Yeah, there was a big deal made of the my.subaru invitations over on I-club. I would bet thats why everyone showed up for the chat en masse.

I doubt that Edmunds expected the kind of volume they got. That chat format works for about up to 20 people, that's about it.

Given there were more than 100 people, there is no way they could answer even 1 question per guest in just 60 minutes.

after the ether swallowed 1 of my posts. It's no loss though.

Anytime something is advertised that heavily, there's no way that everyone will have their questions answered. I got two emails from mysubaru and anything mentioned on the i-club will bring a huge audience.

One chat room would be helpful. Patti, you PM'd me a question and were gone within 10 seconds. :-) I was busy trying to figure out where everyone was going and couldn't go to different rooms for some reason.

Questions ahead of time may be more helpful. A lot of questions are things that can be answered in the owner's manual.

Who was the moderator besides juice?

    My 2 cents. :-)

Actually, I was not moderator. It was KN? Anyone know who that is?

Patti was floating around, but the Q & A was handled by the Edmunds host. I thought he did well given lots and lots of questions did get through.

    it's flying now.
Must have switched over to a turbo-charged server, and the turbo haven't spooled up yet earlier :D

Thanks for asking for me. I was in and out of the chat myself a few times. I didn't get much out of it, the usual "see your dealer" or "call 800 subaru 3" that was kinda disappointing.

Whew! I finally made it in here. Sheesh, who didn't feed the hamster this morning? :-)

I talked to pf_flyer/Bob this morn. He was one of last night's chat moderators. He is guessing there were 400-450 at last night's chat!!!! That may be a record for Town Hall.

Some how I think that unless they said "the H8 and H10 models are coming soon on all models and at current prices", paisan wouldn't be happy. ;-)

*gasp* 400 people! My estimate was way too low!

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
But I found it useless that most of their responses were contact your dealer or contact the 800 #. Thank you Dick Tracey, we didn't need to hear them spew out those lines...

Who's your Mark or Ira buddies in S.I.? Is one of them the manager?
I have a friend looking for a WRX and he doesn't want to trek to SW Jersey. A guy in SI doesn't want to confirm a price on the phone.
(oops, this should've been in "Dealers")

    -Dennis
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Mark is my salesman. Does he live on SI? My guy won't confirm the price on the phone, just tell him to stop in and see him and tell him I sent him over there. He'll do good by him.

mike - I actually sent the host a private message and asked him to post your question, but when he called you, you didn't respond. Maybe by then you had given up, but they did at least give you a chance.

Oh well. I was curious to have that question answered, too. It's the perfect question for our list to submit in advance, though. Maybe Patti can twist their arms into joining us for another chat without advertising it?

  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
    mike - He's in Manhattan.

edit: He wants red and they found one with 20 miles on it at another dealer. By them time they get it, it will have 150.
Would you guys buy a WRX with 150 supposedly non-test driven miles? I don't think I would.

juice- I was ready to go with my 3 part question on torque splits.
    1. Any truth to the urban legend about locking the split in "R" or "1"?
    2. Max range of the VC? I've heard from 10/90 - 90/10.
    3. Max range of the VTD split?

Again, I think it was a great gesture by Subaru to offer such a chat. We're lucky to own vehicles by a company that's willing to put us in touch with their head people.

Kudos to KH for fielding so many questions. 400 participants is amazing!!

The questions seemed to be bipolar: RTFM or owner specific. I think for most of us here, the few general questions we already knew the answers to. If you think about it, that's what we normally see in the General Maintenance and Repair topic in Subaru Crew. People either ask very basic stuff in the owner's manual or they're looking for specific items that they really should be taking up with a dealer.

For a topic of this nature, I think it might have been helpful for Edmund's to collect questions before hand and generate a list of FAQ. This way, our Rick and Pete could rattle those off first and then field deeper questions.

The other way to do it is make the chat topic more specific: general maintenance questions regarding Subaru engines and oil type. There were lots of questions about oil and oil changes last night.

even with all the problems we encountered last night, both Edmunds and SOA deserve a lot of credit for at least trying.

