    Gary,

    You are mistaken.

The iPhone & iPad are each capable of GPS navigation. And the iPhone is indeed capable of mobile Hotspot.

I have pretty much made the same decision you have concerning 4G, etc. I have tried Apple a couple of times but I always go back to Windows PC.

My understanding is the iPad does not have builtin GPS. If you get the 3G model with a contract, you get a pseudo GPS. The iPhone is equipped with both GPS and Mobile hotspot. You probably can tell I am not an Apple fan. I do not like being a slave to a single company. You know you are a slave when the term "Jailbreaking" is used in reference to getting Non Apple Apps for your iPhone. Android is a much more open architecture as was IBM compatible computers.

I would like a tablet/notebook that doubles as a stand alone GPS NAV. The only one I know of is the new ASUS Transformer Prime. I won't deny that Apple marketing is slick and their products are slick. Just too slick for me.

Lastly on using any cell phone as a NAV. My understanding is they have to be in range of a cell tower to pinpoint your position. That is not true GPS Navigation to me. Eventually electronics will catch up to my demands. And I will part with some bucks.

I am glad I got the Kindle Fire even though I gave it away. I learned a lot about what I want in such a device. Nothing on the market today will fill that desire. Maybe next week or next year.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
I did a bit more research on using an iPad as a standalone GPS NAV. The most popular NAV App for the iPhone/iPad is MotionX GPS Drive. According to their website to get your maps and directions you have to be connected to the internet, either by cell or wifi. And the Wifi iPad does not have GPS capability. So you have to buy a locked device from a cell carrier.

“Will the application work with a WiFi iPad if it is hooked up to an external GPS device?”

A8. MotionX-GPS Drive HD is a network connected solution that requires a data connection to download maps and routing information before it can provide your route. For that reason MotionX Drive requires a GPS chipset along with a constant network connection. The Wifi iPad does not contain a GPS chipset nor offer a constant network connection without the use of external devices so MotionX Drive HD will not install on it.

Just to be clear... I use a Windows PC. My kids love their MacBook Pros. They want (and are getting) iPhones (4s) for Christmas. But I LOVE my EVO 4G. I think it is one of the best phones ever made and nothing has been released yet that is worth the switch, although Samsung Galaxy 2s Epic 4g Touch is a little faster & thinner, but tends to crash, so I'm keeping my EVO 4g.

The iPad3, however, I will want, unless they skimp on the expected features. And the iPhone5 may also get my attention.

But, so far, I am a Windows / Android guy.

I guess that sums up what I have always felt about Apple. It is for kids. Even back in the 1970s when the Apple II came out, the programs were mostly for kids. The Schools were given special pricing from the get go. Train up a child to love Apple and when they are old they will cling to it.

I was more interested in dBase programming when computers got smaller than filling a room. Atari offered a clone called dBman that I developed a database for our phone company on a 1040ST. Prior it was all paper records with changes done with an eraser and pencil. When Mac first hit the scene I wanted one. But the price, as is today, double or more the competition. And without business software that was compatible with the rest of the World. That is why Microsoft Windows is on 95% of computers today.

That said, my nephew that works for Verizon says your HTC Evo is still one of the best. Samsung does have issues. 4G phones like Thunderbolt use more power. He likes his HTC Droid, not a fan of iPhones. He works on the cell sites all over southern CA.

NO! That's not what I was saying at all. While the streamlined Apple GUI makes for a simpler and more logical user experience, it is natural for kids to like that... but there is a much bigger picture that has evolved.

Originally, Apple products were "different" and they had a cult following. In addition, they were embraced by graphics professionals. But their power to assist creative professionals went much further and over the years we have witnessed the movie industry, professional photographers, as well as the music industry have all been using Apple computers to do much of their best work.

In addition, more typical individuals have made the switch, especially since the iPhone made its appearance. It became all about the apps and the Apple platform became more and more familiar and made more and more sense to a lot more people. Business has begun to embrace it more and more, and the tablet is now becoming threaded into business more and more on a regular basis.

