Got a cool denim Subaru shirt for the track this weekend AND a keychain AND glasses!!

Car goes in tomorrow for pre-track inspection, oil change, maybe brake flush. Then off to Summit Point Friday.

Clear something up for Mike Smith and me- if the max tire pressure on the sidewall is 35psi, how are these auto-x guys running 42? Can I run 42 this weekend?

I'm not sure I'm really back in the fold... but thanks for the re-welcome anyway. What I've discovered is that I can't trade the OB for anything else worthy enough. But I still might sell the OB outright, because I do have issues with my particular one.

Hmm.. if I could only afford a new 6-cylinder OB..

Maybe I should just sell mine now, since I do have my trusty Mazda MX-6 to drive still...

I had a strange thing happen with my '98 Explorer yesterday: the lights in my radio/clock went out. I've never had this happen before on any vehicle.

This morning, when I started the car up, the radio/clock lights came on for a moment, then flickered, and then went dead again. They just kind of faded out. I know the clock is working because when it flickered, the time was correct; and the radio certainly works, but...

Anybody have any ideas as to what is going on?

Have you checked the battery? I know sometimes it can do pretty strange things, even though it may seem like it still has some life in it. You may also want to check all of the relevant fuses if you haven't done so already.

    Best of luck!

Yea, I know! Your radio is about to die. First it will display Klingon graphics, followed by unstoppable volume swells. After 6 months it will die all together. At least that is what has happened to us. :( (1991 Explorer Sport 2WD)

I finally caught up with a new century and bought a scanner. Now you can see pix of my baby the Forester at (where else) HomePage.com:

    Kate's Forester

If you browse the family page, you'll notice that my husband's name is Mike, which I guess 99% qualifies me for this board...

Hehe Kate, another Mike. Nice looking machine. Big Sur? Awesome! Went there with my girlfriend (now wife) .. fond memories of Big Sur. Oh, and my wife? She's a saint for letting me take her wagon to the track for a driving school (see Events). Bless you, my dear.

A local radio station is having a contest with a prize that originally confused me but now seens to make perfect sense - 2 Chevrolets and $5000 Cn. One to drive, one in the shop, money for repairs. :-)

remember the Corsica model (replaced by Malibu in 1997-98)?

Back in 1996, I rented Chevy Corsica on the business trip. There were so many of them around, I had problems locating mine on the parking lots. Now I hardly see any. Did they all die a sudden and suspicioud death? 4 years is not such a long time...

Loosh: sounds like you'll be appropriately attired! We'll all do the rain-dance for you!

As for tire pressures, I'm sure those are conservatively low numbers meant for on-street driving, complete with pot-holes and customers demanding good ride quality. For example, my tire pressure gauge mentions a range of 26-32psi for "passenger cars".

Guess yours is (temporarily) a race car, so you are exempt! ;)

Bob: the bulb on my Escort's radio burned out once. It was a pain, but I changed it. For Ford radios you need that tool to remove the head unit, you know what I'm talking about? The bulb is the same as the vanity mirrors uses.

Kate: nice photos. I loved Big Sur. Took the wife there a few years back in a rental Cavalier convertible.

Your "convertible" looks more fun, and you certainly went places I couldn't access! BTW, nice tint, too.

Ross: the radio station could have just given away ONE Forester! :)

    Kate,

Loved your photos. Where in Big Sur is that? Was it a long stretch of unpaved road? If yes, I'd like to try it out too.

01 Forester s+ (all black) has been the perfect weekend getaway car. Load dog, CDs, other crap1 and off we go - been able to hit the lakes and mountains of Eastern OR, lots of gravel/ dirt/unimproved/ logging roads - excellent.

Took it out to the coast last weekend, but didn't do the "Juice Dune Challenge." One tiny annoyance - when the sunroof is open all the way, there's a persistent squeak (on anything but the smoothest road), like rubbing two pieces of styrofoam together - emanates from directly behind driver and to the left somewhat. It goes away with the glass closed and the inside cover re-opened. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else has come across this.

Otherwise, what a great machine. I do wish they had offered the S+ in blue.

