Who is this Billy person and why did they refer to their Jeep as a CAR? Tom, I thought you were taking care of things in here? Do I have to start a recall on your position as mayor? I still can't get into Gills.
tampabay - Here is a place with some good Jeep covers. It is a cab cover that is waterproof and covers your full door. http://jeepcovers.com/ I would think the softop will be fine for you. I think it was in '01 when Jeep came out with the new sailcloth top. It has reduced the nosie a lot. The only reason I would go for a hardtop is for security. I don't ever leave anything of value in my Jeep, unless it is locked up and I wouldn't trust the stock console and glove box. If my doors are on, I don't lock them. Too high of a chance of getting your windows slashed.
embeeduece - I like the vinyl seats better because of rain and easier to clean when they get dirty. You can get waterproof seatcovers for the cloth seats though.
I always put my manual tranny in 1st. I think the only thing that matters is that it is in a low gear.(1st or reverse). I only put the ebrake on if it is a steep hill. On the trail I never leave my Jeep with it running and only the ebrake. I always kill it, put it in 1st, and put the ebrake on, even if I am just getting out for a second. I have seen and heard about too many peoples vehicles running off on them. I remember reading about a guy taking his girfriend out for the first time off-road. When he pull up to go down a steep hill she said no way am I going down that. She jumped out and he puts it in park and goes over to her and tries to explain how it is no big deal. The 4 runner jumped out of park and rolled down the hill. He thought it would be ok as it started to slow down at the bottom but then it went off to the right and rolled into a creek bed.
I took possession of my '04 Sport 5 weeks ago (yesterday, at exactly 5:32PM). And while I don't know the feelings an expectant father has, I imagine that on some levels this is better. You have to wait a really long time to see the child's full potential, whereas I was in 4 wheel drive on my beach just a day & a half later!
I'm sure someday I'll think differently but at age 26, driving this Jeep (on & off road) is among the most enjoyable things I do, outranked only by fishing & scuba diving. I'm still fairly tentative with it, as an inexperienced 4 wheeler, so I'd wager I've only scratched the surface (at best).
If Jeep does another 4 wheel weekend at the Poconos next summer, I believe I'll be all over it. My understanding is that they have instruction as well as trails. Camping out & driving through mud... sounds like a blast. This is by far the most fun I've ever had on 4 wheels and I had a pretty kick [non-permissible content removed] '95 Trans Am in high school/college.
I put a bid on 5 Rubi wheels with 1,200 miles on them. I can't post the link from work (eBay is blocked) but if you search for jeep rubicon wheels, you will see them. I think the current bid is 1075.00. It appears they have the factory tires (30 or 31's?). There were some others with 32's, but I knew those wouldn't work and I'm doing a lift on the frog (I named her Jeep Kermit - since it's green and you hop when you get in ).
Is my bid price too high for 5 essentially new wheels?
I'm sure the Moabs are just as expensive as the Canyons, or maybe even MORE expensive. Guess what the price was on the Canyons when I called to check on them at a dealership??? Well, I don't remember the EXACT price, but they were around $400 apiece! (I'm thinking maybe they were even OVER $400 apiece, like maybe $450). I was so shocked that I called another dealership to verify that price, and the price the second dealer gave me was identical.
So, there ya go. That was just for the WHEELS, if these have the original tires on them, they are Goodyear MT/R's, and they are very good tires and very expensive tires. They would be 31" tires, but not sure about the width (think 10.50). I think those tires would be something like $150 apiece new.
So, the value of the wheels and tires together is way up there.
Hmmm, interesting concept. I wonder how well a hitch would handle some mild off-road terrain though. I'd hate to be passed by the trailer on a descent. ;-)
I've been thinking of something like this, and this sounds like it would fit my needs. I wouldn't plan on taking it too far into the woods, but it sure would be nice not to have to worry about ground clearance in a couple of spots.
If only I could win the lottery so I could get something like this (along with fencing my back yard, redoing the kitchen, and getting something instead of that hated Tacoma). At least I finally got the new roof!
I lost out on my bidding for the Moab wheels from the Rubi.
Oh well, there's other auctions and lots of wheels to choose from. It is reassuring to know that I can put 30 or 31's on my TJ w/o having to worry too much. We need to replace the flares anyway. heheh
I noticed we were coming up on post #10,000. I hope we get several posts this evening so Tom doesn't have to stay in from wheelin' tomorrow so he can get 10,000.
We had an absolutely GORGEOUS day here today. The temperature was only in the high 70's or low 80's with low humidity and the sun was shining. Tomorrow is supposed to be a repeat of today, and I am NOT hooked up with anyone for wheelin'!!!
Man, I am going to go down to Turkey Bay anyway, and I'll just hang out and hope someone shows up that will let me tag along.
OK, Mac, jump in here, Brother, and take #10,000.
Thanks for all the good info you have provided in here for so long.
Mac u deserve it dude.. The TECH MAN. Wow, ive been aways for awhile u guys posting like CRAZY.. Great to see all the new JEEPERS out there. Football is in the air here in BAMA. LOVE this time of year.. Keep posting all
Pure serendipity. I'd been tied up doing other stuff for several hours and just happened to log on in time to post. Funny how stuff like that works out sometimes!
That's a bummer that you still can't get into Gill's chat room! Do what I did... dump AOL and get earthlink, or anybody but AOL.
When I had AOL, I had trouble getting in the chat room too.
My puter gave up the ghost, and when I got the new one, I did NOT load AOL software on it. I got some free earthlink with the puter, and I liked it, so I stayed with it.
Coming originally from the Soobie Crew, I have to say that the Jeep gang is every bit as welcoming and informative (to name just two adjectives).
