    Harry

The reason I bought a VW was probably the same as yours, I liked the car and it was full of promise. Good looking and apparently well made. Little did I know that this was just the promise, turns out the car is pure junk, service sucks and VWoA are a total joke. If I had known this, I would never have purchased the car. The reason I keep posting this on here is to try to help others from making the same mistake. If you have actually made the purchase, then I am sorry you did not heed the warning. If you are still looking then keep looking for a good car, you won't find it here.
My car has had so many problems, that I will just give you a few.
Window fell out, gauges stop working twice, relay overheating twice, ecm replaced, seat belts not working four times, drinks oil, rear struts replaced, inside fan replaced, corroded contacts in electrics twice, ecm reprogrammed, car lurched badly since new and still does, steering rack needs replacing and now the transmission has to also be replaced.
Now if this was your new car, do you think that you would write nice things about it. Look at it this way mine is now a year old, just imagine how long the list will be when it make it to two.

Hola, the car is made in Mexico. What do you expect, even the accord is slipping down hill since it is made in the USA.

I will say that Mercedes has hired the most intelligent folks in Alabama and are doing an outstanding job with their ML. Although their employment of the intelligent folks has caused a huge shortage in other areas, especially govt.

How many of you would recommend leasing a Jetta as opposed to buying one?

I would like to get a Jetta thread started where we could all get some good feelings about the cars we have just purchased or are about to purchase. Sure all cars are going to have problems but since so many Jetta owners are car people and would like to discuss ways of modifying ,playing with, driving and just having fun with our new loves,it would be nice to hear a few nice things. I Suggest that the very name of this Topic (new jetta-often break down) is part of the problem so those who like nothing but the negative stay right here and those who love there Jettas I say lets move on over to the already established topic VW Jetta GLS. You can get there by going to topic search and typing in jetta.
  • bobbybaughbobbybaugh Member Posts: 3
Well that last idea didn't work as that was a frozen topic. So keep on doing the negs and I'LL come back later when I find a place for for Jetta lovers to go. We can still talk about the problems but will also have solutions other than "DON'T BUY A VW".
I say buy, drive and enjoy, I sure am.

Try this topic in our Sedans conference: Volkswagen Jetta - Part 2. It is quite active, and is probably the best place in Town Hall to find Jetta owners discussing their recent purchases.

Since this is the Maintenance and Repair Conference, our Jetta topic is quite naturally focused on issues Jetta owners are having with their vehicles.

    Enjoy your ride!

    Wrong.
My car is made in Germany, in fact the VW's made in Mexico in my opinion are better than the German ones. Personally I think that the Mexicans have more pride in the car than the Germans.
However I would say that given a reliable Honda or my pile of junk it would be a close call.

Hi - bought my Jetta last June. I love it, except I've had to bring it into the shop (4 times now) for the same vibration problem. At around 37-40 mph, the whole front end will vibrate. Then stop at around 42 mph. The vw mechanics cannot fix it. They've replaced many parts. I was wondering if anyone else has had this or similar vibration problems. Please post, would love to know.

    Thanks.

When I bought my 2000 GLS VR6 in November of 99, I checked this site often to read about other owners' experiences. Now that I'm approaching 10k miles, I thought I'd share mine: In short, no problems so far. Great engine, despite the 19 mpg in the city and required premium gas. Slightly rough idle when cold, but not a problem considering the performance it delivers. Only problem is a basically non-functional little ashtray in the rear. The car is bound to have a few problems as the miles mount, as with any car. I had a mid-80's new Celica that totally nickled and dimed (more like $300-500)me to death. So much for the myth of the 100% reliable Toyota. Same with Honda, where friends have had some problems, and Mercedes, where my parents have had some problems. Any machine will break now and then.

So far the car has been fun and reliable. I still like to hand wash it every weekend, and admire its looks all of the time. What more could a car owner ask for?

