I forgot the CRV has the spare mounted on the rear, do any of you think that is a problem if you get hit in the rear, to me its as if the car would hit the tire before it hit the bumper and smash the whole real end in, costing a hell of a lot of damage.
I wouldn't really want the CR-V to get much bigger, because I think part of the attraction of the CR-V has been its compact status. I wouldn't mind if a larger, more powerful engine were dropped into a car of similar dimensions, though. I think that would let us get more grinnage per mile. Origenx: I have the Honda alarm too, and it works well. If it had a little louder siren and a shock sensor (that never gave false alarms), it would be perfect. gunga64: You're correct on your concern about the tire on the tailgate. I think many low-to-the-ground cars would slide right under the rear bumper though. If you think about it, there are pluses and minuses to wherever you store it.
It is shown there for $189.60. How much did the dealer charge you all for it? Would it be possible to buy it online aftermarket and have someone else instl it or instl it yourself? Would that void any warranties?
Does anyone else have any other aftermarket alarms and how do you like/dislike them? Include prices too please!
I got quoted an Autobytel price of $19703 for a 2001 CR-V EX 5M, which is $300 over the $18962 invoice + $440 destination fee. How does that sound to everyone? Should I try to get invoice or not?
i just went comaro shopping. we looked at the CR-V on friday, and rav4 on monday. what a price difference though. honda SE with leather and auto came out cheaper than rav4 with quick order package and 5 spd. the toyota dealer was ridiculous, he basically told us even if we paid what they asked for the car, we would have to wait 8 weeks to take delivery. but then he mentioned that there is a special program on 4runners, he showed us a beautiful 4 runner with leather, sunroof, loaded to the brim ($35 000 sticker) for $26 000. they must be having really difficult time selling this 16 mpg vehicle. i just want to know what other people paid for their CR-V's whether lx, ex, or se. also, honda dealer said it is very difficult to get a 5spd CR-V, any input on that? i have a civic ex now, and had to wait 3 weeks to get one in 5 spd back when i bought mine, i would really like a CR-V with a 5 spd tranny. is the shifter on the floor or on the column, like in auto? thank you
My point about the pressure was that 26 seems really, really low. Even at 29 my tires look deflated. Why is the recommended tire pressure for the CR-V so low?
If your CR-V gets bumped by someone in the back, particuylarly a larger SUV, you will incur big damage to the liftgate. It is apparently an expensive repair.
I too have been looking to buy. I have been searching for an LX 4WD Automatic. I was wondering if anybody has purchased a CRV recently and has been able to pay invoice or below. Is 300 above invoice still a good price? Any comments are greatly appreciated.
I usually split the difference between the car and tire recommended pressures. In this case, let's say the car recommends 26, and the tire says 34, I'd go with probably 29 (weighing it a little towards the car manufacturer, who probably knows a lot better than we do or the tire maker, who has to make these for many kinds of vehicles).
As far as spare location, I don't know what all the fuss is suddenly with people not liking the spare in back. SUV's have had this for a long time, and at one time, older jeeps had them on the side. I'd rather see them start putting on real steel bumpers first. If not steel, how about 4X8 wooden ones. Wood can be shaped and painted or stained to look very nice and is a lot stronger than cheapo plastic!
You will find the CRV cheaper than the RAV-4 once you add up the options versus standard features.
If you are serious about the CRV, I would definitely hold out for the 5 speed. With the 4 cylinder engine, you need a manual to get the most performance, plus it is much more fun.
When I bought a year ago, there were several on the lot. With incentives now in place (I saw a 3.9% finance ad on TV the other day) there is inventory out there. You certainly can get a 5 speed without a long wait. Go to another dealer who will take your wishes seriously. Good luck.
Gunga - That info was posted a few weeks ago and was repeated by another source. However, none of the US Media sources have published it since. Kinda makes me wonder. Given the popularity of the CR-V here in the states, I would think that it would be hot news. Since it hasn't been repeated, I don't trust the source. JM2C
Dudka - It is slightly harder to get a 5 speed than an automatic. Basically, it means a little more work for the salesman, thus, they will try to steer you away from it.
You can't get an SE with the 5 speed. Dunno if you were aware of that. The 5 speed shifter is on the floor and well within reach. It's a great set up and doesn't feel at all like the long throws that you often get with trucks.
Zircon - If someone hits you in the rear bumper, then they have the privilege of paying to repair the damages.
origenx: I ordered the alarm online and installed it myself on a Saturday morning. If you order genuine Honda parts and put 'em in yourself, you will enjoy the genuine Honda warranty -- on the parts themselves, not labor, of course. If you are not sure of whether or not you're getting genuine Honda stuff from an online vendor, ASK! But here are my three favorite sites to order stuff from, and all three are online alter-egos of actual brick-and-mortar Honda dealerships:
Certainly looks like it. Only $189 for the whole thing, including siren and hood kit? I can't remember how much I paid, but it was certainly a heck of alot more than that. I negotiated it into the price of the car. But if I remember correctly, the MSRP for the whole system including installation was approx. $800 CDN.