I have a question that has been in the back of my mind for a bit. Tom mentioned that he had some rubbing w/31" tires mounted on the Canyon wheels and no lift done. I see that the Ruby has 31"tires, albeit 16" diameter, 5.5" backspacing, and there is no rubbing and no lift done (other than the difference between 15" & 16" tire/wheel diameters). Is is just the difference in diameters that allow no rubbing on the Ruby? I want to replace my 30" tires w/31"s when it comes time to get new tires but don't want to invest in a lift at that time, hence my question.
Both vehicles are essentially the same with regard to suspension/chassis/tire clearance. The rubbing that can occur when fitting 31x10.50 tires to a non-Rubicon Wrangler can be dialed out by adjusting the steering stops. These are set at the factory for the standard tire width, then the adjusting nut is welded. Adjustment is usually subsequently done by fitting spacing washers behind the welded nut. Note that it is not the diameter of the tire that causes a problem, but the width. Your standard 30" tires will be 30x9.50's, meaning 30" diameter and 9.5" wide.
So, with the addition of a couple of washers to slightly reduce your turning radius, you can happily fit 31x10.50's without contemplating a lift.
In Thelma Jane's case, the spacers for the steering stops were not necessary. Must have been CLOSE, but no evidence of rubbing. My bud at work who has a 97 Sport with the Grizzly wheels, which also have 5.5" backspacing, DID have to use the spacers when he went to 10.50" width tires. It's not a big deal, if you do have to use them.
Although this wouldn't be necessary for 31" tires, you COULD go with a spacer lift. They are cheap and easy to insall... just spacers above your springs. You can go up to 1.75" or maybe even 2" with these. Would be best to buy longer shocks too, if you go that route. These spacers should not change the way your Jeep rides, since they are not the kind that go inside the coils and stiffen the springs. You might notice a little handling difference in corners, since you will have raised your center of gravity a little.
Tom
Have you hugged your Jeep today?
P.S. Just to clarify... the lift I mentioned has nothing to do with the tires rubbing on the inside. It's like Mac said: the tire WIDTH is what determines that. I just threw out the info on the spacer lift in case you wanted to go a little higher with your Jeep, but it would not be required for 31" tires.
It's the absolutely most beautiful day since who knows when, and I drove the 68 miles to Turkey Bay, just knowing that there would be Jeeps there on such a great Saturday. Well, guess what??? NOT A SINGLE JEEP WAS THERE. Hung around til about 11:00 AM, and still NO JEEPS! So, Thelma Jane, Ross Allen, and I drove the 68 miles to get back home. 136 miles for nothin'!
Can't believe no other Jeeps were there. Scads of four wheelers, but no Jeeps.
Buds, Ross Allen's arthritic limp has been more pronounced the last few days. I have had him on glucosamine/chondroitin for almost two months now, but it has made no apparent difference. I have even given him Rimadyl for these last few days, since his limp got worse. I didn't want to keep him on Rimadyl, since it has potential long term liver damage as a possible side effect.
Anyone have any suggestions? Leafchild, sure haven't heard from you in a while. Thanks for your previous advice, but if you have any more thoughts, please pass them on.
Can't you and Ross Allen do some easy trails when no one else is there?
My old pal Annabelle has had two knee surgeries and has severe arthritis in her front shoulder. She's been taking a Rimadyl a day for probably five years now. I know the risks but liver damage is not inevitable in every dog on Rimadyl and she is tested once a year to make sure all is OK. Without Rimadyl I don't know if she'd be able to keep on going. Not an advertisement but it's been the solution for us. Keep the weight off Ross Allen and keep him as active as he can be without causing pain.
Nice gesture on the 10,000th message, you might get reelected mayor. And I too appreciate mac24's excellent technical advice.
Thanks for the input! I had started RA on the Rimadyl on a daily basis a while back, but I couldn't tell that it was doing him any good, so I stopped giving it. I thought that there was no use taking chances on the side effects, if the stuff wasn't helping anyway. All I have to judge by is the severity of his limping, and I could see no difference for those few days that he was on the Rimadyl. The Rimadyl is supposed to work immediately, as I understand it, and it doesn't have to build up in a dog's system.
The glucosamine is a different story: it does take several weeks, I am told, before it makes a difference. It has been two months almost now that he has been getting that.
If the Rimadyl would help, I would give it to him every day, and we would take our chances on the long term liver damage possibility. RA is eight years old, so if it takes a LONG time for any damage to occur, at least he would get relief in the mean time.
Wish I knew a better way to determine how he is doing, but watching how much he limps is all I know how to judge by.
He never yelps in pain or anything, even when he jumps into or out of the back of the Jeep, which is a pretty good distance for him. But he walks with that limp! It seems that he favors his left front leg.
Geepers, I just didn't think driving around on the main trail or on the easy secondary trails would be enough fun to be worthwhile. I don't have to be doing anything real crazy, but I do like to have at least a little challenge. The "fun" stuff should not be done without another Jeep along.
I am still just amazed that with the weather being so beautiful and it being a Saturday, that there were no Jeeps there!
Thanks again, and good luck with your little bud, Annabelle. Ain't doggies the best buds a guy could ever have? I don't know what I would do without old Ross Allen.
You have become a off-roading connoisseur, no easy stuff for you.
Annabelle gets a lift in and out of vehicles. With her 95 pounds I may be the one taking Rimadyl before long. She has gotten so used to my being her slave that she hardly waits for me to get set up and practically jumps into my arms. Accompanied by a little outgassing on her part about 50% of the time. It's hard to tote 95 pounds while laughing.
Thanks for the laugh geepers, but I know exactly what you mean. We have an aging Rottie that has arthritic problems and we've taken the Glucosamine route. Over the past year I cannot emphasize what a difference it has made. She could hardly jump without whimpering before - now she's a rather rambunctious (if gassy) geriatric (often wrestling down our younger husky/shep cross).
