    DRL-Daytime Running Lights:
I have checked with the Hyundai Web Tech and it seems like there is a wire harness and type of fuel/relay that need to convert the DRL working properly. I have asked HDK to check for me about converting it. This is going to be a good project for me to play with...I'll get back with this later..

    Interior Sample:
Basically go the the dealers and requested for the Santa Fe Manual/Boolet and look for the sample. Also look into the car as well.

    Company Split:
Politic role game! Daimler want to get more! Mitsubishi basically need help! Stock Involvement Game! Who is a good guy and who is the bad guy and we all know?

No call yet, but I am putting the Santa Fe back in the shop...it is a first generation..

I told my dealer to fix it, replace the motor, or envoke my states lemon laws on this vehicle
which I have met the basic requirements to begin...

that's old news. interesting to note that less than 24 hrs. after the story went out, Reuters reported that DCX officially denied the Automotive News story in a prepared statement, but nobody picked it up. I wonder why. DCX said that the joint venture talk is going well.

Sounds like no warranty work was performed on your car. You're supposed to get a telephone and mail-in survey after each warranty service visit.

I bought a german CD changer, which works on any fm stereo radio, and intend to install it. I called my hyundai dealer and ask to buy an electrical wiring guide and maintenance manual. They said they cannot get one, they said they have the shop manuals for their service techs but cannot sell them.
Does any one know where I can tap into a 12volt circuit, and a 12 volt circuit that is activated through the ignition key. I know I can tap into the radio supply , but thought that might create an overload with the radio and cd changer working together. They do work together with this cd changer. Any help would be appreciated.
Or better yet where I can get a maintenance manual, that includes the wiring diagrams. The Hyundai tech site dies not go into the wiring only installation.

hey chrome, go to this site,http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/

and look in the ETM section. I am no electrition, but it shows all the electrical schematics. if you cant find info there, try the Shop tab, and look around for electrical info. QUESTION FOR ALL..if I have had warrenty work done, should I be contacted by HMA ? Been to shop twice and so far ..no calls..no surveys..not even a thank you for buying their vehicle. Just curious. Hey HUNG..I think the DRL issue is one that they will not wanna clear up themselves. All the manuals, brochures do not list them but the WEBTECH site has them listed. Weird !!

We bought our Santa Fe LX AWD back in January and had the dealer install the official Hyundai trailer hitch on the car before we took ownership of it. Now, barely 3 months late the thing is rusting. If anyone out there is considering buying a Santa Fe and wants to have the Hyundai trailer hitch installed - DON'T!! It's not worth the hassle. I had the hitch installed for using a bike rack - no other trailer. To pay approx $250.00 for that piece of junk is a crime. Had I seen the hitch before the dealer put it on, I would have gone with an aftermarket one. This thing is designed so that the exhaust comes out of the tailpipe about 1 inch behind the trailer hitch. I contacted the dealer and of course they said they could not do anything about it - the hitch warranty does not cover rust! I called the 800 number in the owners manual and was told the same thing. A regional service manager called me today and offered as a 'goodwill gesture' to replace the thing at no charge. But, needless to say, it will probably rust out again in a few months. I would like my money refunded and look for an aftermarket one. The manager told me that any aftermarket hitch will require removal from the vehicle to get at the spare tire. Does anyone know if indeed that is true? I am happy with the vehicle as a whole but the lack of concern by the dealer and customer relations has me so pissed off that I doubt if I will ever own another Hyundai or recommend them to anyone. Thanks for letting me rant!

If you run across any "better" stories, please link to them. It is interesting to see how they are supposedly sorting things out with DC, Mitsubishi, etc.

The other article I linked to a while ago made it sound like Hyundai Auto was plenty strong enough to go it alone, but I guess strategic alliances can be beneficial. Thanks!