I got mine for 17,495 plus tag and tax. They gave me a pretty good trade in on my old Del Sol, so I was happy. So far, I looooveee it!!! Oh, I got the 5,9% APR for 60 months Mihai
"MSRP for the whole system including installation was approx. $800 CDN" That would be about $521.56 US.
The total parts price for that (including hood switch, siren kit & attachments) would be approx: $189.60 security system $25.20 hood switch $39.60 siren kit $22.80 hood switch/siren attachments ---------- $277.20 US or 425.18 CDN Which means u paid 374.82 CDN or $244.36 US extra. Or something like that...
I think I will just opt for the basic security system and nix the extra $87.60+ US for the hood and siren kits...
Has anyone had to replace the rear bumper on their CRV yet? We got into a fender bender and no one wanted to punch it out for us. We found out that a new bumper would cost 300 to replace. My husband took a baseball bat and punch out the bumper, looks as good as new, a little tiny dent left but nothing compared to what it was. Any collision place will tell you that it won't look good punched out and you won't be happy with it. Don't believe them, its not that bad!
On the 2001 CR-V do both the driver and passenger seats have armrests?
Besides, antilock brakes and alloy rims what is the big difference between the LX and EX trim levels?
I've read a couple of reviews mentioning one of the major downsides is acceleration at highway speeds? I'm not really a speed demon but at least moderate passing power would be nice. Is it as bad as they say?
I'm just starting to shop for a new car. I considering the CR-V, Ford Focus Wagon ZTW, and the Hyundai Elantra GT 5 door. Right now, I like the CR-V the best but it is the most expensive.
The passenger-side armrest is an accessory add-on on every CR-V sold to date. In addition to ABS and the alloy wheels, the EX trim level is your ticket to 1) body-colored outer door handles and side mirror housings 2) chrome-colored inner door handles (I think the LX has grey ones.) 3) CD player instead of cassette (If you are an audiophile, this may not matter much since you could likely be going aftermarket for a better headunit.) 4) Rear seats that recline all the way back (ask dealer to demo the "bed" feature ) 5) Floor mats as a standard feature (I wish it was standard in 2000!) If I have missed anything, I think someone will correct me. Keep in mind that peak torque (133 ft-lbs) is at 4500 rpm, and that peak hp of 146 is at a racy 6200 rpm. The engine, a close relative of the one used in the Integra, is powering a car weighing 3200 lbs. Let this information shape your expectations as you test drive the vehicle. In my opinion, the CR-V is adequate in the power department, but each person can come out of the driver's seat feeling differently.
I think you should consider the siren and hood kits. Without the siren, you have to turn off the "beeps" for arming and disarming because the horn is LOUD. If you happen to beep it in an enclosed area (ie. parking garage) just as an old person is walking by, you may literally give him a heart attack! Also without the hood pin, a knowledgeable thieve could just pop your hood, disconnect the battery, and away he goes. I mean, for less than $100 extra, I would.
I don't own a CRV - yet. But I'm watching the board for info about the next generation CRV. One of the problems I have with all of the SUVs is that the rear bumper seems inadequate to protect the vehicle. What is the experience with the CRV? Are there aftermarket solutions that would improve the impact protection? Anyone actually try and install a 4X4 on the rear? (Just makes you want to spit, don't it?)
As to the tire, is there a place to store it inside? Some have noted that other CRVs for other markets have the tire inside. Where exactly does it go? Can the rear tire bracket be removed (easily - not with a torch)?
Maybe Honda will beef up the bumper as part of its redesign (or sell 4X4s as options!).
Elight - No, the rear tire bracket cannot be removed easily. In the Japanese domestic market, there is at least one trim level that has the tire mounted inside the car under the picnic table (in the ice chest along with the fresh fish). I'm not sure if they have to use a donut rather than a full size spare to make it work.
The CRV doesn't need to pass the tougher bumper standards that cars do, because it's a "multipurpose vehicle" as categorized by the government. The only small SUV that does pass the car bumper standards is the Subaru Forester, because the government classifies it as a car.
Thanks Rsholland. It'd be nice for a company with the high sods of Honda to "exceed" the requirements, even if they made it an option (more $).
Varmint, I appreciate your reply and all the information you impart. Given all the cool things about the CR, the bumper/spare is a stinker because it's the first comment my wife makes about the vehicle. My neighbors have a new one parked out front to play with my head.
Home Depot is close the local dealer, so if I go for the 2002 and decide to add the 4x4, I can just pick them up on the way home. I will of course send you a photo.
Hmm, so w/o the siren, every sound is from the horn? Even arming/disarming beeps? Yipes, that could get real annoying real quick...
So, the hood switch just sets off the alarm if the hood is opened? Hmm, I didn't have that on my last car. Not sure if I REALLY need that. So, there is no engine disabler or anything included in the base security system?
1996 Jetta has the same thing. Horn does all the noises. Why is that any more annoying than any other sound? The sound it makes doesn't even sound like a horn. More like a cartoon character blowing their nose type of sound.