No way you can top this. I leased my loaded Jetta for 3 years on 1/16/98. It's been to the dealer for repairs at least 20 times. Within a week of leasing, the climate controls on the dash would not light up with the headlights. After 2 months, I noticed the black paint on the hood and roof had a granular texture. VW had to repaint the car twice. During this time (Spring 98) the engine light went on and was turned off by the dealer 5 times until they realized some sort of throttle or O2 sensor was screwed up. Everytime I took the car over 80mph the light would come on. During this time, I called VW in Auburn Hills, Michigan. They could care less about my troubles - until I invoked Lemon Law that is. Then they got on the dealer to fix everything pronto. For the entire first year, the stick would get stuck shifting into first (yes, clutch all the way down). Since then, my fan belt went at 25K. The driver side window rolls up and down as it pleases. The trunk mounted 6 CD changer stops working temporarily when too many other electrical devices are on. Since about 20K, mt tailpipe sputters in the mornings (warm and cold) until the engine hits a stride after about 1-2 minutes. Recently, at 30K, my ignition system went south causing the engine light to come on again - blinking. The coil pack shorted out, causing the #1 ignition wire to fry and fouling the platinum spark plugs $115!!!!!!)The whole thing would have cost me $700 (remember, I'm out of warranty) but the dealer "Good-Willed" the $400 coil pack. How nice of them. I'm turning the car in at 36K - probably around 11/2000. I pray nothing else happens. This car kicks [non-permissible content removed] to drive and is very easy on the eyes. Fit and finish rocks. Too bad it's a damn lemon. No more VW for me. I hope I don't have to go Japanese.
  • jamsjams Member Posts: 1
OK, so I bought mine because my husband LOVES VWs. Mine's a 98 Jetta GLX 5 speed, and most of what you've written, I've experienced. On those window issues, don't even hold out hope - my motors have been replaced now 4 times and counting with no permanent fix in sight.
My biggest issue at this point is not all the little things (and yes, I did spend most of the first year of Jetta ownership not in my own car for the time in was in the shop) that keep going wrong, but the fact that now that the warranty has run out (of course!) the CD changer has simply stopped reading the CDs. When I took it in, it took them 2 days to figure out that they would have to send it back to the factory to replace it - and charge me the full price of the equipment and shipping, etc. That didn't sit real well with me, so I began to look around at repair shops, and of course found out that the Panasonic service people won't touch it because it's installed by the dealer, the shops are the same way, and you can't take apart a VW installed stereo system - you have to replace the whole thing! I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. And of course now I am so insensed by the whole situation I don't really know what to do!
OK, now that you've heard my rant, any suggestions on my CD/stereo woes?
  • jlamb1jlamb1 Member Posts: 2
I don't know what to tell you. I leased my lemon. I'm turning it in 2-3 months early - as soon as I hit 36K. I don't plan on paying a cent to VW - except of course for the disposition fee and the remaining lease payments. I've babied that car as if it were my own. Until then, I plan on using my window as little as possible and my CD player not at all - on the off chance that continued use makes the situation worse. I doubt it though. If you're out of warranty, then I'm pretty sure it's too late to invoke Lemon Law. I invoked at around 5K but never took any action because they fixed everything. I'm an imbecile. On principle, you should not sink anymore money into that car. Either have it detailed and sell it or call a lawyer - if it's worth it to you. My god, there's enough posted on this site alone to raise product liability issues. Remember, whether it's a frisbee or a car, whether it has a stated warranty of 100 years or 100 days, if it's a manufactured good, by law there is an implied warranty of merchantability that guarantees a minimum performance quality. If enough people can show, regardless of the Lemon Law statute of limitations, that Jettas are prone to breaking down despite proper owner care and reasonable use, then the company will have to offer some satisfaction. Think about it, why should the number of miles on a car affect the window motors, CD player, O2 sensor, etc... That's crap.
  • ctbeachgirlctbeachgirl Member Posts: 1
didn't buy another VW. I had a 96 Jetta Trek, oh...my...god...the absolute worse experience. I had major things go wrong, but dealing with the service manager who pats you on the head and practically calls you a liar was the best. One of my fiascos was that my battery blew up as I was turning the ignition. I had the car for one year!

