    I requested a quote on a Ioniq 5 SEL RWD lease from a local dealer.

    I wanted only to pay for first month and the DMV and taxes at signing, so around $1200. 36 months, 10k miles per year.

    Dealer came back and set minimum $3000 for Ioniq 5 leases, claiming that there are more taxes due on an EV lease than a regular car lease.

    In this case, he claims I would owe sales tax on $13,500 rebate. I am assuming this is including the $7500 lease cash given out for the tax credit to leasing companies.

    Is this true, the "rebate" is taxable and paid by the lessee?

    If it is payable, does it have to be paid at signing or drive off or would it be rolled across the payments?

    In any event, it's about $33 or $34 I believe divided across 36 payments.

    He hasn't given me a quote yet. On the Hyundai site, their calculator has it that you pay $3999 at signing and your monthly payment would be $199. That doesn't include taxes.

    But when I use $1200 for Due at Signing, it shows $286-287 for monthly payment.

    In any event, he's making it sound like you pay a lot more in taxes on an EV instead of a gas car because the "rebate" is taxable, not some incentive given by manufacturer to help attract lessees.

    On any vehicle, not just EVs, upfront rebates applied as CAP cost reductions are taxable, upfront.

    The $7500 "tax credit" portion is irrelevant, because to the lessee, it's all rebate.

    Typically, with good credit, you can roll those upfront taxes into the CAP cost (and the payment). If this dealer chooses not to offer to do that, that is their prerogative. I doubt Hyundai Finance has an issue with it.

    Sorry , could you explain the lease cash? I'm only seeing 7500 lease cash on hyundais website. I was also under the impression the ionic 5 does not yet qualify for federal tax credit. Thanks

    It's an incentive from the bank to the customer, and includes a pass through of the $7500.

    The only way these will lease well is with the big incentive.
