Finally got some long awaited news this week. that awful Windfall Provision Act from 1984 was repealed meaning I, and my fellow federal workers and some teachers, will finally get our full social security check instead of some ridiculous fraction we've been getting. We all paid in so we deserve our full amount truthfully and feel like the as-hats back in 1983 stole from all us hard workers! Pure theft on their part! But now, starting with our January check hopefully, we'll all get what we're supposed to get...yay!!!! Sometimes the federal government does do the right thing and fixes a serious wrong. And it's long overdue to. Now, to be compensated from the post office to be wrongly fired over a simple lie on their part!!! Give us a fair settlement for that illegal action!!!

Japan is not a huge country. They will do whatever is possible to support their business.
The company I worked for supported insurance products for several domestic arms of Japanese companies.
Their clients were just about other Japanese companies.

If he wasn't married to my sister I would have gone full blown "you're an idiot" mode. I did remind him that ignorance can be combatted by staying silent instead of spouting off with no knowledge of the topic at hand.

We then went into the discussion about Honda buying Nissan. That raised the question about what would be axed. I think Acura would take over whatever is left of Infiniti and that Honda would continue developing EVs based on Nissan's Leaf and Ariya offerings. Not much Nissan/Infiniti can offer past all that.

Love the Nissan 3.7 V6, but not sure it can pass emissions or CAFE any more. 3.0TT may be an option.

Has anyone seen a Nissan Z car on the road? I know I haven't. It's been out a while, too. Prelude is being re-released. Maybe some merging of the Z/Prelude?

    Should be interesting.

I have seen 1 or maybe 2 of these New Nissan Z cars on the road since they came out.
They are not selling. According to CarEdge there is a 350 day supply sitting on dealer lots, and according to them the highest of any other car.

My BIL showed up on Christmas Day with a new Honda Pilot midnight edition. The 3 row SUV was fully loaded...HUD, Heated & ventilated seats 3D camera, Bose sound, Pano roof, etc. I am not a fan of the all black including wheels and badging but that seems to be a trend. He claimed he got $5K off MSRP and seems he paid around $55K I guess out the door.

It was pretty nice but I was not impressed with the interior given the price.

$5K off seems about right. These aren't selling as well as expected. Also the price point is a lot for a family that "needs" a 3 row SUV. The higher trim levels seem to be getting healthy discounts due to the fact their expense.

OF, was a strange day today. We only moved one vehicle in the crew I was with today. My lead was on vacation, so I was loaned out. We sat all morning and finally went to lunch at 11:45. At 1:30, got a run to move one vehicle from one branch to another, so I volunteered. Turns out to be a newer Suburban and took it to the office right by my house. Drove nicely really for such a big rig. Finally ay 3:10, we got the "safe to say" text meaning our day was over. Got back to the office and two crew's were still out. Washed up and clocked out at 3:20. First time we only moved one vehicle. Back in May when I was still in the big bus, the 15 packer, there was one day when we didn't move a single vehicle. Days like this never happen but most branches had all their vehicles rented and there were no sold vehicles for us to deliver.

I work the next two days which is fine as my other half is up in St. Augustine with our daughter for a vacation. Seems they texted me to come in Thursday but my phone must've been off because I didn't notice it until almost 9:30. Oh well, was just as happy to stay home. And really, it'll all come out in the wash.

We worked Thursday. I assumed it would be slow the day after Christmas and I was right, only 13 hours or so….🤣🤣

I wonder how many of them have or had "market adjustment stickers" of multiple thousands of dollars along with thousands of dollars in NISMO accessories that were also roped off in the middle of the dealership like it is a 911 GT3 RS or GTR.

Speaking of, I still see GTRs every once in a while. I know they've been out forever and haven't changed, but to me they still look awesome!

Anyway, I think you're right. They also had market adjustment stickers. No thanks! Could be why they aren't selling.

I think the next few days are going to be crazy, in terms of folks asking us for information.

I know the CO $5350 credit for EV and PHEV vehicles ends on 12/31; a new credit is coming, that is less, but I can't remember the amounts off the top of my head.

Plus, it's entirely possible the federal tax credit for EVs could either go away or be reduced significantly, which might spur folks into action.

My daughter got started looking today. Took he mazd in for an oil change and decided to just test drive something (a CX50 hybrid). As I expected shortly after I was getting texts with numbers. Did not make sense and the dealer was not IMO being upfront (turns out she was not comfortable with the experience either) so no impulse buy. And very sketchy details on terms (a post it note? Really) so won’t be buying there. But it is a strong contender.

A lot of the "new" manuals underwhelm me. I really don't like the rev matching that can't be turned off. I practiced heel-toe starting at my first HPDE and I now do it almost subconsciously whenever I drive a stick- even my 1999 Wrangler.