I traded it in this past February because I was afraid of more problems. I was even thinking of buying a Passat, but I was too afraid. Hopefully, my decision of a Nissan Altima GXE will be a good one.

I was bummed that the Jetta didn't work out for me. My sis had her Jetta for 10 years with just maintenace issues. So I thought I was on the right track. You just don't know when you are going to get a lemon.
  • klintonklinton Member Posts: 1
I was seriously considering buying a Jetta this weekend until I read these postings. Thanks for saving me from the headaches. Sure makes me appreciate my reliable ol' Tacoma! Hope you guys get taken care of somehow.

Glad you found some help here, I have yet again been given the run around by VWoA, they are delaying yet again putting my car in for repairs, if they delay me by 400 more miles my car will be out of warranty, and they know it. I think it is time to get rid of this hopless car, the list of problems is growing by the day and I can't afford the repairs, it has cost VWoA thousands so far and still needs a new transmission and steering. At just over a year old, I should not be looking for a new car, but I am. I will be so happy to be rid of this lemon.

    Hi All,

I have a 2000 Jetta GLS TDI. Great car and nothing but good things to say about it. This is my 2nd VW and I've been very happy.

I do have a "ghost" in my car, though. The horn just starts blowing on its own. I took it to the dealer who said that they weren't able to duplicate the problem, so they did nothing. This phantom horn is rather scary when driving along for me and I'm sure for other drivers.

It is most prevailant in 2nd gear on acceleration, but has creeped up at other speeds and gear configurations - even in neutral.

    Any suggestions?

    You have to read this.......

I purchased 2 new cars last year for my 18 and 20 year old sons. They researched and one picked a 1999 Honda Prelude and one chose a 2000 VW Jetta GLS 4cyl 115hp.

I checked the oil level on the Jetta at 3000 miles and it needed 1 quart....the dealer serviced it at 5000 miles.....I added a quart at 7000 miles and 9000 miles....dealer serviced it at 10,000 miles. The Jetta is now low on oil at 12,000 miles and the dealer/factory rep. and I are watching it on a 1,000 mile basis.

It is consuming oil (no leaks) and I suspect the high rpms at 65mph don't help. The car feels like it is mis-geared with too high of rpm's in 5th gear. We have the 4cyl 115hp GLS and at 65mph it sounds as though the engine is trying to come through the hood at 3000rpm's.

We have also had the "normal" check engine light come on that the other 200 posters have mentioned
and a ghost window that goes down when it wants too! The front floor mats also ripped out and one seat belt recall.

VW and the dearlship have been good so far with paying for the repairs...and I am sure that I need a new engine....and I don't want to have a new car with a "factory replaced engine." This will be a big battle! Why are we all fighting these battles with our new cars?

The Honda Prelude has had Zero problems. Go figure.

    Similiar problems....pls. E-mail me or post back......Thanks

    Hi, everyone.

Recently purchased a new GLS VR6. Love the car, depsite averaging 20 mpg for the first 900 miles. Unfortunately, I noticed two different squeeks in the car, and was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem:

    1. When I make a turn at low speeds (under 15 mph), there's a rather loud squeel eminating from the front of the car. It appears to be the suspension, except for it's only caused by the wheels turning, not by bumps in the road.

    2. The sunroof makes a grinding roof when it's being raised. The noise is not as bad when the roof is lowered, and there's no noise associated with the horizontal (opening/closing) motions.

Has anyone had any similar problems???

    Thanks in advance,

    Boris

My 85 jetta with almost 300,000 hasn't given me any headaches for 15 years; I thought a new one would be a no-brainer. I will at least feel armed after reading some of these.
  • yupoldbull3yupoldbull3 Member Posts: 3
Jetta GLS owners would be well advised to read how "big brother" Passat GLS is doing.

Key in under VW Passat GlS "Problems with 99 VW Passat" 503 postings so far. Lots of common issues that it shares with the Jetta.

The Jetta looks good in the yard and moving down the road, but it takes an awful lot of maintenance to keep it going. As I have read.... engine lights and window motors shouldn't keep us hassled all the time.

