Car goes in tomorrow for pre-track inspection, oil change, maybe brake flush. Then off to Summit Point Friday.
Clear something up for Mike Smith and me- if the max tire pressure on the sidewall is 35psi, how are these auto-x guys running 42? Can I run 42 this weekend?
Hmm.. if I could only afford a new 6-cylinder OB..
Maybe I should just sell mine now, since I do have my trusty Mazda MX-6 to drive still...

This morning, when I started the car up, the radio/clock lights came on for a moment, then flickered, and then went dead again. They just kind of faded out. I know the clock is working because when it flickered, the time was correct; and the radio certainly works, but...
Anybody have any ideas as to what is going on?
Bob
Best of luck!

If you browse the family page, you'll notice that my husband's name is Mike, which I guess 99% qualifies me for this board...

Back in 1996, I rented Chevy Corsica on the business trip. There were so many of them around, I had problems locating mine on the parking lots. Now I hardly see any. Did they all die a sudden and suspicioud death? 4 years is not such a long time...
As for tire pressures, I'm sure those are conservatively low numbers meant for on-street driving, complete with pot-holes and customers demanding good ride quality. For example, my tire pressure gauge mentions a range of 26-32psi for "passenger cars".
Guess yours is (temporarily) a race car, so you are exempt!
Bob: the bulb on my Escort's radio burned out once. It was a pain, but I changed it. For Ford radios you need that tool to remove the head unit, you know what I'm talking about? The bulb is the same as the vanity mirrors uses.
Kate: nice photos. I loved Big Sur. Took the wife there a few years back in a rental Cavalier convertible.
Your "convertible" looks more fun, and you certainly went places I couldn't access! BTW, nice tint, too.
Ross: the radio station could have just given away ONE Forester!

Loved your photos. Where in Big Sur is that? Was it a long stretch of unpaved road? If yes, I'd like to try it out too.
Ken
Took it out to the coast last weekend, but didn't do the "Juice Dune Challenge." One tiny annoyance - when the sunroof is open all the way, there's a persistent squeak (on anything but the smoothest road), like rubbing two pieces of styrofoam together - emanates from directly behind driver and to the left somewhat. It goes away with the glass closed and the inside cover re-opened. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else has come across this.
Otherwise, what a great machine. I do wish they had offered the S+ in blue.
jg
Looks like I definitely missed out on a lot at Big Sur. Even if I knew about it I doubt I would have taken a Cavalier there. It had enough cowl shake on smooth roads!
-juice
Ah, yes -- the Coastal Byways book. I have that too. Thanks for the tip.
Ken
Got to work on those priorities...

I used to own a Chevy Corsica (89) that I drove last about a year ago. My mom uses it now as a "emergency" car. I could list alot of problems with it (auto transmission skipping gears, tires, 360 spin-outs, plastic door panels fell off, lights stopped working), blah blah blah..
But you know for a GM car, which I paid 7000 CDN for used in 91, it worked out to be a good deal for a student. Put over 200,000 miles on it, and really drove it hard

I do get to take rental Exploders out in the dunes for work a lot. POS gets stuck almost every time. Last time I got stuck (in 4 Low), the rear wheels (only in up to their hubs) wouldn't even move, while the fronts were spinning like crazy. What's up with that? I thought 4WD meant 4WD.
My dogs love the beach, too. They didn't come to the Outer Banks this year, but maybe next year.
4WD is 4WD under ideal circumstances. With two open diffys it could deliver power to just two wheels, one per axle, if the other wheels are slipping. A limited slip or locking diffy fixes that.
I believe the Explorer has a locking center differential. But all that means is the front and rear axle will spin at the same speeds.
Newer ones have a limited slip rear axle, but the front diffy is open and the wheel could still spin the way you described.

Check out how the Forester helped us pick apples!
We were having trouble getting the strollers through, and it was hot and full of bugs. But that was pre-Forester.
Sandy picked us up and drove us around in air conditioned comfort, all up and down the farm. The further we went, the better the apples got.
It was kind of our very own private hay ride, without the lines. Or the bugs, the heat, the costs.
The catch: you can see how dusty it was, and why some people like a rear dust deflector. I later used the rear wiper/washer, but Sandy had just been washed and now she's a mess again.
Gotta wash and wax her up for Sunday.

So how did you go about picking the name for your Forester?
Ken
Kate, nice pics! Wish I was back by the Ocean again..
MikeF
I am trying to convince my fiance to go camping in Shenandoah this weekend, so we can participate in the FF tour in Charlottesville on Sunday. So far she's not too interested in either idea, but I have a few more tricks up my sleeve (groveling, begging, sobbing).
Craig
Those fresh apples sound delicious right now before work!
chris
Craig: it was funny. I tried to blow off the dust along the outer edges, and sure enough most of it comes off. I got lucky - it's raining today.
Chris: that would work for me - on the drive home I more than doubled the 30mph required to clean it off.
Really, try to come. Tell her we'll have a diverse group there, families and kids included, men and women, young and old. Not just immature men like me!

It seems Subaru's are the perfect car for apple picking. My wife and I went a few days ago and had a great time. The farm had dirt paths all through and I could not resist, I just had to take the OB around. I know that it was not really off roading, but it is the closest I will probably come (till the snow!), and Boy was it great. My wife even had a great time. She kept on saying "You would never have done this in our old Honda." The car rode great,so much so that I started looking for the deeper and rockier ground to go over. As for the rear dust deflector, it did reduce the amount on the back window. Now its time to make some apple pie!
BTW hope everyone has a great time this weekend at the fall tour. It looks like it would be fun but since I have no more days off, and it is a 6-7 hour drive to get to I will have to pass. I hope one day to be able to join you folks and meet in person the people who helped educate me so much about Subaru's. I love the idea of the SCOA, just like I love my Subaru.
FWD cars made it on some of the trails (not all), but there was plenty of wheel spinning and bottoming out. Sandy laughed her way through.
Our pie was good by dry, but what's the secret to get that nice, thick syrup?

Isn't life grand?
To Craig's fiancé: I hope you and Craig make it; it'd be great to meet both of you.
Sincerely,
Mike

It's too easy to be boring
Stephen
I hope we can make it -- it would be nice to meet everyone.
Craig
erudite: uh, where's that dictionary...
respectful: see polite, above.
normal: how many other Foresters have you seen with front and rear chassis bracing and a child seat in the back?
I'd say that everyone else was polite, eru..., um, how do you speel it again? Um, as I was saying, and respectul. But quirky for sure!
The best thing I can say is that I always learn a thing or two (or six) at each event, and my wife ends up having to drag me away kicking and screaming.

I'm still PLANNING to come to the Fall Foliage tour, but I'm having a heck of a time getting one for the weekend. We only have a couple of them and they are either taken apart for our training, (I'm amazed that they are willing to do that) or traveling for these Subaru Academy courses for dealers. I'm going to persist however.
I should be on every night from now on, so bring on the questions! I know someone wanted to know more about the MacIntosh stereo. I have some printed material I can copy for you, so send me an e-mail at pmickel@Subaru.com with an address and I'll get it out to you.
Also, can you provide me any info at all about actual release dates and drivetrains for the Impreza Wagon (not the turbo)? Wouldn't want you to break any rules, but we are technically 4 months away, and potential buyers need something to cling to. God forbid I should start casting a wishful eye on a Golf...

Now I'll have to go and dream up some more mundane images. Does he own a suit?

There are a lot more articles on the H6 Outback to have a clook at as well on subaru.com.au.

By the way, I'm jealous of you who are going to be at the fall foliage tour. My company has decided that I have to go to Stockholm that weekend :-P
