you only have two choices when it comes to buying in the area. coleman near the 270 spur, and rosenthal in tyson's. i have owned two infiniti's and tried to buy at eaither dealer, plus klein's (alexandria) before they went belly-up. i felt like i needed a hot shower and alot of soap after leaving coleman. hard sell, treat you like an idiot rediculous trade value.
rosenthal has been pretty good on the sales side, but i wouldn't touch them for service, unless it's warrantee work. my local nissan shop does just fine, thank you. there is a pretty decent, if that's possible, older salesguy at rosenthal named paul chapman. he sold me my '98 qx4. he is pleasant and will treat you with some respect if you know what the real numbers are on a vehicle before you go in. there must be at least 20 qx4's on the lot right now.
just because edmunds isn't listing an incentive, doesn't mean there aren't any. for example... there's $10K on left-over q45's right now.
HI GUYS JUST NEEDED SOME HELP CAN NOT DECIDE BETWEEN A PF LE AND A QX4. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE THE PATH FINDER LE I SAW WAS PRETTY LOADED. I KNOW THE QX4 HAS BETTER WARRANTY AND SERVICE BUT BESIDES THAT , THEY USE THE SAME ENGINE! QX4 IS A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE.. I AM SHOPPING FOR A SUV, I THINK IT IS BETWEEN A ML,PF OR QX4...ANY GOOD DEALERSHIPS AROUND BOSTON AREA? PLEASE HELP!!
The strange thing is Infinity list 15MPG city driving for both, 4WD as wel as 2WD. Sounds wrong for me. Can anyone tell me a honest city driving MPG for a 2WD (2X4), on 2001 model? Thank you.
I have a 2001 QX4 and I get about 12mpg city. No where near the stated sticker mpg. One of the down sides to the QX4 has always been the mpg. I had a 98 QX4 which was just as bad. They were both 4x4.
The 4x2 model weighs less w/o all the auto 4wd equipment (almost 300 lbs less!). Also, the front wheels in the 4x4 are engaged at the transfer case, not the hubs, so there is always some additional parasitic drag even when there is no torque going to the front wheels. This will surely result in better economy for the 4x2, but I'm not sure how much.
I own a 2001 PF LE (Auto 4wd), and I recently owned a 2000 PF LE (part-time 4wd). Both gave me very similar mileage numbers, although the 240 hp in my 2001 makes it much easier to tolerate the fuel consumption!
The worst fuel economy I ever got was 13 mpg (dead of winter, 4wd engaged all the time, all in-city with a healthy dose of daily rush hour driving). The best is around 20 mpg (summer, highway, few hills, 2wd, 10,000 miles on engine). Average is around 16 mpg.
I found that my economy continued to climb as the mileage went past 10,000 - 12,000 miles. Cold weather and winter gasoline formulations can really reduce economy (as well as how you drive, of course). Also, using less than 91 octane fuel in the 2001 PF and QX4 reduces economy (as well as being bad for the engine in the long run). Hope this helps.
Thank you for advice. I went Sunday at Infiniti dealer, and I was seriously consider to buy an 2001 4X2 (2WD), but they can't give me the MPG city driving for an 4X2, only 4X4 (witch is 15MPG).
I am a South California resident, is no winter here, but and I'm enjoyng LA havy traffic daily. I will spend 95% of driving in traffic, and usualy it take me around 35-40 min. for 7.5 miles! I love this city! May be QX4 is not the right choice for me? I like it, the body, inside is great, feels roomy, excelent engine, perfect for me! ...But the MPG... Can anyone tell me honest MPG city drivind on 2001 4X2 (2WD) QX4?
I bought a new QX4 last month and had a strange thing happen over the weekend. My husband was driving, turned the car off, got out to fill up the car with gas, and when he was filling it up the doors all locked (I swear - I was in the passenger seat and didn't touch a thing). Then when I unlocked the doors from the passenger side to let him in, and he opened his door, the horn started blaring and the lights started flashing. Any ideas what caused that? It's been OK since then, but I don't want my ears to be traumatized like that again. I read the manual, and it was no help.
that 4X2's get up to 36mpg city driving loaded with 5 people and the a/c cranked to 65 degrees.
if that's what you want to hear....
however, the truth is that a 4X4 with an "on demand" feature isn't going to be that worse than a 4X2. if a couple of mpg's is going to make a difference in your decision, then a $35K sport-ute might not be the choice for you.
