The main Santa Fe topics in the Owner's club message board are actually linked from the SUVs message board. Since the "problems" topic has just been created, it has not been linked yet.

The next round of IIHS 40mph offset crash tests will be involve the various small SUVs. This test is far more demanding of the vehicle's structure, and more representative of real world conditions than the NHTSA's flat barrier test (not many people crash their vehicles into concrete walls). The Santa Fe may be included, so stay tuned...

Open the drivers' door and look at the bottom right side of the door frame. There should be some stickers there, and the DOM. Hope this helps.

I posted this question on the T-H-C.org Santa Fe forum as well, and I thought I will ask here as well:

My LX-V6 AWD has 6,500 miles on it, and so far so good, the only annoying oddity is the inability of some gas station pumps to fully fill the tank due to excessively high pressure.

I am curious if anyone out there has significantly higher miles on their SF's yet, and how they are holding up?

I have read all the posts on the reported problems on several of the SF forums, so I am wondering how the original Oct-Nov '2000 owners are doing?

    Please let us know.

    Thanks.

My Santa Fe date 10/2000 too. But I got mine to drive nearly the end of January. So I have a little of 3k miles on it. So far nothing wrong! The love the ride now then before I bought it. Accelerate more easy and ride go smoother than before.

Just passed 7,500 miles on my LX. No problems really. I did have a lock actuator go bad on the tail door. No realy big deal. really like my Sante Fe.

My husband and I both bought our SFs in October, and so far, we've had no problems whatsoever. Made it through the rough Iowa winterstorms and ice without so much as a slip or slide. Although, my husband did drive my LX into the side of the garage. Didn't do much to the car (it did sound really bad, though), only $40 for a paint job. And have I mentioned that someone spun out in our parking lot and crashed into my husband's GLS's rear bumper? Broke all of the guy's tailights, but left mere scratches on the bumper. Can you say "tough car"?

    Hi Marc!
Thanks for your reply! Now I am very sure that I'm not paying too much for my SF.
I never doing any market research for what price I should offer the dealer in last November because the SF is too new, I'm very impressed by its excellent comfortability & adequate power & standard features. After I test drive all Escape, Tribute & SF (I didn't go for Forester, because just don't like it shape, it is my personal taste!
Seem like I born to hate all Subaru cars appearance! Perhaps Forester is handling better than SF & have a proven safety records, but still think I made a right choice - Picking SF. Today I have drove my sister's Pathfinder for almost the whole afternoon in the mountain area to search for a house (She was looking for a new home in my neighbourhood). Her 2-year-old Nissan Pathfinder (CDN$28,500) performance is hardly can compared to my SF. (I don't know what happen when off-road? May be good for off-road. Who know? But quite honest, I will reject all off-road flower delivery, even they paid me $100 for tips.

Thank you to all of you in Edmunds SF Forum to share the
SF's cons & pros experiences with me. The SF is not a perfect car, there are some minor problems happened in my SF during these few months that I didn't report in the Forum.

Now I post it as follows:

    1) The air-cond's cooling fan motor was found faulty (It has noise when the air-cond is on)about 1 week after I purchased my SF, the dealer replaced it with a new fan motor in 1/2 hr)

    2) The front hood can push halfway open by hand / pop up when I drove at above 100km on highway, the dealer replaced with a new locking mechanism.

That is all the troubles so far on my SF. Oh! almost forget to tell u another problem --
that is too many car drivers on the road look/stare at my SF & me! Enjoys your new SF & remember u don't have to drive slow in highway (keep under 120km is OK) & only do your oil change at 6,000Km (I used Synthetics oil).)

I love it when I drive, and people stare & point @ my SF-what an attention getter.
Finally got my sf back from my husband.
question- do i need to put some sort of protectant on my leather-the manual says no, just soap & water to clean.
I already put scotchguard on my floormats, just wondering bout the seats.
Also, what generation is my sf considered? b-day is 2/18/01. 267 miles & loving it-Happy driving!

