but for real-world USA driving, 6 gears in a huge-block engine is a waste, unless you just like to row the gear box. For all intents and purposes there's no real advantage to having all those gears with an engine that size.

Now maybe if you live in Germany, where those 6-gears could be put to real use... That's different story.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Anything that goes over 75mph is theoretically a waste int he US, since that is about the max speed in nearly all states. Does it stop us from making cars that do 155mph? Nope. :)
Welcome to the land of excess!

And excess is something I've never dealt with well. I've always preferred small engines—that could use 6 gears, as opposed to large engines—where 6 gears is pretty much a waste.

I agree. Give us better trannies first, before looking to bigger engines.

As I said before - give me a well engineered 4 cyl over an 8 cyl hog. Less oil, gas, coolant, tune up cost, better handling, more room in bay, and easier to wax... ;>)

    Greg
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Hmm I dunno about he oil and tune-up costs, nor the handling. I have had some v8s that only took like 4 or 5 quarts of oil, and 4 bangers that take the full 5. Tune-ups have been about the same for all of em, epecially now since it's just plugs to replace.

  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Sorry Mike but I'm gonna hafta agree with Greg on this one. Generally speaking, an 8-cyl consumes more of everything.

    -Frank P.
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
I'll give you plugs. On average, most 6 & 8 cyl use 5 qts, most 4s use 4 qts. Maybe not a big deal - but environnmentally 1 qt x ?? million vehicles (Another reason I like synthetic). As for handling - I am not AJ Foyt - but less mass equals greater ability to change directions.

I really have no idea, so please take this as an honest question: does synthetic oil really do good things for the environment? I'm talking about looking at the macro level. How is it made? What is composed of? How is it disposed of after it is drained? How does that total impact compare to the impact of petroleum oil?

Okay, I do have a *little bit* of an axe to grind by asking. All too many times people take very simple values and use them to decide that item X is more environmentally friendly than item Y. Even Consumer Reports does this, and its one of the reasons I stopped reading it. Let's take synthetic oil for example. If it needs to be changed half as often as petroleum oil, well then it must be twice as good for the environment, right? Whoa, wait a minute. What if the manufacturing process is filled with nasty chemicals and the stuff never decomposes and can't be recycled for any other uses? I'm not saying that's the case, I'm asking because I don't know if it is.

Another that gets my goat is pure electric cars. No gas - zero emissions, right? Bzzt! That energy has to come from somewhere. Where does the electricity come from? How much does that impact the environment as opposed to just letting the car burn gas? And so on.

    Cheers,
    -wdb
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
I guess I've always wondered that myself. Don't forget about the cost. That's gotta factor in too.

Zero emissions? Sure, for the electric car itself maybe. But, the energy came from coal or natural gas or ? from the electric company. So, it's the electric company that has the emissions from creating the power.

Electric supply is a problem too - at least in California. There's plenty of gas/oil to use, even if it doesn't come from the Middle East.

  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
OK, zero emission = added emission from electric co. in fixed location to meet added demand = no change to quality of air (swept under rug - polute somewhere else).
In addition, we would also have to content with the disposition of retired batteries ("save" the air taint the soil).
And... electric cars uses motor oil.
My perspective, we added another problem.
Funny how we love to dig two more holes to cover an earlier one we dugged.
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
That's the good thing about hybrids. They are extremely efficient and you don't have to recharge them.

Fuel cell technology looks to be very promising too. Although, examining them from wdb's macro perspective, what's involved with making fuel cells and what is the recycle potential?

Whoa, just realized what topic this is. How'd we get so off track? So, does anyone have a car-buying question?

    -Frank P.
  • francophilefrancophile Member Posts: 667
What's the total environmental impact of buying a hybrid car and driving it 50,000 miles, compared to a straight gas-burner? :-) There, back on topic.

    Cheers,
    -wdb
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
hit a hot topic. Maybe start a new topic on environmental impact of synthetic. Probably being discussed in the synthetic oil board. I'll check. Overall, I agree completely with the fact that pulling the wool over people's eyes is easily done (or people just don't care, i.e. popularity of SUV's)

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
WDB: I agree and think we should not call them ZEVs, but REVs instead (Remote Emission Vehicles). They've already bombed badly in the market, while hybrids thrive.

Subaru will rely on GM for this technology.

Bought mine about 10 days ago from Schaumburg Subaru (Chicago suburbs. on Golf west of Higgins) with auto, CD, Security system upgrade, tweeter kit and auto-dimming mirror/compass, wintergreen color. Paid within few dollars of Edmunds TMV. No pressure, they did not try to sell any add-ons. Salesman brought out invoice. But they include $150 regional advertising fee which I think is legitimate. Also got special financing which isn't that low but a little lower than bank rates (6.5% for 60 mo).
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Congrats, Viktoria. I remember reading that the average rate in the my area was 7.9%, so you did get a nice break on the financing.

