    Hope you see this before the time comes... accept my condolences along with everyone else's. We had to put our horse down 4 years ago - middle of the night, dead of winter, had to close the curtains so the boys wouldn't see her before school the next morning... 'tis hard, we all know, and we in our own ways will be there with you tomorrow.

    Peace,
    Paul

    Tweeter kit is a reality... sixteen bucks, but specific to the OB. Ordered it today, should be here by Friday.

    Cheers!

    My heart goes out to you and your family. I can't imagine how hard it must be to make the humane decision. Our Maggie is still young, but she is so much a part of our family.

    You will be in our thoughts and prayers. There is a beautiful story about pets in heaven. I'll find it and send it to you directly.

    I saw that, Paul. The Impreza's tweeter kit has a different part number, and costs more. Do you think either one will fit the Forester? I think the tweeteres in the Outback are on the A-pillar, right? Where are the Impreza's tweeters?

    Annual Report: I quickly went to the products section (where the beef is), and noticed the 2005 SUW will have a Subaru platform, while rumors have hinted at a GM Lambda chassis. Also, they say the CVT will expand, even though it sounds like Europe or Japan. But parts sharing with Suzuki? Have you seen the materials in the Vitara? I hope they use Subaru parts, and not the other way around.

    Welcome to GM. I personally think the suzuki parts are excellent. Almost everyone I know with a suzuki swears by em.

    Product sharing with Suzuki has been on the boards for some time now. Not for N. America though. Also, don't forget that the Justy is built by Suzuki.

    I always like to refer back to FHI's 5 year business plan from 2000 to see how they're doing.

    Juice they could share some fine things from the GM parts bin as the Aztec designers or the quality crappalier stuff :)

    I think the head of the Aztec team was promoted. I'm serious.

    Notice in the report that Subaru will sell a GM product (multipassenger vehicle) in Japan under the Subaru name. Also, Subaru and GM are jointly developing an SUV multipassenger vehicle for release in 2005. How is Subaru going to market their un-SUV brand when they now produce an SUV? This definitely scares me. Although I think GM makes good powertrains, the rest of the package is poorly designed.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    That's the Traviq (Opel Astra minivan clone) they are referring to. I read that too, but it's funny how vague they are about it.

    The 2005 is the rumored SUW, 3 row seat Grand Outback, or whatever you want to call it.

    I thought the FIA was banning tobacco sponsorships.

    Speedvision's Rally of Monte Carlo starts tomorrow!!

    Yep, by 2006, all tobacco sponsorship is gone from all FIA sanctioned events, but...$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ talks, nobody walks! For all you old folks liek me, what commercial was that from?

    Tomorrow night at 11 PM...a preview, then each night after that for coverage...

    What does everybody have and why do you choose what you have? I had Road & Track for many years, but dropped it a couple years ago because the Track aspect didn't appeal to me anymore. I am considering Motor Trend or Car and Driver now. Anything else (Automobile or Autoweek or even Import Sports Car) I should consider?

    Jim
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    I get the following:

    C&D: most complete road tests, for example top speed tests are done for every car. But way too politically opinionated, so I skip the editorials. Loosh called them "nutcase militia monthly" and he has a point, but at least the reviews are sound.

    Autoweek: indispensible. Read it here first. Some times I read things there 2-3 months before the monthlies get to it. Great in every way, and weekly to boot.

    Automotive News: a bit over the top for regular car fans, this is an industry weekly meant for dealers. But it has more news than AN, and it published by the same people. For a car nut like me who wants to be the first to know, I like it.

    Consumer Reports: often criticized, but the data provided is simply not offered anywhere else. They publish payload, towing, useful cargo room, and include details about safety that noone else does (pre-tensioners, adjustbale height anchors, LATCH, etc). Data is complete, though subjective opinions are from the soccer-mom perspective. I read it FWIW and get a lot out of it.

    Edmunds: read on-line, for another opinion on the reviews. Easy access. They tend to pick on Subaru for whatever reason.

    Motorweek: on TV, weekly. Fun and easy to watch, plus they're in my state. Not the most technically accurate, but OK for kicks.

    I subscribe to Sport Compact Car. You can learn a lot from that magazine. They have coverage of the SCCA US Rally, great tech articles and this month's issue has an article about riding shotgun in the WRC car with Petter Solberg in Finland.