Sales tax in Suffolk County L.I is 8.25 in Nassau County it is 8.50. I paid MSRP + tax + registration. I believe the sales tax you have to pay depends on where you live. So if you live in another state or County that is the sales tax you have to pay.

I have a question for everyone about my SF.

The engine on my santafe is being being replaced, does this means I have to have it registered at DMV again? I assume I have to because it will have a new VIN or engine number right???

Can I reimburse this to Hyundai since it's a result of a warranty service?

I guess I have to update my insurance company about it too huh?

Viperu, how's your SF doing now?

    Jericho
  • hung0820hung0820 Member Posts: 426
No! Replacement the engine have nothing to do with the VIN Number! The Vin Number on your car was stick inside the windshield at the driver side. There should be a metal or bronze label with the VIN number. Unless that number is change otherwise you don't have to do anything else.

NO DMV or Insurance require to update. Just drive the car as usual.

I am guessing the SF AWD will do well in the rollover tests with all that AWD drive weight on the bottom bringing down the center of gravity, the wide track, lower roof height and lower ground clearance than other SUV"s

Well I found out today that the dealership received the new engine and was in the process of finishing taking out the old one.If all goes right,I should have it back Friday or Saturday. So total downtime would be one week. Not to shabby.I'll be glad to get rid of the Mitsubishi Galant that I have for a rental car(I turned in the Caddy, gas was killing me!)and get back to my Santa Fe and start the breakin process all over again!LOL!!!I'll let you know the final result.

My manual states to perform oli change every 3750 miles. I hear others say every 7500 miles. Which is correct for V-6?
  • jericho_avejericho_ave Member Posts: 37
Steve, one week downtime is OK, you're lucky.
Mine brokedown last March 17(Sat) then I brought it Mar 20(Tue) I'm still not 100% sure if I'll have it this sat(Apr 7), if I do it'll be three weeks since. They say they are test driving it and they're being thorough, which is good.

so if we're both lucky we'll have our cars back.

Does anyone here have an experience on claims reimbursement with Hyundai? I paid out the towing company with my own money then mailed a reimbursement claim to Hyundai as instructed by the Roadside assistance center. How long does it take to process?

We took delivery of our SF GLS last night. We are going on a spring ski trip tomorrow in the Laurentians with it. I'm anxious to see how it does on the twisty roads and hills! I've put about 100 km on it today, and it's hard to drive without smerking, this thing is REALLY fun to drive. The styling of the SF is incredible, it really is a great looking vehicle. Will keep you posted.

looking for mud flaps that say santa fe on them any idea where to find them. also wind deflectors
for the driver and passenger side. By the way I am still happy with my little 2.4L gl That every one say is a waste for the weight of the car, and saving 2000 dollars over the gls isn't bad either.

Anybody heard anything about the Santa Fe's engine/drivetrain makeover? This is hot because of the potential benefit to the environment and getting away from expensive gasoline slurping. I agree with squiremarc, the Santa Fe is one great looking vehicle!

I think our SF is the most beautiful looking SUV in the world!

Front - Looks so powerful but eye-sweetening.

    Sides - Classy + elegant.

    Back - Star-war style: Star-Trek look.

Inside - Batman car / Space ship looks.

    Comfortability - President class.

Price + warranty - Under price! This not much/no profit promotional price won't last long if Hyundai think they had turned its total imagine from cheap to excellent.

    R E L I A B I L I T Y - Who care? (with this great warranty!)

Marketing Strategy - Suicide style. (It may be the final attempt for Hyundai to become a well respected world-class auto maker. (Either Success or Die)

PS: Today on the road when waiting to turn left in an intersection face-to-face with a new black SF. The lady driver is waiting to turn left on the opposite lane too. We smile & wave hand on each other, & raised our big thumb at each other saying that we had made a smart choice. I think she is very happy with her SF, she looked very proud of her SF.

