time I speak to a salesman at the dealership, I either get the deer in the headlight look as if I suggested the impossible or the succinct answer of "never". It seems hard for me to believe that all those smart people working at Toyota HQ haven't contemplated a market for this option.
I went to the auto show last weekend and finally got to compare the toyota double cab, the nissan crew cab, and the chevy crew cab at the same time and up close. I was mainly trying out the back seats for comparison. The toyota wins hands down for most comfortable and easiest to access (get in to and out of) backseat. My 6'6" friend agreed. I had ridden in the back of the nissan crew but hadn't ever been in the chevy. Glad I bought the toyota!
Extreme, Congrats on the new truck, sounds like what I might be looking for. What was MSRP on it? Let me know how you like the Super Charger and how its stability is. Do you have any roll over concern?. Lastly, let me know if its worth the $30,000 price tag. Tundras cost about that much and are nicer, except for the back seat. Thanks
I live in the Seattle area and recently bought a Toyo Tacoma double cab with most bells and whistles. I love it. Got if for $900 over factory invoice. I want running boards like the ones that come of it from the factory, but after much research I found out that it would cost approx $1100 to buy them through the dealer parts department when the MSRP for those that come factory installed is only $315. This is apprently because Toyo is not yet selling them as standard parts. The parts department does sell stainless steel tube steps for about $464. Has anyone bought the tube steps? Do you like them? Anyone have the standard black running boards in the Seattle area that would like to take them off and sell them?
I was told by the dealer that the running boards "weren't available" after I ordered my truck. However, after calling the factory where the DCab is built in Fremont, CA, I finally got the vehicle ordered the way I wanted it - with the running boards.
One of the people I spoke with at the factory told me he was driving the vehicle with the factory installed running boards and that they had them in stock and were building vehicles with them installed.
I suggest you call Toyota direct to get the real picture. For a dealer to tell you the running boards are 3 times MSRP just means they're getting another $800 for the vehicle they've already sold you.
My tacoma doublecab came with the running boards which I immediately upgraded to the chrome tube steps - $1100 is a ridiculous amount to charge for this aftermarket option by the way. I'd be glad to cut you a deal on my boards as they are collecting dust in my basement - unfortunately I live in Atlanta. Good luck - and I wouldn't give anyone who quoted you such a ridiculous price the time of day.
Hello, I live in CT and back in Feb 2001 I put a deposit down on a DC. Since the dealer didn't have what I wanted on the lot I told them to order mine. After a week they told me that my order had been accepted into the computer system at Toyota out in CA and that they would be building/assembling my truck (starting) March 12 and that I should be getting it end of the month or very beginning of April. Well this didn't happen so I called my reliable Toyota salesman and asked him what was going on. He had no delivery date for me and now he tells me he needs to talk to the District Toyota Rep and he will get back to me with a definite delivery date. This just doesn't sound right to me. How can he tell me that my car will be assembled on March 12 and it is now April 11 and he doesn't have a clue on where it is? Is Toyota's production process that screwed up or is my Toyota salesman giving me a bunch of BS?????????
Any feedback would be helpful. And any suggestions to speed up the process would be appreciated!
i also ordered my tacome dec 15 and they told me 6-8 weeks. i took delivery on march 21st. i put down 500 bucks on my amex and demanded a refund which they did return. when it finally came in they called and i said i was still interested but only paying 500 over invoice which they agreed to. don't let them jerk you around.
My understanding is Toyota doesn't do custom orders. I think the salesman is feeding you a line of BS. They can pull up a list of what is being built and the ETA. They then find what matches what you want and request that vehicle. I'll bet this is what he is doing while he is telling you he is special ordering it. If he can't find a match or if it gets scooped up by someone else, then he has to start over. In TX, vehicles go from the factory to the distributer (Gulf States Toyota) where options like running boards, bedliners, moonroofs, etc. are added. When I bought my truck, the salesman showed me on the computer what trucks were being built and when and with what options (not sure if this was at the factory level or the distributer level). I had to wait for the truck that had the options I wanted to be built. Lucky for me, the truck I wanted with the options I wanted showed up in a matter of weeks. My dealer had a breakdown of trucks with options by percentage. For instance, my truck with the color/options I wanted fell in the 5% catagory which means only 5% of the trucks being made were done with the colors/options I wanted. I talked to a couple different dealers and got different stories from all of them. I wanted a limited but they aren't offered in TX, supposedly due to Toyota marketing thinking they wouldn't sell as well down here. (Idiots) One dealer told me he could get me one but it could take up to 6 months because he would have to go either through the factory or another dealer in CA. But then when I went back a week later, he said there was no way he could get it. Hope that helps.
Along the lines of akg's post above, has any one heard whether a manual transmission option will be available for the 4x4 DC in the 2002 model? Thanks.
