Why not spend just a little more and you can get the 11" MacBook Air? It's got a much better cover than the iPad 2... an actual real-life protective cover that doesn't disconnect and won't get lost somewhere, and it reveals an actual functional keyboard!
Tag- you are simply looking at this from a rational fundamental (value) approach - sort of the way I looked at oil. But you may well have convinced me to wait things out. That macbook air looks great and so far my sons macbook pro is phenomenal.
Len, I pray that I am very wrong about this, but your comment that you are amazed that there are not 10,000 people dead from the quake will probably come true
I'm starting to get a very bad feeling that 10,000 will be low compared to what we count at the end. The NY Times is reporting many villages wiped out, some with substantial populations. Rikuzentakata, a city of 23,000 was flattened completely. Then there's now 10,000 (up from 9500) unaccounted for from Minamisanriku. Iwate, a coastal town of 23,000 was almost compeletely destroyed and Kensennuna, a city of 74,000 is 33% submerged. These are big numbers and there are many other villages destroyed.
I'm starting to get a very bad feeling that 10,000 will be low compared to what we count at the end.
Yes, Len... at the end, I believe the final count will be staggering beyond imagination. It's why I haven't even posted about the situation up to now. It is one of the most tragic and saddest catastrophies I have witnessed in my lifetime, and it's impossible for me to come up with any words to equal the level of this disaster.
My wife and daughter are in Hawaii, and I am relieved to learn that they were not in harms way from any tsunami activity, although they reported to me that some areas were evacuated and closed down temporarily.
When they return on Tuesday, I will take some time with my wife to pray together and to make donations to help the victims in Japan. It would not be human to turn one's back at a time like this. I'm sure that anything and everything that people can do to help is a good thing, and I encourage everyone to help however they can... no matter how large or small... just do it.

What's the advantage of the iPad's goofy little blanket cover?
My dearest Tag ..., I hate to disagree with you but I do in this case. That cover is indeed magical. I looked at the video and I am overwhelmed (I guess I get easily overwhelmed). Also, I like the fact that the iPad2 is a little more portable than the MacBook Air. Additionally, the battery life on the iPad 2 is almost twice as long as on the MacBook Air. And finally, as far as the physical keyboard is concerned, for me (never learned how to type properly), I actually like the virtual keyboard better than the physical one.
Having said all this, you are probably right, I would not be surprised if I also buy the MacBook Air with the new operating system this summer. I LOVE new technology . Obviously, Apple and Steve Jobs love people like me. This is why AAPL will eventually reach $500 in the not too distant future.
I would not be surprised if I also buy the MacBook Air with the new operating system this summer.
OK, you are confusing me. If you will already have an iPad2 and prefer to NOT have a physical querty keyboad, then what would be your reason for buying a MacBook Air?
BTW, I have yet to thank you enough for letting me know about the Lexus CT the very day it came out. Talk about timing! I love that little car, and I warned you I will thank you often for at least a month.
Tag - A physical keyboard is not the deal breaker obviously. Besides I did not say that I would definitely buy the MacBook air with the new processor this summer. We'll see what the experts (like you ) have to say about it at that time.

It looks like the other Pad makers are upping the anti. The LG G Slate is offering 3D viewing in 1080p. Plus hi rez stereo camera built in for 3D capture. That sounds pretty wild.

