What do y'all think a good price for an Outback VDC would be right now? also, I kno Subaru sells extended warranties and service plans--good idea or not? I plan on keeping hte car ~6 years

Go to fitzmall.com for their pricing. Their prices are going to be as good as any where in the country. Pricing is very sensitive to competition in your area. Chicago has about the same pricing as fitz. California seems to be more expensive. In my area of Ohio its much more expensive then fitz prices.

Finally, after 12 months of research and the financial guidance of a patient wife, we are ready to purchase a 2002 Impreza TS. Has everything we need without going over-board, plus the security of AWD (after last winter up here in the Great White North, a God-send!)and a cool ride and look! We are curious if anybody knows of any Canadian incentives on this vehicle, heard of anyone getting a great deal, and/or knows dealer invoice or how to obtain dealer invoice??

Any help is greatly appreciated, and the faster the better! Got ants in my pants and I need to buy SOON!! Thanks.

Also, have any of you heard of the prefered Subie dealer in Ontario, Canada - in other words, a good, honest dealer with great stock?? What about an aftermarket parts dealer in Port Huron, MI, USA??

    !

I agree - check fitzmall.com for a good indication. Their prices include freight.

Any friends north of the border help us out? Some of the subscriptions are not working, so people may not even realize the question was asked.

    Well......

The trade killed the deal. I had my truck trade in value in the NADA October 1 guide at 10,500.
I posted a message in the Real World Trade Value thread here at Edmunds and they estimated the truck at 10,000ish. Williams wanted to give me 6,800.00 and was not interested in moving up at all! So needless to say the deal fell through right there due to the lowball trade. So the hunt is still on!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I have a suggestion. Try selling your truck to Car Max. They'll buy yours even if you don't your new one there.

    -juice
  • wmiller4wmiller4 Member Posts: 97
I have thought of that but, the closest one to me is in Tinley Park Illinois.
About 4- 5 hours from here. Hard part would be get
there and not get a good offer at all. Wasted 1 day and all those extra miles.
The thing that kills me is that KBB has the truck around 9,000.00.
I understand that is what Car Max uses to figure trade in/whole sale value with.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Private sale then, I guess. It's a pain but that's how you get the most for it.

The state of MD requires an inspection, but that actually helps you sell the car.

I know of at least 3 people who got 2-3K more from carmax than the dealers would give him.

Both got the KBB value from Car-Max and their cars were far from perfect.

In Miami, Edmunds and KBB trade-in value is approx $2500 wrong. CarMax appraised my trade $450 more than the dealer, but I would have saved more than that in taxes trading it in. Anyhow, decided to keep the trade. Unfortunate that Miami has only one choice in Subaru dealers. Ft Lauderdale is no better. Wish I could have a Van Bortel experience!

I am getting ready to make the purchase. I have MBNA Subaru Program points to turn in and I notice I have one of the old ones that can only be used to purchase/lease a car. No problem there. I also see there is a form that needs to be filled out for the older Subaru Points Certificate by the dealer. The instructions indicate that form is available on the dealer's web site subarunet.com. I would like to know if that form is still required? I would also like to know if there is somewhere I can get a copy of the form to take to the dealership to headoff any possible delays. Any ideas anyone?
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
William - only the dealer could login to obtain that form, and they fill in it up. IIRC you just sign at the dotted line. Not to worry 'bout delay, it's filled up there and then at time of purchase - no big deal or delay.
    So, which you buying?

I just drove home a 2002 Granite Black LL Bean. 4% over invoice.

Options are Spoiler, Acrylic Hood Deflector, Cargo Net. Rear Gate Bar is on
hold until , according to the dealership, the "out of specs" problem on them is
solved. The bolts on the unit are supposed to be to long. Any one else hear
of a problem with rear gate bars? Patti?

Had to do a dealer trade and I was not too happy about that. I see way too many
cars with dealer plates and stickers in the window whiz by on the highway while I
am doing 70. I guess I will have to take extra special care of the Bean .

Only problems I have found so far, the glove box light is not working and a very fine
scratch right by the front sun roof on the passenger side. Did not see those when
    I was at the dealership.

Thank you to everyone on this board. The knowledge base here is incredible! Juice I tried
to change my profile but, there is nothing in the drop down menus for the car that you own selections.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I think that the glove box light is like my Trooper one. It only comes on when you have the parking or driving lights on. Same with the mirror lights IIRC. Check it out and see.

Paisan you were right! Thanks for the tip.

The fine scratch is not a scratch. It's a line of
adhesive from the white plastic they put on the
cars to protect them while in transport. A little
over site in the dealer prep but I think I can handle it.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
WD40 will take care of it, just wash the area afterwards.