My dad also has a 2002, but it's a Limited. Very nice, congrats again.

  • viktoria_rviktoria_r Member Posts: 103
they did not have too many 2002's. and since they are the same (give or take a few color options), i did not see reason to buy 2002 over 2001. they had green llbean, offered at $28,022 (invoice is 27,700 i beleive), but the payments would have been too much :(.
overall, i am pleasantly surprized with how smooth this car is.
regarding rates, i remember checking rates on peoplefirst.com. i think theirs was 6.99% for a new car with good credit and if you set up automatic payment option.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Cool. My dad laughed when I mentioned an H6 was on the way - he thought the H4 was more than adequate.

Now it's my little sister's turn to buy a car. Time to talk her into a Legacy L...

Juice, I thought your dad had a 2000 not a 2002 Ltd. Did I miss something?

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Let me think about this - he bought it last year, so actually it's a 2001. I did show him a 2000 model, but he decided to wait and get the bigger brakes on the 2001.

What am I thinking? The 2002s aren't even out yet!

Do you have any info on shipments to the northeast? I ordered my car on 4/28.

Last week I was told it'd be in this week. This week I was told "it's on a truck somewhere, you should have it by next week." No VINs until the car pulls into their lot.

I'm hoping they are being honest, but I have no idea.

They should have a vin for you as soon as the car leaves the dock/wharehouse.

If you can join the Subaru VIP Partners Program, through one of their marketing affiliates (the Rainbow Visa Card, Travelers Insurance, various Subaru suppliers, etc.) the dealer must sell the car at invoice or below. You can even negotiate the holdback. Call SOA at 1-800-VIP-0933 for details. I just had a "no pressure" experience today buying my 2002 Forester.
Mine has the sport grille which I think improves the front end appearance 100%. It might not be available for very long since they have dropped any reference to it from their literature.
  • armac13armac13 Member Posts: 1,129
may all be heading to Canada. The new Forester "Sport" features the sports grille among other things. :~) I hope and expect that you'll like your Forester as much as I like my Rufus.

don't seem to be very popular here. I've seen a few, but not many. They remind me of an Infiniti grille, not a Subaru grille.

    Folks,

I bought a 2001 Forester S last December, before knowing about the impending WRX release, and now I am hating life... it's a fine car, but it's still a bit... boxy.

Anybody have any experience with Mastro Subaru in Tampa? I'm north of Orlando, but after the WRETCHED experience I had at Bill Bryan Subaru in Winter Park, I'll never return there. I've heard that Mastro has a good customer relations policy. If you HAVE bought a WRX there, what was the "deal" they offered?

Anyone have any information on this new model offerd by SubaruCanada? It is not on their website yet.
Interesting that Canadian Foresters are different than US models... interior in gray only, no beige.
Leather standard on the S Premium ("Limited" in Canada)!
  • armac13armac13 Member Posts: 1,129
I posted the Forester Sport specs a week or two ago. In addition to all of the standard Canadian S features, the Sport gets "mesh-style alloy wheels and a sport design grille, a sporty premium cloth interior in black, a large glass moon roof, rear roof spoiler, and auto-dimming compass mirror." It's also monotone - black, red, silver. I don't have a price, just quoting Six Star Review, the Canadian equivalent of "Drive".

all Canadian cars get kilometers on their speedos, as opposed to miles, as the featured type.

    Perrito --

Although I live in Jacksonville, I'm originally from the Tampa Bay area and have heard good things about Mastro & they're customer service so I'd definitely give them a try. I think they're also one of the biggest subie dealers in the State as well. Sorry to hear about your experience w/Bill Bryan -- I wasn't impressed with their dealership in Sanford either.

I bought my '01 OB Automatic from Subaru of Jax. last fall & had a pretty positive buying experience with them. Matter of fact, I had them in a bidding war with the Subie dealership in Valdosta, GA who was so desperate for my business that both the salesman AND the owner called me back after I inked the deal with SOJAX just to see why I decided to purchase my car where I did. (I had a very pregnant wife at the time & didn't want to travel that far if I could help it).

Since the sale, the customer service I've received from Anthony & Kay in the service dept. at SOJAX has been outstanding which makes me breathe easier, especially since they're the only subie dealership in NE Florida. BTW, I'd avoid Hawes Subaru in Gainesville -- when I called for a quote, the guy on the other end of the phone had an attitude like I was interrupting his lunch or something and didn't seem very knowledgable about options, etc. Also, Hawes is primarily a Chrysler dealership rather than a Subaru-only shop(as SOJAX is), so I'd be suspect of not only their sales staff's knowledge of the product, but the service crew's as well.

Hope this helps & good luck with the WRX hunt.

