I have the same equip. on my 01
Part of the transaction was the tow pkg. which the dealer instated that day at Lexus of Pleasanton in Calif.
Very happy with the RX I have 2000 miles on in 3 weeks. Great in snow and ice I live at 6000 feet in the mountains and need awd to get home.
The dealer is stroking you about the tow pkg
  • rmorin2rmorin2 Member Posts: 110
My '00 RX has the tow hitch. It was installed by the dealer but is a genuine Lexus hitch. The cost is higher than an aftermarket hitch but if the dealer installs it, then the hitch and the wiring is covered by the new car warranty. I believe it was around $300.

Our car is still experiencing a resonating rumble at idle when in gear. If anyone has any ideas please post as the dealer has not been able to diagnose the problem. Thanks.

I was to get one on my "special order" RX. It didn't come with it and I was told they would get one at a good price since they often take them off of cars when people don't want a hitch. When I finally got them to quote me a price it was about $600 and they said that they never get all the parts from one they take off. Generally I have felt good about the dealer but this was not a good experience.

what mountains to you live in. If I had to guess by your elev it's in the sierras(or wasatch foothills). What kind of tires do you have and what have been your experiences at chain checkpoints? I live in AZ but plan on taking several road trips up to the sierras/wasatch later this winter, I've heard conflicting reports on what to expect at the checkpoints. I already took my rx up to SLC for a skiing but ran into no weather and the vehicle navigated the ski areas icy parking lots with no hint of a skid or even the tires spinning. So I'm not inclined at the moment to upgrade ny current Goodyear Integritys. I need your input, thanks.

I live in Modoc County N/E county in Calif. 20 miles s/w of Alturas, Calif. I put Pirelli Norseman snow tires on my 01 RX. I also have a suburban and a 97 ford f150 both 4X4s. The RX has the best traction on ice and snow then any 4X4 I have ever owned. I will mount my Bridgestones on mags and use them in the summer I have tried to break it lose on packed snow with little sucess. It is a great vehicle in snow and ice. The snow tires make the difference.

Does anyone know about any "hidden features" that the dealer can program on a '01 RX 300? My Audi was able to have the computer programmed to automatically lock the doors at 15 mph and unlock when turning off the engine. Any hidden features like this?

Found these pics on the internet...from what I've heard regarding the new grill and silver rather than wood interior accents, this sure does look like it might be the new special edition.

What is the "thing" sitting on the left side of the top of the dash at the base of the A pillar?
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
That "thing" is the left tweeter.

Usually at the end of a models' run before a redesign a manufactor puts out this "special edition" type of vehicles they offer no benefits over the existing model other than estetics. Although, this edition probably has the L-tuned suspension thats been talked about for awhile now. I beleave that the camry/es300 is due for a redesign in 2002. With the RX to follow shortly. Also to tonychrys Congrats on the new RX I know you'll like it I see that other RX owners have convinced you about this vehicle, sorry I didn't give you my +'s & -'s although I'm sure you'll have your own list very soon. Lastly you might want to change your user name to tonylexus!!

Actually, the "chrys" part of my username does NOT stand for Chrysler, if that was what you were thinking. Heaven forbid!

Thanks for the congrats. My pick up date is set for Saturday, but now we're set to get heavy rain or snow in NY. I really wanted a clear day to inspect the car before I drive off. I'm torn between postponing and just picking it up anyway. I need my new toy!

Supposedly the next-generation RX300 is going to be based on the Highlander, which itself is based on the Camry platform but is a newer adaptation. Obviously it would have different sheetmetal but similar underpinnings.
  • ruskiruski Member Posts: 1,566
it is actually the other way around - the Highlander is based on the current Camry and RX300 design
  • wmquanwmquan Member Posts: 1,817
They're all based on the Camry platform, but allegedly (see below) the Highlander is a newer adaptation of the Camry platform, that the next-gen RX will be derived from. It does borrow some RX parts. Almost like they're all feeding off of each other; go figure.

According to James Healey's USA Today review of the Highlander:

"Highlander is ... atop mainly Camry hardware."

"When it's time for the inevitable RX re-do in a year or two, it'll go on the chassis that Highlander uses today, which means more space and refinement."