The Si has rev-matching, fortunately it can be disabled. It’s averaging 37mpg in a mixture of driving. The only negative is, it sure is a lot lower to the ground than we’ve gotten used to. Our last sedan was a 2022 Model 3, but we only had it a few months before trading it for a Model Y. Before that, we had a 2018 Toyota Camry XLE.

I’m wondering if we should replace gee’s RAV4 this year. The miles are adding up fast. It’s at 62k now. The thought is to pass it down to our 13 y/o as his first car in a few years and the youngest who is 11 now will get the Si.

Upgrading the 14 Odyssey is also on the top of mind.

We may be good for 1 punch in 2025

Took the Maverick to my parents' place over the holiday. I had asked for new pillows and a year's supply of furnace filters from Costco on my Christmas list, so the cargo area in the Ariya would have probably fallen short. My senior dog doesn't do well with car rides anymore, and wouldn't take half of her tranquilizer, even though I had split the pills up in to fourths. Her teeth were chattering as soon as I started the car, which distracted me and I only looked left when backing out of the driveway. Fortunately, (barely) didn't back into the approaching car from the right.

Had a lot of good food and time with my parents. Decided to completely crush the tranquilizers and put them in the doggo's wet food for the trip back, and the doggo eventually ate it (after further dilution with more wet food) and was much calmer (but still not completely calm) on the ride back.

Love our Kia, and the dealer is 70 miles away. We just took it in for routine maintenance — it was an all day experience ( short handed before Xmas). Once a year it’s okay though. So it’s nice to have a local Chevy dealer for the second vehicle.

I was talking with my sister yesterday. Her and her husband are planning on attending the San Diego Auto show today.

Apparently, my BIL is up for a significant promotion (to CFO of his non-profit) and a raise to go with it, so of course he wants to scope out a new (or nearly new) car to celebrate.

He first had his eyes on the 4-series Grand Coupe, but my sister vetoed that because of its looks. She prefers the Audi A5 Sportback, which I also like.

However, since she complains about high gas prices in CA, I've suggested they look at a hybrid or PHEV vehicle, given that his commute is pretty long (though he only goes into the office 2-3 days a week). My recommendation would be a Volvo S60 or S90 PHEV, seeing how much they like their current XC40.

I don't know their budget, but I suspect lightly used versions of the above vehicles would price out OK for them.

An EV would work better for them than a PHEV, because the plug ins are less efficient than a regular hybrid on a long commute. It is so easy to charge in Southern California, and so nice not to have to pay high gas prices!

spent more time consulting with the princess. They went out today to a different Mazda dealer (that had the exact car they want, in the color combo desired). They got to take a solo test drive and really love it. So got with the guy there to work numbers. They could not come close to the sketchy (literally, they won't do a formal deal sheet, just jot down some numbers on a scratch pad) offer from the other dealer (which my daughter got a bad vibe from). The new place, she loved the vibe there! Anyway, that guy explained a lot of things about the process with the lease, figured out which option worked best, and basically treated them like people. But, they could not come close to the trade value the 1st place came up with, or the amount of discount on the new unit.

They did actually tell her to go back there if that price was real, but also gave her a bit of backstory on how that place works (grain of salt, but in this case, I believe them). It was more of "what to watch out for" and explaining that they somehow run their own auction instead of wholesaling. But they flat out said they were known to refuse to supply an actual deal sheet up front, and you didn't find out what they had left out until deep into the finance office. Scummy way to do business, but probably works enough that they keep doing it.

we talked about options, and she might go back to them to see if they can supply any more details, but bottom line, she did not want to deal with them again (moral principals) and would likely hold off a bit and revisit the situation around presidents day when hopefully could do a lease pull ahead to just turn that back in and wipe out the last few payments, and just do a clean buy deal. At the dealer she wanted to work with! Doing it now basically came down to making the last 5 payments, but not using the car for the 5 months left on the lease.

The whole deal got really complicated. And was confusing the kids since they never dealt with car deals before on their own. So I worked through options and sold them on separating the lease run-out from buying a new car "clean deal" later in the winter.

the least expires 6/7. They are looking at this now because they are getting married 2 weeks after that so it would be a lot easier to get it out of the way (time wise and cash flow!) Waiting also means I can go explore a bit with the dealers local to here, for some other options.

having a trade in, really complicates things. And since it is leased, they don't get any kind of sales tax credit, so really doesn't help being rolled into the deal.

Isn’t it better to figure out what you want to pay before you step into a dealership? Then if the dealer gives you a phenomenal deal you can jump on it but if they play game give them your OTD offer and be prepared to walk.

Like a lot of things (including the touchpad in the RDX) that are different, people that have not learned how they work react poorly and bad mouth the system. But once you get used to it, it becomes 2nd nature and works fine. She has no issues with using it in her CX 30. But the time I drove that (without her) and had no instructions (or time to read the manual) I was lucky to get a radio station to play!

plus the red interior on that model is really sharp looking.