For example it was just announced that iPads will be used in the cockpits of American Airlines! So, we are seeing something waaaayyyy beyond a device for kids. I am totally convinced that Apple's next generation of devices will finally be at the level that will get more folks (like me) to finally make the switch. If the iPad3 is what I expect, I will very lilkely get one. Also, I will consider the iPhone5 if it is what some of the rumors suggest. (larger and enhanced 4" screen, 4G speed, more processing power, more features, with next-generation Siri, and maybe even a new surprise or two.)

Who knows? Maybe I will finally make the entire switch if Windows 8 turns out to be a bust. Windows XP Pro has been great, but it can't last forever. I do indeed like the direction Apple computers have taken, and I have seen what they are capable of with my kids' computers. They can do powerful things with them, especially my son's MacBook Pro, which we acquired recently and configured it with a lot of guts. It's a monster workhorse that can blow away my PC, to be quite honest.

Anyway, I think that's a much more realistic perspective than to say Apple is for kids. Not any more. World-class professionals and major businesses now use Apple computers and products, and in many cases now, Apple represents the benchmark.

I do agree with your perspective and post. You have to remember at 68 years of age, a 40 year old is a kid to me. What we are seeing is a couple generations brought up with Apple in schools. Now they are handing out iPads to elementary students. This is by Apple design. It is slick marketing. And it is catching many in my generation that are not computer savvy. It is a good safe platform for email and websurfing. Along with media development. Which Mac is the best bang for the buck.

Up until this year AutoCad for Mac was archaic. The Mac I set up for a couple about 5 years ago was neat. It was not my cup of tea. I don't like the GUI of the Mac compared to Windows. I suppose if I was not entrenched in setting up Windows networks I may take a different view of Apple. If Windows continues its current downhill slide, I may switch. I have one machine set up with Win7 Pro and hate it. So slow compared to my older machine that I just reloaded with WinXP Pro. And networking with Win7 Premium my wife has and hates is far less than fun.

I am putting my hopes on Android 4.0 for just basic computer fun. Computers have been fun for me since my first DEC PDP in 1971. Not so much anymore.

The iPhone would not even be on my radar screen. For that very reason. The screen is miniscule compared to the competition. Why has Apple stuck with the same 3.5" screen? When my friend excitedly showed me some pictures on his iPhone 4s, I was less than impressed. Older eyes need bigger screens, not smaller.

Jailbreaking is a lot more than getting apps from sources other than the App Store onto a phone or tablet. It is also about doing major customizing to screens and feel and it's also about pirating approved apps. I'm a fiercely opposed to pirating apps - it's the same as pirating software. It's stealing.

BTW, there is a huge following for jailbreaking Android devices as well.

I have an iPhone. My son has an iPad. We have 4 PC's in the house but in the future I wouldn't be suprised if we were to move on to Macs for non-work related computers.

It's amazing that we are in total 100% agreement on this. I also plan to purchase the iPad3 when it becomes available. As far as the iPhone is concerned, my son is sending me his old iPhone to use until the iPhone5 is released. Yes, I decided to wait until the iPhone5. The old iPhone my son is sending is a lot better than my first generation Google Android phone I have been using for several years.

I read that Soros bought a lot of the MF Global assets cheap.

A judge on December 9 approved an additional $2.2 billion transfer to MF Global's U.S. commodities customers, bringing the recovery to 72 percent of accounts.

Thanks for this revealing article. I keep up to date on this fiasco from commoditycustomercoalition.org. This is an organization started by James Koutouls, a young attorney in Chicago that actually hates lawyers. He started a trading fund and his fund became a victim as well. He has done SO much good to bring us to a point now where we will at least get 72% of the money very shortly in a bulk distribution. Eventually, we should receive 100% but we don't know when.

It is easy to just think that these scams that go bad only hurt the rich. When it is someone you care about loses, it becomes personal. We are hoping and praying you are made 100% whole. If you look at the TARP bailout, you have to wonder how many retirement accounts of working middle class people were involved.

Here is a story on housing from CNBC today.

CNBC.com Article: New Foreclosure Wave is Coming

Despite a seasonal slowdown in overall foreclosure activity, and a process still bogged down and backed up by the "robo-signing" processing scandal, the U.S real estate market is about to be hit by another surge of bank repossessions, according to a new report from the online foreclosure sale site RealtyTrac.