It is a fairly different vehicle than the RX. Larger, more cargo room, larger payload weight, an allegedly smoother ride, but WAY different sheetmetal and lesser appointments. While I personally don't care for the Highlander's styling, I think the next-generation RX will do well to incorporate the Highlander's chassis improvements.

    Hello to all RX300 owners,

I'm very much ready to get RX300 . Are you all happy with RX? Any comments, inputs or suggestion is appreciate.

    Thank you to all,
  • spakcharspakchar Member Posts: 37
The lexus is a great car, it's not a truck. It's not for serius off roading. It's not made to transport more than 3 people and luggage for a weeks vacation. It does provide a cocoon of luxury comparable to any vehicle out there. It has an aesthetic comparable to any vehicle out there. Like all Lexi it has superior fit and finish, and reliability. It's fun and invigorating to drive and might be the safest car on the road. It is probably has the cheapest cost of operation of any luxury SUV (relative fuel economy/reliability). In short this is a great choice for a couple who go to fancy places and take frequent long road trips, it fits in anywhere.
I love my RX when I get behind the wheel life is a little sweeter.
  • simba2ksimba2k Member Posts: 5
Thank you very much SPAKCHAR. I have a choice between RX300 and ML320. I try to get as much info as I can.
  • mvs1mvs1 Member Posts: 462
To all, the Highlander or a variation of it was available overseas at least a year or two before the RX. When I purchased my RX in 99' I was skeptical at first until I heard Toyota WOULD NOT bring the Highlander to the states. At the time of my purchase the projected sales of the RX were 30,000 annually. Toyota is now trying to maximize profits by bringing a lower cost version to the states. The Highland /RX/Camry mechanically the same (well almost), even though the highlander is a bit longer, etc. I've seen pictures of it and in person at the new York auto show last year, trust me its the same car. My original comments were just on the Silver Sport benefits (if any) and some generalities about the auto industry as a whole.

    Simba2k:

The following opinion is based on driving my wife's '00 RX300 on occasion, and on using a '00 ML320 loaner for a couple of hours while my C320 Tele Aid software was being "reflashed".

The ML is bigger inside than the RX, and is not as luxurious. The ML is basically a truck, while the RX rides and drives like a car. They are quite different vehicles and your choice should be based on how you intend to use it. As a sidenote, I was surprised to see that the ML had all the knobs and switches for the Nav system, but when you pushed or turned any of them, the screen would say "Navi System Not Installed" or something to that effect. Why doesn't it just say "Cheapskate!"? I would not want the controls for some accessory present if I don't have the accessory itself. But I guess the RX has a CD button even if you don't have the CD changer????
  • mvs1mvs1 Member Posts: 462
The RX can have a CD installed at a later date if you did not order on originally, hence the CD button. Maybe a Nav can also be installed in an ML at a later date. Your comments are on the money my co-worker has an ML the interior is spartan, definitely more of a truck than the RX. But if you think about it who would take a $40,000 "truck" off road anyway. The SUV has evolved into more of a snowbuster than a true offroader.

I was set to pick up my loaded Black/ivory Nav AWD tomorrow, but due to impending bad weather and the bank not clearing my funds yet, have postponed till Monday morning.

I feel like a crack addict going into withdrawl...
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
If the navigation CD was not inserted in the drive (likely since you got a loaner vehicle), you will get an error message on both the Lexus and MB. There is only one knob and a couple of buttons that you use for the ML's GPS. The rest are for controlling the radio, the handsfree cellphone, etc. That's why it's called the MCS - Multi-component system.

The ML does ride firmer (as most European vehicles do vs. Japanese vehicles) than the RX, but that's the way that it was intended. I didn't particularly like the soft feel of the RX or the light and numb steering. Note that the shocks and springs have to be firmer due to the ML's heavier curb weight and significantly higher payload capacity (1350lbs vs. the RX's 950lbs).

mvs1, actually quite a few people do take their $40K SUVs off-road. Off-road instructors have been saying that their seeing more and more MLs in the off-road classes/courses. Considering that most people buy these vehicles for their foul weather flexibility though, your snow buster comment is appropriate.

Tony, good luck with your delivery tomorrow! Remember to take it easy for the first little while.

Delivery not tomorrow, postponed till Monday.