There is no doubt that the competition will try all sorts of things to capture a greater percentage of the sales, but the bottom line is that the general public is enamored by the quality and technology of the Apple products since they were first. It will take a long time, if ever, for any other competitor to make a dent in the tablet market.
Forgive the business in me as this may sound wrong or cold and is not meant that way but this earthquake may actually end up jump starting the Japanese economy. Certainly there will now be a lot of Japanese government spending to rebuild, repair and develop even better construction to withstand quakes so we'll also see retrofitting of sound structures. Secondly the Japanese save, save, save frugality may get overcome by the notion of how easily disaster can strike. The Tokyo market has opened down nearly 5% but I bet it bounces back.
The current situation is beyond my abilities. I am out of the market this morning. This is not about timimg the market. And this is not about attempting to predict the market. This is about me... and the fact is that I have no comfort level here because I find myself looking at too many factors to consider... and those factors are unprecedented.
I just can't invest at a time like this. I can't find any comfort in seeking profits by navigating around all the variables surrounding this massive human disaster. It's too complicated for me, and doesn't feel good either.
I'm out... until I can truly grasp the bigger picture.
You are quick and smart! I had already cut back around twenty percent, but not because I anticipated any earthquake or any other natural disaster....Just because I felt like you feel right now..
On my way down to Miami, I sort of sense things aren`t quite as robust as they have been.....Now the air terminal was packed yesterday--I mean really busy--and a lot of activity is going on, but not quite what has been...Doesn`t mean I think things are doing anything materially--just a feeling...Tony
The meltdown at the nuclear power plant Fukushima, could have easily been avoided. It just goes to show you how one bad decsision can overcome meticulous planning everywhere else. The plant had a back up system of generators to kick in and maintain temperature control to avaoid a meltdown in the event of a power failure. The mistake that was made was that switching equipment for the generators and the generators themselves were put in a low lying area of the plant. It seems the Japanese had a lot of faith that barrier walls on the ocean would protect the nuclear power plant from flooding. For all their knowledge of tsunamis the Japanese seemed to not think of a tsunami possibility when designing the plant and deciding on the strategic location of the generators and switching equipment. Naturally the tsunami flooded the floor that held the generators and switching equipment rendering them useless. Had they located them at a higher floor location they would have kicked in and done their job and no meltdown would have occurred. One has to wonder why on earth anyone would put generators that were your back-up system to maintain core temperatures in a low lying area of a nuclear power plant that resides on the ocean. It makes no senses at all especially given the fail safe needs of that power plant.
The mistake that was made was that switching equipment for the generators and the generators themselves were put in a low lying area of the plant. It seems the Japanese had a lot of faith that barrier walls on the ocean would protect the nuclear power plant from flooding.
So far it seems really fun on here and i'm leaning new things about cars that i didnt know. My father also loves cars to! He is actually in the middle of fixing the headlights of my mother's car. I love going for test drives with my dad! i'll keep you guys updated on new cars that i like/dislike.
You know it would be a shame if we put off nuclear power because of a really bad decision that put back up generators in peril. The problem at work in Japan would not be there if they had had the common sense to put the back-up power to maintain core temps on higher ground in the building. Now folks will protest nuclear power for all wrong reasons and worse yet many will probably never even know about the poor placement of the back-up generators.
Look at the bright side. If the nuclear reactors are cooled with damage only to the reactors themselves, it will be a testament to a good 40 year old design. From what I have read they were designed to withstand an earthquake of 8.2. This was at least 5 times that strong. Add the near instant tsunami and it was more than anyone had fathomed. If in a couple weeks no major radiation leaks happen and Japan gets back to the job of rebuilding I think Nuclear power will have passed a pretty tough test.
MIT gives a step by step on the Japanese nuclear disaster.
Was that part of the GE design or their own? I was thinking how GE may be entangled in this mess.
I am impressed with the GE design when I recognize that it has essentially proven itself capable of withstanding a monster quake and even a deadly tsunami... IF some logistically absurd decisions outside of GE's scope hadn't been made. No... unless some information comes to light that points a finger at GE, I just don't think they are the culprit here
The actual company in charge of the reactor is not GE, and it sure appears to be negligent and incompetent. Len pointed out the stupidity of placing the back-up generators and control system in a vulnerable location, and we have since learned that the fuel used in the reactor may not have been the proper fuel, but may very well have been fuel sold by the Russians which came from their disarmed nuclear weapons.
So, instead of burying that nuclear weapons fuel out of the way somewhere, the Russians saw the fuel as an asset, and they decided to sell and make some money... and those in charge of the nuclear reactor saved a little money in the process, by not paying the higher price for the proper fuel. It was an underhanded deal that should have never been made. That nuclear material contains plutonium and/or uranium, and in the event it makes its way into the environment through a nuclear reactor accident, like what is happening now, no one actually knows the specific nature of the consequences... but it is speculated and theorized that the consequences of an accident with that weapons fuel would likely be more serious and more complicated to deal with than consequences of an accident from the more-typical nuclear fuel that is supposed to have been used.
Compromises in the nuclear industry just aren't a very good idea... duh.
But, here we are.
And, now the problem is getting worse and worse, and it appears that there aren't very competent people in charge.
Before it's all over, I totally expect that Japan's nuclear disaster will be worse than anything reported so far.
It all begs the question "What other stupid decisions and mistakes have been made throughout the world's other nuclear power plants that are just waiting for the unfortunate opportunity to present themselves to the world... catostrophically.
It proves one thing... the danger of nuclear power isn't nuclear power... it's people. And since we can't eliminate people... perhaps we should consider alternatives to nuclear power that people can't screw up with such massive and deadly consequences.
Panic and fear is in full control of the markets this morning. TM....Once again you pulled the trigger at the right time. I was thinking of selling all my AAPL yesterday but did not. If I had done so, I would be buying it back much lower this morning. Every market known to man is affected by the nuclear crisis in Japan today. I grossly underestimated the impact it would have on the world markets.
Once again you pulled the trigger at the right time.
I was thinking of selling all my AAPL yesterday but did not. If I had done so, I would be buying it back much lower this morning.
I'm the idiot and you are the genius today!
I'll take a little luck when I can get it.
I bought APPL first thing this morning when it was down over 3%. I will be watching it closely for another opportunity.
BTW, so far AAPL is the single and ONLY stock I am comfortable to purchase at this time.
TM
EDIT: buying some more AAPL again as it dipped some more... first round bought $25K... now buying $50K more... might buy a lot more, depending upon what happens. I don't want to rush in too fast. There's no telling what's going to happen next.
I'm still pounding myself on the head for not pulling the trigger with AAPL on my 2 E-Trade accounts yesterday. I had this feeling that the nuclear crisis in Japan would worsen, but I was presented with a false sense of security since AAPL was trading higher yesterday. I would have been getting out at about $352 or so and buying back this morning at close to $340. That's a lot of $mulla  .