I took delivery on my SF2001 GLS with AWD and ABS 1 week ago. I paid $100 below MSRP but that was with extended negotiations on my part and agreeing to take delivery the same day. Most dealers are not budging from the MSRP at least not on Long Island. I have owned many car over the years and I find the SF one of the most enjoyable to drive.
I find the exterior styling unique and classy. The interior roomy, elegant and functional.
The most enjoyable part of driving my SF is when I pass a Nissan Pathfinder or similar SUV and
know they paid about $10,000 more than my similar equiped SF!
As a rule most car experts say not to buy a car in it's first production year. I think in this case
the Santa Fe has to much to offer to pass up. Throw in the Hyundai warranty and road side assistance how can you go wrong. I love my Santa Fe!!

I just purchased a Santa Fe GLS AWD. I Love it.
My only complaint is the Radio that it comes with . It is fairly basic and the sound is not the greatest even by stock radio standards. I was under the impression that the GLS and LX models came with the CD/Cassette player. The reason for this is because when you look inside the brochure, they indicate 3 times that it does. In the interior dash photo of the LX it clearly shows the CD /Cassette player. In addition the body copy in the brochure states it comes with CD/Cassette as a stock item and inside the specs table in the back of the brochure, it indicates the same for the GLS and the LX.In the specs table it says the AM/FM/Cassette player comes stock with the Santa Fe which is obviously the 4 cylinder model if you read the other stock /optional items.
My question is.. What model Santa Fe do you have and what stereo did it come with? Is there an issue with the radio I am not aware of?
Thank You in advance for your replies.

I have the Santa Fe LX FWD and it has a pretty good am fm cd stereo system, I thought it came with a cd and cassette also , but mine only has the cd, no casette. I just purchased a 6 disc cd changer and will install it this week.

I hope this answers your question.

I saw wbdave's message #1645 (about contacting Jennifer in the East Coast Hyundai office) and was wondering if this might help me in getting the car I really want. I am looking to get a Santa Fe GLS 2WD. I signed a pretty good contract with a NY area dealer for $300 above invoice knowing full well that I doubted that they could get the car I really wanted, so some "inside" help would be great.

    Hyundai Reputation:
Hyundai reputation have been very different compare to the past. Especially when it comes to the Santa Fe. This new type of SUV was tremendously well built and and involve with many technologies. The latest (which it is now) Santa Fe are well reliable since most of problem have been solve. My Santa Fe LX with production date 10/2000 was very good till now still have no problem. I only have a little of 3k miles but I can tell you that is getting better and better after the miles get higher. 10/100 warranty is basically covered the engine, transmission, and transaxles. This is the most important of warranty. If you have any problem in the future then they will replace it with the latest update engine, transmission, and transaxles cover by warranty. Nothing to worried since 10/100 is a long way to go. Everyone is happy with the Santa Fe as you read along. Reliability is still question but I am confident since the warranty is the major factor roll to me. I love my Santa Fe and 2 thumbs-up..

    Stereo system:
Yes! The H290 cd and tape combo stereo is available at nearly all Hyundai dealers. This stereo system is very good because it does have the EQ as well. Very nice looking but add the 8 discs cd changer and get more "listen to ear"....

I am looking at buying a Santa Fe in 2002. I have

Just took a look on Ebay for Santa Fe goodies, and there is a CD-Rom training/service CD rom on the auction block as well as an electrical/service repair manual. So, anyone who is into the nuts and bolts of their Santa Fe, you might want to look at these items. BTW...I am not the seller, just an observer.

Hi all. Been away on business for a few weeks, back now. My reception still sucks. I have tried 2 things so far: I bought a Y adapter and ran a 2nd (self-install windshield wire antenna) up the windshield... It did not help at all. Then I bought an FM Booster... improvement was marginal at best. I'm wondering if the connection between the window & the wire running up to the radio might not be snug? Don't really want to rip the panel off myself. I took it to Hyundai and had them look... but they said it was ok... and the guy was finished WAY TOO FAST. I'm thinking either they did not look, or they misunderstood me and looked at the connection up front behind the radio. Gonna stop at the dealer again when I have some time.