WRT to RX handling, yes, it is a cushier ride but many folks swear that a) the '01s have tightened up a bit and b) throw a set of Michelin LTXs on and the RX becomes a more responsive ride. Don't know why Lexus throws such garbage tires (goodyears) on an upscale vehicle.

  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
ML owners have also had good luck with the Michelin LTX M/S tires. However, since those tires have a lower load rating than our stock tires, I do not recommend them to other ML owners. The Michelin Cross Terrains or Pirelli Scorpion S/T tires both seem like good choices and are available in stock load rating and tire sizes.

You should have a look at Consumer Reports test of the LTX M/S; if you don't have it, I can try to dig it up for you. It was good, but not the best tire (it was only so-so in certain areas, I believe). The highest rated all-season SUV tire was the BFgoodrich Long Trail T/A. If they do make it in the RX's size, I'd recommend those instead of the (admittedly crappy) Goodyear Integrity tires.

I test drove a '01 RX just recently - about 2 weeks ago - and didn't notice any significant difference to the previous model years. However, I did notice that the Toyota Highlander's ride was definitely slightly tauter than the RX's. It's still rather softish compared to the MDX or ML though...Pros and cons for both configurations.

with our RX300. One trip to Chicago in our 2000 QX4 and it was dumped as quickly as possible. Whatta POS!

The RX is comfort. Its built well. It is worth every penny. The A/C cools & dehumidifies & maintains an even temperature (vs the QX4).

My wife got it after riding wiht a coworker in his ML320. It was just OK, she felt. Not as good a ride in her opinion. ML320 had been in the shop so much he dumped his ML320 shortly after my wife got the RX. He now has an RX. Hes very happy.

Too many people getting RX tho. Seems they will be the beetle of the future!

I never cease to be amazed by the many engineering triumphs cranked into my X. For example, for the past few weeks I've had to drive from Phoenix to Tucson and back 2 or 3 times a week--a 200 mile, 4 hour trip--for medical care. Now, I have a bad lower back and can only do half the driving; my wife does the rest. I've thought how great it would be if I could lie flat when I wasn't driving. I tried lying on the back seat. Forget it! I'm six one and the fetal position doesn't help my back.

One day as I rode on the passenger side I simply lowered that seat as far down as it would go. Wow! I can lie completely flat, even on my back, with my legs fully stretched out. With a comfortable pillow under my head it's almost as good as my bed at home.

A warning, though. Reclining like this is dangerous while moving since the shoulder harness won't work correctly during an accident. Still, with my poor health and bad lower back, I consider it worth the risk. By the way, on these highway miles I cruise at 75-78 MPH, AC off this time of year, in my AWD model with 87 oct. gas on Good- year Integrity tires. I'm getting 22.5 to 23 MPG.

Buy RX! Enjoy! Enjoy! Joe Tuso

What was the problem with the QX4? The 2000 model's already got the 240hp motor, right?

I have read a number of posts slamming the off road capabilities of various SUVs. It should be fairly obvious to anyone that what constitutes a good off road vehicle depends on exactly where you live. In NW lower MI we have mostly sand bottom two tracks with pine and cedar sweepers encroaching into the track and if you drive by, even carefully, you will be a candidate for a repaint job when you get home. So no one, unless they have more money than sense does this with a high end SUV. Additionally, If you play this game in late November you could wake up next morning needing to navigate through 5 miles of 24 inch deep wet snow to get to a paved road. And of course if there is a 16 inch blow down across the track you had better have a chain saw or a cell phone.
Scrambling an SUV over rocks does not happen around here. We import all our rocks from Ohio.
The ideal SUV is a four year old Ford F-250 4X4 with an electric winch on the front bumper, a come-a-long and a chain saw in the pick-up bed.
Please, enough of posts that write as if every off road expedition is above timberline in Montana.

As I mentioned on a previous post I'm getting a new 300SE as well. Mine is to be delivered to my home on Tuesday evening. (the day after yours).

Maybe we should compare our fortunes to see how on each side of the pond Lexus deals with its customers.

The only goodies I'm getting is a towing hitch for my caravan (trailer). Not bothering with the Nav system as the one I saw here shows the map upside down to the way I read maps.
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
Hey good luck to you too.