Now if we can just get the kinks worked out...

The theme seemed to be synthetic oils last night. Every other question was on that topic. Basically they said sure, use them, but start early on. Don't switch if you're been using dino for a long time already or the seals could leak.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I popped in and out of the chat, had stuff to do and after seeing the "call the 800#" and "defer to your dealer" as the answers over and over it got boring.

    -mike
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Shoot me an e-mail with what he wants and his #. I'll call mark up personally and see if he can help him out.

    -mike
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
The one other thing I caught on about synthetics and didn't get a chance to ask was if you make the switch "never look back".

I can understand the argument to make the switch early due to the leaky seals argument, but if you do switch early, why couldn't you just switch back to conventional?

Ken's post #8816 pretty much sums up why I didn't participate in last night's chat. I'll wait for the transcript to be posted.

some guy was asking questions about his Justy! Granted, it is a Subaru... However, in an limited 1-hour format, spending time on a question like that is of little benefit to owners of more commonplace Subies.

    Bob
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I guess then my XT6 and SVX questions were crap too. Afterall there are tons more Justys than SVX and XT6 combined.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, that was funny. Though he got something like 180k miles on his original clutch. I told him to replace it with the same thing!

but it didn't work for me at all. I appreciate the effort. Most of what I got on my screen was a lot of blooping as people ducked in and out of the room, so I left. Maybe I didn't stay long enough to figure out the format.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Don't feel bad. I did stay, and I still haven't figured it out...

As a newbie here I thought it would be nice to finally catch one of the chats, I don't know if it was good thing or not. It was confusing at first and many of the oil related questions could have been answered rather quickly if they could have been sent in earlier, using the FAQ method someone mentioned earlier. I take it that not that many people usually show up and this created most of the mess, then there was the problem of "do I post a (?) or an actual question" thing going on. Hopefully I'll be able to catch one that isn't so crazy some day.
I do have to say it was quite fun watching a little craziness developing in there at times. :-)

that was NOT a "normal" chat, by any stretch of the imagination... that was a special event that overwhelmed the format. Normal Thursday night chats are a dozen or so Subaru fans sitting around talking about Subarus and a whole bunch of other stuff :) Join us next week!

    Cheers!

So what did they mean by "early on?" Before 10k?

    Jillian
  • hammersleyhammersley Member Posts: 684
Dunno... first oil change too soon? Or wait til after "break-in"?

Doesn't apply to me... I just turned 70K.

    Cheers!

Kurt: join us next week. I'd say a typical chat has maybe 12-15 people, and a quick but manageable pace. Usually we'll have 2-3 conversations going on at the same time, with a wide variety of topics discussed. Something for everyone.

Good question, Jillian. In a follow-up question, they said 6500 miles was not too late to switch, FWIW.

My mechanic told me 10k miles for the switch
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
My guess is that Subaru doesn't have an exact number for when "early on" is. It's probably just a rule of thumb -- the earlier the less likely chance that any gaps in seals are being plugged by sludge. I've switched at 40K miles or so and have had no problems.

Synthetic oil for the engine is a waste of money. The reason for changing oil is not because it is worn out or broke down (years ago term), you are changing the oil because of contamination from the combustion process. This contamination cannot be filtered out, also the acids from combustion need to be neutralized by the base in the oil. This is called the TBN number or total base number. Why use synthetic oil in the engine when you are getting 200K out of it already. The body will rust before the engine is shot. Use synthetic oils in the transmission, differentials and other compartments that don';t get changed frequently and where synthetic will really make a difference.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I wouldn't be so sure that modern engines with modern mineral-based oils don't break down.

Read any of the toyota sludge topics lately?

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
I dunno about that. Double-sided galvanized steel is kind of hard to rust.

Thanks for the black magic, I sure hope the jinx is gone.