the poster above who claims 20mpg is way over on the far outisde of the range. my '98 has gotten just under 13mpg over it's entire life (25K miles). my highest mpg EVER was 17. that was on a no A/C, roofrack off, no hills, no speeding, road trip. if i get 15 for a tankful, i look at it like as a triumph. and yes, your SoCal reformulated/oxygenated fuel will get poorer mileage than what people in cleaner climates get.
honestly, if you want a qx4 or a pf get one. if the cost of feeding premium fuel into it is going to be too much to take then look at a cr-v, forester, or rav4. and, if you don't need an suv don't get one! you'll love your passenger car every time you fill up and figure the mileage at 20 or 25 mpg.
roxyco, Did he have the keys in his pocket? I've had times when bending over with the keys in my pocket that coins have pushed the lock button on the remote and locked up the doors. -Jon
Strange you should say your mileage improved after 10-15k miles. I recently noticed about 1mpg increase in my 01 PF at about 12k miles of use. Now getting 17mpg most of the time. I have the 01 with the Older part time 4wd system.
with my 2001 qx4, on strict interstate drives i've easily hit 20 mpg if not a touch better. my usual city driving and daily commutes bags me about 15-17 mpg depending on my mood.
as for the break-in mileage increase, i've definitely noticed that as well. i'm just over 12 000 miles and i'm starting to zero in on the high end of interstate driving (21 mpg) and city driving (17 mpg).
I believe the improving economy up to 12,000 miles has alot to do with the tight tolerances in the Nissan/Infiniti engines (and Japanese engines in general). Nissan techs cite this as the reason why they recommend waiting until around 10-12k miles before switching to synthetic oil. It allows the engine to wear in and loosen up completely. Interestingly, I've been told by the service manager at my Honda dealer that my 2001 Honda Odyssey will develop its rated HP and economy at around 12,000 miles for the reasons stated above.
I just purchased a 2001 QX4 with premium package, sunroof and deflectors for 33400.00. After TTL and subtract customer loyalty discount I was out the door for $33662.00 and then financed it @ 3.9%. I drove several SUV before making my decision including JGC(poor safety record-I currently own a '95 JGC), 4Runner(drives like a truck and fishtails too much), RX300/Highlander(Camry with cargo space).
Yes, I have done the key thing also...leaned against the car and locked everything because I hit the remote....your mileage deal is right on.....35mpg with 7 people in the car and a 35 foot trailer and 4 wheel "low" engaged at all times....just kidding. This is no economy car; I get between 15 and 17 in mixed driving. Read that as 16 most of the time. However, I didn't buy the car to get great mileage. I believe it is still the best SUV in it's pricerange and have no problems with a bit over 12K on my '01 QX4 4X4. Fit and finish are by far the best I've seen in any automobile. I love the horsepower as well...
I am in need of a vehicle to replace my 91 Explorer. I have an Infiniti I30, looked at the Pathfinder but V6 turned me off for towing. Does anyone do a significant amount of towing with their QX4? I drive 450 miles (225 there and back) on weekends to a cabin in the summer towing a boat a dozen times. I'm not worried about the engine as much as the transmission. The QX4 is rated to tow 5,000 lbs, same as Pathfinder.
Going to pick up my 98 Infinity loaded this week. Should I get the $700 (CAN.). package for the paint/leather/under carriage protection? Why or why not? A bit naive but learning fast as I have read all 570 messages. Paid $29,995 Can. (about 22,000 U.S.)includes gold pkg., rear wind deflector, remote starter, and after market air filter system that suppose to deliver 15 additional H.P. It is a local one and I have talked to the previous owner. Did I get a reasonable deal?
Hey guys, how many of you have snubbed your noses at Infiniti's service prices and gone to a Nissan dealership? I just called about getting my 15K service done at Infiniti and because it is a "major" service they want $395!!!! I called a Nissan dealership and they will service it for $175. For me right now, the $220 difference is a pretty high rate for a partial day rental )... Any experiences, good or bad?
look at your owner's manual. you will surprised at the simplicity of the 15K service. the oil filter is $6 and the air filter is somewhere around $25, if i recall correctly. there is no tranny service nor steering nor anything major. just a bunch of lubes.
even $175 sounds heavy to me. for $395, you better get a full detail job and a massage. screw the dealer for trying to rip off their customers. i'd love to see one of the jerks justify $395 for a filter and lube job. with maybe 1.0 or 1.5 hrs of service, plus the $30 for the rental car, what a total rip.
i have never used the dealer for the easy maintenance items. just warranty work and one of the oil changes every year.
