    :D

What surprised me was that Streep was the lead, and I sort of expected the young girl playing her daughter to play that part.
  • jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,296
It was decent. Seemed the producers were more concerned with the 3-D aspects of the movie, rather than the script. Brandon Frazier (sp) was very good. His love interest in the movie was a bit stone faced/flat. My kids really liked it. I'd give it 2 "Jip"stars... as usual, could have been a lot better with minimal effort.

The 3-D effects were brilliant. I didn't get the usual headache from wearing the 3-D glasses. Keep the glasses at $2 a pop.

Yes, it's a 'stoner' movie. But, there are a couple of great car-related scenes.

First is a shot of a Chevette pulling what looks to be a 30' long boat. Just the silliness of that made me laugh.

And, it's probably the first (and only) time that you'll hear one of the characters shout out the name of their car during the movie --- and the car is a Daewoo Lanos! The car actually plays a minor role towards the end of the flick.

There were some good 'laugh out loud' moments, and the plot wasn't too far-fetched. Apatow, Rogen, et al, are really on a roll as of late (40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad, Knocked Up).

Pretty good movie if you like this sort of thing. Certainly, being British, the acting was top notch from the bottom to the top of the cast. It's a thoughtful movie but great costumes and sets (and cars!) and a dark moral dilemma at the heart of it. No happy endings here, this isn't Hollywood.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I hope I like it. I liked 40 YOV and Knocked Up, but Superbad was a bit disappointing (it did have its moments).

I may try that if the wife wants to see it tomorrow.

A swedish vampire movie? Yep, and a really interesting movie it is, too. it's actually a love story! Highly recommended.
  • jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,296
Vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity, coming out of the mouths of 7 year old kids, is... vulgar. The ending was fairly lame. A few laughs. Just 2 "jip"stars.

Yeah, I'd rate it about the same.

There were a lot of clever parts, too. It had lots of potential.

    Poor editing, basically.

Very surprised by Mickey Rourke's performance---he was spectacular. The story was your usual melodrama I suppose (down and out former star, stripper with heart of gold, the ravages of age, blah blah) but the acting was so good here that you absolutely believe you are a fly on the wall watching the character as a real person, not an actor. Powerful performance, Oscar material and then some.
  • jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,296
Man, that movie sucked. I got free tickets and it was still a waste of time. A weak combination of "Home Alone" and the "Diehard" movies... about as funny as a case of hemorrhoids.

And yet, it's been the #1 box office grossing film for two weeks now. :confuse: No comment on the general public's taste in films.

FWIW, when a film is highly advertised, I can determine from the commercials where it will stand with my movie viewing $$.

    1. Must see in a good theater with clean screen and high-quality sound.
    2. Must see in theater, but the corner one will do.
    3. Wait for and rent the DVD
    4. Wait for it to be shown on TV and DVR it.
    5. Not worth the time, even if it is the only thing on TV and I have two broken legs and the remote is on the other side of the room. :shades:
  • jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,296
To me, this movie was a #6. You have been stranded on a small deserted island for 10 years. A generator, can of gas, tv, vcr and a copy of "Paul Blart" washes up on shore... you throw them back in after watching 5 minutes.

In today's paper the movie is rated by 7 major newspapers and magazines across the country. It scored 3 "D"s, 3 "C"s and 1 "B". So, yeah... who knows. But, don't say I didn't warn you. :P

I haven't seen the movie, but "Dog Hotel" had pretty decent reviews. Not much out for kids at the moment.

Yeah, we saw the previews a few times and the kids definitely want to see that.

Monsters vs. Aliens looks so-so, I'll see how hard they push for that one.

Saw this one last weekend and have to say it deserves all the awards it is raking in. Having never been to India, the mass of humanity just in Mumbai is an overwhelming sight. The story is well crafted and the young actors are incredibly good. I'm looking forward to seeing more projects starring Dev Patel.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I liked it, too, but I can't say I loved it. I like small indy-style films but this one got so much hype that I'm not sure it would meet those lofty expectations.

It's a good underdog story and you find yourself rooting for the poor guy.

The one scene where he got the autograph from that celebrity may have gone a bit too far. Blech.

    Chick-flick Alert.

Men: you have to leave your testosterone at the door for this one. I felt like I was the only guy in the whole theatre. OK, maybe one other guy.

It was interesting, and my wife and I both enjoyed it, but with such a good premise and an all-star cast I felt like it could have been even better.

Worst actor goes to Ben Affleck, who really disappoints. He slurs some of his lines and just acts like a pathetic little puppy dog the whole time, not to mention he has zero chemistry with Jennifer Aniston (how is that even possible for a man?).

Meanwhile, the tip of the hat goes to Scarlet Johanssen, who does a great job playing a temptress and just oozes sexuality throughout the movie. Even her emotional scene draws you in. She's a brilliant actress.

See it, but wait for the DVD.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
This movie tries to be the next The Devil Wears Prada but fails miserably.

Even my wife didn't like it. Overacted to the extreme, just very poorly done overall.

    Skip it even on DVD.

It's a shame because the actress stole the show in Wedding Crashers.

    I digress.