I'm debating over getting the Toyota DC vs the Dodge Dakota QC, any input would be appreciated. I like the looks of the DC. I'm interested in the 2wd Prerunner V6, is the TRD package worth the price and how does its ride compare to the suspension on the regular Prerunner DoubleCab. Most of my driving will not be off road, but do go hunting in Colorado from time to time. Where I think the rear locking diff. would come in handy. Also does the TRD package offer a better ride on rough roads. What kind of gas mileage are you getting in the city and on the highway, this would probably be a big factor in my decision.
Kcowboy, Read up in the beginning of this topic. I told my story back in late Nov. early Dec. when I bought the Toyota (I love it). I actually had a DDQC for a whole 10 months before I traded it in on the Tacoma DC. It was, hands down, the worst vehicle I ever owned. Customer service was awful. I was at the dealer weekly. I had 1 TSB problem (Grinding noise in the front wheel) they tried 4 times to fix and couldn't, even theough the TSB was older than the build date of the truck. I had 3 other warranty problems (weatherstripping falling off, trans filler hose leak - recalled for that - and potential brake failure - also recalled). None of them insignificant. Every time I went to the dealer, I had to make an appointment, wait, show them the problem. They'd keep the truck all day, then call me to pick it up. They'd tell me they confirmed the problem and ordered the parts, so then I had to bring it back again and wait again. And then usually they didn't get it right anyway. I learned from the Dakota forum on Edmunds that this is very typical for Dodge - that way the dealers can bill the factory twice for every warranty repair, nevermind convenience to the customer.
I got about 11 mpg with the 4.7 l 4x4 auto. I'm getting 19 in my Toyota. It handles far better, accelerates nearly as well, and actually has 200 lbs more payload capacity. I have 2 kids in car seats and they fit in the back seat exactly like they did in the Dak. The only size difference is that the back seat is narrower, so only a small adult can sit in between the car seats. I don't notice the lost 1.5" in the bed. I do notice the overall 13" less length when I'm parking. (Yes the Dak has a very long hood!) Approach and departure angles are much better with less overhang, too. Get the Toyota. Its cheaper, too.
I just checked with one of the Toyota dealers I work with and she indicated that you can custom order this vehicle. You need to give them a couple of months to order, produce and deliver, but it can be done.
For kccowboy: Bought my DC 4x4 TRD V6 last month and I couldn't be happier with this truck. I do a lot of hunting so I go off road a lot and in my opinion the TRD package is as advertised. It really tames those rough roads. Everyone I've taken off-road with me have been impressed with the ride. On highway the ride is firm but comfortable and it corners well. On my second tankful of gas I got approx. 20 mpg highway carrying about 300 lbs. of gear. The 190 up V6 suits me just fine although I do plan on having it turbo charged in the near future. Also, the Toy has a 5/60 power train warranty while the others offer a 3/36. I think if you decide on the Toy you will not regret it. I absolutely love mine.
I've talked to 3 dealers around the Kansas City Area and it looks like I'm not able to purchase a Tacoma DC for less that $1000 over invoice. Also they did a 7 state search and couldn't find a LL package with 2wd. My options are to order one or settle for a IX or LX package. Has anyone in the area found better deals?
Not to be too jerky but the CA plant is in Fremont, CA; the heart of the Bay Area and one of the most severly affected areas of the power outages The crates come in via Oakland on slow boats.
I don't work for Toyota but I'm guessing when the power goes off over there it probably causes them days if not weeks to get back on a normal production schedule after just 1-2 hours of down time. It kinda sucks when your ship yards lose power, then your plant loses power, then your coffee pot loses power. I would imagine all that equipment doesn't just come back on either (ok...well mayb the coffee pot).
Maybe our Leadership was wrong about CA power problems not affecting the rest of the nation? Ignore the last comment since I don't want to stray the topic too far.
Hang in there with the dealer, get several quotes and do your homework on Edmunds, Kelly Blue Book, and Consumer Reports. I bought a 01 D.C. 4x4 in Feb. from Savannah (GA), Toyota for $500 over invoice. A lot of phone calls to other dealer and staying firm pays off. 2001 Double Cab 4x4 Limited Lunar Mist TRD 18 MPG in the City We love the truck; our last Toyota truck was a 1985 4x4 deluxe. Absolutely bulletproof! That is why we came back to the double cab, Toyota has been selling the Double Cab for years everywhere but the USA. Good Luck.

We went over the 1000 mile point last week and decided to take our DC on a 600 mile roundtrip drive. On the way there we were driving into a stiff wind with gusts up to 40 mph. We got 18.5 miles per gallon. I never used cruise and was always between 65-80 mph. On the way back all the winds had died down and there was virtually no wind at all. We got 21 mpg travelling about 75 mph the whole way. Both directions we used air conditioning. I hope I can keep getting 21 or better as the engine continues to break in. In town I am getting about 19.5 to 19.8 mpg. The V6 in this Toyota is absolutely awesome.
Trust me I could talk up Toyota Taco dc, but a sad story just came to lit. My new dc has a broken strut with less then 2,100 miles, hasent been off road or even towed the boat or jet ski's yet! Yes it is under warranty but!!. My 97 had zero problems. Any one else had this happen?.

Speed Control $255