Some dealers recommend more than the "minimum" required services as a preventative measure instead of simply trying to pad their profit margins. Check out Services--How often, and what to do? for some pros and cons. Steve Host Vans, SUVs and Aftermarket & Accessories Message Boards
I rechecked the factory shop manual for the 15K service recommendations. Change oil and filter. Lube driveshaft. Inspect brakes, tires, suspension, fluid levels, steering gear, boots, exhaust, bearing grease, vacuum hoses.
Now I also am in favor of extra maintenance, but if the above list is all the dealer is going to actually do, then one hour's labor will cover it all. What's that today? - about $75 max.
War story ahead... I recently saw a sheet at a local dealer advertising their "tune-up" special for $225. It listed about 20 items they would do, but each had the words "if required" after it. It was written for a '60s car with carburator, idle, points, and fuel mixture adjustments. None of that applies to a car built in the last fifteen years. All the other items were "inspect" this and that (including the windshield washer fluid!). And "additional parts needed" were extra of course. Turns out all you got was new spark plugs. And you wonder why it's a rare, rare instanace thay my vehicles see the inside of a dealer service bay.
Please would someone respond to the Canuck in message 571 as I am not an avid internet user. I want to ensure my message is being received and not in cyberspace limbo. Thanks Picked up the 98 QX4. What a black beauty.
spritzerd: any suggestions i've heard about the undercarriage/etc protection has been negative. some people swear by it, but i don't personally know anyone who's felt it to be beneficial. keep your vehicle washed and waxed and you can provide the same exterior protection with just a little care. the same goes for the inside. spend $30-$40 to buy Lexol or some other leather cleaner and conditioner (protectant also) and you've given the same protection to your interior.
I am considering the Pathfinder LE but recently saw an ad for the QX4 with a lease price of $399 with $2750 down for 42 months before taxes. I have not gotten the best price yet on the LE lease but I assume it should be less. The question is how much less should it be or how much more is it worth paying for the QX4. Any advice?
zeen: this question is probably one of the most common to see on this board. along with my suggestions, you should look thru previous postings on this board for more info.
i own the qx4 and i love it. at the time of my purchase, the pathfinder only had manual 4wd shifting, not the auto switch that's found on the newer models. that was the biggest seller of the qx4 for me, which now makes the difference a little less, since the pathfinder now has the same auto 4wd mechanism. besides that though, i felt like the qx4 was smoother and definitely more luxurious, but these are totally "feel" items. i suggest you take a ride in both, right after one another, and do it a couple times. even ask the dealer for a one nighter, i took each vehicle home for a nite to get an extended experience.
I have seen some posts somewhere that QX4 owners just take their car or suv to a Nissan dealer and they do the maintenance for much, much less. It is the same vehicle in many, many ways mechanically. They do not get a rental car but the last message I read the guy saved over 150.00 and he said that was pretty expensive rental for one day so if you have to have a rental get one for about 19.95 a day and save the rest.
I'm certain you'ld save some money servicing your Qx4 at a Nissan dealer for maintenance. When I owned an Acura, I always took it to the Honda dealer, and saved big bucks!
I'm considering buying a 2001 QX4 and I just noticed that the recommended fuel is premium unleaded. Anyone know if it is necessary to use this vs. a higher regular octane unleaded. Do you have to run premium unleaded?
How's the headroom in the 2001 QX4? I'm only 5'10", but I usually wear a hat. Will I be bumping the headliner with the sunroof option? Also, I hear the roof rack makes noise. Can this be adjusted to get rid of the wind noise?