    Hi Jim,

    Based on recommendations here, I subscribe to Automobile (monthly). If I had more time, I'd subscribe to Autoweek (Loosh/lucien2 is also a fan). I subscribe to Consumer Reports for the reasons juice mentioned, plus they pay attention to cockpit ergonomics and identify niggles that I would otherwise miss (easy-spill 00 Passat cup holder comes to mind). I read CR primarily for appliance reviews and vehicle frequency-of-repair data (not flawless but still useful).

    I think C&D is the best monthly, even if their grumpy-old-man editorials are usually of no interest to me. Easy to overlook since the resat of the magazine is so good. For testing and data analysis, they are really good -- they use advanced techniques to record and correct their data. As far as I know, they are one of the few (maybe only) car mag to do that.

    - don't leave home without it. One of the monthly mags (whatever is having a sale going at the time), and consumer reports which is good for the dishwashers & stuff and it has the reliability stats which are important for ownership and none of the other mags care about at all!

    Pat--My sympathies are with you and your family. I have the poem that Patti referred to to help me feel better whenever I think of our dog, Pepper. I hope it will help you and anyone else who has lost one of our animal friends.

    The Rainbow Bridge
    There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
    When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.
    There is only one thing missing: They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly looks up! The nose twitches. The ears are up. The eyes are staring. And this one suddenly runs from the group.
    You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
    Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.
    ~~~Pat
    Tweeters on the outback are on the door, snap off the cover on the door mirror and snap on the tweeters.
    The wire is right there when you snap off the little cover, not sure where thr Foresters are mounted.
    See the photo again in the photo gallery that I put up showing the plastic on the floor you can see the tweeter mounted on the door.
    Cheers Pat.
    Quick catchup:
    juice: WRC offseason is very short, less than 2 months.
    Part sharing: I noticed that the large side mirrors (the housing, not the lenses) on my Forester S are stamped "Nissan." I wonder which model shares them - Pathfinder or Xterra? I'd laugh if it were the latter.
    Mag subscriptions: R&T, Turning Wheels (monthly of the international Studebaker Drivers Club), RallyXS (just started), Drive (SoA house pub - came with the territory ;-) ). I get hand-me-down Autoweeks from a friend. I will pick up Automobile, C&D and/or the British Car off the newsstand if there are articles of interest. C&D has to be really good that month as I have a really hard time buying it due to Yates and Bedard. They seem to think it their duty to transform C&D into the automotive equivalent of National Review or The American Spectator. (I still have a pipe dream of DRIVING [edit - NOT "diring"] in Yates' One Lap, though.)
    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Pat: the Forester has in a different location. It's in the door, towards the front of the handle. Maybe the tweeters are sized differently, then.
    Ed: the mirrors on the S are bigger than those on the L models. I wonder if mine are Nissan pieces?
    Yates is the militia nutcase. Bedard is just paranoid. I like Csere but he's too into luxury cars.
    -juice
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
    Dunno, juice - looking at other Subaru websites worldwide it doesn't appear that any of the high-line Foresters outside of North America get the larger mirrors.
    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Probably because they figured americans would tow more. I have towed, and could've used bigger mirrors, so I see the reason for them.
    -juice
  • hammersleyhammersley Member Posts: 684
    Mags: C&D is the only car mag I get... aside from Drive, of course :) Despite the rant content, the columns previously mentioned are still amusing.
    And maybe I am part grumpy old man!
    Juice: OB tweeters, Pat's right - snap off the triangular cover at mirror level on the base of the A-pillar. I'm operating on faith that the wires are there - haven't looked yet!
    Apologies if my posts seem late or less than timely of late... getting started on a room remodel, and the little details take a lot of time... haven't even applied any paint yet! Sheesh! I will catch up, I promise! (someday!)
    Cheers!
    Sensing when I must travel, she refuses
    To sleep downstairs. She comes into the bedroom,
    Nuzzles her biscuit into a corner,
    Circles twice, and lies down at my feet.
    Her sleep is sound, and I sleep soundly too,
    As if we were sculptures in an abbey,
    Memorialized by a forgotten artist
    Who understood the neccessities of friendship.
    It's likely she will die before I die,
    And though I have no faith in streets of gold,
    I have half-confidence that I will meet her
    On this side of a bridge across death's river,