I only see dealers in my area with the 4 cylinder Santa Fe's. The GLS models with 4WD and the LX models are rare. I am hoping that the floodgates will open up this April. I am waiting for my White LX with ABS/Traction Control and Leather Heated Seats. It's been already 9 weeks and nothing yet. I was told that there have been fewer GLS's and LX's shipped up here to New England. My Hyndai dealer told me that there should be more of these vehicles coming up here to N.J. in the next few weeks. I have a feeling that I will have to wait until May or June before I get mine. It seems that everytime the dealer looks at his allocation for me, there are NO LX's in the allocation. Just last week he checked the allocation sheet and he said that he was getting in just 2 GLS's. There were no LX's anywhere in the port on this allocation.
I would appreciate it if anybody here knows and can tell me when the "FULLY LOADED" LX models will arrive in N.J. for delivery up here in Massachusetts.

I purchased an aftermarket Drawtite hitch for my Santa Fe 4WD LX, installed it myself - with help from my 13 year old son to lift it into position, and it fits PERFECTLY. All you have to do is remove the 2 rear tie down hooks, remove the spare tire temporarily until the hitch is in place, and loosen the muffler from it's rubber supports to get the hitch into position. Once installed - replace the muffler rubber supports and spare tire! All you see is the square hole of the receiver - and no other part of the hitch! The exhaust is nowhere close to the hitch - so it shouldn't rust as you say the Hyundai-installed hitch did on yours.
If I were you - I'd insist on Hyundai replacing their hitch with the Drawtite (it cost me $160 total!) - or get your money back. Good luck!

I've had U-Haul install hitches on my vehicles (not a Santa Fe) and they are always better than the dealer.

If the dealer won't refund your money, get the new one, and give it a GOOD THICK COAT of rustoleum & a clearcoat over that. That should help alot.

    Hi gtgtcobra,

I too am having the same problem in the Southeast. I was told a white LX was coming in several weeks ago, it turned out to be a GLS. I want a white one with everything, no one remotely close to me has any.

Is there any hope for us?

Have been following this website for the past month and find the info most informative. I just put a deposit on a used 2001 SF GLS Sandstone 6cyl 4WD with 3100 miles on it for $17,900.Non Hyundai dealer claims that the SF was too small for was traded for a larger SUV. Took it out for a test drive & it performed well & checked the carfax which didn't reveal anything, other than it was registered in Dec, 2000. Does anyone know if warranty is transferrable? How can I tell if this vehicle has ABS
  • hung0820hung0820 Member Posts: 426
    ABS:
When turn on the key power the ABS should light up. Also when you buy the car, the dealer should give you the price tag which they stick on the window of the car. Within that price tag there should be ABS listed. Only if this car is an ABS equip..

    Tow Hitch:
Tow hitch should be painted with clear coat if this type of hitch needed. Otherwise the aftermarket products are much better such as the U-Haul (High quality). I am sure you can find many aftermarket good quality.

    LX Model:
LX model is very hard to find now because there are lots of people know about this SUV right now. Therefore, they are very hot and people often put deposit for it. Especially the LX with TCS+ABS...There is a good chance to buy the LX but you have made a deposit. Certain region is harder to get and therefore you definitely need to made a deposit. "I made a deposit too"..

The warrenty goes with the vehicle, however, the powertrain drops to 5yrs. or 60000 miles to the second owner, unless the second owner is an immediate family member. This is from the day the vehicle was put into service. You can go to a HYUNDAI dealer and purchase either the powertrain warrenty or a bumper to bumper extended warrenty,(HPP plan)good for 10yrs or 100000 miles. The powertrain one should run about $800.00 or so,the other about $1300.00. Bob

Just off the topic here a bit...

Any chance your techs could update us on the 4/6cyl timing belt problems?

Has/will Hyundai make a formal recall or will problems/breakdowns be addressed as isolated cases?

It would be terrible for Hyundai to get another bad (quality) rap around the time it's trying to make a market comeback, especially with a SUV ;)

    Thanks!

Are there any SF's available in the upstate NY (Dutchess County to Danbury CT) area? I stopped at a few dealers and they don't have any GLS or LX's or delivery dates. In fact most dealerships said they GLS's and LX's were all customer orders and I wouldn't even be able to test drive one unless I put a deposit down to hold one so when it came in I could test drive it!! Are these SUV's that popular? Their reliability is unknown correct?
  • hung0820hung0820 Member Posts: 426
Yes! These Suv is very popular since the end of last year. I have to make a deposit for nearly 3 months in order to get the top of line model. You are not very new here so far as many of us here made deposit in order to get this SUV. Yes! reliability is unknown but warranty was the best and therefore most us don't really care much about reliability. So far most of us like the car very much and very happy with it. I have nearly 4k mile on my Santa Fe and nothing happen so far. "Actually the car even run better, smoother, and faster too"!

