Wow... the woods come right up to the house! Do you have a dog? Is that the reason for the fence?

The close up is of the piece at the top of the driveway in the long distance shot. Our plan is to run the fence behind that big tree and right behind the little pines maybe 20-30’ to the left then turn and head toward the driveway. Then over time clear out the underbrush inside the fence line and reclaim the space as part of the lawn and leave everything behind the fence wild.

When it’s drier out I can get some better shots.

So where is your neighbor going to throw his trash and old tires once you put up that fence?😫

    His problem.

Yes the back yard is somewhat short. But the lot is really wide. The fence is for when our grand dog is visiting.

I have many questions, and since I’m not responsible for what all of the below will cost I can feel free to make suggestions… B)

Why is the blacktop such an odd shape? It looks like it’s designed to force you off of it and into the gravel/grass if you turn left getting out of the garage. But maybe it’s an optical illusion.

That big tree would worry me. Being an evergreen it’s probably not a long-lived species. And it has multiple trunks coming up from the one main one which is a prescription for rot. You might want to get it taken out. Which reminds me of a story… :)

My neighbors across the street and their neighbors behind them are afflicted with several gigantic maples on their rear property lines. I suspect those trees must have been here when the area was first developed in the mid-‘50s. I would guesstimate their heights as about 60’. They are huge, with trunks about 3 feet in diameter at ground level, and multiple trunks splitting off that which are maybe a foot in diameter.

Two years ago in a not-very-severe storm one of them lost one of the trunks going up and fell into another neighbor’s yard. Aside from a bit of fence damage nobody was hurt, but it was a bear for that guy to get rid of because it was so large.

A few weeks ago another one came down in a different direction and landed on the roof of a neighboring garage. That did some damage too though less than I would have thought. But getting rid of that tree was too much for the homeowners. They got together and decided to get some quotes jointly to have 3 of them that remained in whole or in part taken out along with disposal of the one on the garage. The lowest quote was $4500 and over the last 2 weekend that crew has been up on ropes taking them down bit by bit. Access to them isn’t great so they can’t use a boom truck and have to climb and use ropes and chainsaws way up in the air. Not a job I would want. Trees can be an expensive pain for property owners.

Driveway is probably and optical illusion because there is slope to it. There are bump outs too and left to use for swinging into or out of the garage. Top one needs to be extended (they screwed up putting it in) but that can serve as overflow parking if needed.

I’ll look at the big pine. But the trees are a somewhat motley collection. I would prefer none fall on the house though.

My theory with trees is, if it looks like they lean away from the house so will fall on the neighbors I am much less concerned with them.

Some folks are just natural worriers. In Ohio our house was near the woods like yours and had many beautiful trees. Over the 30 years we lived there, we had a few come down occasionally in a storm. Most fell away from the house, but we did sustain one direct hit, however the main branch intertwined with another tree so the landing was softer. We just dealt with it. It was a gorgeous place to live. We had so many birds (and squirrels of course!). Our Amish neighbors could always be counted on to take care of any downed tree. One was a beautiful walnut tree and they very carefully sawed it for furniture wood. In fact they saved some for us and it became our fireplace mantel.

Neighbors had a large, old tree with big heavy main branches. A few smaller ones broke out in windstorms but a large one hung in a way that would have landed on our roof with a big SW wind to help propel it. I kept saying I hoped the tree gave way during one of the less common directions that strong winds blew from, like out of the south, so that it would hit their house. I had asked, suggested, hinted for decades that it needed to come down. But it didn't look sick. Finally the husband passed away and the wife had the back yard cleared and sodded, including taking down the tree.

The tree folks who cut up the large limbs had taken down a couple of trees for us. They showed us the main branch hanging toward out property. The inside was eaten away by huge black ants. They showed me the pieces of that limb on their truck waiting to be hauled away.

It verified that my being one of those "worriers" was justified. Even though the tree didn't show any ill effects where we could have forced the issue of needing to be removed for safety, the tree was on its way to breakup.

The widow now owning the property has done great things to keep it up that her husband wouldn't.

Yesterday I watched the 3 or 4 weather channels on my cable and one or two were totally zonked out about the hurricane coming. Today, I see why they were hyper. This puppy is gaining strength like Katrina and is going to smack the coast of Florida And give lots of rain and wind far up to Cincinnati.

Plus there's a front in the Appalachians giving lots of rain in advance of the gusts of this hurricane when they get to upstate South Carolina where our friends are now. That wet ground and the high winds remaining will topple trees easily and disrupt the power worse than usual.

Wow. They already raised gas prices back up here from the depressed prices because of the supply disruption expected.

Everybody in the Southeast be safe!

Not bursting any balloons but it seems that mileage can be cut to half in severely cold weather, and aren't you supposed to charge to 80% as charging to 100% also cuts battery life. btw, a friends Tesla ran out of charge, he tried to charge it from 0 and he blew out a generator (I think it was) and it cost $2000 Cdn to fix.

