We were talking about profit margin which is calculated relative to costs (invoice). For gross profit margin, you are correct: the base is (often) the retail price.
Rest assured, Canadians and Americans do accounting exactly the same way! :-)

I'm sure that Honda could get another 20-30 HP out of the 2.4, but can they do it without sacrificing emissions, fuel efficiency, and NVH? Maybe, but then what will then do in three years when it's time for a mid-model upgrade? Design a whole new engine? I doubt it. Remember this block was designed as a 2.0 and has already been tweaked. Those 2.0 engines with 200+ HP also have 8000+ rpm red lines. If we go with the sort of technology, we're back to having no low end torque.
Candatwo - If you are looking to get "bang for your buck" then you should avoid SUVs all together. The price comparisons between sedans and SUVs are consistent with every manufacturer.

Assuming that the '99 models were introduced fall '98, the American consumer saw the horsepower bump happen in less than two years. You are now free to settle the rest of your bar bets, too. <GRIN>
I just made my way over to CRVIX (CR-V Information Xchange) for the first time. It's a really great site for people interested in the CR-V, not to mention owners.
There is the most comprehensive review I've seen on the 2002 CR-V on the site. Fine-tooth comb type stuff. Really nutrient dense and a must-read for all those intersted in the vehicle.
Although I've seen CRVIX referenced here, I don't recall a recent link. So here 'tis:
http://www.hondasuv.com/
Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the 2002 CR-V First Impression Review.
I'll try to link it here:

Really great stuff!

I pointed out the JDM model year because the post I was referencing mentioned mid-model changes. Since we have the CR-V from the get-go this time, those changes will seem like they take longer.
Jim - Bing (author of said review) is a CR-V owner and the head honcho at the CR-V IX. As the primary moderator at the CR-V IX Forum, he's read most everyone's opinions over the past several years and was well prepared for that review. Unlike reviewers that work for magazines, Bing didn't have a limit on how much space he could use or what topics he could write about. If he were writing for C&D, he couldn't waste pages on stuff like the rear wiper nozzle or possible aftermarket equipment.
Don't get the grill trim either, very ugly. Dealer reinstalled the bumper poorly, mismatched to the body.
We went to several dealers: 1 dealer had the nerve to say the price was MSRP + "AMV" (adjusted market value) of $2,000. We offered them $500 over invoice, but they wouldn't budge below sticker, so we walked.
Another dealer was about $100 under sticker.
Finally, we found a dealer that went $1,100 under sticker and we took the deal.
The car looks great & is a huge improvement over the 2001. Looking forward to bringing it home.
What other deals are people finding out there?
I think you got a very good deal as most people here paid MSRP. Two paid $316 over invoice at an Oklahoma dealer but that's an exception.
Houston dealers have dozens of LX, but very few EX anywhere.
Where did you get your deal at? I spoke to 10 deals in my area (northern NJ/NY area) and none would budge below a few hundred off MSRP.
Beside OK, where else have people gotten deals? I have some frequent flier miles I wouldn't mind using if it was reasonable driving distance from NY/NJ area.
Thanks.
folks I didnt think I could work the price on these hot potatoes but I think I got a good deal...please all you sharp shooters tell me if this indeed was a good deal or not considering the fact that Honda Dealers are just not willing to discount this SUV a penny in most instances because of its hi demand
I leased it for 39 months thru Honda Bank of America, $320 tax included, NO Money down execpt for the first month's payment of $320 which leaves me with 38 more payments, no motor vehicle fees or plate fees either, no bank fees, nothing but the first month's payment down. Also 15,000 miles yr.
I love this car and think it looks a helluva lot nicer than the 2001. To sum it up for all those that may want to know how it drives. It drives just like a larger CIVIC.
Only small gripes:
rear middle seat headrest seems to block a bit of the rear window view....can this be removed or lowered?
the 15 inch wheels and tires just look real skimpy on this size of an SUV