Well... you may get another opportunity (or several) before it's all over. There are many so-called experts that think the stock will have some volatility in the near term.
I sold everything I bought, and took the profits on today's spread. I will attempt to do that again, as the opportunities (if any) present themselves.
TM
EDIT: I just learned that statistically, we are likely to enter into a more volatile stock market, and that (believe it or not) we've actually been in a period of light volatility, from an historic perspective. :surprise:
Sandman... apparently you haven't been paying attention here, but always a good question. The wash rule only applies if you don't buy low and sell high the majority of the time.
My track record is... well, let's just say good enough to throw out the wash rule.
I do not know that much about nuclear reactor safety and recovery but I would have already ordered entombing the all of the rectors in cement on Sunday.
I had a dream that this happened and it is an option. Why do they just keep pumping water when they can end it quickly?
In 1979, a partial core meltdown occurred at the Three Mile island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania.
Peter Bradford, former member of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), said that if the cooling attempts failed, “at that point it’s a Chernobyl-like situation where you start dumping in sand and cement.”
As explosions and fires continue, the time has arrived. Just Do IT.
After buying and then selling AAPL yesterday... I just bought some AAPL this morning... although not as much as yesterday... yet. I want to watch the market for the next step.
If it goes down, I can buy more and average into a nice purchase price. If it goes up, I'll probably stick with it this time.
I told you yesterday that you would get another chance. I sure hope you took advantage. If you did not sell your shares when AAPL rebounded yesterday, then you should hold onto them... but start buying more... incrementaly... right now
I told you yesterday that you would get another chance. I sure hope you took advantage. If you did not sell your shares when AAPL rebounded yesterday, then you should hold onto them... but start buying more... incrementaly... right now
TM - I am getting crushed with AAPL. I bought 10 measly shares yesterday at about $340 with the stock broker account but that's it. I thought the worst was over for AAPL yesterday. Then some dippos come out this morning and downgrade AAPL form "outperform" to "perform". What a bunch of hogwash!
Apple stated yesterday that they will not launch the iPad2 in Japan as scheduled on March 25th out of respect to the Japanese people. Surely, this can't be a reason for the collapse, can it? Apple also said they have no supply problem at all.
I know this is a great buying opportunity, but I don't feel comfortable pouring more money into it right now. I also know that AAPL will go over $400 this year.
I GUARANTEE you that you will be 100% perfectly fine with your AAPL investment. Do NOT get overly irrational.
You are on a great freeway with AAPL, and you have taken an unexpected detour, but you will end up back on that freeway... going to your destination of $400 + /share.
Do not sell out, but be willing to buy some more, and dollar-cost average, if the share prices go down. This reduces your overall cost per share... which means that in the future you will make MORE profits.
Don't forget, opportunities often look ugly, but nonetheless they are opportunities. In fact, it's typical for opportunities to come at moments when the emotions make it difficult to buy.
I didn't buy a ton this morning... as I expect more volatility. But I hope to use that volatility to my advantage.
Analyst Alex Gauna said the computer maker faces risk associated with "notable deceleration" in sales of its primary manufacturing partner, Hon Hai. Gauna said the Japanes firm's sales were slowing prior to the earthquake disruptions in Japan. "We don't know the cause of the Hon Hai deceleration, but possible causes coudl include simply in-line iPhone sales due to more signficiant Android competition, weakness in computing products as tablet demand grows, and/or product risk around the iPad 2," Gauna said in a note to clients. He cut Apple's (AAPL) second-quarter earnings target to $5.10 a share, from $5.49 a share.
I am now buying more AAPL shares. It has just hit a very low price of around $334/share.
I am approaching all of this incrementally, and if it goes lower, and it looks like it very well could do that... I will buy more.
I will ultimately end up with an average price that should be fairly attractive in the long run.
Then, I MUST wait it out after all my purchasing is over. I have set a limit for myself of $100,000 for AAPL stock.
TM
EDIT:
Charlie... I am starting to realize just how glad I am to be out the market (with exception of AAPL). I can't even imagine how much $$green I have already preserved by getting out recently. Wow!
It has really declined more today so far... so I just bought some more. I really want to urge all of you to purchase this stock... incrementally... but definitely start at these low levels. I have no doubt that this company is one of the best companies on the planet, and will deliver a reward to all investors in the future.