Not sure how the IIHS 5mph crash test work. I have seen a lots of people parking here in San Francisco hitting each other bumpers about 5mph or so. Still no damage to the car. Last time I went to eat at KFC and the lady with the Cadillac parking behind my Santa Fe hitting my bumper and I saw it in front of my eyes with the car shaking but nothing was happen. At that time I don't have the rear bumper protector and convinced to buy the rear bumper which I have it install now.

If the car just hit the bumper and the cost replacement should not be reach over $1000 plus because replacement the bumper was not that expensive. Unless they hit the grill, light, etc. not the bumper. "Therefore, I am not sure how this test was done and what do they crash into"?

Here is the average damage on the IIHS reports check out your car!
    X5=$591, Blazer=$1143, Durango=$1522, Explorer=$1457, Passport=$1321, Trooper=$2781, Cherokee=$1445, Discovery=$1394, RX300=$877, M class=$816, Montero=$2290, Pathfinder=$2238, Xterra=$2037, Escape/Tribute=$485, Santa Fe=$1287, Amigo=$1390, Wrangler=$714, Sportage=$1900, Forester=$573, Vitara=$1411, and RAV4=$2003.

They money was the issued to me because it is all depend where you buy the parts and labor charge. Most of the latest model does not have the real price on the parts anyway and where to they calculated from? Sample: The options on the Santa Fe: If I would bought the the cargo organizers, rear deflectors, etc. from the dealers here in California would cost me 3-4 times more than if I would bought is at www.tischerhyundai.com.

My car have the front/rear bumper protector and don't know how is that work with this test? What's your opinion?
  • hung0820hung0820 Member Posts: 426
    Warranty:
Changing the oil and transmission fluid will not harm your vehicle if you use the same kind of fluid as the dealer use. Most likely the warranty is still cover but keep record of what you do on the maintenance book that they provided. I never find this kind of problem in the past. Should be no problem is doing is right.

    Reception:
Have you try to use a different radio? Have you try to compare with other car reception on the same location? Go to the dealers with another SF and test the reception on the lots and compare. If different then alert problem to the dealer tech.
  • psalms121psalms121 Member Posts: 4
Thanks for the reply hung. You say that I have to use the same oil as the dealer. What do they use?
Personally I plan on using Mobil 1 full synthetic.
  • billbo1970billbo1970 Member Posts: 76
You should have no problem doing your oil changes yourself, and the type of oil you use should not matter either. The only thing you will need to do is KEEP THE FLAP FROM THE OIL FILTER and pen in the date & mileage of the oil-change. Then you have physical proof that you have kept up with the routine maintenance. I personally prefer the Castro Syntech over the mobil1, and Fram filters. Good Luck! Nice passage by the way. :)

Hung: I am planning to go to the dealer and listen to the radio in another Santa Fe.... but it will only be for my own information. I have changed the stock radio to a pioneer deh3300. Since it is no longer stock, they will probably blame the reception on that now. But for my own information I want to hear another santa fe. If reception is better, I am guessing the plug coming off the glass must not be tight. otherwise either the wire or antenna is bad. I'm hoping it is the plug.

i havent been here for a while....
our SF is doing great. 2500 miles and no problems yet.

i STILL havent bought my wood kit yet though... procrastination.

anyway one of the wood dash places said they would send me a sample of all thier materials for $9, no big deal....

but does anyone have any good pictures of the wood kit installed on thier santa fe. i would love to see something other than a 1 inch x 1 inch image.

was looking at rims the other day and might go with some 18's. has anyone come across any photos of these cars with aftermarket rims?

and how about aftermarket parts.. any more manufacturers coming out with anything?

i still want those clear 'lexus' style lights.