Tesla told him not to let it go below 5%. Those two things alone cut mileage by 25%. Just saying....actually just wondering....... :s

I don’t know. I can only go by what the owner’s manual says. I can only go by what the warranty states!

My car has a battery heater (for winter months) and a battery cooler (for summer months).

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, it looks like other owners couldn't find an answer to whether the battery should be charged to 100%.
    One letter:
The manual says more about when you should charge to 100% than it does about warning you not to charge to 100%. Specifically, you should charge to 100% once a month, and also when you drain it below 20%. This is probably to let the BMS recalibrate the individual cells.

It says precious little about not overcharging the battery. That's probably because 100% isn't really 100%; there's a buffer both above 100% and below 0%.

I wouldn't worry about letting it sit overnight at 100%. I wouldn't worry about charging to 100% if you need the range. once in a while. One thing to remember, however, is that regenerative braking may be disabled when there's no room in the battery to put the energy. If you're at the top of a hill and at 100%, you're using the friction brakes going down the hill.

The KIA EV Forum might be helpful for some questions: https://www.kiaevforums.com/threads/2023-ev6-awd-dont-let-vehicle-sit-at-100-for-a-long-time.7829/

My prayers for your safety, Kirstie. Our sirens have been sounding all morning warning of heavy thunderstorms and flooding. We get the rain bands on the east side of the storm which are producing 30-40 mph winds,

This storm is so powerful and wide that it affects us 300+ miles east of the eye.

The biggest risk for our area is flooding, since storm surge is predicted to be 8-10 feet. My house won't flood, as it would take much more than that to reach any entrance, but here are some "before" pictures to compare with the "after" pictures I'll take when the water moves in.

very nice color Mike. And that is a long car.

but there is a zero % chance I would ever buy a car without interior door handles. Who the heck thought it was safe to not be able to get out of the car if the battery died?

You have a point stick. I’ll check on that with my service department - just to find out if there is some fail-safe mechanism or back-up system in case of battery failure.

Finally got an answer to your question/reservation about no "handles" due to electronic door openers/closures - there is a safety switch just under the four armrests in the car that, when pulled up, manually opens each of the four doors in the car in the eventuality that power is lost.

My son leaves for Alaska early tomorrow, so today was "wrap up the parts car project" day. One of the steps was dropping off the car at its final resting place....

He ended up getting paid nearly $140 for that hulk, and he kept all sorts of parts and pieces off the car (most of which will hopefully be sold relatively soon). He's thinking that, including the engine, he should end up with more money in his pocket than the car cost him, including the cost of shipping the transmission and differential to Alaska (which will probably be about $350). Now, factoring in time......

As the storm moves north, we will begin to experience gale force winds which will blow the palm frons to the southeast. We really don't need all this rain because we are already well over the average rainy season inches of rain throughout the four southern Florida counties - Monroe, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Broward.

Thanks. I'm just going to drive it like a regular car. If the "tank gets low", I'll charge it up.

As pointed out previously, Kia is sending a Tesla adapter to me at no charge. Those, along with 1,000 hours of included Electrify America credits from KIA, I'm not worried about charging, how to charge, when to charge or where I can charge.
I would do the same. But they should make it clear what to do. I think the newer chargers know to cut off charging at 80%, but, who really knows if they don't tell you.

I was walking with my upright walker in the mall this morning at around 10:15 AM and as I passed the Apple Store, I noticed that the store was almost empty. So I walked in and started looking at the iPhone 16+ (larger version of the standard iPhone 16). They sure made some major improvements when comparing my iPhone 13. So I talked to a salesperson and, before 20 minutes had elapsed, I was buying it with several accessories (screen protector, high speed charger, 2 meter cord, etc).

They gave me a $250 credit for my phone and since I don’t need lots of memory, I stayed with the 128 gig model. Also got a case to protect the phone if I ever dropped it. Final cost with taxes was around $850. After spending several hours updating my credit card apps and banking apps, I found myself enjoying the upgrades. Longer lasting battery life is a big plus for me as are the improved graphics and size of the screen. Processor is lightning fast and it’s much easier on my eyes.

I usually keep my iPhones for 3-4 years which works out well for me. I would highly recommend this iPhone 16+ for those who enjoy using apple phones.

I was thinking of upgrading. Of course we just finished paying off the 13s we got 2 years ago so should probably enjoy that for a while. I would like better battery life. Might have to see if VZ will give us free ones if we switch back to them.

I like my 13, also got it 2 years ago. It still has great battery life so I’m not tempted yet. I usually keep mine about 4 years. At this point putting my energy into convincing the spouse to trade in an ancient SE — with no success.

after all rain the last 2 days and some warm temps and sun today, my new grass really exploded. Tall enough now in most spots I should really give it a trim. so will break out the Ego tomorrow afternoon when it is nice and dried off. Should look pretty good but it did seem to fill in quite a bit this week.

I did some reading on when to mow (as always, quite a variety of opinions!) but one common theme was when you trimmed down the tall new shoots, it tended to cause the grass to start growing out instead of up so should help fill in the thin spots.