We can not gaurantee the reliability but the 10/100k miles and 5 years roadside assistance will save this matter. I am very confident that this SUV is a very reliable car. Time will tell! I have even heard that someone have this car over 15k miles and still nothing happen.

Talked with the owner of the dealership where I bought my 4WD LX, last November, (TRA Hyundai in Knoxville, TN), and he had only one standard, 4 cylinder, Nordic White, with ABS on the lot. (I was in there because I discovered that my cigarette lighter didn't work and they had to order a new unit. It took them 4 days to get it in. Also my first noted problem after 6,800 miles.)

He told me that the reason that there is a nationwide shortage of the Santa Fe's is because Hyundai is putting diesel engines in them at home and selling them there like hot cakes. He said they don't have the extended warranty in Korea and they don't have to ship them halfway around the world. They're making money at home and it has caused the shortage in the US.

I called my dealer here today to find out about the next allocation which he is getting in. He told me that he was trying to find out from the Hyundai rep what two (2) Santa Fe models he was getting in. He told me that he was "UNABLE" to find out whether he is getting in two (2) GLS's or LX's. He is just getting 2 units of the Santa Fe's in within the next 2 to 3 weeks. This is not good. It seems that all the dealers up here in Massachusetts are just getting in no more than 2 to 3 of these Santa Fe models at a time. Niniety-Nine percent of the dealers in Massachusetts "DO NOT" have any stock of these vehicles. If they do get any of these vehicles in, they have already been ordered weeks before and are all pre-sold. If the allocation of these vehicles keeps happening this way, then I will never get my fully loaded Santa Fe LX. I have been waiting over 2 months now and I am going into my 10th week next week and still no Nordic White Santa Fe LX. I am very frustrated and I am very afraid that my vehicle will never come.
Does anybody here think that my vehicle will be here within the next 4 to 6 weeks? Do you think that eventually my Hyundai dealer is going to tell me that my Nordic White LX will be "IMPOSSIBLE" to get? I really want Nordic White and I want it in the fully loaded LX model. Do you think that I will realisticly get this vehicle anytime soon within the next 4 to 6 weeks? Or do you think that the wait will be longer? I am afraid that I will never get my vehicle with the availability problems of the LX model. Please tell me any information which you may have about when you think this particular model will be available here in Massachusetts.
  • gtgtcobragtgtcobra Member Posts: 268
I have my signed dealer order form for my Nordic White LX when I signed the deal and ordered the vehicle 10 weeks ago. I will wait for it, but the only thing that worries and concerns me is that my dealer will never get a Nordic White LX for me. What are the chances of this happening, even after waiting for my vehicle now for 10 weeks without any results? I really want Nordic White in the LX model. I DO NOT want any other color. Nobody up here in Massachusetts and in New England has any LX's or even any GLS's. If I am going to spend 23K I want the color and model of MY choice. Do you think the wait will be another 2 months or will I get my LX sooner? I want to get an idea of how long more I will have to wait for this vehicle to come. It seems that I am waiting forever. The dealer doesn't know when this vehicle will come in. Hyundai should do something to solve this availability problem. This is ridiculous.

Healey Bros in beacon had a couple last week (4cyl I think). You might also try Suresky out near peekskill or Healey bros up in middletown. I haven't checked either of them out recently, so I really don't know what they currently have (if anything at all)

DRL is mandatory in Canada; the shop manuals are for both US and Canadian model Santa Fes.