My realtor friend told us the other day that foreclosures will peak in 2013. Right now in CA the average default is two years. That means a lot of people living rent/mortgage free for 2 or more years. The banks just pass that along to the Feds and Fannie Mae. That means you and I pay for the shortfall with our taxes. Something wrong with that picture. No one taking a risk but the tax payers.

If you have any stock in companies making flavored cigars better dump it. Seems the Senate has nothing better to do than ban flavored cigars. I had no idea they put flavor in cigars. I do remember cherry flavored pipe tobacco. I wonder if that is high on their priority list in the Senate.

Driving back from the farm today, I started to observe how --in my lifetime--the country around Charleston has changed..
Along the way, many very small dilapidated houses, with `junk yard` front lawns, have given way to factory made neat houses with many fairly new cars parked outside, and predominately lell tended properties.....The customs down here are still intact in the country, with many large families getting together....There are still a few of the old properties, with barely any paint and maybe twenty feet square --under a dark old oak tree.....Miserable looking house, and lots of new cars..and abandoned old ones...

About twenty years or so ago, there was a large surplus of cheese..and if you were lucky enough to know someone in one of those `miserable` houses, and you time the visit right, there was produced some of the `world class` macaroni and cheese casseroles you can imagine.....So no matter how poor, the food was superb :)

Yesterday I was cleaning off the flaps that control the water to the impoundments ...I pulled the first board up and the oysters were growing thick on it.....Down in Miami they charge three dollars and fifty cents an oyster...So instead of taking the hoe and `hoeing` them off, I got my screwdriven and carefully opened them up and ate them..Beautiful day --fulll sun-- and Lousiana Herron and snowy egret, and a King Fisher to keep me company..

It strange to think of all the past that has happened in this neck of the world, but one thing really stands out....`No one really can tell what another person is thinking, and it is difficult to know what you are thinking` so we all somehow get along most of the time....God has a hand in it...

Wishing all a Merry Christmas Tony

I am trying to steer my wife away from the Lexus LX for her next ride...just much too big (and expensive) for her needs. I like the Mercedes GL and the new ML. Also the Acura MDX. What do you think?

The Acura MDX is known for its diehard versatility, but it's got quite a bit of that Honda-type of plastic. My wife's MDX is still going like new, over 100k miles already. Next SUV, could be Mercedes ML or more likely Lexus RX hybrid, or something new, not released yet. We will want something that gets good fuel economy. Southern California driving can drink up a lot of fuel. But for now, that MDX keeps going strong, and she hasn't hinted for a new vehicle yet, which I find shocking, but that suits me just fine. ;)

    Hello TM and everyone else!

As far as stock market investing is concerned, I continue to be focused on AAPL and a few other stocks (IBM for example). AAPL continues to be my biggest investment by far. It has been acting better the past few days and I am very optimistic they will come up with a great earnings report in late January. The iPhone4S has been selling very well from everything I hear while the iPad2 may be slowing down a bit due to people now waiting for the iPad3. The iPhone makes up for at least 50% of Apple's bottom line from what I have heard. Now that Apple's market is really opening up in Asia, South America, and elsewhere, I see no reason why this stock cannot sky-rocket this next year.

As far as MF Global is concerned, as of this morning, only one of the accounts (the smallest) has received 72% of the money. From everything I hear the rest of the accounts will be getting the 72% sometime this week. This has been a nightmare for me as you might imagine, but I do think that my accounts will eventually be made whole. I will be extremely disappointed if some people do not go to jail for this crime.
  • houdini1houdini1 Member Posts: 8,356
Not only should several people go to jail, but many should be stripped of every asset they own just like Madoff was, and Corzine should be the first in line. He probably has enough personal wealth to make everyone whole.

    Looking into real estate.

I think there are some real opportunities there. Last Spring I bought a small bungalow and one of my sons spent the summer and fall rehabbing the place top to bottom. He did an excellent job. It is now on the market and we have our fingers crossed.

I really do not want to close until after the first of the year for tax purposes, but if we can get anywhere close to our asking price it will be one of my best investments ever.