That ought to get her looking perfect. :-)

What's your take on this. I've got less than 1K on our LLBean. The engine is incredibly smooth and quiet. However,I feel vibration in the floor through my feet and legs. The steering wheel doesn't vibrate abnormally and I don't really feel much in the seat. It seems to be more pronounced at highway speeds. There isn't any vibration if I stop and just rev the engine. I had the tires balanced at a tire shop with new equipment. The front tires needed some balancing, but it didn't change the vibration. The tires are inflated to specs. It seems to vibrate differently on different road surfaces. Going 70 on the interstate I could see the driver side mirror vibrating a bit. Doesn't this seem to be a tire issue? If so what would it be? Jack
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Hmm, the steering is ok, so it's probably not the front wheels or suspension.

Maybe it's the rear wheel hubs? Those are notorious for being overtightened and then failing early. Yours could be at the early stage.

Other than that, let's see. Is the moonroof sealing well? Just making sure it's not wind noise.

I'd ask the dealer to check the hubs.

I am looking for a Impreza Wagon and saw references to fitzmall.com in ealier postings. I liked their prices and posting methods. Any dealer like that in my region? Any feel for how much over invoice and any rumblings of incentives?
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Fitz has customers all over the country. I was there once when they were trying to do a deal with someone from Alaska! We bought both our Subies there, and don't get them serviced there. We have them serviced by a Subaru dealer closer to us. Now granted, Fitz is only about an hour from where I live, but still, it might be worth a drive down to Maryland. I would certainly call first and check to make sure they have what you want in inventory first.

I'm in Connecticut, too. Used to be a Subaru salesman to boot. Dealers around here love to beat each other out of deals. No need to leave the state. One item of note, Subaru of New England charges more for accessories than Subaru of America, so your numbers will be off when you compare invoices.
  • darubedarube Member Posts: 10
I've pretty much made my decision, so soon I will be going to the dealer to negotiate the purchase. I think I will be able to work them based on invoice, but this dealership only has a couple of basic configurations, and I am interested in some accessories.....some, such as the full front cover (protective) which may require some installation.

I was wondering whether in such a situation an installation charge is reasonable to pay for, or whether I should negotiate accessories based of of invoice as well.

Any tips would be much appreciated!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The dealer has to pay his staff. Some labor charge is certainly reasonable to put those on. I paid to have cruise installed, for instance, but it wasn't much.

My dealer basically will deal on the price of the car. Once that's done, any PIOs you want he will give @ dealer cost, since the dealer cost for PIOs includes installation.

When I bought mine, the dealer negotiated on all the options already on the car--after that, he gave me "dealer cost" on any additional ones. BTW, I got the cargo net, but the general manager actually talked me OUT of getting a front protector--he said the full length one makes it hard to open the hood, and the short acrylic one can trap moisture, tree sap, etc., and not be good for the finish. Who knows, but I figured if the dealer doesn't want to sell me the stuff, I'm not going to push the issue!
  • pattim3pattim3 Member Posts: 533
but this is news to me. I'll check it out on Monday and post what I find out. Seems strange, because they usually let us know about things like this early on.

Congrats on the purchase. Many safe and happy miles to you!!

I have the Subaru acrylic hood deflector for our OB. Sure water gets under there, but I hardly think that it's bad for the finish. The deflector sits about 1/2" above the surface, so it can air out as needed. Plus, I remove it during washes and clean both sides. I also put a good coat of wax on the surface below it.

In fact, I'm going to wax the OB today.

For a 2002 Impreza Outback FAWD 4EAT 2.5 Edmunds and Kelly give $18415. If I check what Local Dealers are posting from http://www.subaru.com I get $18626. Is the holdback still 3%? Is my region getting the pipe again?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I think freight is a little higher and some port options prices are slightly higher in NE. $18626 is probably accurate for your region.

Still, if your price is near invoice, that's a deal for all the stuff you're getting (AWD, ABS, power everything, 16" alloys, etc.).

I believe that different Subaru Distriubtors have different prices, especially Subaru of New England. If you check the section on holdback on Edmunds, you'll see that it varies by region for Subaru. Not that it's figured into your price though.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
New England Subaru Distribution is a totally different company than the rest of the country. You'll have higher prices up there on Invoice and maybe different hold backs.

Anyone know if Subaru is shipping the full-length rubber mats for the H6-3.0 (P#JS5010LS300)? I ordered them from SubaruParts.com over a month ago, and supposedly they still have not arrived at their shipping dept. from SOA.

Patti, do you have any insight on this?

    Thanks,
    Theo in Colo.

Keep on them, they can really drag their feet. It took something like 7 weeks to get my new bumper from them.

Be persistent, call them. Don't use e-mail.

I know you posted this a couple of weeks ago, but hopefully you will find this info helpful. Since you are East of the river, you can try Suburban Subaru. Windsor Locks has TY Subaru. Center Subaru in Torrington will meet/beat any other dealers prices.
As for pricing, NE dealers have to buy their subarus from Subaru of N.E., not Subaru of America. They pay more for the car, destination charge and most options. So, we the consumer get charged more accordingly. My suggestion is to take a copy of the Fitzgerald pricing to one of the CT dealers and see what they'll do for you.