Yes, with no siren, all sounds will be going through the horn. (Where else would noise be coming from?) There is an option to turn off arm/disarm sounds altogether, which is easily toggled from the remote. I have chosen to do this, since I find them unnecessary. (The alarm will flash the parking lights to acknowledge arm/disarm.) The security system does include a starter disabler without the hood switch. But I like having it 'cause I know my alarm will go off even if a thief attempts to try to disconnect the battery first.
Mine is an aftermarket alarm system, but it also has a silent mode. When the alarm is enabled/disabled it chirps and flashes the lights. When I hold down certain buttons on the key fob, it only flashes the lights (no chirp). This is pretty handy for when I get home late at night and do not want to annoy my sleepy neighbors.
Seeking info on 2001 SE pricing. How much is the 6-CD in dash radio instead of the standard 1 disc? Do they credit the standard setup? Any deals on the roof rack? And what's the actual price (Invoice vs. MSRP) for the passenger arm rest?
I see the Australian model has a sunroof. Any idea if the 2002 will offer that? Any way of getting it put in a 2001?
Would love a 2002, but seeing how Honda (and Toyota) love to milk customers the first few years of a new model release, I would expect the actual price one pays will be above MSRP. As it is, from what I have seen the new 2002 will START at around 22K while I can get a current one fully loaded for that price.
I second what slugline said. Just want to add that personally I do find the "beeps" useful. On a bright sunny day, it's pretty hard to see the parking light flash.
I have a question about Honda alarm. Is there a separate remote control for this alarm or can it be used with door opening remote? It will be pretty inconvenient to carry two separate remotes!!
Sdolven - The sunroof that is available in other markets is nice and large, but it is positioned between the front and rear seats. Basically, it's more for the rear passengers than the front.
It's not the location of the tire its the location of the bumper. any idiot can see that if the CRV was rear ended it would hit the tire before the bumper and smash out the rear door. What good is a bumper that is so much further recessed then the tire. I'm really suprised Honda would design a car like that. I figure after accidents these car compaines make a fortune.
Gunga - You are correct. Most manufacturers cut costs when it comes to bumpers. All we can do is not buy their cars.
Actually, most other vehicles would connect under the CR-V's spare and hit the bumper before the tire. The resulting *crush* effect would probably still damage the tire mounting, though.
I just bought my new CR-V, very good price, and I love it! One thing I'm not sure is if the passanger side wiper position, it's not flat but its up about 10 degree. That's mean the left wiper is resting flat but the right wiper is resting with some angel up. Do any CR-V have this problem? also I found the factory radio have a VERY poor receiption... is it due to the antenna or the problem of the radio?
so glad to see that you love your cr-v! i have a 2001 se and my passanger wiper is the same way , up from the hood maybe 2 or 3 inches up the windshield.as for the radio reception ... make sure that your antenna is pulled out all the way it makes a big difference if it is in the mast a few inches. good luck, Bogey
Traded my 99 Chevy Tahoe, even up for a new 01 CRV all wheel drive. How well do they preform in the snow? I read in the owners manual that if you get to much wheel slippage that the all wheel drive function over heats and stops working, till it cools off. Thanks Tom F.
Tom - It is possible to overheat RT4WD, but the only time I've heard of it actually happening was when Car and Driver was testing a CR-V a few years ago. I've never read of another incident (could be out there, but I haven't seen 'em).
For more on the CR-V's snow capabilities, read through this meet (page 2 in particular).
i just traded my 99 civic ex for the 2001 cr-v se. the first impressions are -- it drives like a civic, the interior is like the civic (except leather of course), and i like how i can see over other cars now, while still being able to drive it like a honda should be driven. wish the 5 spd was available in the se though. i test drove the 5 spd ex, and it was too noisy, too rough, and we didn't like the washed out gray interior. got the se instead. so far we love it, haven't had a chance to see the 4wd to kick in. looking forward to some bad weather so i can test the 4wd.
What do all the SE owners think about the quality of the leather in their CR-V's? Is is worth the upgrade price? I would prefer that leather was an option on the SE. I want the privacy glass but not sure about the leater (cold in winter, hot & sticky in the summer)
Well, I took the plunge and bought a 2001 EX 5M this weekend. So, far, I love it. It's a gorgeous blue that looks purple under nightlighting. Now, can someone suggest a good car soap & wax to use? What about regular dishwashing detergent? I had tried Nufinish (polyurethane) on my old car, but it started peeling off my hood like a glazed donut after around a year or so. I don't know if it was due to the Nufinish itself, or perhaps my hood had been repainted before at some point and that had caused some reaction. But, the rest of the car was fine - so I suspect that the Nufinish might just be heat-sensitive. Never had that problem with wax, but waxes only seem to last about 3 months.
Anyways, if that's so, then I wouldn't want to use the Nufinish on my new CR-V. Can anyone suggest a good wax or some other once-a-year finish that's safe to use & good?
i noticed the wiper not laying flat too. i asked the dealer about it, they said it was normal. i am wondering if i unscrewed the wiper arm and moved it so it lays flat, would it rub up against the other wiper?