  • tagmantagman Member Posts: 8,441
I totally agree with your outlook for AAPL, but only if the domestic and global political and economic situations do not interfere. There are so many issues that are concurrently afflicting world stability. Any one of them could have a major detrimental effect on the market. With such a high number of problems, I can't help but wonder when one of them will erupt into a full-blown crisis.

IMO, cash is king right now, and real estate might not look better for a very long time. But, you already know that is my opinion, so I wish you luck in the market and hopefully those powerful criminals will return your money, and get the punishment they deserve.

The wife, kids, and I are leaving Thursday for our Christmas visit with the wife's family. It's about 70 degrees here in Malibu today... one of those perfect days... and I will miss Malibu while away, but it will be worth it... I'll get to see my new nephew who was just born a few months ago, and the rest of the gang. And, when I visit the "South", I always eat too much because the food is so damned good, even though a lot of it is fried... and the barbeque is always good, too... one of my weaknesses.

    TM
  • tagmantagman Member Posts: 8,441
Good luck with that bungalow investment. Sounds like your son did a great job fixing it up, and I'll bet you make a killing as a result. Hope you share the spoils with your son... ;)

Also, good luck picking out a new SUV.

Try to keep your weight under control over the next week or so. Since you're living in the "South", I'm sure it's hard to refrain from packing down all that good food, especially around Christmas time. I'll be fairly close by, so if you smell some serious good barbeque, it might very well be me and the gang. :)

Actually, whatever profit we make will go 100% to my son. He got out of the club golf professional business last year because he was starving and wants to get a start in real estate.

This was his idea and he found the property and did all the work. He is trying to help himself and we are glad to help him get jump started. I am just the bank, and thankful to be in a position to help.

Have a great trip and fatten up for the Winter. I am 6-1 and have weighed around 170 pounds since high school, no matter what or how much I eat.

170 lbs! That's damned unfair! I am also 6'1", but haven't been 170 lbs, in over 40 years. I'm built a bit too big to be 170, but would like to hit around 200 - 210 lbs. I'm 220 right now, so not too far off, but enough to consider running on the beach more often instead of eating that tri-tip sandwich I don't need.

I'll be in central Arkansas for a little over a week. So, that's very close to you, but much less chance of any snow, as you already know about the weather in that part of the country. It's a big change of gears for me when I occassionally go to Arkansas from California. The early years were quite a shock! But, the location between Little Rock and Hot Springs is now all developed with many typical national commercial retail stores and chains, so it's actually not as big of a deal as it once was. There are some terrific lakes that offer great fishing and water sports in the summer. I have two properties. One is 38 acres of land that has gotten much more valuable in recent years, due to it's location near a developing area. The other is a lake location. I keep a Mastercraft ski boat, and all the toys there, as well as plenty of fishing gear.

This trip, however, will be with relatives. So, I'll probably watch lots of college sports on TV... now that they have satellite instead of those 4 broadcast stations like it used to be... Lol. ;)

Yes, that's where he says he lives, and based upon his posts over the years, I think there is no doubt. ;)

Just kidding Houdini... you are part of the family here, and I consider you my friend. :)

Since you are a professional meteorologist, Charlie, you know better than most that there is often a significant difference in the weather between Arkansas and Missouri. From what I have witnessed for the last two decades, the "line" (where the weather often differs) seems to be in the northern part of Arkansas, south of the border between Missouri and Arkansas. However, both states share quite a bit of the same miserable weather much of the time, but on the same token they also share some of the same beautiful Spring and Autumn weather... and both states enjoy significantly good-looking Autumn foliage.

There is a saying in Arkansas, that if you don't like the weather, just stick around cause it'll change soon. That's typically very true, and Arkansas' weather can be schizophrenic so much of the time... because its location is caught in the middle of northern weather patterns and southern weather patterns, and that creates dramatic weather so much of the time.

It's been my observation that there are quite a few similarities between the two states (Missouri and Arkansas), but it depends upon which areas are being compared.

I would imagine that Iowa is typically colder in the winter. Frankly, I am not a big fan of cold winter weather, but I must admit that it's incredibly fortunate to be able to go to the mountains here in California for some winter sports and then return to the sunny beach later in the same day!

There is a saying in Arkansas, that if you don't like the weather, just stick around cause it'll change soon.