I feel a moral obligation to respond.......I know nothing more than anyone else, but when a person is gambling, they need to remember that they can always be wrong, and therefore when the time comes `admit` so and `cut the losses`...
I feel a moral obligation to respond.......I know nothing more than anyone else, but when a person is gambling, they need to remember that they can always be wrong, and therefore when the time comes `admit` so and `cut the losses`...
Thank you Tony for your kind response and concern. We all know this is gambling and this means one can lose big time. Perhaps you got the impression by my words above "I am getting crushed with AAPL" that I am losing big time. Overall, I have made very nice profits with multiple AAPL investments over the past year or two. Even on these two E-Trade accounts that I opened 2-3 months or so ago, I am still ahead. It is just that I was way ahead until the past few days.
Probably more than anyone else here, I know exactly what you mean by admitting you are wrong when the market is proving you wrong. You see, I also have been trading various commodities for many years and one of the most important rules is to limit your losses. If the market is not behaving the way you had expected, get out with small losses so that it does not turn out to be huge losses. Another VERY important rule is to risk money that you can afford to lose. And, I honestly have to say at this point that even if these 2 accounts on E-Trade and the accounts with the broker were to go to $zero, it will not destroy me financially. In other words, it is $money that I can afford to lose. And, obviously these accounts will not even get close to reaching $zero. If they even get close to approaching $zero, then everyone here and everyone on this planet is in a world of hurt as we well all be on the same boat. That would basically mean that the world as we know it has come to an end.
I obviously hate losing in the market and even though what I am losing is some of of the past profits, it is not fun.
You have been so right and done so well, I just had to say what I did, as I don`t want any of my friends to forget the past...
Far a person with a longer term view, these declines---if orderly--present a time to build a position.....When I mention `orderly` I don`t mean a nuclear accident that none of us really know how is going to turn out..
I am reminded of the oil embargo, long ago, and none of my friend or I thought it to be all that important, until it had really begun to take a toll----and I filled up on a dark night well above a dollar a gallon, say from fifty cents---
It may be worse in Japan than they are telling us, and again I am not the scholar to really know how embedded the financial world is with Japan, but I`m not hanging around in the face of a `fierce storm` to find out....I`l figure it out later.....in the mean time the traders win or loose in `short order`...nothing wrong with that....Tony
Far a person with a longer term view, these declines---if orderly--present a time to build a position
Tony,
Well said, and smart.
That's why I bought AAPL today. The ONLY stock I own. How could I resist it? My last purchase today was at $329/share. That's a good price to include in building a position. It might easily go lower, in which case, I would buy more.
It should be very interesting to see how AAPL moves forward over the near term. But for the long-term, I see today as having been a good opportunity.
As always, time will tell.
Overall, I am not going to "gamble" with the market. As you know, I recently got out, thank goodness... and it has already proven to be a VERY good decision.
On the Apple website there is still a 2 per limit on IPAD purchases. Like you said if you're going to have a problem than excess demand is the one you want.
I cashed out 75% of my mutuals effective yesterday so I got some of the bloodbath but missed a lot too. My mutuals are where I have the really large investments.
It's amazing to me that they put their back-up systems and genrerators in a flood prone zone. This doesn't happen if they had put them on a safe floor.
What they did at Chernobyl was pour cement and some brave folks gave up their lives.
You are quick to change your mind and have done so a number of times....The thing is a lot of people stick to their decisions , sometimes to their detriment...
In this case we don`t know what is happening in Japan, as they themselves don`t know....I personally think the nuclear accident may turn out worse than is admitted, and therefore as time goes by the financial impact on a very important trading partner to the U S may deteriorate ...The stock market is at a high level primarily because of the fed....This is how corrections have a way of starting...We may be out of the woods shortly, or it may develop into a prolonged decline..
I also think aapl is one of the finest if not finest companies in a long time, but with no payout, it could be tedious to hold ....Who knows ? certainly not I... That is why I hesitate to voice my opinion , but everyone has come a long way in the last few years, particularly you, so I am only trying to remind everyone from whence we have come, and to` be quick to admit a mistake` and do something about it Tony