Had the armrest repaired today by an outfit who specialise in this type of repair, it turned out well, hows that for OCD. repaired within a day.

    Cheers Pat.

I saw a 2001 Wintergreen Bean w/ 6500 miles & in near perfect shape (one tiny bumper ding) for sale today in Berkeley - asking $26900. Met the owner - he wants Timberline Green instead (must be nice.....) If anyone's interested I have his #. Bonus - it even still has the Bean badges so that you can remove them yourself!

I'll be reporting your feedback to our E-Business group. We all recognized the "opportunity for improvement". It was our first crack at a topic like this so we have a ways to go. Your feedback is really good and it will be put to good use. It was a learning experience for me too! I'm used to participating. I was watching what was going on and how Kirstie and Bob (Edmunds) were working really hard to stay on top of things.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with things as we grow and learn.

Have a great weekend! I'm off to the beach!

I have a 2002 Forester that has a buzz like rattle in the dash. Has anybody else ha dthis problem? I can't locate where its coming from.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The sludge issue actually had me re-thinking synthetic oil, because those using it were completely unaffected. The high temps and rapid drop in temps do not break down the stuff like dino oil. But I've got 45k miles, so I'll probably just shorten the service intervals.

I do have synthetic in my Miata's tranny, and can vouch for it being a little easier to shift in very cold temps.

Jillian: I can get a new one for $26,367 from Fitz. He may want to consider a lower asking price - maybe $24k or so.

Well I auto-xed the XT6 this weekend running the WRX wheels and RE92s. Other than my PS pump still not working and my ~650miles of MT driving under my belt, it was a fun auto-x. I also drove through some torrential rains as well on Friday night. Interesting watching the outside temp guage go from 80->60 in about 5 minutes. The RE92s were EXCELLENT in the deep water, no hydroplaning or anything. On the street they are decent to good handling. Not as good as my Yokohama AVS Intermediates, but those were summer tires not all-season. On the track the RE92s were worthless, but no more worthless than any other all-season OEM tires.

Interesting it was fun to loose traction with the XT6 for the first time in like 20+ auto-xs since it was the first one I ran w/o R-compounds since I bought them last season. Another interesting thing was that there was so much torque on the XT6 that I was able to spin a tire on each axle coming out of the corners. No LSD on it, but I was even more suprised that my rear inner tire spun more often than my fronts, which might lead me to believe a 30/70 torque split that has been reported by some XT6 MT owners. Someone got shots of me at this link on the I-club. http://i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=176314

Did I walk into a parallel universe? paisan complemented what he usually calls the "blowtenzas"? ;-)

Nice job getting the XT6 into the "dog relieving himself" position.

juice: 45K miles is still relatively young. Are you concerned that going to synthetic now would cause seal leaks? FYI I switched at around 40K and had no problems. How about synthetic blends?

mike: Cool photos! You're one of the few folks who have complimented the RE92s. BTW, who was that mini Rover in the last shot?

    Ken
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Maybe. I mean, I could be creating a problem by addressing a problem that doesn't exist. My last two tanks were better than 25mpg, so it's well lubricated and runs great now. If it ain't broke...

You would have thought the tires were gonna 'blow' ;-)

I picked that up from most of the WRX owners. I've always and to this day will argue they are perfectly suited for the subies as an OEM tire, which needs to be an all-around decent tire. On the track they were horrid, but on the street more than adequet for OEM tires. I rather them have RE92s than have subaru charge more $ (say $300 extra) and throw on some "psuedo" performance tires. Leave the price low, and let ME decide what tires I want to put on if I want to go with performance ones. :)

Auto-x: Dog-lift. Yeah with the WRX tires (5% higher) it doesn't help my body roll much. But I was just out there having fun, finished 11/13 in STS class, 40something/100 in the PAX. But it was all good cause the guy who runs in H-stock with me down in Englishtown goes for points with the region we ran with yesterday so he got to win H-stock where I'd normally run with my Rs and likely would have beat him.

Thanks for Dave and his GF for coming out! :)
