I like those for the nostalgia and wacky styling - not pretty, but pretty wild at the time. I'd want it to look 100% stock, and IMO a LHD car has more cred as it has survived and is not a new private import. Maybe get a TT Targa with automatic just to upset the shift-yourselfers (probably also a car with a high theft rate).
It is the Bullitt Mustang for late gen X/millennials. The Autos get a lot of hate for sure. Check out the comments on THIS 1995 Toyota Supra Turbo There is a company in TX (I think) that buys Supras, does all the deferred maintenance, fixes and restores broken interior bits & seats, then resells. They will also manual swap the car for a price as well.

The funny thing about all these halo Japanese sports cars from the early - mid 90's (Supra, RX7, 300ZX, 3000 GT) is that for the most part they were driven hard, crashed, modified within an inch of their life. People changed the wheels, lowered the suspensions, installed giant spoilers, gaudy body kits, bigger turbos, and freer flowing exhausts. The ones that have been barely driven and kept in relatively stock form are worth a lot of money.

Guess which cars from that era were maybe not as sexy from a technology standpoint, but were lightweight, RWD, V8 powered, laughed at by the press and most import enthusiasts? Parts are easily available, the cars have been generally well cared and have low miles for because their owners only drove them on Sundays and used diapers to polish them. Late model C4s and C5 Corvettes are reasonably priced in today's market given their condition a miles as well as availability of the 6 Speed Manual Transmission. I dig the C5 Z06!

Here is a 2004 Corvette Z06 that is 9 years newer, has a 6-Speed Stick, less miles, and ends in 2 days just like the Supra I linked above.
That is a really nice Corvette, and no doubt is a lot of car for the money, a value. Not meaning to insult anyone B) , I am still not sure if I am old enough for a Corvette, while I may be closing in on too old for the Supra (I am a late Xer but it almost seems like too much intentional nostalgia, I could probably deal with it if someone just gave me one though). I like/d the Supra, but even back in the day my tastes went to MB, a period AMG or V12 MB, while no doubt much more dramatic to own in terms of maintenance expense, got to me more. It'll be interesting to see what the black Supra goes for.

The C5s are quite affordable now, especially if you want a driver and are willing to put up with a few blemishes.

For me, it’s not about the headlights. It’s about the front and rear overhangs relative to the wheelbase. And I think the C6 manages that better than the C5. It makes the design cleaner and more taut looking, to my eyes.

Yep, the C6 is superior by every metric but I like the looks of the C5. I was enamored of hidden headlights since they came out in the 60s. I also liked the sequential tail lights on Cougars.

Excellent points. I think the popularity of the 2 fast-2 furious movies had something to do with it. Not a good reason, but a reason nonetheless.

Most of the Japanese modded Supras, Zs, 300GTs, etc that I've seen modified were not done well. And, their condition proves it.

Exactly why pristine examples of the Supra, 300ZX, 3000GT, etc go for so much money... they were heavily modified by the owners at the time.

Oh, unrelated, I’m going to apply for classic status on the Alfa. For an extra $30, I can get personalized plates. Here are the choices I’m thinking:

I think it would be a JIM, though, since it isn’t a domestic brand for them.

I don’t think I get your first one. Maybe 1FIFT6?

The one I’m avoiding is AR-156 since I think that could be confused with a gun.

Update from CA - financial reality is starting to hit my middle nephew. He's starting to realize that both his expectations and his budget need to be altered.

He's widening the field of choices, but he still wants a hybrid. He may have to drop down a size, or look at something slightly older and with more miles, to fit his goals.

Apparently, he's been pre-approved for a loan, but I don't know the details.

I’m not a fan of black wheels in most cases. To me they look like old steel wheels that lost a hub cap.

Well, how about this, then? My son bought a set of black wheels for his Forester. They were very inexpensive (which is why he has black), but have a dual bolt pattern (5x100 and 5x114, IIRC), so one set of holes that are not used by the car, AND they do not have a hub cap (the little cap that goes in the center of aluminum wheels).

He is checking all the boxes! :D

Drop the hybrid. He will still better than double his mileage, save a lot on purchase, and otherwise be able to get the car he wants.

A 2025 Camry without any options has an msrp of $29,895 with destination.

It looks like some these days are getting around a thousand or even two off of list on the Camry, although I think many are paying full list or even more.

Interesting to me is that the Civic hybrid with destination is $30,490, which is $600 more than the Camry LE.

The Corolla hybrid is a significant step down, but with destination lists for $25,770, saving 4k off of the Camry.

If a non-hybrid was in the running, the awd Subaru Imprezza base is $25,530.

If he's gotten pre-approved for a car loan at a bank, the interest rate is probably around 7% or so.

For a 5 year loan of 25k the interest payments for a 7% loan would be about $5000

In comparison, Subaru has 5 year loans on the Crosstrek of 1.9%.

For a 5 year loan of 25k at 1.9% the total interest paid would be about $1250., which would save $3700 over a bank loan.

I appreciate the information, but I'm deliberately not overstimulating him with information. He has his preferences, and I don't want to push an agenda onto him.

I don't know anything about the loan he's qualified for. He's a smart kid - he was accepted into West Point, but had to decline due to a nut allergy - and this process is about him making his own decisions, not the ones his mom or uncle are making for him.

they have no interest in a lease? one of the use cases that makes sense is a younger person starting out that can make a payment but does not have a lot of money to put up.

Oh, I know. The ALF connection kind of appealed to me. lol.

Came to a decision on my first choice:
SLOALF (I hope there will be separation like all NJ plates but maybe not)

    They ask for 3, so I'm going with (2) ALF156 and (3) 98ALFA

spending my life in the NE, home of the worlds biggest potholes, has made me very aware of the benefits of a substantial amount of rubber on the wheels.

One more comment about sidewall and we are all going to chip in on your birthday to get you a set of these:

I could go for a Macan EV as the one negative of the Macan Turbo is that it likes to guzzle gas (though my commute is much less these days). The negative of the Macan EV is that I could get three '18 Macan Turbos for how much they were asking in the showroom.

I’ve seen plates without separation… you may have to specify.

    I like SLOALF

I've entered several raffles for new BMWs; should I win one it will be immediately sold or traded for something that I'd actually want.

Quick update. Nephew got approved for a $20K loan from a local credit union for 5.49%. Need to find the loan term, but he's found an Accord Hybrid Sport close by that he's interested in.

not that much less than a new one. But I guess if that is the most you can spend, that's what you get.

A new Hybrid Sport retails for about $35K, so a decent discount. Yes, the Honda tax is alive and well.

@oldfarmer50 - I've liked the Brooks shoes I've had (Uncle Warren encourages stockholders to spend money at the company store, and they own Brooks). Merrill are also really good.

my running (well, I walk in them) shoes are Saucony's, but my wife will only Brooks. my casual slip on summer shoes are Sketchers. Most comfortable boat style shoes out there.

love my Columbia hiker boots too.

and I case I ever get a Corvette, I do have a fresh pair of New Balance white cross trainers upstairs. And my knee high tube socks from the 80's are still floating around too!