Darkfudge - Yes, the center headrest can be removed.
I was pretty set to buy the EX at $300 under MSRP, but then when I hear about others getting good deals, I think I should keep searching, but I've contacted 10 dealers in my area so far. Not sure where to look next.
1. It's a Honda
2. Beefier than the last one
3. More power
4. Seems more comfortable
Dislikes:
1. Rear mounted spare. Don't back into anything! Where is the rear bumper on this thing?
2. Wheel well openings up front. Gonna be a huge aftermarket in selling some covers for them!
3. Small tires. not as bad as some people say, but still noticeable.
4. A bit akward looking overall. Gonna take some getting used to. What's up with those huge roof rails?
5. Complete lack of foot/leg space for the front passenger. Ridiculous actually. Would not buy it for this reason alone.
6. Side step bars look silly
7. RT AWD system. Not as stable as a Subaru on snow covered roads.
8. Could not drive it. Seat belt issue. Sales guys tried BSing me at first but I let them know about the how it is all over the internet and they quickly shut up. They also said MSRP is not available yet. Again, I told them to look it up on the internet! Unbeleivable.
It will sell well just because it is a Honda.
I have owned several Hondas. Love them.
I can not love the new CRV though.
I have two hopes/dreams left in a small SUV:
1. Nissan X-trail coming over here
2. 2003 Forester (please be better looking)
I hope the list price and over list price customers and dealers are still reading these posting. By my calculations you paid $21,317.00 plus state tax. Michaelg how close did I come to your price. I waiting for a dealer to sell it @ $250.00 over invoice. Your price took less than a month after introduction. I'm willing to wait till its gets down to my price.
Good Luck with your new CRV , I hope to be driving one soon too.
I'm really happy with my new CRV It handles well, has tons more room than the 98 Civic I traded in had. At my first fill up (I was at 1/2 tank) I came up with 24.6 MPG. Based on my other Hondas this figure should get better as the engine gets broken in.
Honda of Kirkland is much better.
Does anyone here know what the CRV pricing is like here in the lower Hudson valley? I checked with a few dealers and one hasn't returned my price quote yet and the other doesn't have any left so wouldn't quote a price. Wouldn't surprise me if they did adjust above MSRP under such circumstances but I'm hoping that isn't the case. Any dealer recommendations would also be appreciated.
At one dealership there were 2 leftover 2001 EX CRVs which have the equipment I want. If I was to get one of those what kind of price should I ask for? It seems everyone is skipping over these 2 and going straight for the 2002 so I imagine they'd give me a good deal. Any ideas?
Many, many thanks!
Jason
wheels & tires just barely big enough but 16's sure would improve the look alot. tan interior didn't look as bad as I thought it would (through the glass) but will reserve judgement 'til I get inside one. seems to have decent space but will have to check out the front footwells. forgot to look at the front wheel wells. Overall, fairly impressed but like you, would jump at an X-Trail or maybe the new Forester(depends on how it looks too). (Dealer left the rear cargo light on, so they may be looking at a dead battery come Mon. morn. !)
Until someone gives me a good reason for dirtaphobia, I'd have to say that it's not a significant issue. After all, there's about ten square feet of open space under the engine bay. I doubt very much that another couple feet in the wheels wells be a problem.
Especially when the wheels are turning
For the $2.56 in materials Honda saved it sure was a foolish move.
Even the sales guys can't explain it!
Honda is beginning to resemble Saab in its design process, '90% genius and 10% what-the-hell-were-they-thinking?'. This ranks up there with the anemic air conditioning and inadequate vaccuum pot on the cruise control of the last model. My next car is either going to be this or a Subaru Outback Sport and this is a serious concern for me. I hope Honda or a reputable aftermarket company makes a fix for this.
Thanks!
Jason