My sympathies to you gtgtcobra! Here in Austin, I put down 1000.00 "deposit"-just to hold a nordic white lx long enough for me to get over there and test drive it and make a decision about it. My check stayed there from Jan.3 to mid March. My husband decided one day to just go down and get our check back, and when he drove up, there was a Nordic White GLS.(they were getting ready to sell it)--Anyway-- We bought it and I had beautiful leather installed and seat heaters. In fact, I much prefer the custom leather as it is what's used in Mercedes etc. and it's got extra "cush". So, I probably paid slightly more to go this route, but I'm glad I did. You might consider transforming a GLS if the only thing extra you wanted was the heated leather seats. (I plan to add brushed stainless dash soon) Good luck!!!

Looks like a couple of "spiked" posts at consumer review.com are trying to attack the Santa Fe. Maybe some of us can put real reviews there to bring back the rating it deserves.

Dread, I went to Healey Bros in Beacon and they had one Sandstone V6 SF that came in Friday. Other 2-3 were 4cyl GL's. I don't care for Sandstone but I will check the other dealers you mentioned. Thanks again.

The dealer I bought my GLS (Canadian) SF from also stated that in his next allocation of SF's, he doesn't know what colors or trim levels he will be getting in. He will only know when the truck arrives on his lot! According to their website, Drew Auto in San Diego seem to have what you're looking for, although I realize you live on the east coast.

    Let me vent here people..

My first order from HDK was for the nerf bar step rails. What I received instead was a black plastic running board type of thing. The cheap [non-permissible content removed] U-Haul box they shipped them in had torn, all the nuts and bolts had come out of the bag inside the box and were scattered all over the place, and I was missing a bolt to boot. I was not at all pleased but installed them anyway and called HDK to complain. They were generous enough to give me a $40.00 credit towards my next purchase plus free window visors for my Santa Fe.

I sold those black step rails to a fine guy that posts here occasionally. The thing is it cost me a lot of money to have them boxed properly and shipped from Florida to California. So I called HDK to see if they would cut me a deal if I ordered the nerf bars (again) as well as the chrome brush guard to match. They did give me a good deal...but when the brush guard arrived it was damaged and there was no installation sheet included. It does not take a genuis to figure something like that out but it was annoying nonetheless. I called and bitched again. This time I was told to mail it back, and they would send me a new one. When I shipped the guard back I phoned HDK that day with the tracking number and asked them to go ahead and send my new one right away.

After waiting over a week and still no brush guard I phoned HDK and was told they had to order it from Korea and they would have it sent to me directly. I was told they would e mail me with the shipping date. I never got that e mail. Again, they offered me something free. I opted for window visors for my roomies 2001 Elantra.

When the guard finally arrived it was boxed in a damn cheap assed U-Haul box yet again with no padding and had a basic instruction sheet from HDK inside. Now how did that get in there if it was shipped directly to me from Korea?? The guard itself is fine but there are not enough nuts/bolts/washers to install it!!! Clearly it takes at least 12 nut/bolt/washer combinations to install this thing and there were only 7 bolts.

I guess by now you have gathered that I am extremely peeved at HDK. I do give them credit for trying to make things right when bad things happen. But geez oh Pete, does it have to happen on every order????

I for one will never again order squat from HDK. Besides, if I did it would probably arrive broken anyway.

I test drove the AWD vs 2WD Santa Fe with no intention of purchasing that day. It was the only AWD that I could find after calling several dealers throughout the state. (as I was calling dealers I had no interest in the AWD, I was more interested in model and color ( Pewter was the only one I was interested in). I found a dealer here locally who had one of each and figured what the hell, its worth the 30 minute trip to compare the two.
I must tell you that the drive on the AWD was much better that the 2WD as it felt heavier and had a better feel to the drive. When I originally test drove the 2WD a few weeks prior, I loved the drive back then too but when I drove em both back to back, I could really tell the difference. Did I take it up the [non-permissible content removed] on price? Well of course I did. Where I am , the crap the dealers are doing is borderline illegal but I dont mind as I love the vehicle. My few compaints are the brochure showed the upgraded radio in 3 different places and it came with the cheaper radio. There is no light in the glove compartment at night. There is no way to open the hatchback from the inside. A sunroof would be nice too.
Now a positive that I have not read on these boards and there are many positives about the vehicle. The foglights are a huge help at night (even when it is not foggy). I must be getting old because my eyesight at night time sucks. These lower lights make all the difference in the world when driving at night. If you havent tried em out, do so and you will see what I mean .
One other comment, when i picked up my car from the dealer, the dark Grey/black trim throughout the car was not detailed in anyway . Ithad a dull finish and it started to show some white scuffs and didnt seem "sealed" or polished if that makes any sense.
I put some armor all on it and it looks awesome. It took away those scuffs/scratches and it literally sparkles in the sunlight. It doesnt have that same dull look that it did before so if you have not done so, spot test it and compare. You will notice a HUGE difference.
Good Luck to everyone with their SF's.