My dealer service mgr. and VWOA Rep. are currently trying to convince me that adding one quart of oil every 1,000 miles in a new Jetta GLS is normal. I have 12,000 miles on mine now and I burn (no leaks) a quart every 1,000 miles. This is nuts.

I still say that 5th gear is mis-geared in that the rpm's are too high at 65 mph. We have the 115hp. 4cyl and it just works too hard at 50mph and above. It's like 6 big guys pounding with large hammers under the hood!!!! Loud noise.

I only have 12,000 miles and 1 yr. Can't wait until I start having the sunroof track, rack and pinion, CD player, and window motor problems.

So much for the guy that says we should say nice things only or not post here......Nuts

Just keep in mind that this is the Maintenance and Repair Conference - people posting here in any of our topics quite naturally have some sort of issue along those lines.

If someone said "say nice things only or don't post here", that person misunderstood the purpose of this conference.

Town Hall has other conferences where folks are more likely to get a balanced perspective on all vehicles such as Sedans, Coupes, SUVs, Vans, etc. All are accessible using the drop down Conference list on the left side of this page.

The line you are being given by VWoA is exactly the same as my technical manager. They seem to think that a VW drinks oil, and this is not a problem. If I drive highway miles my car uses 2qts per 1000 miles, although this consumption improves to 3/4 qt per 1300 miles for non highway. My car is back in the shop for the 14th time, so yet again I am renting a car, I have no idea when my car will be returned. This time the area technical rep has actually driven the car.
Seems that VW have a problem with automatic cars shifting real bad, but refuse to fix it as they will have to do the same for many more.
I wanted a VW to drive, seems that VW would prefer me drive all the competition instead.
Just read in Car and Driver that VW spent $117 million advertising the Jetta, shame they didn't spend some of that on making it a good car. I think that a satisfied customer is the best salesperson for a car.

In late 1996 I purchased a new 1997 jetta gl and thank god I also bought the 100K mile 5 year warranty for an addl. $750.00 Well I sure got my money's worth from that warranty. Right from the beginning I had wiring problems with the alarm which would set itself when it wanted and sound occasionally also. Up to 30,000 miles no problems with oil burning or sqeeks or windows, just regular maint. which included front brakes. At 50K miles regular repairs with a kicker, new water pump, new starter, new battery, and one cv boot all warranty stuff. At 60K miles timing belt and other belts, expensive but regular maint. at 78K miles, again the water pump and gas gauge went south, they had to replace the whole instrument cluster and automatically resetting the mileage back to zero. At this point I was seriously considering a new 2001 jetta tdi gls since my car averages 30 mpg and with the gl I have no luxury in the car at all, but after all these comments, I am sceptical. thank god for that extended warranty but all the other stuff was just reg. maint. I like the idea of the tdi for the 50mpg issue and the gls offers some nice amenities that I had to do without for past couple of years. Anyway any feedback on the gls tdi would be appreciated. good luck all!!!

238 defects per 100 cars for the Jetta. Can't wait to settle my suit and be rid of my POS.

Was skimping a topic not to far from this one. It's entitled Subary LEGACY :typical high mileage repairs. It seemed that those old cars hold off way way better than new Jettas! I'm ashamed!

    Welcome to Town Hall!

Have you had a chance to visit our Sedans conference yet? That would be the best place to find opinions on the 2001 Jetta TDI GLS.

You can use the Topic Search feature on the left side of this page for Jetta to find all the topics under Sedans that might be helpful to you.

Granted every car company has problems per/thousand cars and I think I have one of those with a (bad) oil burning engine.

Just realised that my chainsaw burns less oil than my 2000 Jetta Gls. Works better too.

    Hi, everyone...
I have just purchased VW Jetta GLS 1.8T.
While I was driving on a Highway I tried the Cruise Control... It worked fine, but I could find any Cruise Control "ON" Indicator on the Instrument Panel.
The Owner's manual says it's located left side in the Tachometer area, but I do see no CC ON light when I use CC. Is it a normal condition?