    Oil Change:
The first oil change should be the same as the manufacture/dealer oil because the car is not really going into a real break-in period. After the 1st oil change then go for whatever you like. This won't effect on your warranty at all. However, I find that most of the new car does not really require the right type of oil for the real break-in period. "Not sure about the SF either". Therefore, I rather be safe then not. Not sure what type of oil do the dealer use on SF either but call the dealer and find it out.

    Stereo:
Changing the stereo system may not be a helpful situation at all. However, you can still can compare it with other SF and point out the problem to the tech.

    Wood Dash:
I have a 17 pieces of wood dash install in my car made by Florida Auto Trims. Best quality and plenty of color to choose from. I have requested for more pieces add to this set and they are working on it. You can find out more information about this wood dash at www.autodash.com or the other set of 26 pieces, low quality and less color at www.wooddashfactory.com.

    Rims:
Do not change the rims for now! This is just my suggestion. You will waste more gas. However, change it when the current tires is die/burn and then upgrade it. This way you won't waste the current tires.

I've had my heart set on a GL with the V6 or a base model GLS, but I test drove a V4 on Sunday and I found it handled great! The engine was a little noisy when going up an on-ramp, but that may have been due to me not being familiar with gas pedal. It seems that almost everyone on the board has the V6, does anyone have a V4 that can relate some info? Engine just right, too small, problems? For the record, I'd be doing almost all highway driving and not towing anything, the most I'd have in the Santa Fe is my wife, our daughter, and my drums :-)

Also, the dealership I went to was VERY pushy, to the point of being arrogant. They kept using the "well, we get very few of these!" to try and push me into the car that day (after I walked in the door stating I was NOT going to buy for another month or so), and kept claiming they could give me a BIG DISCOUNT. Yeah, their big discount was to offer the base GL with option package 2 for $21K and then come down when I literally jumped when I saw the cost! Sticker inspection shows their price of $19,700, but the sales rep kept telling me it was really $21K. I *really* like these cars, but I most definitely think I'll be shopping around. A dealership 30 miles away had 15 in stock to their 4. Thanks!

I was hit hard in the rear, had no body damage at all but to replace the rear bumper was $1200. I was hit by a small Mazda 326 who had the hood buckeled up, grill smashed, etc.. I am not sure if the SF is good or bad in slow speed crashes but the test did not look weel for it.

TO RUSSTOPHER: I bought a GL(package 2) about a month ago for 18,000, I like the four cyl for the gas mileage and it is good for what I need. It has enough power with manual transmission as long as you don't shift with RPM's too low (they suggest around 2000-2500rpm) I find it lacks power shifting at those RPM's, I shift around 3000. Checked with my Sunfire which is an automatic (which shows rpms too) to see where the automatic transmission shift and it does around 3000 too, anyone have an opinion on shifting?? Also I find that the A/C pulls a bit with the 4cyl, does anyone know if it does the same on the 6cyl?

TO EVERYONE: About the hesitation, I took it in today and they called me about noon and said that it didn't give them any codes and they couldn't get it to act up. I asked them about the timing belt thing that everybody was talking about on here and he said he would check into it and get back to me. At 5:30 when I picked it up he said the tech called Hyundia tech support and told them about replacing the timing belt cover, so they ordered the part and said they would inspect the whole assembly when they took it apart to replace the cover. He also told me that the timing belt could be causing the hesitation and loss of power, but wouldn't have shown up on the computer. So thank you all for informing me about this problem otherwise I wouldn't have know to ask about it. If you guys can think of anything else that would help or recommend another dealer they could contact who has dealt with this problem please let me know.

Still love my Santa Fe and the warranty too!! It's a fun car to drive and I like being the center of attention, LOL!!

    Read my post #1474 on 4cyl [5speed].

As far as price. Don't let them jerk you around. Take your time and visit other dealers and DON'T tell them you're buying in a month; they'll just blow you off and give you some BS price to hold you over and give the old "we'll give you a great deal WHEN you're ready to buy". I know this because I went through the same nonsense.