For you people in Northern climes, I am in S. Florida where it has been 80 degrees hot at least 40 days of the last 60 days I have had my pewter GLS. The a/c works great. Very fast cooling and nice distribution in car. While the car in not perfect it is a lot better than the 98 Explorer I had. Much quieter, better ride, less rock and roll, better stability, and less dangerous. I would get scared driving Explorer over 65; GLS cruises at 80 and I am struggling to stay awake since it is so smooth. Radio fine and pulls in distant stations but speakers just mediocre. Nothing wrong yet. CIGARETTEE lighter awkward to use. Wipers I still haven't mastered but we are having a drought here and it has not rained much. I leave lights in on position all the time; I guess that is the poor man's DRL. Had leather in Explorer but like cloth in GLS I am 6'2' and find space fine except if I put steering wheel in a lower position I have trouble getting out of car. Miss the temperature gauge of Explorer but I am not willing to pay $300 to get one. I also would like a light in glove box. Paid MSRP at Rick Case in Plantation, FL. They apparently get alot of them - relatively speaking. As I said here before, the whole state of Florida got 38 for month of Feb. and Rick Case got 18 of them. You get the best price if you contact them on the internet. If anybody is interested in them, let me know and I will get you name of sales woman who handled me. One of the best salespeople I have ever seen and a straight shooter. I know that is hard to believe. BTW, very few people look at me here because there are so many Lexus and MB here they just figure it is one of them.

Just came from Dick Edwards Hyundia here in Manhattan, KS and they have two on the lot. A blue LX looks to be fully loaded and a maroon GLS with cloth seats. Both are 4WD with ABS and traction control. If anyone is interested let me know I can post the name and number of the sales lady for you to contact.

I know what you mean. My Sonata window visors arrived scratched (obviously a cheap generic Korean brand), so I sent them back and they said they'd send me "genuine Hyundai quality" ones. Well, the ones I got were very nice, obviously a higher quality, but they had strange arcs on them instead of being straight like normal ones, besides being labeled for the "EF Sonata", which is the current Korean version, not arriving in the U.S. until the 2002 model year. They agreed to give me full credit for both return shipping, which I'm applying towards the Hyundai remote starter. I'm almost afraid to call about the status, so I'll wait a week for them to arrive then give'm a call, since they're not good about returning emails. Their performance on this latest order will determine if I ever order from them again.

3,000 mile update on my AWD LX Sandstone (5 months, all city). No problems what so ever. No squeaks, rattles, vibrations, or anything we all dread. No trips to dealership except for a nice invitation with food and prizes (they gave away to everyone a mug and a nice cooler). I won $50.00 gift certificate also to Home Depot. It still gets a lot of questions and looks. I feel very smart right now and hope this good feeling continues. Its so much fun to drive. Next update at 10,000 miles. Congrats to all who own. Happy Motoring. AWD in Virginia

Does anyone have any experience with AWD in sand? I am looking to purchase a SF LX or GLS(going to test drive an LX and GLS tomorrow) I would be using the SUV in deep sand for access to the beach. Do you think you would need 4WD Lo or would the SF with AWD handle deep sand?

Yes! The crash test was exactly what I was expected. However, the bumpers was not right calculation. The bumper test should be the same as the Forester since the call estimated to the dealers was 3-4 times higher not double. If it was double the Santa Fe already fall into M=Marginal as proven by high crash test result. Just imagine the bumper test was the same as the Forester..Therefore, The Santa Fe is hard to beat. It was as what I have decribed before. No joking here. As it was mentioned and told by the main US-Hyundai in Fountain Valley! "We take priority safety when it cames to design the Santa Fe"! This is not a joke..The test have proved it.