They had that today. Yesterday I did not even know they were going to the dealer (to get an oil change) until she called to ask what they should look at since they were there. So there was no preparation (and not supposed to be negotiating), but we all know how that goes! We went over all the numbers and options, so they had a defined range (definitely take, try to lower but probably take, and walk away). and questions to ask. So it was a good experience, and they got to see the color combo they liked in person, and had another test drive to make sure.

Taking the Golf into my mechanic on the 6th and let him fix the a/c issue and do the coolant change if needed. Same thing with the front brakes. Am renting a car from Enterprise for a couple of days just to make things easier. We get a pretty good deal with our Friends & Family discount so put in for a new Kona like vehicle and comes to $21/day plus the full insurance which we have to take. Will come to under $70 for those couple of days which I can live with so won't have to bother the other half and I'll have wheels to go to work on the 7th. Fixing these issues will give me another year hopefully so I can look at a 2026 GTI & be done with it. Think it'll be the best way to move forward.

Finally got to drive the new 2025 Hyundai Kona at work this weekend and was not impressed! Nice size but think our 2023 drives just as nice and it's a better size that we like. It wasn't the "Limited" model that I'd want to get so it didn't have all the extras that I want. Nice enough but, just didn't do anything for me...that silly grin I get from my Golf was lacking, so it's probably off my short list. Think the 2026 GTI will be the one that I eventually go with. But I could go larger as moving has been put back on the table it seems. After much thought, the other half decided that working for her current boss another two years makes sense. She can do her TurboTax gig from anywhere and cut down her weekly hours to a more manageable level which means we can relocate to be closer to the girls. Not sure I'm going to work once we move but that will depend on where we do end up. Think this is the best plan going forward as we want to be closer to the kids, within an hour if possible.

Sandy, is Florida still the dealer snake pit I see portrayed in YouTube videos. Do they still play the add on and dealer mark up games? About a year ago my BIL bought a Nissan Maxima near Orlando and it was all I could do to not tell him he was played. On a model that’s being discontinued (should have been big discounts) he had to pay for a list of useless mop&glo add ons totaling thousands. He didn’t say but I’m sure he got hit with the notorious Florida doc fee. The dealer treated him like they were doing him a favor selling it to him and would only accept wire transfers for payment. I hate to think how badly he got clubbed in F&I.

I’d hate to think they are still pulling that stuff today.

What year is the RAV4? It is an XLE Hybrid? FWD or AWD? 62K miles isn't a tremendous amount of miles on a RAV4. We've got 62K miles on our '22 Highlander that will be 3 years old at the end of February 2025.

    @Michaell

Didn't you have a Hyundai Elantra GT similar to this one?

Yep, that’s exactly the model year and color of the one I leased.

I liked those. That’s what I was looking at (the loaded GT version) before I cheated out and bought my Elantra sport 4 door. Same drivetrain, $5k cheaper!

The clown car is back in the fold. Quite the ordeal to get it here thanks to U-Haul’s janky equipment. It tried to lose the car 3 times. At the 3rd stop, I gave up using the trailer as intended and strapped the car to it with my own straps that I luckily brought along. That didn’t help the fact the trailer couldn’t go in reverse nor that the brake would sometimes pulse and jerk the whole van while driving 65 mph. But at least the front wheels remained planted with my straps.

When I went to UHaul today, I tried to inform the clerk the trailer is dangerous and to not rent it back out, but his reply was “yeah, they are all terrible.”

I have a trailer but it is very big and I’d have nowhere to park it in SC.

Yes, the clown car is here in NJ now.

I had a dream today that I traded the Acura for a WRX, and got a cheap lease EV6 (they have those in NY too?) for the wife to drive. would have to park something outside though, So need to sell the Maverick and get a beater work truck instead.

Seems like a completely logical plan to me, and would end up with some money in the bank to offset a small lease payment. Pretty sure the wife will be 110% on board when I explain it to her. Really all I need to do is get her to test drive the EV and fall in love with it!

oh, I was also awake at the time. The downside to working when I don't want to. We make money that I want to spend on something automotive!

Just curious but what do you have in the Sierra now that it is sorted? I know that old trucks used to be cheap but sadly have gotten silly expensive.

I’m surprised they haven’t been sued. I’ve rented trucks from them and I don’t believe they were legal to be on the road. Every time I had to point out broken or non functional parts so I wouldn’t get charged. Conversely, I rented from Penske and it was like getting a brand new truck. More expensive of course.

I’ve rented a few Uhaul trucks/trailers over the years and never had one I felt was unsafe. They were certainly well used though. Probably just got lucky.