I paid 17,700 [plus tax, title]. Price included cross rails, carpet floor mats, fog lights, front/rear mudguards, rear deflector, cargo mat, pin striping [and installation for the mudguards, fog lights and rear deflector]. The options package you mentioned is actually a "standard" part of the 4cyl vehicle package [you can't get it without it]! Don't forget I have a 5speed, the auto version will add ~800 to the price.

Other dealers wanted close to 1K over what I paid for the same package. The only other thing I'm considering having added is a sunroof ;)

    Good Luck!
  • tonyg6tonyg6 Member Posts: 48
Did you have a problem with hesitation to begin with or did you decide to ask the dealer to check out the belt based on owner responses?

If your vehicle hesitated was is a certain speed/shift intervals or was it random [even while cruising]? Did it happen with ac on/off?

As far as shifting I also find shifting between 2500 and 3000 does the trick. The only time I'll shift at around 2K is if I'm on a flat road and cruising.

PS: Almost forgot others have mentioned hesitation related to the "crank shaft sensor". Those folks had V6 so I don't know if it could affect the 4cyl [read post #1175].
  • steckswifesteckswife Member Posts: 8
I had the hesitation problem first. Then I started searching for what the problem might be and heard edmonds.com was a good place to look and here is where I found myself. It usually happened in 4th gear cruising around 45-50mph steady speed the it would just cut out jerk a couple times then pick back up. This only happened twice. Last time I was pulling out onto the highway in second gear and accelerating at about 30mph (more importantly seems to happen about 2700rpm in either gear)and it just cut out jerked a couple times then again it picked back up. The A/C was off and it just happens randomly.
With the A/C pulling, I was just wondering if the A/C pulls as bad on the V6. I have a 4cyl Sunfire which you can feel it pull on the engine when it kicks in. But there again if I run at a little higher rpms it doesn't seem to bother too much.

Can you give us some stats as to when your vehicle started showings signs of engine skip?

How many miles/months did it have when it started?
  • steckswifesteckswife Member Posts: 8
It's only a month old now. Started doing it about 900 miles and about a 2 weeks after buying it. The first time it happened I marked it up to break-in working out the bugs. The manufacture date is 10/2000. Does anyone know if this is a first or second generation engine??
  • loveit2loveit2 Member Posts: 3
I have a 4 cycle santa fe automatic the jerking I feel is when I start off to fast its seem to jump into passing gear and rev to high , also when driving to slow in 3 gear its jerk, but I was told its the transmission shifting down. have 2000 mile on it ,when I bring it in for the oil change I will motion it to them also about the timing belt issue. other than that no other problem with the vehicle. thanks for all the input on the santa fe its been very helpful.
  • pro212pro212 Member Posts: 44
Most manufacturers do not recommend a change to synthetic until after 7500 miles when the valves are fully seated. Apparently synthetic oil is so slick that sometimes during the break in period it prevents valves from fully seating. Valves should be fully seated by 7500 miles. I change my synthetic oil every 5000 miles but could probably push it to 7500 miles.

    Manufacture date:
10/2000 is more like 3rd generation and I have this generation too. 11-12/2000 would be 4th generation and any date afterward call next generation.

    4 cyclinders:
Yes! The timing belt was an issued and the manufacture are aware of this problem. Have them check quickly and fix the problem.

    Oil Issued:
Like I said before! If you do the 1st oil change then change it with the same oil as the dealers. After the 1st oil change, then use synthetic if you like.

You can see the 5mph bumper test video footage here:
    http://www.msnbc.com/news/554783.asp

Note that all but one fo the vehicles tested received a poor (including the Sante Fe). If you watch the video clip (at the top of the screen), you'll see why. All allowed for excessive damage at only walking speed.

Remember that there are underlying structures behind the bumper covers in most vehicle. If that gets damaged, the cost of replacement and repairs is high.