Great stuff on the 10,000 posts. I was wondering who would take it. Thought it might end up in Toms hands, with Twylie and Mac definite possibilities. Keep on posting!
Dogs passing gas might be the last topic you would expect to find in a Jeep message board, huh?
RA is hilarious when he has a gas attack. It's like he has no idea he is going to do it, and when it happens, it scares him. He jumps up and turns his head around real quickly, like he is trying to see who snuck up behind him. Maybe he is just trying to blame it on someone else???
Tom
Have you hugged your Jeep today?
P.S. Ain't it great that we can post about anything we want to in here (within reason, of course), without somebody getting all bent out of shape over it? Try that on just about any other Jeep message board. No, DON'T try that anywhere else.
True enough. Now, the question is, does RA run away afterwards (whenever one of my previous four-legged buddies did so you knew it was time to exit the room - something about offended sensibilities I think)? ;-p
Anyway, I swear, last post on this particular subject from me!
What do you guys think about a technical discussion as another message board within the Jeep Owners Club? I would like for it to be specifically for Wranglers, so maybe it should be a sub group within Jeep Wrangler?
Mac, you know LOTS of mechanical stuff. Trey, you have real good knowledge about upgrading the sound system, and I would bet you know a lot about other stuff about Jeeps too. I'll bet we have other folks in here that have some expertise in various technical areas that would apply to Jeeps. We probably all have at least a little tip or two that we have picked up along the way.
So, why not have a separate message board that is dedicated to technical info that pertains to Wranglers? Currently, we wait until someone has a question, and then we respond. Well, the next time someone asks that question, we have to search back to find our original post, or we have to type the info all over again. If we had a technical message board, people could go there to find the info they need, and it would be a lot easier than searching through the 10K plus posts in here.
I love this message board, since we can talk about non-technical stuff, like just how much we love our Jeeps, or, just in general, have friendly banter. But, usually, the technical info is missing until someone asks a specific question. Then, that good technical info disappears into the sea of posts after a while.
Any thoughts on this, anyone? Steve? Tidester? What do our illustrious hosts think about this?
Mac, Twylie, would you guys be willing to write up a little technical dissertation maybe once a week? Just pick a specific topic for the week, and write something up on it. It would not have to be a detailed "how to," although that would be nice, but it could just explain what the purpose of some particular modification might be, what the negatives and positives would be if a person installed that mod, or something like that.
Steve and Tidester, could such a message board have sub-categories, so that posts on a particular subject could be kept together?
Thanks for the reply about larger tires and spacing, etc. It won't be something that I'll be doing anytime soon as I'm going to wait until the tread life of the 30"tires require new tires. Just out of curiousity, I checked out several spacer options in the Fall Quadratec catalog.
Tom: Great idea about a technical discussion for Jeeps (especially the Wrangler since it seems of the various models the Wrangler tends to be the most consistently modified).
Go ahead and set one up and we'll see what happens! If there is enough interest that would be great otherwise the computer will drop it into the archival abyss after a couple of months with no activity.
Unfortunately, there is no way to create subcategories. :-(
What if we created several new discussions, like one for suspension, one for lockers, one for this, and one for that??? Just start a separate discussion for each category. How would that be?
And, Tidester, do "reads" count toward keeping a discussion open, or just posts? Guess it's posts, right?
I think that basically what's being discussed is an FAQ section or sections. While in principle that isn't a bad thing, it usually only comes up for discussion when a forum is being repetitively flooded with the same questions, and that's not really the case here.
A lot of the newcomers (that actually post), usually start with a question. If they could look up the answer they probably wouldn't feel the need to come out of 'lurk' mode; and I doubt we'd have just passed the 10k mark if that was the case.
I'm not really against the idea, I just don't think we have the volume of tech questions to justify it.
Man, the last thing I would want would be for new folks to bypass the main group here. I want us to keep growing as a family. People might just grab what they need from the technical discussions and never even come here, right?
Let me suggest that you create a single board for discussing tech issues and, later, if you think demand warrants then you could consider specializing. My thinking is that it will be easier for people to find the information they are looking for if everything is one place.
What if we write up some technical posts on various subjects right here in Jeep Wrangler, then bookmark them? Whenever a question arises that a given post would address, we could refer to our bookmarks to find the appropriate post number, then pass it on to the person who has asked the question.
Just go with your original plan. Posting technical content here just in case you may refer someone else to it later would seem to defeat the purpose of discussion!
I've just been playing with the 'search' and it really does work very well. That would be the "Search This Discussion" at the top and bottom of this page. For instance, try searching for "Canyons" and you'll bring up about ten pages of posting links, starting with the most recent.
I guess it wouldn't hurt for someone (maybe Tom?) to make a short regular post that describes the nature of this discussion and to suggest when a check of the 'search' might be appropriate. It just needs to be saved as a file, then cut 'n pasted once a week maybe?
My vote is to keep it all on this discussion. I think the only other discussions should be "meet the members" and the "photos". Tom, for something you have to answer a lot just copy and paste it into a text file. When the question comes up again, copy and paste it here.
Stephen When going with wider tires you can get different rims with less backspacing. Your tires will stick out some more but you can turn your wheel all the way.