    Perrito,

I know a guy that lives just north of Manhattan that bought a WRX from Mastro.

    http://mastrowrx.com/andy.html

He lived in Tampa for a while and drove from NY to Tampa and back to trade in his RS and get the Rex. AFAIK, he paid MSRP but got his WRX at Mastro because they are one of only a few Prodrive distributors in the US and he has a long relationship with them.

You could probably find more info on Mastro on the i-club's Southeast Forum at http://i-club.com

Sorry it took so long to respond. I've been on vacation. Your dealer should be able to look up your vehicle on their computer to give you an ETA. If they advise you that they cannot do this, call us at 1-800-SUBARU3. We can step them through the process and see if we can get the information for you.

    Dennis,

Thanks for the input on the dealers nearby central Florida. BTW Stephen, the one in Sanford is actually Bob Dance, and they're mostly Dodge as well... haven't really dealt with them in the past.

Still mulling over the WRX purchase... maybe a house would be a better idea first!
    Thanks again... and enjoy!

    perrito

p.s. My cousin in Denver is getting into the "tuner" industry for Subaru/VW/Audi and will be marketing some goodies in the next few months. I'll post more on it later.... when the products are actually available. He's using his 2002 Silver sedan WRX as a "test" model for all Subaru products.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Let him know that if he wants to test a supercharger on a Forester, I'll unselfishly "volunteer" myself as a guinea pig.

I just put the money down to reserve a car that should be hear around jul 25. The orig offer was 21.5K for the forester L auto with keyless and the armrest. I told them 20.5K and they did the "that is below invoice" hoopla. I stuck to it and he came back with $20,619 and that is 300 over invoice. I didn't know what invoice was on the options and only thought of them while on the ride over so I took the offer. They brought out the list and Highlighted / Highlit??? one of the two blues off the list for me and I will get the first one in. I am looking foward to my new sube.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Edmunds lists prices. Click on New above, then Subaru, then your model. Under Options and Colors you can find prices for accessories.

    $300 over sounds fair, though.

Bob - time to check out a 2002 in person.

Anybody deal/dealt with them recently or in the recent past? Anybody, more importantly, deal with them for a WRX purchase?
    thanks, perrito
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
I recall them being mentioned before (wish there was a practical search function).
A colleague is in the market for a new car and I kinda swayed her to check out Subaru (the VIP Program had more influence), confident that she would buy one. This would be her first new car purchase and experience with Subaru. Anyway, SoA referred her to Liberty Subaru and I would like some feedback so I could pass it on - want to ensure she has a good experience.
What are your experience with them?
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
They're known to be a great dealership and have great service. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend them because one of there salesmen was posting a lot of immature remarks on the i-club when the WRX came out (remember that paisan?). I really thought he was a kid with what he was posting.

I had sent an email to the owner of Flemington asking for special internet pricing on the WRX. They starting selling it for $600 over invoice. This put the salesperson at Liberty in a fit. He started posting replies to my posts. Things like "yeah, great price but no cars in stock. Lol!" Another i-clubber that went there was treated pretty poorly. There's a lot more to add but I won't take up space here. I ended up complaining to some higher ups and coincidentally it stopped.

Like I said, they're supposed to be great but there are indeed some bad apples there. Let me know if they would consider Flemington and I'll steer them in the right direction. A good no hassle price at a no hassle dealer. I'm within 20 minutes of Bell, Hillside, Somerset and probably S.I. Subaru. Flemington is a 35 min drive but are the best that I've found.

    Dennis
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
What Blue said in a nutshell. If you are buying a car and live in NJ, go for Flemington, if you are in Northern, NJ head over to SI Subaru (make sure you ask for Mark) and for service use Flemington, even if you have to drive there from NYC! I remember that immature guy from Liberty on the I-club all too well!

    -mike
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
for the heads-up. I'll see if I could have the designated Dealership changed. Looks like SI Subaru could be a go unless she doesn't mind travelling down 50mi to Flemington - she lives in Fort Lee, NJ.

    Again, thanks guys

    hypov:

I recommend that your friend check out Bill Kolb Jr. Subaru in Orangeburg, NY just over the NJ border near Palisades Parkway Exit 5. I've been very satisfied with them and they have service loaners.
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
I think a service loaner will come in handy for her. That's an option she could use when servicing the car.
    Thanks
  • rgarbacciorgarbaccio Member Posts: 42
According to yellow pages (distance from my house):

    A&T in Sellersville 8 miles
Fred Beans in Doylestown 9 miles
    Glanzmann in Jenkintown 13 miles
Eger in King of Prussia 13 miles

I've read the about 400 posts so far and have heard some good things about Beans and Becker up in Allentown (a bit far for servicing).

    Any advice? Recommendations?

Thanks....probably in the market for a 2000 Legacy or 2001 OBS