And, my stereo sys. is the Monsoon Package... I'd like to install a CD Changer. What brand should I buy if I want to install a aftermarket product?

    Can anybody help me?

    Thanks,
  • gregj777gregj777 Member Posts: 67
I don't know about the cd changer, but the cruise control light is not there. If you look in the manual you will see some illustrations that do show it and others that don't. I haven't seen anyone here or on VWVortex that does have one. I can't remember why, but I think North American models don't have it.
  • trancebugtrancebug Member Posts: 3
    Thanks for the reply..

It's funny that there's no CC Light on the Inst. Panel.... Hmm...

At least, my car is normal...

Yes, the manual says CC light is on left side in Tacho Area..., but no light on my Panel.

If anybody has CC light on the panel, let me know...

About CD Changer, so should I get it from a dealer? It seems to be overpriced...
  • gregj777gregj777 Member Posts: 67
It IS overpriced. The Monsoon system is great but you can get aftermarket a lot cheaper. Mine already had it on there so it was a moot point. I would be weary about installing one however, as I've read posts about people putting in aftermarket audio and then screwing up the electrical system. In one case I remember reading where a guy went in to have the car serviced and VW refused to service it until he removed the aftermarket radio because they were afraid it would fry their electronic diagnostic equipment. I plan on keeping the stock Monsoon. I'm not that big of an audiophile.
  • gregj777gregj777 Member Posts: 67
I forgot to mention, you can find out a lot of audio info about this car at the Vortex, http://www.vwvortex.com

Click on "forums" then scroll down to Car Audio. You'll probably get a good idea of what will and won't work there. It's pretty extensive.
  • bgrotbgrot Member Posts: 2
There's no CC light on the instrument panel. It was something that VW considered putting in (supposedly they tested the cars with it), but when it came down to manufacturing, they dropped it. This is well documented at http://www.vwvortex.com

I interested in buying a new Jetta - however, after reading the posts about the new Jettas, I'm considering other options. I'm also interested in the new Golfs. Do these have the same types of problems that the Jetta is having? Are they manufactured and assembled in the same country? Advise please...

Actually, the best place in Town Hall for you to seek buying advice on these two vehicles would be our Sedans conference.

I have my '99 GLS VR6 for over 1 year now and has almost 19000mi
on it. I think I am using it too much as evidenced by its mileage.
My concern is that it seems that its about to break down once
my warranty runs out. I hear squeaks and engine noise that I've never heard
before. As I noticed from posts here, the cost of maintaining is too much.
The nearest dealership is about 2 mi from home, but its a pain to get an
appointment with them. Always backed-up and never have time for emergency
appointments. More so that I have taken the car several times already
for unscheduled maintenance - when the engine malfunction
light stayed on, another when they replaced the water pump motor as the temperature gauge lighted up. ( They eventually replaced some chip for the engine light to function properly ). To have these replaced under warranty is OK, but what if it breaks down after 24000mi or 2yrs? Come to think of it, the car is still 1 yr young and have these problems already. remember ( when I was younger, living outside US) that VW cars are being laughed at because of the way they look and having poor performance, now I realised that there is a reason for it. That in mind, I think I'll give up on this car once I have decided what to get next.

i have a 2k jetta gl 5-speed (2.0), does anyone know if i can add cruise control, how much $, and who should do the work, the dealer? Oh by the way I have 2000 + miles and so far no problems , Ilove the car and it is not nearly as boring as the 89 honda dx i drove for 11 years

to express my sympathy for all the Jetta owners out there with the problems that have been pointed out in this thread.

and I don't go for the disclaimers of some the above posts that, hey, ALL manufacturers make SOME lemons.

NOT ALL manufacturers MAKE SOME lemons.

Honda and Toyota ARE NOT in the lemonade business.

If one looks at the corresponding Honda thread, it's obvious that Honda quality is declining.
There are some complaints about tranny problems and engines leaking oil.

But the difference is that HONDA does RIGHT by their customers. If the car is a true lemon (VERY RARE), it's quickly taken off the customer's hands.

    It's a matter of objectives.