Anxious to hear from everyone on this.

Tom: Great idea about a technical discussion for Jeeps (especially the Wrangler since it seems of the various models the Wrangler tends to be the most consistently modified).
Stephen
Unfortunately, there is no way to create subcategories. :-(

And, Tidester, do "reads" count toward keeping a discussion open, or just posts? Guess it's posts, right?
Tom

A lot of the newcomers (that actually post), usually start with a question. If they could look up the answer they probably wouldn't feel the need to come out of 'lurk' mode; and I doubt we'd have just passed the 10k mark if that was the case.
I'm not really against the idea, I just don't think we have the volume of tech questions to justify it.
What do you other Buds think about this subject?

Let me suggest that you create a single board for discussing tech issues and, later, if you think demand warrants then you could consider specializing. My thinking is that it will be easier for people to find the information they are looking for if everything is one place.

How would that work?

Just go with your original plan. Posting technical content here just in case you may refer someone else to it later would seem to defeat the purpose of discussion!

I guess it wouldn't hurt for someone (maybe Tom?) to make a short regular post that describes the nature of this discussion and to suggest when a check of the 'search' might be appropriate. It just needs to be saved as a file, then cut 'n pasted once a week maybe?
Tom, for something you have to answer a lot just copy and paste it into a text file. When the question comes up again, copy and paste it here.

When going with wider tires you can get different rims with less backspacing. Your tires will stick out some more but you can turn your wheel all the way.