For Mother's Day, I was taken to the digital theater to see Star Trek. I was skeptical as the last few Star Trek films have been disappointing. It was fabulous! I particularly loved Zachary Quinto as Spock. I'd venture to say he has a better handle on the character than Nimoy ever did. And Chris Pine as Kirk? Loved him too. I loved all of the young actors. They've opened it up for a whole new prospect of story lines. It will be interesting to see how they weave what we know with the new. This is all assuming that more films will be made. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it and looking forward to more.

Ha!... a true trekkie would never even think such blashphamy. Nimoy was Spock... Spock is Nimoy. BOOO... BOOOO!!! our host! :P

I've heard a lot of good things about this picture and can't wait to go see it.

In a strange twist, our community manager has been replaced by a Kligon-speaking Trekkie who no longer recognizes first officer Spock. It may be a case of Romulan Ale poisoning.

Perhaps I'm not a true Trekkie after all. None of the original stars impressed me as actors. That's why spoofing them and the show was so much fun. :shades:

I saw this last weekend with my wife and 20 year old daughter. Both wife and I, while not die-hard 'Trekkies', watched the original series in reruns when we were kids and knew the history of the characters reasonably well. Daughter is a sci-fi geek with current shows, but knew little about Star Trek.

All 3 of us enjoyed the movie, though I suspect for different reasons. I came away from the movie just blown away by how similar the new actors resembled the original actors - especially Spock and McCoy. The plot was a bit weak at times, but it did serve to bridge the "old" characters to the "new" characters, so in that respect it was successful.

I am hoping this does for the Star Trek franchise what Daniel Craig has done for 007 .. gotten the movies away from the ludicrous and make the series relevant again.

Here's to many more Star Trek films!

Saw this last night, give it about a solid B, maybe a B+ because the wife liked it, too.

The previews make it seem very cliche, but the movie itself is actually not bad. A couple of the actors playing bridesmaids and groomsmen acted very poorly but besides that it was actually well done.

I gotta say, though, Jennifer Garner is not aging too well. I think she lost too much weight for the role.

Matthew M. is OK, but Michael Douglass actually stole the show playing a cheesy 1970s ladies' man.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Skip this one, even on video.

Beyonce needs to keep her day job. Well, that's harsh, she actually had one good scene where she steps up and fights for her man (literally).

The plot is just so outdated and poorly written, as if it were set in the 1980s. Corporations have gone through the whole sensitivity/sexual harassment training thing, and this simply pre-dates all of that stuff.

It was the only movie playing at the time and my wife suggested it, I should have resisted more. I'd have preferred to just get coffee or something.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
No, I didn't take the week off and watch movies all night, I'm just catching up from not having posted anything for a while.

This is the funniest movie I've seen in a while. Zac Effron pulls off playing the awkward teenager, and the Cheez-it scene had me ROTFL.

It's the type of movie that will get critical reviews yet movie crowds will love.

It's too bad it's PG-13 because I could not take my 9 year old daughter. If they could PG-ize this movie I'd take her or at least rent it for her.

Good fish-out-of-water story that teaches you to appreciate what you have.

This sleeper indy-feeling film really surprised us, in a good way.

If you like Steve Zahn and underdog movies in general you'll love this romantic comedy about a nice but unmotivated guy who gradually gets up and goes for the girl.

Jennifer Aniston is good, Woody plays her ex-punk boyfriend and steals more than a few scenes.

    Recommended.
  • Karen_SKaren_S Member Posts: 5,092

There isn't a lot of dialogue, and I usually don't like films like that, but here it serves a purpose and draws you in slowly. Let me know if you like it.

I was disappointed in this movie. Same story line, same characters, same jokes... just in a new location. Not a whole lot of energy from the main characters, most who seemed in need of a good anti-depressant. The Emila Earhart character didn't add much, except a nice looking caboose. Dexter got in a few good slaps on Larry, which despite a repeat from the first movie, was fairly amusing. The last 15 minutes saved it from being a bomb. It rates 2 "Jip"stars. My kids said they liked it, but I didn't hear them laughing any. :surprise:

My kids hated it, but they are adults (or so they claim). They said there were gaping plot holes with no explanation or reasoning.

OAN, they also saw "Up!" and they loved it. My husband and I are going to go the extra miles to see it in 3-D. It's our 35th anniversary. Gotta do something special for it. :shades:

So I got a new BlueRay player and had missed this movie, so I decided it would be a good way to break it in. Boy was it ever.

I'm sure many of you have seen it, not to mention the sequel, but what a pleasant surprise. I loved it.

The last Batman series, for the record, I hated. I thought it was slow moving, even dull at times. So I was glad to hear the series got a fresh start.

What I liked about Batman Begins is that there was a lot of focus on the training he went through and how he went about building the tools of his trade. Alfred was OK (could have been better) but Morgan Freeman (as Lucius Fox) really stole the show. The "read between the lines" dialogue was very well written and he played a better "Q" than James Bond's own Q did.

I'm a techie and so I felt like that's the type of character I would play, so that alone sold me on this movie. The fact that the rest of the movie was pretty good only made it that much better.

Now I finally get to watch the sequel.

Karen: How can you have been married for 35 years, when you don't look a day over 40 yrs old? :)

We have to drive about 25 miles to see movies in IMAX 3-D, but it's usually worth it. One example: Polar Express.. An amazing movie at the IMAX, but thoroughly pedestrian (or worse) in normal viewing.