They actually have this saying in several parts of the nation. In the Boston area we use to say, "if you don't like the Boston weather, just wait a minute". That is not far from the truth especially in the spring. In May, it can be 75 degrees one minute with a land breeze and drop to the low 50s a few minutes later with a strong wind from the ocean.

As a general rule, in the U.S., Asia, etc., here is something to keep in mind. Definitely head south to escape the cold in the winter, but don't go north to escape the heat in the summer. As examples, in the winter, there is a huge difference between let's say northern AR and central MO. There is also a huge difference between central MO and central IA. I think you get the drift. In the summer on the other hand, it is not uncommon to see hotter temperatures at places like Omaha and Des Moines in July and August as opposed to a place like New Orleans.

You are right in my old stomping grounds. When Faubus was governor, Hot Springs was known as Little Las Vegas. Open gambling even though it was against the law, etc.

My wife and I both grew up south of Little Rock. She is from El Dorado and I am from Magnolia. Both towns are almost in Louisiana. I met my future wife and got my undergraduate degree at Southern Ark. Univ.

We lived and worked in Little Rock back in the late 60's and early 70's. It was a big city to us.

Wichita KS was probably the craziest place I've lived weather wise. Huge daily temps swings. Could be 10-20 in the am and 60-70 in the afternoon. Dressing the kids for school often was a challenge.

Then you'd have a few days of near zero temps and snow (blizzard like a few days ago) and the next week it would be 60-70 degrees for a few days (never shoveled much as it would melt in a day).

    Hello everyone!

Well the bad news is that I have yet to receive a dime from the MF Global case. However, we should be getting the 72% soon.

The good news is that I decided to take the step now instead of waiting until next summer. I purchased the iPhone4S yesterday and signed on with AT & T. I said "goodbye" to T Mobile. Additionally my wife's old Motorola phone died and she now also has an iPhone. However, hers is an iPhone3GS. My son sent us this phone. So we decided to sign up for the family plan. It is not cheap though. To get what we needed it will cost about $140 per month. Now I can access websites, get live streaming video, etc. (like the NFL Sunday ticket) with no problem at all.

Btw, I am using the new iPhone to post this message. This phone is awsome especially compared to the G1 that I had. I just started messing around with it and I have a lot to learn about the phone. I have not had much chance to use Siri yet. We drove to St Louis today and I must have used the phone talking to friends for hours. That FaceTime feature on the phone is great.

I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. Don't ratio much this weekend, especially you TM :D

Merry Christmas to you too Charlie... and everyone else here. :)

Congratulations on your iPhone! Christmas morning, both of my kids will discover a new iPhone 4s under the tree... a black one for my son, and a white one for my daughter. I will continue to keep my EVO 4G for now (I am posting this with it, of course), and will love comparing the speed and performance of my phone with the kids new iPhones... may the better phone win!... Lol.

I just read again that Apple may release a 7.85" iPad next year. It's a rumor that continues. I think it makes sense, and I would expect it to be much less powerful than the full-size iPad, which would be a shame. If it was powerful enough, I would prefer the smaller size. But I don't think I would forego buying the iPad3 if it's as nice as I am expecting, and I just read that Apple may try to announce it on Steve Jobs birthday, February 24th... so only about two more months, if this is true.

    Have fun!

Charlie, this may shed some light on your funds.

A spat over control of $600m-$700m in customer funds held by MF Global, the failed US futures broker, has broken out between its trustees and the administrators of its UK subsidiary.

James Giddens, trustee of the US broker, argued on Friday that the funds were segregated for US customers who traded on foreign exchanges and should be returned to them from London, where they are currently being held.

I see that. I went to it from Drudge and no login needed. All these sites want your name and email to send you crap. What is the Internet coming to?

Seems there's more junk in my junk mail folder than ever. Huge pile of garbage, some of which is really pathetic. Guys from Nigeria, pretending to need my bank account information... pharmaceutical sales of all sorts of drugs, especially cialis and viagra... Match-making websites & dating services... domain-hosting services... stores that sell everything from light bulbs to sporting goods... offers from auto dealerships... tickets to shows, concerts, & sporting events... online auction ripoffs... money-making scams... and all sorts of junk that I'm sure you and everyone else experiences. It's ridiculous.