Having bought 2 Foresters last year here in MA, I can tell you:

    1. base cost same
    2. freight same
    3. factory options same
    4. some Port options higher, some exceedingly so
    5. holdback is 3% but only 2% is available to dealer, the other 1% is skimmed off by Boch
    6. some package options not available, though the pieces can be bought separately at higher price
    7. some Premiums have "mystery prices" on the shown invoice

They've just opened another Subie store in Gathersburg Maryland. I know they have a Jeep and Toyota store there. I checked their site, and at the moment there are only 2 Subie Imprezas in Gathersburg.

That new store is good news for me, as Gathersburg is closer than White Flint.

    Bob
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Fitz-Subaru in Gathersburg today, out of curiosity. Fitzgeralds has a large multi-car outlet there, so I was familiar with the spot, as I had been there before. The Subaru outlet shares the same space with their Oldsmobile franchise, which is being phased out. It's in the same building which also houses their Toyota outlet. Also sold on this lot, but in a different building are Hyundais, Chryslers and Jeeps.

The Subie outlet (here) has been in operation about two weeks, and they had about a dozen or so Subies on the lot. They can always get vehicles from their White Flint store, if need be.

I'm not aware of any delay on the mats from our side of things. I would suggest that you ask the dealer how they were ordered and the order number. Then, call us with the information. We can check on the status of the dealers order.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

    Patti
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Glad to see Fitz expanding. CarPoint named them auto e-tailer of the year.

Also, what's really cool is that my buddy Jake Moran, Mike's brother, might get a job with them as a mechanic. He's in training now.

    Really good news.

    -juice
  • theobtheob Member Posts: 148
I talked to them earlier today. They said that the mats required a "special order" method, or something along those lines. Apparently the 100 or so mats that they had ordered were sitting in a warehouse in Portland, OR, and they had talked to the Sube regional rep in order find out what they had to do to get the mats shipped to them. Supposedly they're on the way from the warehouse to the dealer. If they aren't on the way to me by the end of the week, I'll pursue it with you.

Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving also. We got our first real snowfall last night that stuck to the back roads. It stuck sufficiently to find the traction limits of the tires, and enough to find that it's better to have your foot on the gas going around a corner than on the brakes. ;-)

    Thanks again Patti!

Bought my OB last year and found
    1. base invoice - higher
    2. freight - higher

what I was told by multiple CT dealers is the invoice price listed in KBB, Edmunds, NADA, etc is for dealers who purchase from SOA. The three dealers I spoke with each printed out the invoices of the car I was looking at and all three had the same base price and freight cost which was higher than what was shown in the online pricing guides. If I recall, the base cost was $50 higher and freight was around $35 more.

Frank, if you actually saw the dealer invoice and it was the same as what you saw in the online pricing guides, then either CT dealers are in cahoots with each other or MA dealers don't give a rats [non-permissible content removed] about the $85.

Where did you get your pricing?
  • bigfrank3bigfrank3 Member Posts: 426
Our Foresters definitely came from SoNE. I had price lists from several places, including Edmunds, CarPoint, PACE, etc. The base was the same as the invoice, as was the freight.

Most of the option prices were all within a few dollars of each other and the dealer's invoice... I always see the invoice or I spend my money somewhere else.

Some of the options were more, and I remember the upgraded speakers were about 3X more. The option packages weren't available, only the individual pieces.

It sounds like CT dealers have something going on. It can't be the MA dealers "giving back" because the numbers on the invoices would have still been higher than what I had in hand, and they weren't. Besides, dealers here in MA will take your first born if possible. I know dealers that type up their own "invoice" to show you.

CT should be under Ernie Boch's (SoNE) umbrella, so I think your dealers are being "frisky". Certainly your freight should be the same as mine. I believe freight is regionalized to east/west.

As I understand Ernie's deal, he makes his "bonus" by skimming 1% of the 3% holdback, and charges what he can for Port options, but factory prices (base + options) are the same. My experience seems to match that.

    Regards,
    Frank
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
You do realize that invoice prices at different times of the year (actually month to month) vary right? I've looked atmy dealers invoice for 2 of the exact same optioned cars from one month to another and the prices were different (by maybe $100)

    -mike
  • tocatoca Member Posts: 147
Frank - yes, when dealerships mention his name, it is not usually with a smile (most of the time it's with the eye brows raised). Thanks for the info. Next time it won't hurt to drive up to MA just to check pricing.

Mike, you make a valid point. I could have been caught between a price change and a not yet updated pricing list on the web.

Mind you, I'm not quibbling about paying $85 over invoice if that is in fact the case. I'm just very skeptical of dealerships sometimes.....