    Letting arriving spirits pat and scratch her,
    Or stretching out, her head between her paws
    As if for sleep, but with her eyes wide open,
    Watching, waiting, sure that I will get there,
    Sure that I will find her among thousands,
    Coming gladly with a leash to link us
    So we can go to death as on a walk.
    I have had a subscription to Motor Trend since 1980. The format & staff has changed a number of times, but it fills the basic needs. I guess I have stayed with it more out of habit than anything else. Also Consumer Reports for the same reasons that Juice mentioned. I recently also added a subscription to Road & Track, and pick up others occasionally at the news stand if I see something interesting, or have time to kill in an airport (particularly O'Hare....).
    The pet poems posted by Pat & Lucien tear at my heart. Remember reading them on the AOL pet boards when we were in our 'dark' period of loss (3 times in less than 5 years). It really sucks to be seen crying at work!!!
    Grassroots Motorsports
    Sports Car (SCCA Magazine)
    Regular car mags are pretty biased toward their high $ generating advertisers so I usually go out and test drive @ dealers as many cars as possible :)
  • Pat:
    You mentioned today, Thursday, is the day you have to take your loved one into the vet. I just wanted to send you my condolences. As a dog lover myself (two golden retrievers), that is a decision I hate to even think about. You of course have made the most loving decision for Toby, but that doesn't make it any easier on you. My thoughts are with you.
    Pat- you're welcome. From an anthology called "Dog Music." With Riley right there at my feet, it was no picnic to type out....
    Chat- doubt if I'll make it. No Speedvision here, either. :'(
    Mags- I have voiced my opinion about C&D before; suffice to say I am not a fan. I like the writing in Automobile, as they share some staff with the far more entertaining (and pretty) CAR magazine (UK). I do also subscribe to SPorts Car and Autoweek, and plan to pick up Grassroots at some point.
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
    For those that have installed them recently, do you hear a big difference in sound? i.e. are they worth installing? For $16 I will do it if it makes a difference.
    Thanks,
    They gave me this poem at the vets today when I took Toby in to have him put to sleep.
    If it should be.
    If it should be that I grow frail and weak
    And pain should keep me from my sleep
    Then you must do what must be done
    For this, the last battle can,t be won.
    You will be sad I understand
    Don,t let grief then stay your hand
    for this day, more than all the rest
    Your love and friendship, stand the test
    We,ve had so many happy years
    What is to come can hold no fears
    You,d not want me to suffer, so
    When the time comes please let me go
    Take me where my needs they,ll tend
    Only, stay with me until the end
    And hold me firm and speak to me
    Until my eyes no longer see.
    I know in time, you too, will see
    It is a kindness you do for me
    Although my tail, its last has waved
    From pain and suffering I have been saved.
    Don,t grieve that it should be you
    Who must decide this thing to do
    We,ve been so close, we two these years
    Don,t let your heart hold any tears.
    Cheers Pat.
    Once again from Rita and I a heartfelt thanks for all the kind thoughts and wishes and condolences expressed here. Know that it made a supremely difficult decision a little easier to take.
    Autoweek.
    Having buried too many cats (even one is too many), I agree that it is one of the more unpleasant burdens in the cycle of life. The 3 cats we have now are middle aged and deeply loved. Reading these messages and thinking of those upcoming days at first made me very sad, but then I realized that I had been given a gift, foresight, by being able to look through the eyes of others.
    Thank you all very much! Now please excuse me while I go and spend some quality time with my pets.
    It may be too soon to ask, but have you considered getting another pet? I know you need to grieve, but sometimes replacing your old pet quickly helps ease the pain. Just a thought...
    Hang in there, Pat, we're all thinking about you.
    It's been almost a year since Ashley left us, but I can honestly say that if I can to go back and do it again, I'd still have adopted her, no question. Not only do I think we improved her life by adopting her, but she also improved ours.
    I think I'll take Hadji out for an extra long walk today.
    is the BEST!!! Dina was rescued from a kill-shelter in central Florida by a no-kill shelter...the night we took her home (after SHE picked out Michael as her future owner!) she fell asleep on his lap on the drive home...it was meant to be. There are too many animals in shelters...the need to buy a puppy at holiday times is not only increasing the shelter population, but also serves to keep the puppy mills in business. If you knwo anyone looking for a pet, please encourage them to go to a local shelter. Not only will you save a life, but the animals instinctively know that they have been saved.