The local dealer added a "paint protection" for $799 and another protection package (cargo tray, wheel lock and half nose mask) for $399 (at least a 2.35x mark up comparing prices in HandA-accessories.com). All CR-Vs from that dealer have this "paint protection", you HAVE TO pay for that if you buy from them. That is just total rip off. Anybody knows any other dealer is adding similar or other mandatory add-ons? My recommendation is don't even give them your business if they insist on stuffs like this. The salesman later on slipped words like they will have "paint protection" on all new CR-V for at least a few months. I feel sorry for the salesman, I don't think it is his idea but rather the idea of the dealership.
Likes:
-Smooth everything--shifting, acceleration, seats, controls, etc.
-Sound of doors closing
-I'm pretty much used to the new look. It's not like the first impression/thoughts anymore
-The mileage I got: 25 in mix driving (that's a bonus!) Never got it with old V.
-New car smell
-Lots of cubbies
-Pick up on the highway...it's effortless compared to old V
-The sound on the stereo is 100% improved
-Shifter and parking brake are innovative, pretty cool on second thought.
-Very quiet ride
-Extra space
-Tinted back windows
-Looks expensive
Dislikes:
-No variable speed wipers
-The rear wipers cleans a smaller area...and wipes more toward the passenger side of the vehicle. I feel it should be just the opposite
-Had to take out the middle backseat headreast to improve visibility
-A few rattles near moon roof
-HVAC controls not allowing the A/C be turned off when directing the flow of air in all directions. Same with recirculating/fresh air settings.
-No indicator light for 4-wheel drive. Would like to know when's working.
Overall, I am happy with my decissions. I don't have second thoughs. No car that will satisfy you 100% b/c cars are not custom-made (at least most people). The manufacturer hopes to appeal to a lot of people.
The dealer said the official date is Dec. 1st, but they'd probably be able to deliver a few days earlier...
The rattle occurs when I drive over rough pavement at low speeds. I think it's near the moonroof, or close to those handles on the roof. If you turn up the radio, you can't hear them. I'm rather annoyed by these sounds, my wife says she doesn't even notice...might be a man thing. I had a few rattles when I bought the '98 V as well and they seem to go away with time for some reason.
Good Luck
Engine is very smooth at idle for such a large I4.
A/C cools quick
The 4 inch drop in cargo floor creates a cavernous amount of storage room even with the seats in place.
The dealer I went to had 2 mountain bikes with all the wheels and seats on tied down in the back. That is very cool!
For this type of vehicle and price it should come with cross bars on the roof rack.
Tan interior takes some getting used to but really isn't that bad. Black is nice esp in the EX trim
Radio sounds good. Could use the optional subwoofer that was sold on the old CR-V through Hparts.com
Carpeting seems a little flimsy.
Easily seats three average people in the back
Dash mounted shifter is not akward at all niether is the hand brake
Seems well put together. I was worried when I read that all CR-V were coming from England
I didn't have a chance to test drive. But I'll post it when i get a chance.
Does anyone know if the Japanese 02 CR-Vs have VINs starting with "J" ?
Road Noise: Subdued to quiet over a variety of surfaces. Transmission: Honda engineers did a fantastic job of mating the 4 speed auto to the 2.4 liter engine. Part throttle kickdowns are extremely smooth and useful. The transmission seems to think for you, and keeps the CRV moving along at a sporty clip. In addition the engine is only turning about 2600 rpm at 70mph which makes for quiet cruising and substantial available power for accelleration beyond that speed.
Front Seats; Very comfortable, firm and lumbar supportive. Rear Seats: Huge, and spacious. Radio/CD Changer: Good sound, better with CD. (installing Sub soon) Rear Trunk: Cavernous (optional rear cargo cover very intelligently designed, and there's even a place to store it!) Red Chianti with Saddle Interior. I LIKE the saddle interior with its' various shades of light & dark brown. Black interior is too boring for me. Exterior color is pretty sharp- a kind of mettallicy cranberry color. Overall: Even more impressed than ever with new CRV!
Do you know what is the price for CRV 2002 LX 2WD?
Thanks
HVT
I'm still very happy with my decision to trade in the Civic. The pick-up the V has is great. I really have to watch myself I have caught myself going a bit faster that I should in a brand new car! The shifter on the dash is a lot nicer than I originally thought it would be. But I find I'm reaching for the shifter where the console would be.
