What surprised me was that Streep was the lead, and I sort of expected the young girl playing her daughter to play that part.
The 3-D effects were brilliant. I didn't get the usual headache from wearing the 3-D glasses. Keep the glasses at $2 a pop.
First is a shot of a Chevette pulling what looks to be a 30' long boat. Just the silliness of that made me laugh.
And, it's probably the first (and only) time that you'll hear one of the characters shout out the name of their car during the movie --- and the car is a Daewoo Lanos! The car actually plays a minor role towards the end of the flick.
There were some good 'laugh out loud' moments, and the plot wasn't too far-fetched. Apatow, Rogen, et al, are really on a roll as of late (40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad, Knocked Up).
I may try that if the wife wants to see it tomorrow.
There were a lot of clever parts, too. It had lots of potential.
Poor editing, basically.
FWIW, when a film is highly advertised, I can determine from the commercials where it will stand with my movie viewing $$.
1. Must see in a good theater with clean screen and high-quality sound.
2. Must see in theater, but the corner one will do.
3. Wait for and rent the DVD
4. Wait for it to be shown on TV and DVR it.
5. Not worth the time, even if it is the only thing on TV and I have two broken legs and the remote is on the other side of the room. :shades:
In today's paper the movie is rated by 7 major newspapers and magazines across the country. It scored 3 "D"s, 3 "C"s and 1 "B". So, yeah... who knows. But, don't say I didn't warn you. :P
I haven't seen the movie, but "Dog Hotel" had pretty decent reviews. Not much out for kids at the moment.
Monsters vs. Aliens looks so-so, I'll see how hard they push for that one.
It's a good underdog story and you find yourself rooting for the poor guy.
The one scene where he got the autograph from that celebrity may have gone a bit too far. Blech.
Men: you have to leave your testosterone at the door for this one. I felt like I was the only guy in the whole theatre. OK, maybe one other guy.
It was interesting, and my wife and I both enjoyed it, but with such a good premise and an all-star cast I felt like it could have been even better.
Worst actor goes to Ben Affleck, who really disappoints. He slurs some of his lines and just acts like a pathetic little puppy dog the whole time, not to mention he has zero chemistry with Jennifer Aniston (how is that even possible for a man?).
Meanwhile, the tip of the hat goes to Scarlet Johanssen, who does a great job playing a temptress and just oozes sexuality throughout the movie. Even her emotional scene draws you in. She's a brilliant actress.
See it, but wait for the DVD.
Even my wife didn't like it. Overacted to the extreme, just very poorly done overall.
Skip it even on DVD.
It's a shame because the actress stole the show in Wedding Crashers.
I digress.
For Mother's Day, I was taken to the digital theater to see Star Trek. I was skeptical as the last few Star Trek films have been disappointing. It was fabulous! I particularly loved Zachary Quinto as Spock. I'd venture to say he has a better handle on the character than Nimoy ever did. And Chris Pine as Kirk? Loved him too. I loved all of the young actors. They've opened it up for a whole new prospect of story lines. It will be interesting to see how they weave what we know with the new. This is all assuming that more films will be made. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it and looking forward to more.
Ha!... a true trekkie would never even think such blashphamy. Nimoy was Spock... Spock is Nimoy. BOOO... BOOOO!!! our host! :P
I've heard a lot of good things about this picture and can't wait to go see it.
In a strange twist, our community manager has been replaced by a Kligon-speaking Trekkie who no longer recognizes first officer Spock. It may be a case of Romulan Ale poisoning.
fschhhhhhhhhhht (bridge doors close)
:shades:
All 3 of us enjoyed the movie, though I suspect for different reasons. I came away from the movie just blown away by how similar the new actors resembled the original actors - especially Spock and McCoy. The plot was a bit weak at times, but it did serve to bridge the "old" characters to the "new" characters, so in that respect it was successful.
I am hoping this does for the Star Trek franchise what Daniel Craig has done for 007 .. gotten the movies away from the ludicrous and make the series relevant again.
Here's to many more Star Trek films!
Ah, an admission of guilt. Excellent. You shall be sentenced to a life of exile on planet Ceti Alpha V... tell Richardo Montabon his "corinthian leather" stinks. :surprise:

The previews make it seem very cliche, but the movie itself is actually not bad. A couple of the actors playing bridesmaids and groomsmen acted very poorly but besides that it was actually well done.
I gotta say, though, Jennifer Garner is not aging too well. I think she lost too much weight for the role.
Matthew M. is OK, but Michael Douglass actually stole the show playing a cheesy 1970s ladies' man.
Beyonce needs to keep her day job. Well, that's harsh, she actually had one good scene where she steps up and fights for her man (literally).
The plot is just so outdated and poorly written, as if it were set in the 1980s. Corporations have gone through the whole sensitivity/sexual harassment training thing, and this simply pre-dates all of that stuff.
It was the only movie playing at the time and my wife suggested it, I should have resisted more. I'd have preferred to just get coffee or something.
This is the funniest movie I've seen in a while. Zac Effron pulls off playing the awkward teenager, and the Cheez-it scene had me ROTFL.
It's the type of movie that will get critical reviews yet movie crowds will love.
It's too bad it's PG-13 because I could not take my 9 year old daughter. If they could PG-ize this movie I'd take her or at least rent it for her.
Good fish-out-of-water story that teaches you to appreciate what you have.

(yes, this is a friend of mine. I suspect he's already seen it.)

If you like Steve Zahn and underdog movies in general you'll love this romantic comedy about a nice but unmotivated guy who gradually gets up and goes for the girl.
Jennifer Aniston is good, Woody plays her ex-punk boyfriend and steals more than a few scenes.
Recommended.
OAN, they also saw "Up!" and they loved it. My husband and I are going to go the extra miles to see it in 3-D. It's our 35th anniversary. Gotta do something special for it. :shades:
I'm sure many of you have seen it, not to mention the sequel, but what a pleasant surprise. I loved it.
The last Batman series, for the record, I hated. I thought it was slow moving, even dull at times. So I was glad to hear the series got a fresh start.
What I liked about Batman Begins is that there was a lot of focus on the training he went through and how he went about building the tools of his trade. Alfred was OK (could have been better) but Morgan Freeman (as Lucius Fox) really stole the show. The "read between the lines" dialogue was very well written and he played a better "Q" than James Bond's own Q did.
I'm a techie and so I felt like that's the type of character I would play, so that alone sold me on this movie. The fact that the rest of the movie was pretty good only made it that much better.
Now I finally get to watch the sequel.
We have to drive about 25 miles to see movies in IMAX 3-D, but it's usually worth it. One example: Polar Express.. An amazing movie at the IMAX, but thoroughly pedestrian (or worse) in normal viewing.