Maps are upside down, huh? Well, I guess the way we drive on this side of the pond is backwards also ;-)

Seriously though, I didn't really consider getting Nav at first. But I got too good of a price to pass up. I also think having it will contribute to resale value down the road.

I'll let you know how things go, hope your delivery goes smooth.

Can you visualise looking at a map of the US and seeing Florida on the left hand side and California on the right hand side. I would be interested to know if thats how the Nav system works for you. Because thats what the UK looked like on the one I saw. I felt like standing on my head to read it but it makes driving a little awkward.

I love my Nav system. It has a north up feature or a traveling up feature. you push a button to toggle between the two.

I think garyk211 provided your answer Harry. Seems there is a way to reverse it.

I'll let you know what I find once I play with mine.

That makes sense. I should have asked more questions, mind you I would have had to wait nearly three months for my color choice and the Nov system as its a factory fit. Also it cost an extra almost $4,000 over here. So looking forward to Tuesday...........
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
Wow... $4,000??? Is that pounds or USD?
  • harryrogers1harryrogers1 Member Posts: 40
    Tony

Thats in US Dollars. The SE (without nav) costs 48,000 US Dollars, over here. My tow hitch and electrics are going to set me back another 1,250 US dollars.

By the time I look in here tonight you'll be crawling all over your new toy.

    Cheers

I got my RX300 '01 last month, but didn't want to pay the dealer $1,100 for the CD-changer. Does anyone know if I can get a CD-Changer installed elsewhere, and if so could you let me know details. -- Thanks.
  • 00rxguy100rxguy1 Member Posts: 38
I was told by my dealer that you can't get an aftermarket CD changer. You WILL have to buy it from the dealer. If it's any help the so called Lexus Premium Sound System is actually made by Pioneer. Maybe some Pioneer prouducts will fit. Not sure.
  • edgeworthedgeworth Member Posts: 7
I hope that you finally got your new car today. I learned a lot about RX300 from the notes you and others wrote here. I am about to buy one just like the one you were getting (NAV, heated seats, cargo mat, spoiler, wheel lock, roof rack). The best price I could get was $39,475, after visiting four dealers. I am considering following your strategy and trying with priceline.com. Please let me know if everything went well with the priceline route. Thanks. By the way when priceline.com shop around for you, do they let the dealers know the name of the buyer?

hi everyone. i'm in michigan and i'm about to get the AWD rx. i can't get a good deal here so i talked to ray catena in NJ. they did say they would sell $1000 above invoice. the problem is, what is the invoice for the AWD now. a couple people have said that it increased just recently, is that legitimate? furthermore, the invoice price of the car they stated still doesn't match what the invoice is here or any other site. so does anyone know for sure what it is for awd, HID, premium package plus, heated seats, and the wood steering wheel? thanks and i appreciate any feedback.
  • kkuetkkuet Member Posts: 28
perhaps you could really help me. so are there really a lot of HID at ray catena. cause that is my main concern. they have zero with HID in michigan. and what are the options that do come with the ones with HID. i talked to greg mcginnis (i think that is it). and does any one know approximately the cost to ship the car from NJ to MI?
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
Picked up the RX this afternoon at Ray Catena Lexus in NY. Had the black beauty waiting in the service area, all cleaned and ready for inspection. At one point I almost got really excited during the customer orientation phase when the sales guy went "And the memory settings here will adjust the seat and mirrors." I was like "mirrors?" I've researched this vehicle for over a month now, I never heard of this. I thought, maybe they changed it? But alas, I was right, and he was wrong. Apparently all the other Lexuses have mirror memory, thus his confusion.

Everything else went pretty smooth, though I have to compare notes on the "trinkets." Didn't get any! No mug, hat, shirt, etc. Oh well, what do you expect when you are dropping around $40K on a vehicle .

I really can't say how well it performed since I won't push it for the first 1000 miles. But the ride is smooth and the Nav is a blast! We even got a little lost when leaving the dealer, but having the map on the screen got me right back where we needed to be. Lotsa fun!

I've read most of the manuals(!) and a few questions and nit picks:

    1. In other cars I have had, the doors will auto-lock once the car reaches a certain speed, can the RX do this?

    2. I noticed in the manual that a lot of the car "reactions" such as how windows auto-open, locks react, etc. can be changed, but it says contact your dealer. Can't this stuff be programmed by the owner? Many cars allow this.