Honda still has customer satisfaction as its number one priority.

I was thinking about buying a Jetta for the same reasons others have mentioned (tired of boring cars), but after reading this thread, probably not.

If one wants to gamble, there's Vegas.

hondobond, you sound bored with the [non-permissible content removed] cars, but afraid to take the leap. so was I ,but after driving, reading, pricing and the whole nine yards i convinced myself to go w/ jetta. ibought 2000 gl over the fancier jettas mostly because of price. you get a 10 yr 100.000 mi powertrain warranty. didnt get the turbo diesel because the turbo warranty is over in 2/24k. on the gas turbo the turbo is coveredfor 10/100k ,, go figure.
any way the car has been great for the 6 weeks i have had it. it looks and drives better than anything honda has for $16000.

Hi, folks! I currently have jetta gl for 4 yrs. Only problem was ignition switch which recently went out. When they fixed they messed up hazard lights and when you put the hi beams on at night the headlights go out completely! Is this typical of VW service? My lease is up and was considering new jetta glx or honda accord ex-v6. Honda cheaper but jetta more fun to drive. Is glx worth it?
  • itazukeitazuke Member Posts: 3
...and still performing flawlessly. Zero adjustments, zero fixes. 6 mo/5000 mile service performed last Thursday while I waited. Nothing to report. I love this car. Have automatic and in-dash CD. The single problem I've noticed is that when I switch the engine off with the CD playing and then restart the car later, I occasionally have to turn the player off and on again to get it restarted. Usually it resumes playing at the point where it was turned off at but not always.

I traded an '84 Honda Accord I'd driven since new and test drove the new Accord EX before deciding on the Jetta. Slightly smaller but more goodies and more excitement for the buck! Truly a compact luxury/sport sedan. If you don't care about size or the lowest price and really want a quality car that's lots of fun to drive and comfortable too, take a drive in a Jetta before making up your mind. The test drive it for me.

Well, this whole topic is devoted to Jetta problems, have you looked through the posts here? If you didn't see the links, check under the topic title for the "scroll up 20 responses" and "jump to" features.

Is this a Jetta you are thinking of purchasing? You might want to look through our Smart Shopper Conference - that's one place where folks go around here to get purchase advice. You could also check out the Jetta topics in our Sedans conference.

Or have you already made the purchase? If so, are you having a problem?

This conference deals with maintenance and repair issues for already purchased vehicles, so if you are having those sorts of issues, perhaps we could help.

If you want to look for other topics in our other conferences, the easiest way to do this is to key Jetta into the Topic Search feature on the left side of this page.

    Good luck.

sorry i was so generic in my inquiry. i have recently purchased this car and 3 days later the check engine light came on. the dealer told us if it did not to worry unless it was blinking. they said it could be any number of things (i.e. gas cap not on tight( we haven't had to put gas in it yet)) my husband is pretty worried, we'll be taken it to the dealership on his next day off. i was just wondering if any other 99 owners experienced any problems worth noting (the same or otherwise). Like i said before the preliminary carfax report came back marked "lemon". any lemon owners out there. we're wondering if we made a mistake.

I have owned many cars, not any vw's because of the horror stories I have been told. As for the check engine light it might be 1 of 200 things wrong with your car. Some mild to extreme repair but I have never heard of someone saying if it doesnt blink dont worry. Get it looked at. All the cars Ive worked on that the check engine was on have never blinked and some had costly repairs. It is also a matter if the light is continous or comes on after warming up.And be sure that the problem is found because they can erase the code, not do anything to your car and the light will come on in another 100 miles. Also when they fix the problem and get the check engine light turned off check by turning the key to on position not starting to see the check engine light works, dealers have been know to remove the check engine light bulb on problimatic cars. You said it is a lemon, the sales man might be shrugging of your complaints till his commision check goes threw before you complain.

If you are after an automatic car then u might be better of with the v6 accord. since it has 200hp vs. a 175hp GLX Jetta. I think the V6 Accord only comes with automatic. However if you wnt manual then GLX is your only choice b/t those 2.