Just gives me one more reason to love the Santa Fe. Hope our friends from other forums (you know who you are) who come over here for a laugh check out these results. Guess we're not crash test dummies after all!

Nice, comforting news regarding the SF in the 40MPH offset crash tests!

Not wanting to spoil the glow group members here may be feeling from the crash results results, but has anyone experienced any problems with the SF alarm going off on its own?
My SF alarm has gone off 5 times that I've heard in the past few weeks in different locations (but twice in the wee hours - 325AM and again the same night at 400AM), and more that I suspect, with no one trying to break in, no doors ajar or windows/hoods disturbed. All doors windows/hoods etc were tightly closed. The Hyundai dealer was unable to 'find or duplicate the problem' and indicated there is no diagnostic info with/in the alarm. In nearly all the cases the alarm has gone off, it has been somewhat windy (?).
This is about the most 'serious' (!) problem, other than the driver door lock freezing (which was fixed) I've had with my (CDN) SF GLS in the almost six happy months I've had it -:)

    Thanks for any replies.

A small tidbit from the 40mph offset crash test report of the 2001 Santa Fe I noticed, is that it is mentioned that a modified accelerator pedal (on all SF's built after March 02/2001) was retrofitted to the SF before its test. The new pedal apparently could helpmitigate driver right leg injuries in the offset crash.
I have queried Hyundai Auto Canada as to when or if this retrofit will be made available to us current SF owners who did the pioneering...

No flames please , I am a very happy SF owner....

Great news for us SF owners... most owner's and prospective buyer's concern when considering the santa fe was the safety rating it would get once tested. Other people in the other forums quickly declared that the SF would rate poor because it is based on Sonata platform, which has gotten poor ratings in the past plus the fact that is made by Hyundai. I guess this would prove them wrong and silence them.
HMSHoodfan was correct to note the modified accelarator pedal that was included in the tested SF was made starting March 2, 2001, it factored in the safety of the dummy's right leg, I bet it would benifit us too right??
It would be interesting to see if HMA would offer this upgrade to early owners of SF manufactured prior to march 2 '01.

    Drive safely everyone.

Last week Houston had a very bad hail, wind and rain storm. While being hit with marble size hail for 10 minutes, the alarm never came on. The wind has been blowing very hard here for a week and no alarm. Yesterday I didn't close the rear hatch tight and when I tried to reopen it the alarm went off! It took me a minute to know what that noise was. I have 5000 mi on my (fourth generation?) SF GLS and love it more each day. I did notice that since I have been using the ac that my gas milage has dropped about 1 gallon per mile. I agree with an earlier post about using the fog lights to see the road better, they really do work better than the high beams.
One last note: after being hit by the hail, there was not one dent or scuff mark on the car.

Have been advised by a Hyundai mechanic that when SF is put on a lift to make sure the Emergency Brake is not engaged. It will burn out the viscous coupling of the 4WD system. Has anyone heard of this problem?Mechanic specifically mentioned that at Hyundai Tech school, this problem was emphasized. Has anyone seen a technical memo on this problem?

It will burn the viscous coupling only if you run the engine and put it in gear while on the lift with the parking brake engaged.

You can lift the 4 wheels safely with the parking brake engaged if you do not run the engine.

It is not "a problem". Every AWD vehicle, Subaru, Audi and the others would do the same under those conditions.

I received in the mail today from my purchasing Dealership a Safety Notice. It reads as follows:
"Your Vehicle in involved in a Manufacturers Campaign # 913. It is very important that we get this recall performed, so please call today for a convenient appointment." Does anyone know what this is all about? I would appreciate hearing if anyone else has recieved such a notice. I have a 2wd LX with ABS and Traction Control. Thanks for your input.

For interested SF owners, I have posted a few pictures of my SF with the Hyundai (simulated) woodgrain dash kit for the SF installed....

This kit covers the centre dash (3 pieces) and the instrument fascia (1 piece) (approx cost $165 Cdn+tx).

I don't yet if/when Hyundai will come out with another kit(s) for other pieces such as the door controls or console area - here's hoping...