I have negotiated to re-lease a loaded '98 QX4 with 45,000 miles. Since it is a "certified" pre-owned vehicle from Infiniti, they are adding an additional 1yr/12,000 mile warranty to the existing 4yr/60,000 miles which gives me about 27,000 miles of warranty left. It's in perfect condition and the terms are $0 down, $399 per month for 36 months (15K miles per year). Does this sound like a pretty good deal to you guys??
are you sure that you want to lease a vehicle that is four years old????
you are going to out of warranty when there is more than a year to go on the lease. used vehicle leases are more common (and make more sense) in cases where there are low miles and/or a short duration lease.
there are some pretty expensive things to break on a qx4. it would be a shame to have a tranny or 4wd system go, just when your lease is finishing.
you mention the lease payment. what is the acquisition cost and residual value? monthly payments don't really mean much, if the price is too high.
watch for termination/disposition fees and high addtn'l mile rate!
Ace, The cap cost was $22,700 with a residual value of $12,100. Mileage in excess of 15K per year is .12 cents per mile. Your point about being out of warranty for 18,000 miles is my biggest issue. Regardless, I think I'm going for it!
We have had the same discussion on the Pathy board. I am not sure what others are running but I am running premium.
qx4: Is the compression ratio in the older VQ motor the same? Just because the motors are of the same family, that doesn't mean that they have the same requirements. I don't know what the fuel requirements for the Max's VQ motor is but I think Nissan has caused some confusion for the QX4/Pathy because there were two engines within the same model year (VG33E and VQ35DE).
I would agree with Ace10 -- $399 is not that great a deal for a three year lease of a four year-old vehicle (i.e., in the last year and a half you're still going to be paying $399/mo to drive a six-year old car that's out of warranty). For about $100 more per month you can get a new QX4 with the 240HP engine (big difference over the '98's 167HP), Xenon lights, etc., and be in warranty the whole time.
i'm not saying that $22.7K for an average mileage '98 is a bad price... i think that is about where they should be, especially if it has the ht seats, ltd slip diff, sunroof and cd changer pkg.
i just can't see fixing a car that's not yours.
and the resid of $12.1 is probably too low. i wonder how that is determined... by the dealer or the lender. probably a good source of income for the dealer if he can set it artificially low.
how about this.... buy the car outright for $22.7 or something less and finance it for 5 yrs. easy to do on used luxury vehicles. payment would be in the $450 to $475 range for 60 months. at least you could get rid of it whenever you wanted and would probably not be upside down after maybe the first six to twelve months. then you may/could be building equity.
just to let you know... i have a leased '98 for 48 months/12K yr. got it in late summer of '98. lease payment is south of $350/month.
Your insight has been very helpful. Purchasing the '98 QX4 would make more sense than leasing a 3 yr old vehicle with limited warranty left. I think the price of $22.7K is pretty good, especially with the condition of this one, but Infiniti of Orlando decided to do the ol bait and switch. I have of course, decided to leave their deal on the table and continue my search. Thanks for the help!
I posted awhile back about buying in Canada. It turns out we're interested sooner than we thought, but just checking in to see if anyone has any other deals made below the 46000 mark? Thanks again.
from my knowledge all VQ engines require premium starting with the 95 maxima(they came out in july 94 in the 95 maxima model year)
i never had problems with the regular gas, but a relative of mine suffered noticable performace drop and engine didn't sound good at all. (i'm assuming knocking..) dealer told them to use premium as required by engine specs and its been running fine (it was a 98 maxima).
on the other hand, maybe i'm lucky but no problems with mine.
i do realize that the engine is designed for that minimum ocatane rating (92 or 90+). and idealy it should get what it wants.
Well as stated above, I walked away from the 15K "Inifinti" service at $395 and took it to a Nissan dealer for the same service for $180. I realize some of you still think that that is overpriced but I wanted to ensure that missing the "official" service would not bite me later. Anyway, two hours later, it was done and I am more than happy taking the $215 difference home with me. I got lucky and found the Nissan dealership just as nice as the Infiniti one and had the same experience minus the free loaner car.
I'm about to become a owner of a brand new 2001 QX4 4x4. My dealer had some problem locating one with all my specifications but it's at the dealer now and I'll be picking it up this week. In my excitement to get behind the driver's seat, I might forget to go through a proper inspection so I thought I would ask you all for any advice in things to check/ask when I'm picking up vehicle? Thanks in advance for any input.

as for the other cars in the house
95max GXE about 10L/100km
same for a 96accord(non vtec) but driven hard.
it all depends on driving style. from the figures i provided, it shows a 4cyl accord consumes as much as a 3LV6 max.

you lose performace
more fuel consumption
some say you can even blow a piston