    3. The so called "in-dash" CD changer isn't in dash, it's in your glove compartment! I knew this going into the purchase, but it still sucks. Makes changing a CD while you are driving impossible.

    4. Do you lose any "system info" if you have the Nav unit? It just seems stuff is "missing" from when I saw the regular LCD systems display in the non-Nav model. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place?

    5. I heard rumors that the Nav can play regular DVD movies? True?

    6. I see a lot of RXs with cell antenaes mounted on the right-side cargo area window. Is this a Lexus install/option? Or just a good spot to do it yourself?

Well, that's all for now. I don't get to drive it right away because I do a lot of parkway driving at constant speeds, not good for the engine I'm told. The wife gets to break it in.

Regarding Priceline, I don't know for sure whether they divulge the customer name, but I think they don't. They bascially fax the requests to dealers in the counties you specify, and collect back the responses. If one or more meets your bid, they let you know which dealers.

    Hope this helps.

P.S. Remember, PL is pretty much a serious process, if they match your bid, you are expected to execute the sale. My advice is bid low, yet reasonable. $600 - 800 over invoice is doable on a RX300 nowadays.
  • tonychrystonychrys Member Posts: 1,310
Yup, Lexus recently raised invoice on a lot of models at the beginning of the year. I've heard the approximate increas on a RX300 AWD is about $300 (between 1 - 2%). I happen to get a model that was on the lot, not in transit, so I got the lower price.

Ray Catena in NJ is the sister dealership to the one I bought at in NY. They seem like a class operation. I also talked to Greg (NJ) while I was shopping around, it just so happen that the NY office came through with the better price. My office is actually 1/4 mile from the NJ dealership, so I'll probably be taking it there for service.

The configuration you are looking for is EXACTLY like what I wanted until I got the good price on the Nav model. This is the way you have to buy it, the formatting will be probably come out screwed:

    Inv MSRP
    C1 Cargo Mat $47 $76
    HH Two-Level Heated Front Seats $352 $440
    HL (HID) Headlamps $412 $515
RF Color Keyed Rear Spoiler $224 $280
VP Premium Package Plus $2,273 $2,525
    WL Wheel Locks $31 $52
WU Wood & Leather Steer Wheel $264 $330

    Invoice MSRP
    Base Price $30,970 $35,655
    Optional Equipment $3,603 $4,218
    Destination Charge $545 $545
    ----------------------------------------
    Total $35,118 $40,418

Okay, now throw about $300 onto the above invoice and let's say it's $35,450. Offer $36,250, if they don't bite try $36,450. I'd make them bite the low bid since you are going to lose $$$ on the shipping, they might feel sympathetic.

I've heard vehicle shipping will cost about $600(?) from Florida to Texas, so I'd use that as a ballpark in your case. I'm sure the dealer has done this before and quote you a more accurate figure.

    Hope this helps,
    TC

    1) no, not on RX
    2) no, requires use of dealer-only programmer
    3) yup
    4-6) don't know

I saw this on the Lexus website:

    "RX 300 Silversport

An enhanced sporty image will contribute to sustaining the presence the RX 300 has established in the luxury SUV segment. The new Silversport embraces a dynamic interior, sport suspension and custom black pearl finish replaces chrome badging.

The 2001 RX 300 Silversport comes in two colors: Black Onyx and Millennium Silver Metallic, both with black interiors. Brushed aluminum trim replaces the wood trim, and perforated leather covers the seats and steering wheel.

In addition, a one-touch open/close moonroof with sunshade and an in-dash six-disc CD autochanger are standard features on the Silversport Edition.

A Euro-tuned Sport Suspension and custom front grille add the final touches to the Silversport Edition. The enhanced suspension offers sporty stability and control with less body roll around curves, while maintaining exceptional ride comfort. With its brushed aluminum, high sport-performance look, the grille rounds out this dynamic new version of the RX 300.

The special edition RX 300 Silversport will go on sale in April. Pricing will be announced at a later date.

Powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine which employs Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), the RX 300 Silversport meets the challenge of the sport enthusiast with quick response and strong pulling power."

I few cosmetic tweaks. You could probably change the suspension/handling yourself if you go to a place like Rod Millen Motorsports, they have a nice wheel/tire package.