I took the route # 18 from the Tony Huegel's "Coastal Byways" book, I think it's called "Old Coast road", and it's a) unpaved and b) beautiful, with variety of scenery, from narrow shady curves amongst redwoods to open airy mountain vistas.

jg: no sand? C'mon! Any photos?

Looks like I definitely missed out on a lot at Big Sur. Even if I knew about it I doubt I would have taken a Cavalier there. It had enough cowl shake on smooth roads! ;)

    Kate,

I used to own a Chevy Corsica (89) that I drove last about a year ago. My mom uses it now as a "emergency" car. I could list alot of problems with it (auto transmission skipping gears, tires, 360 spin-outs, plastic door panels fell off, lights stopped working), blah blah blah..

But you know for a GM car, which I paid 7000 CDN for used in 91, it worked out to be a good deal for a student. Put over 200,000 miles on it, and really drove it hard :)

Juice- OR beaches were designated public lands long ago, so one can (theoretically) drive the beach from end to end. However; the dog much prefers the beach under his own power.

I do get to take rental Exploders out in the dunes for work a lot. POS gets stuck almost every time. Last time I got stuck (in 4 Low), the rear wheels (only in up to their hubs) wouldn't even move, while the fronts were spinning like crazy. What's up with that? I thought 4WD meant 4WD.
  • Options
    ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Ash: is that miles or kilometers? ;)

My dogs love the beach, too. They didn't come to the Outer Banks this year, but maybe next year.

4WD is 4WD under ideal circumstances. With two open diffys it could deliver power to just two wheels, one per axle, if the other wheels are slipping. A limited slip or locking diffy fixes that.

I believe the Explorer has a locking center differential. But all that means is the front and rear axle will spin at the same speeds.

Newer ones have a limited slip rear axle, but the front diffy is open and the wheel could still spin the way you described.

I really love that top-front view.

Check out how the Forester helped us pick apples!

We were having trouble getting the strollers through, and it was hot and full of bugs. But that was pre-Forester.

Sandy picked us up and drove us around in air conditioned comfort, all up and down the farm. The further we went, the better the apples got.

It was kind of our very own private hay ride, without the lines. Or the bugs, the heat, the costs.

The catch: you can see how dusty it was, and why some people like a rear dust deflector. I later used the rear wiper/washer, but Sandy had just been washed and now she's a mess again.

Gotta wash and wax her up for Sunday.

My back window looked the same way after driving through an orchard -- who ever thought they were so dusty?? Rear wiper comes in handy . . I had about 1/4" of dirt on top of the back bumper too.

I am trying to convince my fiance to go camping in Shenandoah this weekend, so we can participate in the FF tour in Charlottesville on Sunday. So far she's not too interested in either idea, but I have a few more tricks up my sleeve (groveling, begging, sobbing).

on "Ruby" ('00 OB, wntrgrn.) doesn't seem to do much until we reach 30 MPH or more. My last voyage into the dust didn't exceed that for 14 miles or more and so we lost most of the back window view (didn't dare used the wiper!) until we hit the smooth stuff and got more airflow. Maybe some sort of clip-on low speed air-scoop needs to be invented for those dust crawling days.

Those fresh apples sound delicious right now before work!

Ken: easy - at the beach! :)

Craig: it was funny. I tried to blow off the dust along the outer edges, and sure enough most of it comes off. I got lucky - it's raining today.

Chris: that would work for me - on the drive home I more than doubled the 30mph required to clean it off.

Really, try to come. Tell her we'll have a diverse group there, families and kids included, men and women, young and old. Not just immature men like me!

    Juice,

It seems Subaru's are the perfect car for apple picking. My wife and I went a few days ago and had a great time. The farm had dirt paths all through and I could not resist, I just had to take the OB around. I know that it was not really off roading, but it is the closest I will probably come (till the snow!), and Boy was it great. My wife even had a great time. She kept on saying "You would never have done this in our old Honda." The car rode great,so much so that I started looking for the deeper and rockier ground to go over. As for the rear dust deflector, it did reduce the amount on the back window. Now its time to make some apple pie!