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I coulda, shoulda.
Well... you may get another opportunity (or several) before it's all over.
:surprise:

I am doing it again!
If you did not sell your shares when AAPL rebounded yesterday, then you should hold onto them... but start buying more... incrementaly... right now
TM

Your advice is greatly appreciated at times like this. I know that I will be fine in the not too distant future with AAPL.

EDIT:
Charlie... I am starting to realize just how glad I am to be out the market (with exception of AAPL). I can't even imagine how much $$green I have already preserved by getting out recently. Wow!
Personally, I think problems that are associated with meeting a high demand are much better than problems associated with a lack of demand.
TM
It has really declined more today so far... so I just bought some more.
I really want to urge all of you to purchase this stock... incrementally... but definitely start at these low levels. I have no doubt that this company is one of the best companies on the planet, and will deliver a reward to all investors in the future.
All IMHO, of course.

Tony
Tony,
Well said, and smart.
TM
On the Apple website there is still a 2 per limit on IPAD purchases. Like you said if you're going to have a problem than excess demand is the one you want.
I cashed out 75% of my mutuals effective yesterday so I got some of the bloodbath but missed a lot too. My mutuals are where I have the really large investments.

Just for clarity... that was my post... I said that.
Nonethless, the limit isn't a bad thing, IMO. This whole publicity could be creating a sense of something very special about the iPAd2, IMO.
Something almost EXCLUSIVE