BTW hope everyone has a great time this weekend at the fall tour. It looks like it would be fun but since I have no more days off, and it is a 6-7 hour drive to get to I will have to pass. I hope one day to be able to join you folks and meet in person the people who helped educate me so much about Subaru's. I love the idea of the SCOA, just like I love my Subaru.

So true. It's not that lesser cars (I love saying that) can't make it, it's just that you're more comfortable with a wide margin of error. So you go places you otherwise wouldn't.

FWD cars made it on some of the trails (not all), but there was plenty of wheel spinning and bottoming out. Sandy laughed her way through.

Our pie was good by dry, but what's the secret to get that nice, thick syrup?

I was apprehensive about meeting people over the net (so were my wife and Hutch's wife): juice at a DC auto show, WDB (francophile, then in PA now in CA) & Bob (rsholland) at an i Club meet; Lucien & Q, Hutch (thecat), brothers Mike and Jake Moran at Rocks State Park; Mike Torricelli (paisan from NY) and Garry Grimes (Mr. SCOA) at Valley Forge; Frank (p0926) when in town on training. All these people come from different walks of life; some are older, many younger than me; some single; some married, some with children, but every person I've met has one thing is common -- no, it's not Subarus: they're all polite, erudite, respectful and above all, normal people.

    Isn't life grand?

To Craig's fiancé: I hope you and Craig make it; it'd be great to meet both of you.

    Sincerely,

    Mike

Thanks, I'll pass on the message. Harmony really thinks I'm a geek when it comes to Soobs (and Macs), so I don't have a lot of credibility! If I told her I wanted to go meet other "normal" Soob enthusiasts, it would probably be the nail in the coffin for sure! But, I'll play up the other angles: scenery, fun, wineries, etc.

I hope we can make it -- it would be nice to meet everyone.

polite: you haven't seen the old Forester vs. Brand X boards.

    erudite: uh, where's that dictionary...

    respectful: see polite, above.

normal: how many other Foresters have you seen with front and rear chassis bracing and a child seat in the back?

I'd say that everyone else was polite, eru..., um, how do you speel it again? Um, as I was saying, and respectul. But quirky for sure!

The best thing I can say is that I always learn a thing or two (or six) at each event, and my wife ends up having to drag me away kicking and screaming.

I'm back! It's been a crazy week. First to LL Bean in Maine (beautiful country) and then more training on the VDC. Since I'm not very technical, I might not be able to answer a lot of questions, but I can try. Let me know what you want to know?

I'm still PLANNING to come to the Fall Foliage tour, but I'm having a heck of a time getting one for the weekend. We only have a couple of them and they are either taken apart for our training, (I'm amazed that they are willing to do that) or traveling for these Subaru Academy courses for dealers. I'm going to persist however.

I should be on every night from now on, so bring on the questions! I know someone wanted to know more about the MacIntosh stereo. I have some printed material I can copy for you, so send me an e-mail at pmickel@Subaru.com with an address and I'll get it out to you.

They gotta do something with the website. I have a 56k modem, but still all that Flash threatens to clog up the line. ESPECIALLY the build your own part. Also, it is not readily obvious how to see colors and specs. Seems you have to "build your own" first. Additionally, there is no information on accessories or add-ons. Why not? Can't find out about racks, wheel options, clothing.... Now that I am a potential shopper again, I found the experience a little irritating. The Aussie site is flash intensive, but lets you get to the info you want all at once.

Also, can you provide me any info at all about actual release dates and drivetrains for the Impreza Wagon (not the turbo)? Wouldn't want you to break any rules, but we are technically 4 months away, and potential buyers need something to cling to. God forbid I should start casting a wishful eye on a Golf...

Boy, that has sure spoilt one of my great images of people met over the net. I had Juice marked down as the sort of bloke who has the Subaru symbol tattooed on one hand and S A N D Y across the knuckles.

http://www.autoweb.com.au/start_/showall_on/id_SUB/doc_sub00101713/article.html is a good kicking off point for anyone interested in the H6. Towing capacity is listed at 1600kg Price of $51990 (in Oz Dollars) is pretty cheap for you at about USD 26930 after the slide in the Oz Dollar in last few weeks.

There are a lot more articles on the H6 Outback to have a clook at as well on subaru.com.au.
